overwhelming success, Zoo Brew will return in 2011!

The Zoo’s incredible management team demonstrated once

again that it was prepared to address the economic challenges

facing our region. With attendance below projections, area

managers planned and implemented strategies that kept the Zoo

operating in the black throughout 2010. In fact, the Zoo has been

contributing to Santa Barbara’s economic recovery over the past

three years by creating new staff positions.

While there were no major capital projects under construction or

being completed in 2010, all major development and planning

efforts focused on the Discovery Pavilion. This $7.5 million, 9,500

square foot project has been in the making for over 25 years. With

many changes since the idea for an education building was first

conceived, the Discovery Pavilion funding and planning is well on

its way toward a construction start as early as the end of 2011.

Thanks to the efforts and hard work of a dedicated staff, the

commitment of so many volunteers, and the generosity of our

Zoo friends, 2010 was another year of achievements and progress

for the Zoo. We are sincerely grateful to all of our visitors,

members, and donors who make the operation and progress of

the Zoo possible!

W hat a year! The weather could not dampen the

spirits of staff, volunteers, and Zoo friends as we

welcomed many new animals to our popula-

tion of “wild residents!” In January, Condor

Country welcomed its fifth California condor, female #327. She

was recovered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service from the wild

population in the Grand Canyon because she had decided that

associating with people was a good feeding strategy; however,

it’s not a good long-term strategy for condor survival.

On March 2, the Zoo celebrated the return of capybaras. It

had been a number of years since capybaras, the world’s

largest rodent, had been part of the collection. The four young

capybaras are part of a litter born in October 2009 and were

brought to the Santa Barbara Zoo in late January.

The Zoo’s giraffe herd expanded in March with the arrival of two

young female Masai giraffes. The pair arrived at the Zoo in March

and the newcomers were introduced to a crowd of enthusiastic

Zoo-goers on April 15. “Betty Lou” was born at the San Diego

Zoo on August 2, 2007 and “Audrey” was born at the Los Angeles

Zoo on February 6, 2008.

On May 15, the Zoo’s pair of golden lion tamarins (an endangered

squirrel-sized primate from the rainforests of coastal Brazil)

welcomed the birth of a new baby. Initially, the new baby

“Wilson” traveled exclusively on his mother’s back, but both

parents actively cared for the youngster. At about six weeks

he began his own exploration of the exhibit. The tamarins are

part of an international conservation program that is restoring

populations of these small monkeys to their native habitat.

The Zoo’s baby population jumped on August 20 with the birth

of five Asian small-clawed otter pups to “Bob” and “Jillian.” It was

the first otter birth at the Zoo in 20 years, and with much media

fanfare, the pups went on exhibit on November 8.

While the Zoo’s special events such as Boo at the Zoo and Zoofari

Ball continued to draw visitors and friends to the Zoo, the ever-

creative Marketing Department launched a new event: Zoo Brew!

In 2010, Santa Barbara Zoo staff participated in a variety of local

conservation efforts through staff Conservation Days. At Coal

Oil Point, interdepartmental employee teams assisted with

restoration of degraded habitat to better support this coastal

ecosystem. In the Sespe Condor Sanctuary, Zoo staff cleaned

up large quantities of microtrash (small bits of trash, e.g. cigarette

butts, bottle caps) to help provide a safer environment for California

condors to raise their young in the wild.

Much was learned about wild condor reproduction and

parenting in the fourth year of the collaborative California Condor

Nest Guarding Program with the United States Fish & Wildlife

Service (USFWS). Over 10,000 hours of quantitative behavioral

observations have been collected to date! This is unprecedented

for this species and these much-needed data will help inform

and shape recovery efforts for years to come. Nest guarding had

a very positive impact on the condor chick population: between

2001-2006, two chicks fledged (left the nest), while 11 chicks

fledged between 2007-2010.

It was a great year for Channel Island fox conservation. Three

of the four federally listed subspecies of Channel Island foxes

are now showing a steady increase in population growth! Thus,

conservation efforts are now largely focused on continued

population monitoring to gauge recovery and track survival and

mortality sources. In this vein, Animal Care and Conservation

Education Staff spent many days on nearby San Miguel and Santa

Rosa islands, helping to monitor wild populations.

Herpetological staff assisted U.S. Forest Service biologists with

monitoring populations of California red-legged frogs, arroyo

toads, western pond turtles, and other species in high-use areas

of the nearby Los Padres National Forest.

The Zoo supports several international conservation efforts that

directly relate to the animals in the Zoo’s care. Projects are being

undertaken with the International Elephant Foundation, which

facilitates a variety of conservation, research, and education

projects in Africa and Asia, and the International Snow Leopard

Trust, which supports community-based conservation of snow

leopards in their native range.

The Zoo has been involved in island fox conservation since

1999, and California condor recovery since 2000. Currently,

Zoo staff spends time working in the field: on the islands, providing

emergency on-call veterinary assistance and general captive

fox caretaking, and in the Sespe condor sanctuary nest guarding

Animals typically come to mind when first thinking

about a zoo. However, it takes a dedicated team of

knowledgeable people, providing excellent animal

care, to make a zoo great. During 2010, members

of the Santa Barbara Zoo animal care team attended seven

conferences to further their knowledge and professionalism.

This involved travel to six states, and covered a wide range of

topics, from the first-ever Giraffe Care Workshop and Principles

in Elephant Management to Training & Enrichment for Zoo

Animals and Population Management. Additionally, Michele

Green, Curator of Mammals, won a scholarship to attend the

Gorilla Workshop at the Oklahoma City Zoo. The information

gained during these conferences inspired the team to improve

the lives of the animals cared for at the Zoo.

The year began with several new arrivals.

Two young female Masai giraffes arrived in March, a new subspe-

cies of giraffe for the Zoo. The plan is to breed in cooperation

with other west coast zoos, including Los Angeles and San Diego,

in the future. The male recommended for this herd did not get

his passport in time to arrive from Canada during 2010, but 2011

looks like his year of travel and adventure. Sulima, the remaining

Baringo giraffe, is nearing 20 years old, but seems to be enjoy

showing the “new girls” the ropes.

Two patas monkeys, a new species of primate for the Zoo, also

joined the collection in March. The original plan to introduce them

to the gorilla exhibit did not materialize, so they are entertaining

guests on exhibit between the snow and Amur leopards.

A new female condor, “327”, joined the four adolescents already

roosting in Condor Country, adding some color to the exhibit.

At 6 years old, she is truly gaining her adult coloration, while the

original four birds are just beginning to “blush.”

animal care & health

While the giraffe travelled via truck, the patas via plane,

and the condor by car, other “arrivals” required far less fuel.

There were several significant births this year.

May brought the first viable golden lion tamarin birth in the history

of the Zoo. The Species Survival Plan recommendation was that the

single offspring live in Santa Barbara with his parents long enough

to witness the birth and rearing of their next offspring. He should

learn everything he needs to know to successfully breed and rear

young of his own in the future, thus contributing to the population

of this critically endangered primate.

In August, the Zoo’s new breeding pair of Asian small-clawed

otters gave birth to five pups. As young, first-time parents, they

did an outstanding job of raising the pups on their own. These

were the first otter pups to be born at the Zoo in over two

decades. The pups, along with four growing capybaras and a

renovated Chinese alligator viewing window, have given new life

to the entrance area of the Zoo.

In addition to the Zoo’s ongoing preventive health care program,

some more extensive veterinary procedures were performed

during the year. Chadwick, the male African lion, developed severe

cataracts which were successfully surgically removed. His eyes are

now clear and his eyesight much improved. Little Mac, one of the

two Asian elephant females, was trained to stand calmly in the ERD

(elephant restraint device) while the vet examined, biopsied, and

finally excised one of several small lumps on her skin. The training

required to accomplish this is just one example of the incredibly

effective and frequent animal training routines that animal care

staff now provide throughout the animal collection.

Another great example of the improved animal training program

is the new lion training wall, completed mid-year. The wall offers a

way for animal care staff to train while the lions are still on exhibit,

increasing the frequency of training which previously only occurred

inside the holding area, off exhibit. Plus, guests can watch the lions

engage in these sessions, which can provide a powerful way for

guests to connect with the animals. Animal care staff trains the

animals to perform behaviors which help improve their care, and

to stimulate the animals mentally. Psychological and physiological

stimulation are also encouraged on a daily basis through behavioral

enrichment in the form of scents, puzzles, novel items, moving

exhibit “furniture,” etc. Animal care staff is now providing the most

frequent, effective, and creative enrichment in the history of the

Zoo, and plans to continue excelling in 2011.

W ith new and expanded program offerings, increased

participation, and continued staff growth, 2010 was

another successful year of conservation education

and volunteer programs at the Santa Barbara Zoo.

Conservation education Programming

In 2010, the Zoo Snooze program experienced tremendous

growth. Zoo Snoozes have long been popular with Girl Scout

troops, but in 2010 a variety of groups participated in this

program, including Cub Scouts and classroom groups. The

overnight curriculum was also expanded to include more behind-

the-scenes tours, dinner options, and more souvenir options.

For the first time, the Santa Barbara Zoo offered the highly

popular overnight program to families and small groups. All

three of these family events filled to capacity and were very well

received by the participants.

Once again, the Zoo Camp program won “Best Summer Camp

in Santa Barbara” in the Independent’s “Best of Santa Barbara”

poll. Most campers came from Santa Barbara County, although

significant enrollment from Ventura County continues as well.

Fifty underprivileged children were able to attend Summer Zoo

Camp by way of Police Activity League (PAL) scholarships paid for

by grants from various local organizations.

In 2010, Spring Zoo Camp set attendance records with up to 77

campers in a single day. Despite torrential rain during camp,

Winter Zoo Camp participants turned up in droves and splish-

splashed their way around the Zoo.

Finally, despite the continued economic climate and financial

crisis in the educational system, the Santa Barbara Zoo hosted

more than 26,151 school children in 2010, an 18% increase from

conser vation education continues to evolve

volunteer Programs

In 2010, two new volunteer coordinators joined the Santa Barbara

Zoo team. Megan Richards joined the team in March from the

Los Angeles Zoo and was soon joined by Jessica Kam, a long-time

Santa Barbara Zoo volunteer and employee. The addition of

these two key staff brought the department’s focus to recreating

the recruitment, training, and placement plan – all while

managing the over 1,000 active volunteers throughout the year.

This year, volunteers contributed a little over 22,436 service hours

to the Zoo, an equivalent of nearly 11 full-time staff at an estimated

value of over $500,000. Without these important contributions,

many of the Zoo’s events and programs would simply not be

possible. In 2010, successful special events such as Dignatarios, Boo

at the Zoo, and Princess Day were mainly staffed by volunteers. The

Zoo also doubled the number of annual Zoo-to-Do community

volunteer events, which bring in members of the community for a

day of volunteering at the Zoo. Additionally, regular teen and adult

volunteers returned week after week to help with a wide range of

tasks including clerical work, grounds beautification, education and

interpretation, and animal care.

In 2010, the Zoo’s long-time partnership with Alpha Resource

Center was strengthened by adding an additional day of

volunteering for people with developmental disabilities. In

appreciation of this successful partnership, the Santa Barbara

Zoo was awarded the first-ever “Imagine a World” award. Word

of this successful volunteer program has spread; in 2010, Genesis

Developmental Services joined the program, bringing in a new

group of people with disabilities to help out the Zoo each week.

To be accredited, the Zoo underwent a thorough investigation to ensure it has met, and will continue to meet, ever-rising standards for animal care, veterinary programs, conservation, education, and safety. Sledding at the Zoo/Snow Leopard Festival is a winter wonderland with a tropical twist; more than 75 tons of snow dumped on the grassy hilltop create sledding runs and a play area. The snow leopards and other animals get snowy treats to play with, too.
