have the expertise to maintain a profitable enterprise.

Upside is about community resourcefulness Upside works within existing Nepali frameworks to connect villages with government programs and expertise to source much needed services.

Project impact in the Mustang region- Regional villages in Mustang are considering enterprise as a way of funding schools and other social outcomes due to the Upside apple orchard achievements. - The success of the apple orchard thus

far has local farmers asking “how can we do that?”- Local farmers are seeking expert advice from the regional agricultural centre.

The FutureOur vision is to grow a model for sustainable development that can be used by villages across Nepal.

What’s Upside?Upside is about community resilience, self-reliance and resourcefulness.

An Australian non-profit organisation which supports Nepalese villages to develop and sustain local enterprises which channel funds to support social outcomes in the community.

How we workUpside partners with Nepali organisations, able to connect village leaders with expertise in community planning, enterprise development and project management.

Building community resilience through enterpriseUpside seeks to assist sustainable development at the village level through locally-owned and managed social enterprises. Upside may assist the enterprise through its start-up phase by providing seed capital or by linking village enterprises to other capital on manageable repayment terms.

Upside is about community self-reliance. Upside provides capacity building in the areas of community planning, business development, business management and technical skills training so communities

With each passing year, we have the pleasure to meet more and more good people. As our community grows so does our possibility to make change in Nepal.

Upside would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the generosity we have received from our team of volunteers and supporters in 2014, both new and old faces.

And, as the Christmas season comes once more, Upside would like to wish each and every member of our community a happy and safe new year.

We cannot wait to see you in 2015, ready to take on new challenges and continue to grow and refine our model for sustainable development. Thank you for all that you do!

“With growth comes change, we call this our learning”

After 5 years of success working in Nepal and Australia there is a sense of change in the Upside camp.

Our Co-manager and Founder Cal Foulner set off on his own adventure and fellow Co-manager Freya Shearer left on a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University. In Nepal our learnings from Ghiling village are creating more oppurtunities than ever

before to work in new villages and with new people.

ParkrunOn December 13th Upside launched the first ever Parkrun in Cottesloe. What’s Parkrun? It’s a 5km free timed run that happens around the world every Saturday morning at 8am.

Dinner for DollarsThis year marked the first ever “Dinner for Dollars” held at Himalayan Nepalese

AN EVOLVINg UPSIDE IN AUSTRALIA

Over the past years Upside has built a team of dedicated people all of whom are integral to our projects in Nepal.

Restaurant in Mosman Park. The night introduced many new faces into the Upside community as they embarked on an adventure through Nepal with guest high altitude mountaineer, Patrick Hollingworth. We hope to use the funds from the night to bring our project leaders Tenzin and Ram to Australia in the near future.

Forage Victoria We’re busy trialing all the best recipes in Victoria and meeting the chefs and farmers behind them. With renowned food photographer Jess Shaver and ex-master chief contest Julia Jenkins, it’s sure to be epic.

VenntureVennture is a two wheeled research adventure headed by Cal Foulner and

fellow Upsider Andrew. They’re in search for inspiration and oppurtunity for win-win-win business that combines people, planet and profit. We hope that what ever comes out of Vennture will be a part of Upside’s vision of funding our projects through social business into the future.

Upside AdventuresInterested in seeing our projects first hand? The oppurtunity is coming soon...

Social BusinessThe perfect combination between charity and business is where our vision lies for the future fundraising of Upside. Through projects like Forage, Vennture and Upside Adventures we hope to sustain our projects through more then just corporate sponsors and the 100 roots club.

WHISPERS FROM NEPAL

“SUCCESS IS THE COMMUNITY STANDINg

ON IT’S OWN FEET” TENzIN CHOMPEL

Ghiling Apple Orchard Nestled along the Kaligandaki River at an altitude of 3570 metres, the Ghiling Apple Orchard is about a 45 minute walk from the town of Ghiling in the Mustang region of Nepal. The eight hundred apple trees in Stage 1 of the apple orchard have been a huge success. The apple trees have grown better than expected and are well established with many trees now over head height. Some trees were left unpruned and have fruiting spurs this year so may bear small volumes of fruit next year. A drip irrigation system will be installed in early 2015 when the ground thaws to keep the trees well watered. Planting of Stage 2 will commence in February 2015; this will be a small planting as much of the 2015 budget will be spent establishing the drip irrigation.

Ghiling Village SchoolWhen the apple orchard is profitable, the income will support the Ghiling Community School. This school serves the Ghiling children, as well as, children throughout the Mustang region. Currently eighty-two students are attending this PreK – Year

7 School and fifty-eight children live in the boarding house. School attendance is 98% and the students’ academic performance has been exceptional on Nepal National exams.

The ‘Tuck Shop” program in Makaikhola, Kaski District, Nepal‘Tuck Shop’ program at Janakalyan School in Makaikhola commenced the 1st of August 2014 at the request of local teachers wanting to see higher rates of school attendance at their school. Janakalyan School provides education for children in the nine village area of the Bhachok VDC (Village Development Committee) in the Kaski District of Nepal. Approximately 63 students are participating daily in the program. Attendance is recorded for participating students and personal hygiene is taught and encouraged daily. The Nepali Ministry of Education has shown interest in the program due to the increase in school attendance and parent satisfaction.

100 ROOTS FOR LONg TERM CHANgE

Becoming a 100 Roots members is the most sustainable way to support Upside – and joining is not as hard as you might think!

WHAT’S THE 100 ROOTS CLUB?To sustain the work in Nepal, Upside has established a network of generous, active supporters in Australia, who volunteer expertise and share a commitment to Upside’s way of working. A growing community of Upsiders is connected through various awareness raising activities and events in Perth. Our core group of supporters in Australia are called the 100 Roots Club. Members of the 100 Roots Club provide Upside with a $1.00 day pledge.

100 ROOTS FOR SUSTAINABLE CHANGEUpside plans to become a financially self-sustaining organisation within 5 years. We are slowly becoming less reliant on traditional fundraising models and generating more revenue through social enterprise. As part of this journey, we launched our first social enterprise project, “Forage”, in November 2012. “Forage” cookbook features recipes and stories from over 60 of WA’s best chefs and restaurants, and raised more than $120,000

for Upside in 2012/13. Building on the success of “Forage WA”, “Forage Victoria” will be launched in 2015.

Think of a 100 Roots Club membership as an investment:1. in sustainable agribusiness projects in Nepal which act as catalysts for long-lasting improvements in village health and education

2. in the future of Upside’s work as we transition into a social enterprise

HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER?There’s a table at the event with all the info you need to know and you might even get

a tap on the shoulder from one of our team members.

If you missed out on signing up to the 100 Roots Club at the event, never fear, we have forms available on our website at www.upsidenepal.org/getinvolved. All you have to do is download them, print them out, fill them in and post them back to PO Box 280 Cottesloe WA 6910. Alternatively, send us an email at [email protected].

A big thank you from the entire Upside team to our current 100 Roots Members for your ongoing support.

UPSIDE ExHIBITION ARTIST PROFILES

JESSICA WYLDER

Jessica grew up on a working farm in Margaret River. Her passion for landscape photography was fuelled whilst being constantly enveloped by nature and the wild weather traveling across the fields, however it was travel that made her more interested in photographing people and cultures over recent years. She now considers her strength and passion to be literally passionate people; those dedicated to a cause, be it their career, a charity, love (for example weddings!) or some other achievement that they are striving to reach or promote through photography. She would eventually love to focus primarily on promoting local and sustainably focused industries and people.

JARRAD SENG

Jarrad is an Australian-based photographer, filmmaker and creative director with a special love for music, travel and the arts. He has gained international recognition for his work with high profile artists such as Passenger (UK), Matchbox 20 (USA) and Ed Sheeran (UK). In recent years Jarrad has established himself as one of Perth’s most prolific creatives, working on projects as diverse as international tours, hidden concerts, art installations and short films.

His work has been viewed by tens of millions worldwide and has featured on MTV, BBC1, Buzzfeed, VH1, Channel V, Canon advertisements, The Australian, Rolling Stone and numerous other media outlets, publications and blogs. In 2013 Jarrad was selected as a finalist for WA Young Person of the Year.
