Dear Friends,

In 2010, we celebrated the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley’s 20th Anniversary as a branch of Regional Food Bank of NENY. The assistance of thousands of people, from volunteers to board members, has made two decades of success possible. Our neighbors in the Hudson Valley have reached out to those most in need during diffi cult economic times to ensure that no one need go hungry.

Of the Food Bank’s many supporters, some long-time volunteers and donors have been outstanding in their service and deserve a special mention: Barbara Ostrander of Vanacore, DeBenedictus, DiGovanni, and Weddell has served as the chair of the Food Bank’s advisory board for many years. Paul Tesoro of Central Hudson participates on the advisory board and Regional Food Bank’s Board of Directors. Barbara Gross has been an offi ce volunteer for more than ten years. The DiBrizzi family has been generous since the Food Bank’s beginnings. John Rath of TD Bank has been the friend who connects us to new friends! The Choudhry family has been a shining example of community service and gave us the warehouse we have today. NYS Senator Bill Larkin and Assemblywoman Nancy Calhoun have stood out among the many legislators who support the Food Bank each year. The Dyson Foundation, early on, had the confi dence to invest in the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley in such a meaningful fashion that we were able to create our current home.

I wish there was space to adequately thank each of the individuals, companies, non-profi t organizations, food donors, foundations, fi nancial donors, and groups who have added to the history and legacy of the Food Bank. I appreciate the eff orts of our hard-working staff , our colleagues and co-workers at Regional Food Bank, and our extended family from the community. It has been twenty years of growth, challenges, and successes. And none of it would have been possible without all of the aforementioned people coming together for the greater good.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Jan WhitmanDirectorFood Bank of the Hudson Valley

Dear Friends,

Every day, I witness our staff , volunteers, and supporters contribute in so many ways to make sure the Regional Food Bank meets the needs of our hungry neighbors. It is interesting to see the diff erent types of expertise and contributions it takes to get the job done. It is also very rewarding to see everything come together to result in a very critical service for people in need, especially in these diffi cult times.

Never was the level of commitment, contribution, and service at the Food Bank greater than it was in 2010. Every part of the Food Bank grew in response to the increasing need. We served more agencies, provided a greater variety of services, utilized more volunteers, received more food donations from more donors, benefi ted from more fundraisers and food drives, and provided more food than ever to our member agencies and the people they serve. In fact, we distributed 24.9 million pounds of food in 2010, the most by far in our history, and enough food for 19 million meals.

The beauty of our work is twofold - knowing it makes a real diff erence in people’s lives, and witnessing the generosity of so many people who make it possible. We are grateful to all our friends, new and old, who choose to express their love and concern for the poor and hungry through their support of the Regional Food Bank. It is a blessing to be part of such an endeavor.

Sincerely,

Mark QuandtExecutive Director

regional food bank snapshotThe Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York is a private, not-for-profi t organization that has been helping to feed the poor and hungry in our communities since 1982. The Food Bank works in partnership with all segments of the food industry–manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers, growers, and brokers–who donate food that may be mislabeled, overproduced, short weighted, or close to expiration. The food is stored at the Food Bank’s 62,000 square-foot warehouse in Latham and distributed to food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, and other charitable agencies in 23 counties.

The Regional Food Bank opened a 55,000 square-foot branch facility called Food Bank of the Hudson Valley in 1990 to meet the growing need in the lower Hudson Valley area. It is located in Cornwall-on-Hudson in Orange County. The combined service area of the Regional Food Bank and Food Bank of the Hudson Valley encompasses 41% of the landmass of New York State.

The mission of the Regional Food Bank is to alleviate hunger and prevent food waste. We work toward this mission by ensuring that all products available for donation reach the Food Bank and are distributed judiciously to our member agencies; by practicing responsible stewardship; and by actively participating in the community to increase awareness of hunger and poverty.

poundage and prog ams

Over 250 food industry businesses donated food and non-food grocery items, and hundreds of individuals generously contributed through food drives and other eff orts to make it possible for the Food Bank to serve its member agencies. Donations are received from food companies throughout our 23-county service area and from national companies through our relationship with Feeding America, the national network of food banks. The Regional Food Bank accepts products that are surplus, off -size or color, discontinued, close-to-code/best-used by date, shipped in error…unmarketable for whatever reason, but still good to use. For donations that come in bulk or are cosmetically damaged, volunteers and staff work to make these donations usable for our member agencies by sorting and repacking.

The Food Bank completed its fi fth year of operating the Patroon Land Farm in 2010, To date, over 377, 000 pounds of produce have been grown and distributed through the Food Bank to people in need. Our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program expanded to 219 members, providing the Farm more fi nancial stability and an opportunity to expand its acreage to grow more vegetables to feed the hungry.

The Regional Food bank provided 24.9 million pounds of food to its member agencies and the hungry people they serve in 2010, an 11% increase over 2009. Approximately 250,000 people benefi tted from the assistance the Food Bank provided.

The need has increased dramatically during these diffi cult economic times, and the Food Bank has been asked to do much more. Fortunately, our generous community has responded in a big way. Food and monetary donations were strong in 2010, and more people than ever donated their time and services to assist us with sorting and repacking food in the warehouse, volunteering at the Farm or in the offi ce, and serving on fundraising committees. We could not have met the increased need without the tremendous help we received from the community.

thank you

The Gift of TIME

“It means a great deal to me to rescue

food so that needy folks can be fed.”

Ted Thompson, Volunteer

Volunteers are vital to the Food Bank’s operation and contribute in countless ways. Sorting food, picking produce at our farm, or raising money at a fund raising event—there are endless varieties of enjoyable, rewarding tasks that volunteers perform every day.

The Gift of TALENT

“The Food Bank should not spend its money

on pavement; it should put its money into food.”

Emil Galasso, In-Kind Donor of Paving Services

This sentiment refl ects the feelings of many donors of in-kind supplies and services. Their gifts allow the Food Bank to get more food to more hungry people.

The Gift of TREASURE

“Anything my family can do to respond to the needs of the

hungry is consistent with our social and spiritual world view.

Helping the Regional Food Bank in particular provides an extra

sense of satisfaction because it is an effi cient organization that

can signifi cantly leverage the resources its supporters provide.”

Don Csaposs, Financial Donor

“I fi nd it a humbling experience to play a small part in such a large community

eff ort to eliminate hunger.”

David Sullivan, Champlain Valley Apple Storage

The food industry is the backbone of food banking. Its support is critical to the Food Bank’s work.

Financial donations sustain the Food Bank and enrich the larger community by providing nourishment, dignity, and a sense of sharing to all involved. Funds come from grants, special events, and contributions, and each donation makes a meaningful diff erence.

how you can help

The staff of the Regional Food Bank and Food Bank of the Hudson Valley would like to extend a special thank you to all who helped us in 2010 with food donations, fundraising, volunteer eff orts, and in a multitude of other ways. We are grateful for the time, energy, and resources our generous community provided in 2010 to ensure we were able to expand our services and help as many people as possible during a time when it was so desperately needed.

Volunteers play a vital role in the Food Bank’s work and allow us to accomplish more than we ever could on our own. We appreciate the gifts each person brings and recognize those individuals and groups that come back time and time again. We are stronger for their many contributions.
