TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO LIVING BEYOND BREAST CANCER WAS FOUNDED TO SUPPORT WOMEN DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER AS THEY NAVIGATED THEIR LIVES BEYOND TREATMENT.

Quickly, LBBC realized women needed support and information from the moment of diagnosis and throughout their lives. LBBC began as an

organization that hosted two annual conferences, one in the spring and one in the fall, to address medical, emotional and practical concerns. Attendance at

conferences grew quickly because women were hungry for information, connection and support.

Fast forward 25 years: The world has changed and so has LBBC. Information travels more quickly in ways we couldn’t have imagined in 1991. LBBC has adapted to the changes and now provides information in many different formats, taking advantage of technology to advance our mission. But we have stayed true to our core mission: to connect people impacted by breast cancer with trusted information and a community of support.

Our two pillars, “trusted information” and “community of support,” are more critical today because it is often hard to tell what information is accurate and relevant for you. LBBC takes away the guess-work. Everything we produce is medically reviewed, and much of it relies on feedback from you, our community of friends and supporters who have been there. We make sure it is easy to find the information that is specific to your stage of disease and subtype. We also have easy ways for young women to find each other to get peer-to-peer support. You’ll learn more about all our resources as you read this annual report.

I have been proud to lead LBBC since 1996 and to guide the organization through the many changes we have experienced over the last two decades. My dedicated staff, a few of whom have been with LBBC for nearly 20 years, and my conscientious and focused board of directors have helped tens of thousands of people and their loved ones move beyond those frightening words, “you have breast cancer.” We’ve given them information to help them understand their disease, and a community that is always ready to provide support.

I wish our work was complete but it is not.

Thank you for your generous support and for your belief in our work. I welcome the opportunity to talk to you. Please reach out to me: [email protected].

In gratitude,

Jean A. Sachs, MSS, MLSP Chief Executive Officer

Reflections

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF SUPPORTING WOMEN impacted by breast cancer is a huge milestone. I’m very proud of the national impact of LBBC. We’ve grown from a small organization founded in Philadelphia to reaching over 500,000 people each year across the country.

I CAN’T TALK ABOUT THE FUTURE without recognizing those who have worked so hard to make LBBC what it is today - a financially strong and well-managed charity. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the outgoing Board Chair, Barbara Yorke, and for Jean, her management team and the rest of the staff.

WHEN I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER, I was lucky to have access to some of the top doctors in the country and lots of support from family, friends and coworkers. I know that not everyone has the same level of support, and even when you do, it helps to talk to people who have walked in your shoes.

MY MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS as board chair all have one thing in common – hearing the personal stories of those who have been touched by LBBC and learning how important and meaningful our work is on an individual level.

Our best to you,

Barbara J. Yorke, Chair, 2014-2016 Laura A. Kowal, Chair, 2017-2018

I LOOK FORWARD TO LBBC’S FUTURE AND THE CHALLENGES AHEAD. I am particularly excited about LBBC’s prospects for bigger and bolder partnerships that will extend our reach and expand our national presence.

LBBC FILLS A UNIQUE SPACE. We provide information that is reliable, accurate and accessible. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to serve and lead this amazing organization. It has been an honor to work with our passionate staff, our dedicated volunteers and my fellow directors.

OUR HISTORYLBBC HAS BEEN A LEADER IN EDUCATING AND SUPPORTING WOMEN AND FAMILIES IMPACTED BY BREAST CANCER FOR MORE THAN 25 YEARS. When our organization was founded in Philadelphia in 1991, we initially provided information, connection and support to individuals once primary treatment ended. As the need for specialized services increased, we expanded to assist all stages of diagnosis, treatment and recovery. We address the needs of those who are newly diagnosed, in treatment, in recovery, living with a history of breast cancer or living with metastatic (stage IV) disease. We meet people where they are with information and programs that are relevant to specific diagnoses and phases of life. We also tailor content to specific and frequently underserved populations, including African-Americans, Latinas, the LGBTQ community, low-income women and women who speak languages other than English.

IN 2016, LBBC CELEBRATED OUR 25TH ANNIVERSARY with new initiatives, unique events and special campaigns. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped us celebrate in style.

25TH ANNIVERSARY CIRCLE For our silver anniversary, we created a new community of donors: the 25th Anniversary Circle. This philanthropic community of individuals have made contributions to recognize LBBC’s 25 years and to fuel the organization’s next phase of growth.

The response to the 25th Anniversary Circle campaign was gratifying. In just a few months, 23 individuals stepped forward and donated $270,000. Each one of them has a unique connection to LBBC and was honored to be part of this group of leaders. However, our work is not over and we continue to seek supporters who will help us reach our goal of doubling what has been raised to date. Go to page 23 of this report to view the list of 25th Anniversary Circle supporters.

WITH YOU, FOR YOU.In 2016, we introduced the new LBBC tagline: With you, for you. This statement speaks directly to the work we do and services we provide. We want our supporters to know that we will be there with them throughout their journey and that the programs we provide are created specifically for them.

AD CAMPAIGNOur 2016 ad campaign included print, radio and television ads featuring those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer sharing their stories and discussing how they benefited from LBBC’s programs and services.

AS PART OF THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION,

97 DIY EVENTS raised over

$107,000 IN SUPPORT OF OUR

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES.

25 DIY EVENTS FOR 25 YEARSAs part of our year-long celebration, we encouraged individuals, groups and businesses to host events to benefit LBBC. Our goal was 25 events in October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but the response was overwhelmingly positive and we far exceeded that goal.

THE PADDLE RALLY, our longest running annual DIY event, marked its 20th year supporting LBBC and raised over $26,600.

Lesley Glenn, part of our Hear My Voice outreach volunteer program, organized the 2nd annual CLIMB FOR THE CURE at Echo Mountain in California and raised over $5,000.

BARRE CODE MILWAUKEE hosted Brawlin’ Against Breast Cancer in Milwaukee, WI, raising $500.

We also challenged our supporters around the country to host 25 REACH & RAISE ON THE ROAD YOGA EVENTS over one weekend in September, and they stepped up, hosting 30 events. Yoga classes were held from Alaska to Santiago, Chile, and many places in between.

Whether mountain climbing or yoga, all these events raise much needed funds to support LBBC, increase awareness of LBBC’s programs and services and create connection in local communities.

LBBC’S DEDICATION TO THE TWIN GOALS OF PROVIDING UP-TO-DATE, EASY TO UNDERSTAND MEDICAL INFORMATION AND CREATING A SUPPORT COMMUNITY of peers facing similar diagnoses and issues is nowhere more evident than in our annual national conferences. In 2016, our spring Conference on Metastatic Breast Cancer and fall Living Beyond Breast Cancer Conference had close to 900 attendees combined. Each conference has programming specially tailored to address the concerns of specific types and stages of the disease, as well as information for particular populations, all presented by experts in their fields. Just as important is the connection our attendees feel to others facing the same treatments and questions. Everyone leaves our conferences feeling better informed, less isolated and ready to take the next step in their cancer care.

“This was my first conference and I was so happy I attended. The speakers were excellent and it was so helpful to meet other women going through this.”

Educational topics covered at the conferences in 2016 include:

•Treating breast cancer that has spread to the brain

•Improving sex and intimacy

•Cooking to improve health, with a demonstration

•Understanding the drug approval process

•Treating and living with triple-negative breast cancer

SHOOTING FOR THE STARS: What the Cancer Moonshot

Means for YouBY ERIC FITZSIMMONS

Continued on page 8

H ope. That word comes up a lot when talking about the

Cancer Moonshot, a major push from the U.S. government

to advance cancer research and treatments. For researchers and

doctors, the Cancer Moonshot is meant to provide new resources

and attention and new ways of sharing information. But what it

comes down to for many people with cancer, like Karen Peterson

of Harlem, New York, is hope — hope that the future of cancer

care will be brighter than the present.

Karen, 51, was watching the State of the Union address in

January when President Barack Obama first announced the

Cancer Moonshot. As a woman who was diagnosed last year

with triple-negative breast cancer, she hopes the new interest

in cancer will mean more research money and new treatments.

Targeted therapies have changed the experience for women with

hormone receptor-positive and HER2-positive breast cancers

in recent decades, but women with a triple-negative diagnosis

remain limited to chemotherapy for full-body treatment.

The Cancer Moonshot means new possibilities. Karen is

excited about some of the recent findings in cancer research

but wants to see the Moonshot bring more resources to those

efforts. “The only way this is going to get cured is to find

a treatment and the only way you can do that is by doing

research,” she says.

Building the Launch Pad

Heading the Cancer Moonshot is Vice President Joe Biden, who

lost his son Beau to brain cancer in 2015. His goal for the Cancer

Moonshot is to move ideas from research into practice more

quickly. Through more access to data for researchers, and to

clinical trials for people with cancer, Mr. Biden says he wants to

achieve in the next 5 years what would have taken 10 at the rate

things were going last year.

There have been exciting developments in cancer research

recently. Breakthroughs in genomics, the study of how genes

in cancer cells are different than genes in healthy cells, and

immunotherapy, which uses the body’s own defenses to fight

cancer, have been especially inspiring.

“With the dramatic growth in our understanding of cancer

development and additional therapies and diagnostic tests

available, there is no better time for this bold commitment,”

American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) CEO Clifford A.

Hudis, MD, says about the Cancer Moonshot.

But new information on cancer cells and treatments is often

slow to come to the public. That prevents progress, Mr. Biden

says. One common problem is that getting a research grant can

be time-consuming and they’re awarded mostly to established

researchers. This can keep young doctors and researchers from

getting the funds to test new ideas.

Help for tHe Helpers: Why Caregivers Need Self-CareBY ROBIN WARSHAW, FOR LBBC

Continued on page 8

“I couldn’t even think about my needs.” That’s how Tamesha Keel describes becoming a caregiver after her mother, Mary Keel, was diagnosed in 2013, at age 65, with metastatic breast cancer. She had moved into Tamesha’s Florida home a year before.

Her mother, who also had moderate Alzheimer’s disease, went to an adult day program while Tamesha worked, but her caregiving duties were still heavy. Tamesha bathed and dressed her mother when she became weak, cooked meals, gave her medicine and did other chores. Feeling overwhelmed, Tamesha talked with family members who had been caregivers. “My aunts said, ‘You must take care of yourself. You can’t be up all night and then go to work.’” Recognizing the wisdom in that advice, Tamesha got help from community volunteers who knew her mother. When she could afford it, she hired nursing assistants. This gave Tamesha time to sleep more, get massages, meditate, pray and talk with a therapist. Those things helped her create what she calls “an

environment of love” for her mother and herself. Mary Keel died from metastatic breast cancer in 2014.Tamesha, 39, now works as a coach and consultant in Arlington, Virginia. Her work includes encouraging caregivers to care for themselves. She likens it to adults on airplanes being told to put on their oxygen masks first before helping children and others. “If something happens to you, where is your loved one then?” she says. “You really need your own oxygen to not only survive, but to thrive.”

Caregivers can be partners or spouses, adult children, parents, friends or neighbors. Caregiving can be both an enriching and difficult experience for the giver and receiver. Some caregivers set aside their own needs to help the other person. They may think it’s selfish to pay attention to their own wellbeing. But ignoring self-care can cause stress or burnout, which may trigger guilt, anger, resentment or depression. Caregiving DifferencesFor any stage of disease, breast cancer caregiving can be stressful. The intensity of needs may rise or fall with treatments, ongoing side effects or other issues. Yet there are differences in caring for someone with early-stage breast cancer or someone with metastatic disease.

Hands-on care for early-stage disease is usually time-limited. When primary treatment ends, most caregiving tasks also end. Caregivers who cut back on work, school or activities often return to their usual schedules while still being supportive of their loved ones. Still, though it may be temporary, the help you give your loved one with early-stage breast cancer is important and needed.Greg Sayles, of Bettendorf, Iowa, cared for his wife Joy, then 63, after her diagnosis of early-stage breast cancer. PEOPLE OFTEN NEED TO FIND BREAST CANCER INFORMATION AND PEER SUPPORT QUICKLY, without waiting for an upcoming LBBC program or brochure to arrive. Through our website and social media pages, we offer support and a way to connect with others 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We host Twitter Chats throughout the year, where participants quickly and easily read and share experiences. We also have three Facebook pages — our organizational page that lists all programs, events and services, as well as the latest breast cancer updates and stories of interest; one for Reach & Raise that offers information about our yoga events; and a closed Facebook group for those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer before age 45, where members can share their feelings privately in an online space.

LBBC.ORGWe know that facing a breast cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming. Our website, LBBC.ORG, is filled with reliable, easy-to-understand information, thoughtfully organized by breast cancer type and stage, it has information for specific populations, that has been reviewed by medical professionals. LBBC.ORG is the gateway to our organization and houses information about upcoming events, recordings of previous programs and our award-winning blog, which allows those affected by breast cancer to share their stories in their own words.

WEBINARSLBBC’s hour-long educational webinars focus on specific topics of interest for individuals impacted by breast cancer. They are a great way to get updated about recent changes and advances in treatment, as well as a way to cover topics of ongoing concern, such as fear of recurrence and exercise and nutrition. Programs are accessible via web stream or telephone. Topics covered in 2016 included treatment for HER2+ breast cancer, breast reconstruction and managing treatment side effects.

BREAST CANCER 360sLBBC’s Breast Cancer 360s are innovative hour-long gatherings featuring a panel of health care experts and individuals affected by breast cancer. They are designed to look at a topic from every angle. Experts break down complicated legal, medical and psychological topics into an easy-to-understand format, while those who have faced these issues can share their personal experiences. Members of the in-person audience, as well as the national online audience, text their questions. In 2016, LBBC hosted four Breast Cancer 360s on triple-negative breast cancer, young women and body image, integrative cancer care and understanding your rights in the workplace.

COMMUNITY CONNECTORSCommunity Connector volunteers are a core asset in leading and sharing LBBC’s mission in communities across the coun-try. These volunteers serve as LBBC ambassadors, raising awareness about the organization and connecting individ-uals and local communities to us. Each volunteer acts as a liaison between their community and our national office.

“As a Community Connector, I feel confident, prepared and ready to serve as an LBBC brand ambassador.”

HEAR MY VOICEHear My Voice volunteers, who are all living with stage IV breast cancer, make a difference in their physical and digital communities by connecting with others with metastatic dis-ease, as well as educating the general public about metastat-ic breast cancer. Volunteers focus on the different ways they can act to increase public understanding of the disease and public support to fund for research and supportive programs, while creating a strong social network of those impacted by metastatic breast cancer.

“Hear My Voice gave me a voice when I really didn’t think I had one anymore. I thought my life was over and through LBBC and Hear My Voice, I have realized it’s far from over.”

YOUNG ADVOCATESLBBC’s Young Advocate Program trains young women diagnosed before the age of 45 to use their personal breast cancer experiences to make a difference by raising aware-ness, furthering their own understanding of the disease and advocating for others.

“The best thing about the program was getting equipped with the knowledge on how to become larger than cancer and bring about change in little waves to create a larger impact.”

BREAST CANCER HELPLINELBBC’s Breast Cancer Helpline connects people to trained volunteers who have been diagnosed with breast cancer for emotional support, guidance and hope. Users are matched with a trained volunteer with a similar experience, whether by diagnosis type, age or concern.

From a caller: “It was wonderful! I finished the call feeling well supported and more in control of my decision-making. It was a tremendous help at a time when I was feeling very down and anxious.”

LBBC KNOWS THAT SUPPORT IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS INFORMATION TO THOSE FACING A BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSIS. Since our founding, we have worked to have high-touch support available for those who need it. While our national conferences provide a great opportunity for close connection twice a year, we know that people want to connect year-round. Our peer support programs connect people with similar situations and help create community; empower people to reach out to others in their local communities with information and support; and raise general awareness about the issues facing those with breast cancer and how LBBC can help.

Peer SUPPORT PROGRAMS

“I was able to start a support group, reach out to my community and provide many women with resources they did not have or know how to get. If I can help just one person have a better quality of life, then I have absolutely improved mine.”

Celebrating its 10th year in 2016, LBBC has more than 60

trained volunteers.

Advancement

LIVING BEYOND BREAST CANCER’S REACH & RAISE In 2016 we unveiled a new name for our annual yoga fundraising event. Living Beyond Breast Cancer’s Reach & Raise is about more than yoga. It is about reaching goals and reaching out in every way - to friends and family, to the community and to those impacted by breast cancer. But it’s also about raising – awareness of LBBC and of the vital funds that allow our organization to continue providing programs to those diagnosed with breast cancer and their loved ones.

We held our 15th annual yoga event on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, on an unusually cold morning in May. Jennifer Schelter, co-founder of Reach & Raise, led the group through an inspirational practice. Einstein Health Systems joined us as our first presenting sponsor.

In total, there were 2,250 yoga participants, who collectively raised over $382,000. LBBC’s Reach & Raise: Denver garnered close to 200 participants and was a great opportunity for our local leadership volunteers to get involved with the community.

“I look forward to the event every year. It is great to do

yoga, meet new people, and contribute to a cause that

helps many individuals.”

White House Black Market has been LBBC’s most dedicated and generous partner for more than a decade. Their support, as well as that of their sister companies Soma and Chico’s, helps make everything we do possible. They support LBBC through their Give Hope Collection, which included a t-shirt, a scarf and a tray in 2016, customer round-up at the register, and support through their Foundation line. And they did so much more: sponsoring our 25th annual Butterfly Ball and Reach & Raise: Philadelphia; featuring our Butterfly Ball Going Beyond Honorees in a beautiful spread in their fall catalog; and hosting shopping nights in stores around the country. We thank White House Black Market for their remarkable support.

Through Eagles Care, we were named a nonprofit partner with the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2016/2017 football season. The Eagles provided financial support, executives shared their expertise on a range of topics, created a video profile of LBBC board member Ayanna Kalasunas* and hosted LBBC supporters and constituents at their stadium for events and activities. The Eagles were named one of the 2017 Faces of Philanthropy by the Philadelphia Business Journal for their partnership with LBBC.

Southwest Airlines selected LBBC to recognize a longtime Southwest employee, Teresa Laraba, who passed away in 2016. Together, we created the Teresa Laraba Travel Grant Fund supported by Southwest employees. In addition, Southwest Airlines will provide 31 complimentary airline tickets annually for the next 5 years to enable those impacted by breast cancer, who could not otherwise afford to attend, to travel to LBBC’s annual conferences.

For more than a decade, CalExotics, one of the largest sexual health product manufacturers in the world, has supported Living Beyond Breast Cancer. In 2016, CalExotics launched a new collection called Inspire, designed especially for women who have been treated for breast cancer. All products in this line benefit our work.

jane iredale increased their support by more than 50% in 2016 through sales of their new Lemongrass Love Hydration Spray. In addition, they provided specialized makeovers to women affected by breast cancer at our annual fall conference.

In 2016, LBBC welcomed a new supporter, San Antonio Shoemakers (SAS), to the Shop to Support family. They donated proceeds from two styles of footwear and helped generate exposure for LBBC through online and print advertising.

PARTNERS AND SPONSORSLBBC’S CORPORATE PARTNERS AND SPONSORS DEMONSTRATED THEIR SUPPORT DURING OUR 25TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR. Among the programs that our pharmaceutical partners helped make a reality were Hear My Voice, the translation of our brochure Metastatic Breast Cancer: Guide for the Newly Diagnosed into five languages and both of our annual conferences.

SHOP TO SUPPORT IN 2016, MORE THAN 35 COMPANIES SUPPORTED LIVING BEYOND BREAST CANCER through our Shop to Support initiative. Companies can donate a portion of the proceeds from special products back to LBBC during the month of October and beyond. Here are just a few of those companies.
