Thank you for sharing our goal to provide as many children as possible with a quality music

education and in turn change lives through the extraordinary impact that music can have on

a child’s development.

The D’Addario Foundation invests in the highest quality, most impactful music education

programs in the world. Our mission focuses on three main touch points; during-school

instruction that provides traditional as well as contemporary approaches to attracting

students to music; after-school programming in under-served areas, that not only provides

music instruction but a safe-haven for at-risk children; and music as a form of social inclusion,

giving special needs individuals the chance to engage with others, mentor and be mentored.

By attacking the landscape of music education on these three fronts, we positively affect

social change and foster better citizens of the world.

After a moving performance by a quartet from one of the programs the D’Addario Foundation

supports during the President’s Committee for Arts and Humanities Awards for After-School

Arts Programming, Michelle Obama stated:

All of these young people have some kind

of potential in them. And if we don’t invest

in them as a nation, regardless of where

they come from or what color they are, if we

don’t invest in them, we lose. Imagine this

talent bottled up in these kids unexplored,

un-invested. There are millions of kids like

this in this country who do not have the

resources to become everything that they

could be. And shame on us if we can’t do

this better. Fortunately, these programs are

doing the job that sometimes the bigger

society fails to do.

As grant makers, our primary goal is to identify the best and support precisely these types of programs.

We are incredibly proud of not only our selection ability, but also of the accomplishments of our partner

programs, particularly those that have existed long enough to conclusively reveal incredible outcomes

for the children who participate, such as improved academic performance, higher graduation rates,

and students who are the first generation in their family to apply to and attend college.

Thanks to all of our partners and supporters who make giving a powerful reality every day, and to

those who understand the significant opportunity we have to make a difference in the world.

Sincerely,

Suzanne D’Addario Brouder

D’Addario Foundation Director

WELCOME TO THE D’ADDARIO FOUNDATION ANNUAL GIVING REPORT 2016

MISSION STATEMENTThe D’Addario Foundation is a unique non-profit grant-making organization providing

monetary and product support to high-quality, sustainable music instruction programs

on the front-line to improve access to music education. We support programs that

bring music back into communities and schools to get kids playing as early and as

frequently as possible. The D’Addario Foundation believes in the transformative power

of music, and that mentoring and building communities through music can positively

affect social change.

OVERVIEWThe D’Addario Foundation is a global leader in finding, funding, and partner ing with

the most transformative music education organizations in the world. Through

a rigorous application process, we provide micro-grants to up to 200 organizations

annually in a diverse range of communities with unique needs. We consider

ourselves to be pioneers in seeding these independent grassroots not-for-profits.

In the absence of music education in our school systems, these programs are filling

the gaps in equity and achievement that exist, and using robust, comprehensive,

innovative music instruction as a social transformation tool to better the lives of

the children they serve. If children spend hours a day, for weeks and years, learning

to make music together, they can overcome difficult circumstances and become

productive and engaged citizens. We see firsthand that inclusion in collectively

striving towards musical beauty is a powerful and effective force.

The D’Addario Foundation believed in us from the beginning.

In 2001, we envisioned a community with outstanding guitar

education in our schools, we thought we could do it, and we

just needed the support to make it happen. D’Addario was

with us when we had just 15 students in one school, and

has stuck with us as our program has grown to serve over

3,000 diverse kids each day in over 40 local schools.

THE CHALLENGEStudents in low-income neighborhoods with little to no arts

engagement are 5x more likely to drop out of school.

50% - estimated high school drop-out rates in the 50 largest U.S. cities.

Only 40% of high schools in the U.S. require coursework in music and art to graduate.

THE SOLUTIONIndependent arts organizations run by passionate and

entrepreneurial leaders bring high-quality music instruction back into communities in a unique and effective way.

THE DIFFERENCEThe programs supported by the D’Addario Foundation provide

much more than just an introduction to music education.

“At Darwin Elementary School in the face of budget cuts, the principal made the choice to take the schools 30 violins out of storage and put them back

into active use. We were called in to make that happen. We found them literally in a room full of old dust and cobwebs. The violin cases still had the music inside. Everything was dated in May 1996. That’s over 20 years ago!”

OUR APPROACH

Through a disciplined biannual grant application process, funding decisions

are made based on various criteria. Some of the benchmarks include:

1. Level of need of those served

2. Affordability and intensity of program

3. Strength of leadership and staff

4. Plans for sustainability and growth

5. Economically sound budgets

6. Commitment to evaluation and results

PROVEN achievement and POSITIVE outcomes are rewarded with increased funding.

Programs must report to us and be reviewed on an annual basis before they can

reapply for support.

OUR PROCESS

After many years of reviewing thousands of programs, we are

confident in our ability to invest in the highest-quality grassroots

programs with the greatest likelihood for long-lasting impact.

• Letter of inquiry and grant application review

• Site visits and interviews

• Supplemental research

• Analysis of financial data and outcomes

• Advice from our knowledgeable staff,

educators and artists in the field

The programs chosen represent some of the most transformative independent

not-for-profits MAKING MUSIC POSSIBLE ALL OVER THE WORLD.

FOUNDATION GRANT MAKING

Thanks to support from the D’Addario Foundation, we

have tripled our enrollment over 3 years. We have also

started a high school program that will bridge the gap

from 8th grade to college/adulthood. With music

programs at two nearby universities, we hope to provide

a path to college for at-risk kids through music.

DIVERSITY OF GRANTEESThe D’Addario Foundation believes in awarding

support to a diverse range of programs in different

forms of musical genre and discipline. The belief is

that there is not a one-size-fits-all solution to music

education. Part of what makes the programs we

support unique is their in-depth understanding of the

communities they serve and their ability to develop

programs that will attract participants.

El Sistema KenyaKaris Crawford, American violinist and educator, moved to Nairobi in 2007, co-founded

the Kenyan Youth Orchestra in 2010 and established the El Sistema program in

2014 with three Kenyan women. Providing after-school programming to slum-based

children, El Sistema Kenya currently serves 80 students with a waiting list of 300.

Music Fund – BelgiumMusic Fund is a humanitarian project that supports musicians and music schools in conflict

areas and developing countries. The organization collects instruments, repairs them and

gives them a second life in 16 projects in Africa, the Middle East and Central America.

Music Fund also trains instrument repairers and offers the exchange of teaching skills.

Chords of Peace – Democratic Republic of the CongoVolunteer-trained musicians facilitate daily music instruction in camps in conflict areas

with the ambitious goal of using music education to help rehabilitate children. It is their

belief that these camps not only allow children affected by conflict to have an outlet for

self-expression, but also provide the solace of social inclusion after witnessing their

community torn apart by violence. Reclaiming lost childhood through music camps,

these children will use the arts to cope with their shared exposure to violence.

LONG ISLAND LESSON PROGRAMIn its third year, the D’Addario Long Island Lesson Program provided 30 weeks

of free stringed instrument instruction during after-school hours, 3 days a

week for 2 hours a day, to over 25 third through sixth grade students from

the Copiague public schools on Long Island. This program not only focuses

on instrument instruction but building a close-knit community and sense of

belonging and achievement for these students. Through a partnership with

not-for-profit Harmony Program, the general management and facilitation of

instruction is led by the Harmony team. Teaching recruitment, training and

review is also managed by Harmony.

The school does not currently offer such a music program; in fact, the Copiague

elementary schools have not had a string program in over 30 years. In addition,

over 70% of the student population qualifies for free or reduced lunch. Access to

music, if not available during school hours, is rarely an option for these children.

SALON CULTIVATION EVENT

In February 2016, the D’Addario Foundation

officially launched its fundraising efforts with

an intimate salon event featuring performances

by Julian Lage and a student from one of our NY

partner programs. Food was prepared by Tom

Colicchio and staff.

MUSIC MAKES YOU BENEFIT

The D’Addario Foundation’s first-ever large scale benefit event, Music Makes You,

hosted at the BRIC on September 22, 2016 was a great success. Blake Mills serving

as musical director curated a unique performance featuring Marc Ribot, Kaki King,

Janis Ian, Lucius, Karen O. and Smokey Hormel. The musical performances were a

highlight of the evening culminating in a surprise appearance by Jackson Browne.

The Foundation video was premiered at this event as well as the designation of

a Program of the Year award sponsored by D’Angelico Guitars presented to the

Harmony Project of America.

D’ADDARIO PERFORMANCE SERIES

Honoring the Foundation’s legacy, the

D’Addario Performance Series was

re-established in New York City in 2010.

Since that time, the D’Addario Foundation

has presented over 30 of the world’s

most talented emerging guitarists in their

debut performance at iconic halls such as

Carnegie and the 92nd Street Y. Praised

as the “best date night ever,” this intimate

event showcases the incredibly high level

of talent in guitar today.

Artists performing in the D’Addario

Performance Series also take the time to

visit NY-area music education programs to

share their talent and discipline with the

children of New York City.

IN CONCLUSIONFar too many children’s personal and economic circumstances leave them

marginalized. By 4th grade, American children from low-income homes are two

grade levels behind their more affluent peers. This gap extends to four years by

12th grade with devastating socio-economic consequences ultimately resulting in

extraordinarily high drop-out rates throughout the US. Addressing these children’s

needs as early as possible with inclusive, engaging music education has proven

to effectively combat these negative factors.

We hope to make the D’Addario Foundation synonymous with high-quality, high-

impact music education and firmly establish our organization as the preeminent

leader in partnering with transformative independent not-for-profits. While today

we support multiple endeavors and provide a diverse portfolio of high-impact

investments for donors, we are constantly considering who and how we partner

to bring the greatest outcomes to as many as possible. The overarching goal

is to permanently shift perceptions enough to see music and arts at the forefront

of every child’s well-rounded education and used as a powerful social, cognitive

and remediation tool.
