PUNLAD THE OFFICIAL STUDENT PUBLICATION OF LA SALLE GREEN HILLS – ADULT NIGHT HIGH SCHOOL FIRST TRIMESTER S.Y. 2015-2016 VOL. XIV NO. 1
By Alvin Paul M. Montealegre, 5-A
Grade 9 examinees obtain 100%
passing rate in TESDA Assessment
By Mark Joseph T. Tacubansa, 10-B
Grade 9 students who took the TESDA-Administered TVET
Competency Assessment and Certification for Food and Beverages Ser-
vices (FBS) NC II and Computer Systems Servicing (CSS) NC II acquired
100% passing rate held last June 20, 2015 and August 8, 2015 respectively.
21 students from FBS NC II under Miss Mercedes B. Andrade
(Trainer) and 11 students (8 Deaf and 3 Hearing) from CSS NC II under
Mr. George Cadano (Trainer) and Mr. Rodel Laurel and Mrs. Rowena
Jingco (Sign Language Interpreters) passed the said assessments.
Mr. Roy S. Daz, the Administrative Affairs Coordinator, said that
our Grade 9 students were not only enrolled as high school students but
also as TVET students. They were required to take one TVET course re-
gardless of their chosen tracks to help them find immediate employment.
The school submitted their names in its MIS-0203 Enrolment Report to
TESDA last year. As a derivative they were urged to take the TESDA
Competency Assessment and Certification. ‚It is also aligned with the big
goal of ANHS to produce graduates who are duly certified by the govern-
ment as competent workers and entrepreneurs. In the K to 12 curriculum,
a student is encouraged to have an NC II at the end of Grade 10. In
ANHS, a student gets his first certification in Grade 9,‛ said Mr. Daz. He
also affirmed that ‚The 100% passing rate in FBS NC II and CSS NC II
speaks of the kind of education we offer to our night school students. It
only shows that we have superb Trainers and enough facilities necessary
for students to be trained according to TESDA standards. This also
speaks, I shall say, of how determined and how committed to excellence
ANHS students are.‛
ANHS welcomes Miss Agnes as the new principal
succeeding in life, contributing to society, and likewise transforming
other’s lives.‛ She also said to ANHS students, ‚You are all pure souls.
You have unexplored gifts. You have potentials, and if you remember
that you can do everything with God’s grace, you can achieve ALL your
goals.‛ Her message to ANHS students is, ‚Don’t give up.‛
Miss Agnes also shared why she became a teacher. She revealed
that when she was in high school, she did not take her study seriously
though she knew that she was capable of achieving more. She did not
know what course to take in college, but in the middle of her last year in
high school, their Literature teacher, Miss Pangan introduced great liter-
ary works and readings to her. She became hooked to that totally differ-
ent world. She also began to take more interest in Physics, Trigonome-
try, and Advance Algebra and even aced English. That was also the year
that she knew she would be a teacher.
Reading has been evident in her as she shared her favorite au-
thors based on her reading interest: Soseki Natsume’s ‚I am a Cat,‛ Jes-
sica Zafra (locally, if I want to read my own mind), Salman Rushdie
(items that I cannot put down.), Nicholas Sparks (if I want a good cry),
Jeffrey Archer (for an instant literary gratification), Paulo Coehlo (if I
have been silent for a long time I must be reading his works), Haruki
Murakami’s 1Q84, and of course Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love.
As a successful woman and being in the academe for 20 years ,
she also has a lot of goals that she wants to achieve including to experi-
ence teaching in the barrios, to learn FSL and French, to go the Holy
Land and attend the mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, to visit all the museums
in Europe, to check out all archeological sites especially in Egypt and
China, to sit in front of Van Gogh’s original Sunflower painting for at
least an hour, to swim without fear, to earn her Ph.D. (either at DLSU or
at Teacher’s College, Columbia U). And there are more!
‚I salute you for being
strong. Continue and persevere
for what you have started‛ were
the words of Br. Victor A. Franco
FSC in his message to the students
of ANHS during the ‚Magandang
Gabi Po, Br. President‛ held last
August 19, 2015 at Br. Rafael S.
Donato FSC Center for the Per-
forming Arts (BDC).
The De La Salle Brothers
who participated in the activity
were Br. Victor A. Franco FSC
(LSGH President), Br. Emmanuel
C. Hilado FSC (LMO and Pearl
Project Head), Br. Ruben
Caluyong FSC (ALS Registrar),

Br. Vic salutes ANHS studes
By Kristine Ruth P. Carelo, 10-B
In order to know more
and to get inspiration from the
Brothers, the Student Council (SC)
officers gathered questions from
students and the Brothers verified
their answers by raising the
thought bubble placards with ei-
ther waley (wala) or havey (meron).
Questions include: “Naisip din po
ba ng isang Brother na pumasok sa
pulitika? Sino po ang humikayat sa
inyo na maging Brother? May opor-
tunidad ba ang mag-aaral ng ANHS
na maging Brother?”
Niño Ricco Wong of 10A
and Rhodora Macahilig of 9A
served as masters of ceremonies.
The event was organized by the
SC headed by Mr. Baldwin Noeli-
to I. Que, Student Affairs and SC
Moderator.
‚I want to be remembered
as someone who loved with all my
all,‛ were the words of Mrs. Agnes
C. Alonsozana, the new ANHS
Principal when she was asked in
an interview how she wanted to
be remembered as a principal.
The ANHS community is
blessed to have Miss Agnes, the
former Assistant Principal of
Grade School, who will lead the
department in its endeavors of
continuing the mission of St. La
Salle in providing quality Catholic
education to the marginalized sec-
tor of society.
She described ANHS stu-
dents as ‚empowering.‛ When she
was asked how it feels to be a
principal of ANHS, she said she requested a lot of prayers, and knew that
it will be a different way of life. It is also an opportunity to be holy ac-
cording to her. When asked on the difference between the Day and Night
high school, she said that ‚all three schools (GS,HS, and ANHS) were
born out of the Founder’s desire to make education accessible to as many
as possible. They just differ in translation, but are directed towards the
same goal.‛ She also talked about her expectations from ANHS students.
‚I expect all students to take their studies seriously, because we, teachers,
are taking our preparations in more than the same manner. We have
great dreams for ANHS, and on top of the list is to see each student

outstanding studes
‚Magtiwala kayo sa in-
yong kakayahan at magdasal.
Gamitin sa kabuluhan ang naka-
mit na tagumpay.‛ This was the
advice of Welvin Binay, ANHS
alumnus Batch 2008 in his inspira-
tional message during the Under-
graduates’ Honors Assembly held
last June 25, 2015 at the Br. Rafael
S. Donato FSC Center for Perform-
ing Arts (BDC). The said annual
event honors undergraduate stu-
dents who manifested exemplary
performance in their academics,
deportment, and perfect attend-
ance last year. It served as recog-
nition of their hard work and ded-
ication to reach their dreams.
Mrs. Agnes C. Alonsoza-
na (ANHS Principal), Mr. Rheal D.
Dayrit (Former ANHS Principal),
and Br. Emmanuel C. Hilado FSC
(LMO and Pearl Head) conferred
the awards to the students.
After the awarding was
the message of inspiration by Bi-
nay who shared his humble begin-
nings as a dishwasher. It did not
hinder him from finishing his
studies, but it served as a chal-
lenge for him to work harder. He
is now a public school teacher in
Quezon province. After that,
Celine Guinid, the recipient of
Academic award gave the re-
sponse. She said that ‚Everything
happens for a reason.‛ She
thanked the ANHS community
for giving students opportunity to
reach their dreams.
The inspiration students
got from Binay and Guinid made
them realize that they can change
their lives by studying for their
brighter future. There is still a rea-
son why they have to push for-
ward until they reach their goals.

Nina Joan Raagas at Cristine C. Ocampo, 7-A

Absences and tardiness are two of the challenges that students
in ANHS face which affect their performance in class. The school, how-
ever, has contributed to help solve this predicament.
Last July 20, during the launching of the Lasallian Mission
Week, Mrs. Agnes C. Alonsozana informed the ANHS community of
the program called ‚Pan La Salle.‛ Students who have never been ab-
sent nor late in class for the entire week will receive monetary assis-
tance from an anonymous benefactor. This program aims to aid stu-
dents in their transportation allowance so they can improve their
attendance.
Few weeks after its implementation, there were mixed obser-
vations and reactions. We observed that there were some students who
would go to school early, but they do not attend advanced remedial
classes or review their lessons. Instead, they just hang out with their
classmates. After a month, few changes were observed. Majority of
ANHS students became very much different from before. A lot of them
are doing new routine. They manage to handle their time. Some are
doing group review, attending advanced remedial, or helping some of
the students who are having difficulty in different subject areas. We see
them busy, but if we talk to them, we notice that they are doing some-
thing unlike before. We believe that the students are now are more
sensitive when it comes to time management.
A lot of teachers are happy because students are very active
and are participating in every activity inside the classroom. Aside from
decreasing number of absences and tardiness for each class, the stu-
dents are able to enhance their capabilities when it comes to time man-
agement.
We are very thankful to the benefactor who chose to stay anon-
ymous. We thank him for his humility and generosity to help us not
only to improve our class performance but also to improve ourselves.
We are not going to make a promise to you not to be late but we assure
you that we are going to value our time. We are not going to waste it
on the things that are not really important to us. We will make use of
our time to be more productive individuals.

FIRST TRIMESTER 2015-2016 5
School is likened to a race. We have same tracks and goals but we don’t
have the same finish line. Because of that, the simple things are getting complicat-
ed because of how we react to what is happening around us.
Let’s say there are different kind of students. There are smart students
who are always getting higher grades. There are students who can still compete
with the other students who have higher grades even if they have been absent for
almost a week. There are also students who are having difficulties with their
academic performance even if they are always present in class. They get average
grade for their performance. The last I mentioned I think are the people who real-
ly need help. But who will help them? Our teachers are there to help. The reason
why our teachers are giving us a lot of works to do is because they want us to
understand what we have to learn inside the school and apply it when we go
outside the campus after we graduate. I can assure myself that I learned a lot of
things inside the school not just in academic.
They always say that if you study hard you will get higher grades. Well,
that is true, but so what? If we are talking about getting higher grades in school,
does it mean that we will get higher salary when we get a job after schooling? Do
I need to start studying hard for me to get a higher compensation? It is not like
that. I am not saying that getting higher grades is really unnecessary. Aside from
the pressure of being top student, grades also give students more courage to
study harder while others are not doing the same thing. Maybe some of them are
not interested and satisfied with what they’ve got or some have difficulty catch-
ing up with the lessons.
I accept that fact, but I don’t want to accept the reality that these stu-
dents who are always at the bottom of the class rankings are going to stay there
for a long time even if they don’t want to. Do we understand them or do we just
accept them that they cannot get out of their places? We only care about our
grades, but how about them? Do we care about their grades? Do we really un-
derstand the lessons the we learned inside the class? If you say yes then what did
you do? Just focus on the topic and ignore someone you knew who needs help.
Seeing those people is really normal, but we have to help by simply asking if they
don’t understand the lessons. We have to accept that every individual has a po-
tential to improve and sometimes we have to help them to do it. We are all stu-
dents here. We must help one another. We must care for one another, and we
must complete our run together.
I’ve always wondered just how many establishments would go
out of business once women started believing they were beautiful as
they are, particularly the products that perpetuate the notion that fair
skin is the epitome of acceptable beauty in our society. There simply
exists an expectation on women to look, walk, and talk a certain way.
God forbid you fall short of what has been the idea of what a girl/
woman ought to be, or you’ll have to deal with unsolicited advice on
how to make yourself socially acceptable, also known as statements
such as reducing your sugar intake would totally help you shed those
pounds! And it’s not out of concern over excessive amounts of lipids are
clogging your arteries and therefore of risk of a major health concern
like obesity. I’m sure we’ve all had our share of other people policing
how we should look, based on how traditional society has dictated, as if
it were an obligation to be aesthetically pleasing.
How about no? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not advocating for
women to stop brushing their hair once and for all or to neglect the need
for proper grooming altogether. I just don’t believe it is fair that there’s
this unnecessary burden of unwritten rule that even on days we don’t
feel like it, we must still force ourselves to put on some lipstick to avoid
being told we look like a zombie, having to lessen our blush-on just be-
cause someone said you look like a clown, or really just to bend over
backwards to meet society’s insane beauty standards. My only wish is
that women realize that pleasing others is not a priority; being comforta-
ble in their own skin is. Regardless of color, shape, size, there’s nothing
more divine than one who knows she is worth so much more than her
external appearance. After all, ‚in a society that profits from your self
doubt, liking yourself is a rebellious act.‛
at pagkalito.
‘’Footprints in the Sand,’’ na nagsabing ‚noong una dalawa kami ng
Is there a permanent solution to this very serious problem?
A 23.8 km highway, once also called Highway 69, is now a big
headache to the present administration and the commuters that have
been facing traffic congestion in EDSA every day. On September 7, 2015
the government assigned the PNP-HPG (Highway Patrol Group) to man-
age the traffic in EDSA, but sadly very minimal change has been seen.
Though traffic discipline was strictly implemented, the same heavy
traffic is still experienced. Atty. Francis Tolentino, MMDA Chairman,
said in an interview regarding the replacement of the MMDA traffic con-
stable and the traffic congestion issue that traffic discipline is just a mini-
mum percentage that causes congestion. There are a lot more to consider
to lessen the heavy traffic. It is not only the MMDA that should act upon
it. It should be the efforts of different government agencies like the
DPWH in road infrastructure, DTI, LTO and DOTC that regulates auto-
motive industry and issues franchise. According to statistics, there are
about 600 vehicles sold in the country every day. To date, there are about
1.4-2.6 million registered vehicles. Martin Andanar stressed out what
Atty. Tolentino said that the government should have ‚a macro perspec-
tive view‛ with regard to traffic solutions in Metro Manila. There are
about 16-19 million people in Metro Manila. One of the main problems
that caused heavy traffic in EDSA is the heavy volume of vehicles that
should be prioritized by the government. Our mass transportation like
trains should be improved. Infrastructures like tunnels and skyway will
be the key formulas in obtaining solutions in traffic congestion not only
in EDSA but in Metro Manila as a whole.

PANITIKAN
Pagod na Pakpak Ni Ryan L. Fampolme, 5-A
Cerca Trova Ni Angerico R. Salazar, 5-A
Mapabata, binata, dalaga, o matanda
Huwag mag-asal-hayop; maging makatwiran
Itama ang maling galaw. Huwag magpalamon sa sakit, oo ikaw!
Ikaw na mas tanging nakakaalam.

Morning sunshine dew sparkle in your eyes
Your lips are shining like stars in the night
When I look at your face, I can see the sky
I‟ve always wanted you here in my sight
Glamour and passion lie in your hand
My love is pure, outnumbered the sand
You put colors in my world, black and gray
You are the girl I‟ve always been dreaming and praying for
Now that you came conquering my past
You‟re not the first but you‟ll be the last
Every time you‟re here with me you make me happy
Can I ask you a word? Will you marry me?
Marry By Adrian T. Asañon, 5-B
A Lover’s Agony (for Danica)
By Alvin M. Montealegre, 5-B
Worn away within the secrets of admiration
My inner self-esteem drifts away by our collision
Those eyes of yours that speak in a form of gentleness
Your rosy red lips that are inevitable
for my naked eye to notice
Like a flower in bloom that longs
for raindrops of your affection
You‟re a gravitational pull that sets me apart
at the depths of my desperation
Every angle of your movement
that seems to be in coherence
Your sweet and impeccable smile
that drives my inner persistence
Don‟t let me into a rational feeling
that‟s been set by a typical mind
But please let me into an emotional feeling
with a touch of your affection that could not decline.
The Journey of Sun Wukong: Animal Freedom (continuation)
By Vergel Berona, 9-B
When Wukong arrived in Jade Palace, the animals
became wild. The animals were disturbing the people
from Jade Palace. Wukong needed to fix this situation of
the animals, so he asked the zoo keeper why the animals
were making trouble to the city. The zoo keeper said the
animals lack food to eat. Hearing that, Wukong decided to
let them free because the Jade Government ran out of sup-
ply for the zoo keeper due to their military finances.
Now Wukong got an idea to keep the city live in
peace. The zoo keeper gave him a whistle to call all the
animals. He blew the whistle and then the animals
followed him. He told the guards to open the gate of the
Jade Palace. After that when the animals were leaving the
city, Wukong used the power of his staff to create a sanc-
tuary for the animals. In the end, the animals lived freely,
and the people in Jade Palace won't be bothered again.

The Hill By John Tomas Abad, 8-B
“I cannot walk up,” said the boy to his sister. “It is
not possible to do it. I must stay here all my life. At the
foot of the hill, it is too terrible!”
“That is a pity!” said his sister. “But look, boy! I
have thought of a pleasant game for us. Take your step
and see how clear a foot print you can make in the dust.
Look at me! Every single line in my foot is printed. Now
you try, and see if you can do it well.”
Then the boy took his step. “Mine is clear too,” he
said.
“Do you think so?” asked his sister.
“See mine again here! Because I am heavier, the
print is deeper. Try again.”
And they we kept on step by step and matching on
my footprints, the boy is laughing to see gray dust puff
up between their base toes.
The boy looked down. “Why are we at the top of
the hill?”
“We are here now, my brother.”

FEATURES
Being a teacher is no easy task. These individuals are responsible
for developing the minds, enlightening the spirit, and shaping the moral
compass of their students, all the while dealing with personalities from
both ends of the spectrum. This year, the ANHS welcomes several new
teachers and staff to be part of our community. Let’s get to know each of
them.
Mr. Kervin M. Alcantara Jr. or ‚Sir Kervin‛ graduat-
ed from Philippine Normal University with a degree
in BS Biology for Teachers. He lives by the Bible
verse ‚I can do all things through Christ who
strengthens me.‛ This is manifested in the way he
took on the challenge to be a 10th Grade General Sci-
ence teacher and a 5th Year Physics Teacher despite
being a Biology Major. He recounts his fondest
memory so far as ‚when after a discussion on prob-
lem solving for gas laws, a Deaf student thanked me
for my clear explanation of the lesson and the whole class clapped their
hands for me, saying that they are starting to love my subject.‛ If he
could be remembered for one thing by his students, it would be a ‚cool
teacher – a teacher that can simplify complex ideas in Science and a
teacher that is not apprehensive/grumpy but can get along well with stu-
dents.‛
Teaching 8th and 9th Grade Mathematics is Mr.
Ronald M. Dela Cruz, also known as Onad, Nad ,
Nald, or ‚Sir Ronald.‛ He graduated from Siena
College of Taytay with a degree in Bachelor of Sec-
ondary Education major in Mathematics. He had
previously taught at Siena College of Taytay. His
travel each day from Antipolo going to school may
be ‚a workout‛ given the distance, but finds fulfill-
ment in being ‚a smiling teacher who would always
want the students to stand with their own feet. I
want them to remember me as a teacher who would always say that
‘every day is a chance.’‛ He fondly remembers being a CET Review
Teacher for the 5th year students from 9:00-9:45PM, mostly because he
had to recall on the spot certain Math topics he has not encountered in
quite some time. He says being a Math teacher of the hearing, especially
the Deaf may be ‚very challenging‛ but Sir Ronald is someone who be-
lieves in humility, honesty, love and care for others, and faith in God.
Ms. Rose Marie L. Guansing graduated from Eulo-
gio "Amang" Rodriguez Institute of Science and
Technology with a degree in Bachelor of Science in
Information Technology major in Food Technology.
She has previously taught at Pasig Catholic College,
St. Therese Taguig, and Asian Summit College. Cur-
rently, she teaches Bread and Pastry Production NC
II to the TVET students. She firmly believes that one
should ‚do unto others what you want others to do
unto you.‛ In the months that have passed since she
started teaching, her favorite moments are when the faculty members
and students share good camaraderie. Ms. Guansing wishes to be re-
membered as someone whose students will be at par with world class
standards of baking and pastry-making.
Ms. Maria Cecilia C. Bugayong graduated with a
degree in Bachelor of Science in Education major in
Social Science, and is a candidate for a Ph.D on De-
velopment Studies. She is currently the TLE Coordi-
nator in LSGH High School. She currently teaches
Cookery NC II to the TVET students, and has previ-
ously taught at Don Bosco school. She considers eve-
ry meeting with her students as her favorite
memory, and wishes her students would not forget that she had once
been their trainer. She lives by the Latin saying Domine, Opus Tuum
which means Lord, the work is yours.
Meet the new ANHS faculty and staff
By Celine L. Guinid, 5-B
Mr. Eric C. Guray graduated from University of the
Philippines-Diliman with a degree in Bachelor in
Physical education. He currently teaches MAPEH to
the ANHS students. He has previously taught at UP
Diliman, UP Los Baños, UPIS, and Quezon City Sci-
ence High School. His favorite moment is when he
sees his students ‚execute some drills in PE and
gain some skills and confidence through sports, es-
pecially my Deaf students.‛ He wishes to be re-
membered as a teacher who is passionate. He lives
by the thought that ‚everything could be my last. So I just enjoy and try
to give my best always.‛
Mr. Edward Leo B. Mitra is a fresh graduate from
the LSGH-ANHS batch 2015 and currently works
for the night school as a Risographer/Office Helper.
His favorite memory so far in the ANHS goes back
to the days when he was still a student where his
batch won the back-to-back championship in bas-
ketball during the annual Sports Fest, and of course
his graduation day. When asked how he would like
to be remembered by the community, he says ‚gusto
katapos ng pag-aaral.‛ He is also someone who believes that ‚ang pagiging

greatest miracle you can perform.” - St. John Baptist De La Salle
