Preface

We now look back on two successful and eventful years that included the first completed post-doctoral qualification (“Habilitation”), the first successful conferral of a doctorate, and the first “professorship procreation.” Furthermore, we experienced a generation shift with our academic associates – who brought new ideas and modified our professorship profile.

With regard to new topics introduced (e.g., productivity and innovation capacity), we were able to extend and modify our activities not only in the teachings of entrepreneurship but also in career development. In addition, we successfully established business ethics as a degree course in our business and management studies.

We continuously examine new trends that we integrate into our research and teachings. Of increasing benefit is the change in demographics, with its implication of a growing demand for qualified personnel, human resources development, knowledge management, and management of diversity in heterogeneous project teams of different age groups. Another area that remains a challenge is economic and social sustainability. What we are dealing with is innovation and technological analyses and assessment in the context of the institutional and ethical aspects of biotechnology.

Herewith we would like to wish you a joyful reading of our second annual report. Along with all our cooperation partners, we are looking forward to a successful 2011.

Business Administration III

This seminar addresses the classic fundamentals of business management, institutional research, and human resources management. A number of technical terms and various forms and structures of organization and leadership approaches are introduced, along with an illustration of motivational instruments. The goal is to raise student awareness with regard to certain problems of organizational makeup and challenges associated with the leadership of staff members. Since 2008, e-learning has become more common, and the winter term of 2010/2011 marks our first-time application of a video-recorded lecture, with the students assisted by special software with online learning programs.

Labor Economics

The labor economics training session, in line with the business administration serious of lectures, focuses on a deeper understanding of the foundations of new institutional economics. We discuss the issues surrounding human resources, recruitment, advanced training, and assessment of associates.

Organizational Economics

The students receive hands-on experience of organizational problems with the help of decision and game theory. They also learn how to apply theory to evaluate institutional economics and how to work out possible solutions for the composition of organizational structures.

Business Management

This seminar covers various management models and management styles, competition strategies, and methods of early detection as well as cooperation and innovation management. The students work independently on projects associated with lecture content. In 2010, for example, ideas for local establishments and businesses were developed and presented at a workshop. The project was supported by the Vattenfall Europe Mining & Generation, Employment Agency, Cottbus National Theater, Citizens' Service Center Cottbus, the Wendish Museum, and the City Museum of Cottbus.

Management and Business Ethics 1 and 2

Business ethics has become an important aspect of the operational code of practice. In this training session, we address the fundamental terminology and the starting points of effective business development, and we discuss the barriers and the stumbling blocks of ethical responsibility. During the winter term of 2010/2011, a series of lectures has been offered on the topic of “Ethics and Capital” (see below).

Seminar on Different Topics

In this seminar, the students acquire the ability to construct academic inquiries within a specific time frame. At the same time, we stipulate topics associated with current scholarly research of the professorship. Upon completion of this seminar, the students have learned to logically process a scientific topic and to set the subject core areas within a field of research. They also learn to present and defend the results of their research in front of an audience.

Career Management (interdisciplinary course of studies offered since the summer term of 2010)

The students study the interdisciplinary and psychological concepts of career building. In this seminar, we examine “career” and professional path as challenges for one's own code of conduct (e.g., career choice and self-management) and also as challenges within institutions (e.g., acceptance and peer assessment). The students gain an interdisciplinary perspective in which psychological factors along with social and economical features are jointly examined.

Series of Lectures on “Ethics and Capital” (offered in the winter term of 2010/2011)

These training sessions provide a platform for critical discussion of the extent of the relationship between economically efficient action and the socially accepted concepts of morality. The lectures encourage students to reflect on the existing objectives of business administration with regard to profit maximization. The aim is to support the personal development of the students with a view to the peculiarity of their own moral concepts regarding proper professional conduct and conduct in leadership positions. The training sessions have been carried out in cooperation with Professor Hans Friesen. Renowned representatives of science and economics have also contributed to these training sessions.

Colloquium for Bachelor, Diploma and Master’s Thesis / Doctoral Candidates / Post-Doctoral Candidates

This colloquium prepares degree holders for the scientific bachelor, diploma, and master thesis. Methods of scientific research are taught and applied using the students’ own papers, and the scope for improvements is discussed in the group. This colloquium has been mandatory for students since summer term 2010.

The development of start-up companies and team-competence workshops for multi-subject study teams

With this project, students as well as associates, become more aware of business autonomy as a possible alternative to regulated employment. We integrate various building blocks into one concept which gradually shapes and escorts all the stages of establishing a business. This project forms an integral part of the EXIST III ― Initiative of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWI).

In 2010, as in 2008 and 2009, we organized numerous summer and winter sessions as well as workshops and informative events targeting specific groups to stimulate their interest in the subject of entrepreneurship and to activate their existing potential. For example, we held multi-day summer sessions for creative idea generation in interdisciplinary teams. Through this effort, the founders and teams of founders achieved access to the support and counselling resources of the “Gründervilla” on the campus of BTU Cottbus, including Internet connections, copy machines, fax machines, and a library specialized in the subject of business start-ups. In 2009 and 2010, more than 20 teams took advantage of the resources of the Gründervilla (“entrepreneurship villa”).

The highlights of both 2009 and 2010 were the events associated with the activities in line with the Global Entrepreneurship Week. In 2009, the Gründervilla offered its own mini-workshops. One was offered through an exhibition of regional entrepreneurs that was organized and presented by the pupils of Max-Steenbeck Secondary School; another was organized through a questionnaire with lottery-drawn prizes. In 2010, the Gründervilla concentrated on the hot topic in Brandenburg, the corporate succession. Together with the Brandenburg Agency for Structure and Work, the Cottbus Chamber of Crafts, and the National Foundations Agency, and with the aid of local experts, we conducted a well-attended panel discussion on November 16, 2010.

“MobIUP” mobilization of the innovative potential in students of the technological sector to launch businesses through seminars on start-up companies

The MobIUP project was successfully completed in the summer of 2010. Within the framework of this project, we received the cooperation of Prof. Arnold Picot (Institute for Information, Organization, and Management) of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich. Together, we examined ways to activate the entrepreneurial potential of students, taking into consideration various conditions, (learning) needs and learning results that differentiate students. We especially analyzed whether students require additional seminars and training sessions. The results were presented to guests from all over Germany during a two-days workshops at the end of June and prompted discussion of the implications of science, education, politics, and economics. The findings of the research show, for example, that it is not useless to differentiate generally with regard to gender, but rather it is better to differentiate between different target groups of the start-up promotion.

Europe INNOVA ― Industry sector-specific innovation operations

Within the scope of the European project INNOVA, we reinforce existing skills related to traditional innovation paradigms and we incorporate them into new sectors. In addition, we carry out inter-sector analyses to enable an easier evaluation of innovation structures and innovation capacities. The focal points are value-added networks, lead markets, rapidly growing industrial sectors (“Gazellen“), service and organizational innovations, as well as intellectual property management and market failure.

Provision of services productivity

In this project, we make a distinction between two important subject matters. On the one hand, it is necessary to investigate the extent to which the concept of productivity that emerged in the commercial goods industry can provide adequate measurement and evaluation tools in the services sector. On the other hand, there is a need for the development of business instruments and business methods that will enable businesses to measure and improve the productivity of their services provision.

New-generation methods of biotechnology

The core focus of this project is the monitoring and evaluation of strategy processes jointly termed the "New-Generation Methods of Biotechnology" through the application of innovations and technology analyses. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has introduced a long-term strategy process guided by public research organizations and numerous experts from various disciplines in the fields of science and economics. The BMBF introduced the strategy to promote the development of new-generation biotechnological methods. Essentially, the aim is to combine engineering with life sciences into a non-cellular bio-production technology to create socially relevant and socially accepted, innovative, and groundbreaking concepts for new products, methods, and services in the industrial biotechnology context.

Diversity management

"Diversity Management ― Through Diversity into Success" is aimed at achieving long-lasting and effective changes to both the working culture and the organizational culture of BTU Cottbus. Through changes to the human resources development and business culture, and thanks to diversity management, BTU has qualified for the handling of minorities, among other groups. The project should be conducive to the creation of valuable diversity exposure in the workplace and to the increase in professional satisfaction with one's work. The advantages of diversity management and equal opportunity should evolve and be tested on the basis of internal learnable methods and instruments of implementation (adapted from Diversity Management Project at BTU Cottbus).

Innovation Day goes international: Prague 2010

The “Innovation Day 2010” scientific conference took place on May 21, 2010, at the University of Economics in Prague. Innovation Day conferences are held at various locations every year or every second year, each focused on a different question on the general subject of radical innovation. The first conference was organized in 2007 at BTU Cottbus; the second was held in 2008 at the Regensburg University.

The basic aim of the 2010 conference was to promote European cooperation between the industrial and academic sectors in line with technology and innovation management. Its focal point was the exchange of experiences among businesses, researchers, and politicians in Europe, with special attention given to Germany and the Czech Republic.

In addition to workshops on these subjects, the conference also offered motivational speeches. Speakers included Prof. Oliver Gassmann (St. Gallen University) and Alexandra Rudysarova (CEO of Agentur CzechInvest), as well as Alex Castellarnau (IDEO, Palo Alto, USA), Dr. Stefanie Biala (Vodafone Group R&D), Jane Gilson (CEO of Microsoft Czech Republic), and David Vrba (CEO of 3M Czech Republic).
