Dear Friends,

In 2012, the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley saw an increase in the amount of food distributed in six counties, the number of member agencies served, and the number of individuals assisted in its service area. Facing the challenges of disaster relief for a second year in a row with the onset of Superstorm Sandy, the Food Bank was aided financially by many caring people and organizations. TD Bank alone donated $25,000 to help those affected by the storm. The Food Bank worked in partnership with agencies in Rockland, Orange and Ulster counties to ensure that food, cleaning supplies, and other essential items were available for disaster relief efforts.

Economic conditions for many of our neighbors were still very difficult in 2012, and the Food Bank provided resources to help those who remained jobless, felt the stress of a shrinking paycheck, or were homeless. Despite the tough economic times, the level of support for the Food Bank increased. Many of our neighbors made donations, volunteered their time, or committed other acts of generosity to assist those who needed help.

We appreciate the willingness of so many individuals, businesses, and non-profit organizations to work with the Food Bank to create a caring environment in the Hudson Valley. We will continue to strive to make our community a better place to live for all, with assistance from a wonderful, philanthropic base of support. Thank you for your efforts to be a part of the Food Bank’s mission.

Sincerely,

Jan WhitmanDirectorFood Bank of the Hudson Valley

Dear Friends,

When the economy struggles as it has for the past five years, the Regional Food Bank is asked to do more to feed our hungry neighbors. Fortunately, with the help of many generous people we were able to provide more assistance than ever in 2012. We distributed over 27.7 million pounds of food (enough for 23 million meals) to our member agencies, an 8% increase over 2011 and 55% more than we provided just five years ago.

It took many people helping in many different ways to make that happen. I want to thank our dedicated and hardworking staff, deeply committed Board of Directors, food donors, financial supporters, volunteers, and everyone else who used their talents and resources to assist us with our work. I also thank and commend our member agencies - the food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and other programs that every day provide sustenance to those who turn to them for help. They have our utmost respect.

It is an honor for us at the Regional Food Bank to partner with so many caring people in the fight against hunger. We will always strive to live up to the faith and trust that has been placed in us.

Sincerely,

Mark QuandtExecutive Director

poundage and programs

Over 250 food industry businesses donated food and non-food grocery items, and hundreds of individuals generously contributed through food drives and other efforts to make it possible for the Food Bank to serve its member agencies. Donations are received from food companies throughout our 23-county service area and from national companies through our relationship with Feeding America, the national network of food banks. The Regional Food Bank accepts products that are surplus, off-size or color, discontinued, close-to-code/best-used by date, shipped in error…unmarketable for whatever reason, but still good to use. For donations that come in bulk or are cosmetically damaged, volunteers and staff work to make these donations usable for our member agencies by sorting and repacking them.

The Food Bank completed its seventh year of operating the Patroon Land Farm in 2012. To date, over 620,000 pounds of produce have been grown and distributed through the Food Bank to people in need. Our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program grew to 382 members last year, providing the Farm with more financial stability and an opportunity to expand its acreage to grow more vegetables to feed the hungry.

The Regional Food bank provided 27.7 million pounds of food to its member agencies and the hungry people they serve in 2012, a 55% increase since 2007. Approximately 250,000 people benefited from the assistance the Food Bank provided.

The need has increased dramatically during these difficult economic times, and the Food Bank has been asked to do much more. Fortunately, our generous community has responded in a big way. Food and monetary donations were strong in 2012, and more people than ever donated their time and services to assist us with sorting and repacking food in the warehouse, volunteering at the Farm or in the office, and serving on fundraising committees. We could not have met the increased need without the tremendous help we received from the community.

backpack programThe BackPack Program helps alleviate child hunger by providing at-risk children with nutritious and easy-to-prepare food on weekends, when other resources may not available. The Food Bank provides backpacks filled with child-friendly and easy-to-prepare food each Friday during the school year. In 2012, the program expanded from 20 to 32 schools and served 820 children each week.

summer food service programAs a sponsor of this federal program, the Food Bank partners with community agencies to provide nutritious breakfasts and lunches to low-income school-aged children throughout the summer, when school breakfasts and lunches are not available. The Food Bank sponsors sites in Albany, Montgomery, and Fulton Counties. (SFSP is an equal opportunity provider and employer.) In 2012, the Food Bank provided 16,843 meals, an increase of 3,103 meals from 2011.

patroon land farmThe Regional Food Bank, in partnership with the Patroon Land Foundation, manages a 15-acre Farm for the purpose of growing vegetables for distribution to the Food Bank’s member agencies and the hungry people they serve. In 2012, 147,204 pounds of produce were harvested. Since the Food Bank took over operations of the Farm in 2006, it has produced more than 621,000 pounds of fresh food for those in need.

mass distribution programThe Food Bank’s Mass Distributions – also called Mobile Pantries – supply people in low-income neighborhoods with surplus food on a monthly basis. Mass Distributions give people food over and above what they may receive at a food pantry, helping them stretch their limited dollars and giving their nutrition a boost through the provision of food like yogurt, juice, and fresh produce. A total of 3,922,485 pounds were distributed at Mass Distribution sites in 2012.

kids cafe Kids Cafes are soup kitchens for children. In addition to providing healthy meals in a safe atmosphere, Kids Cafes provide athletic activities, homework assistance, and nutrition education to disadvantaged youth. The Food Bank currently operates a Kids Cafe at the Schenectady Boys & Girls Club’s Mont Pleasant site where 50 children receive hot meals three times a week.

workshopsThe Food Bank provides agencies a wide variety of workshops on a monthly basis, such as:

• Advocacy • Grant Writing• Accommodating Special Diets • Menu Planning• Agency Best Practices • Outreach Opportunities• Cooking Without a Kitchen • Overcoming Burnout• Disaster Preparedness • Pantry Tours• Food Bank Orientation • Understanding Federal Nutrition Programs• Food Safety • What’s in a Bag?• Fundraising 101 • And More!

one-on-one supportOur Agency Relations staff works hard to address the changing needs of our member agencies and offer them the support they need. Food Bank staff members analyze agency ordering patterns to ensure agencies optimize their use of the Food Bank. In addition, they educate member agency staff so they can provide resources beyond emergency food, such as information on Food Stamps (now called SNAP), affordable health care, and nutrition.

Volunteers play a vital role in the Food Bank’s work and allow us to accomplish more than we ever could on our own. We appreciate the gifts each person brings and recognize those individuals and groups that come back time and time again. We are stronger for their many contributions.

thank you

how you can help

The staff of the Regional Food Bank and Food Bank of the Hudson Valley would like to extend a special thank you to all who helped us in 2012 with food donations, fundraising, volunteer efforts, and in a multitude of other ways. We are grateful for the time, energy, and resources our generous community provided in 2012 to ensure we were able to help as many people as possible during a time when it was so desperately needed.

Volunteers are vital to the Food Bank’s operation and contribute in countless ways. Sorting food, picking produce at our farm, or raising money at a fundraising event—there are endless varieties of enjoyable, rewarding tasks that volunteers perform every day.

donate time and talent

Financial donations sustain the Food Bank and enrich the larger community by providing nourishment, dignity, and a sense of sharing to all involved. Funds come from grants, special events, and contributions, and each donation makes a meaningful difference. In-Kind donations come in many forms, from printing to paving and more. These donations allow the Food Bank to get more food to hungry people.

make a monetary or in-kind donation

donate foodFood donations are at the core of the Food Bank’s work. Food companies donate their edible but unsaleable food, and individuals and organizations conduct food drives at all times of the year. Non-food items like paper goods and cleaning supplies are also donated. These products are provided to food pantries, soup kitchens, and other agencies serving people in need.

Did you have a great time volunteering in our warehouse or on the Farm? Spread the word! Let your friends know, and encourage them to volunteer! Find us on Facebook to keep up with what’s going on at the Food Bank, and share our page with your friends. With your help, we are alleviating hunger...together.
