Annotated Bibliography Primary Sources Books Swift, Wiley H., ed. The Doctor Looks at Child Labor. New York: National Child Labor Committee, 1928. This book from the Iowa State University Library gave us lots of information on the National Child Labor Committee. The useful source also had lots of quotes from doctors, which we used on the “Child Labor” page. The doctors overwhelmingly said that any young child working was at risk of diseases. They also explained why adults were not in as much risk as the children were. We used most of this information on the “Child Labor” page. Newspapers Bismarck Daily Tribune (Bismarck, ND). “Special Favors to Tennessee Canneries.” August 27, 1915. This newspaper article from the Library of Congress told us about the efforts to pass child labor laws that apply to all states. It said that some states had no age requirements and that should be changed. It also talked about young boys getting into trouble because they were exposed to the real world sooner than they should have. We used this article to help us understand what the public thought of child labor and the frustrations the National Child Labor Committee faced. The Labor World (Duluth, MN). “Heart Aches for Children.” September 29, 1917. This newspaper article from the Library of Congress told us about a factory owner who was heartbroken because the KeatingOwen Child Labor Act prohibited him from hiring children in his factory. This gave us the view of someone who supported child labor. We were pretty shocked by this viewpoint. We used this information to better our knowledge of the supporters of child labor and how they felt about the KeatingOwen Act and child labor in general. Photos and Illustrations Darling, J.N. “Ding”. It isn’t the healthful labor of the youth. Illustration. August 17, 1907. CDROM. The Editorial Cartoons of J.N. “Ding.” Darling. Our teacher had the entire collection of “Ding” Darling cartoons on CDROM. This cartoon from 1907 said that child labor was only profiting the employers not children. We used this cartoon to help us show that there were others besides Lewis Hine who were for child labor reform.
