Welcome to the Reedy Creek Center for the Digital Sciences Magnet Middle School band program! With the right mindset and work ethic, students in our program can accomplish much in the way of musical excellence. Our aim is two-fold: to educate children through music performance and to instill a lasting appreciation of music in our students.

In an effort to meet these objectives, our program offers a wide range of educational and performance opportunities, both academic and extra-curricular in nature. This handbook is designed to inform parents and students of the expectations and opportunities of the RCMMS band program. After reading all the applicable sections of this handbook, please complete and return the necessary forms, found in your child’s band folder, by the following date:

Friday, September 8, 2017

I am happy that you as parents and students have chosen to be a part of our band program at RCMMS. It is my firm belief that, as with any other worthwhile endeavor, a student can gain from band what he/she is willing to put into it. With dedication and hard work, band can be one of life’s most rewarding experiences. It is my sincerest hope that through this program, young people will gain a deep appreciation for music as well as individual integrity and pride in their own accomplishments. I look forward to a very successful year as we strive to achieve our maximum musical potential here at Reedy Creek.

Musically Yours,

Angela Torres,Director of Bands,Reedy Creek Middle [email protected] (919) 460 – 3504, ext. 21500www.reedycreekmsband.org

Philosophy of Band and Music EducationIt is my philosophy that band is an incredibly valuable component in a child’s education for three reasons:

First, music is an important discipline in its own right. The arts help define our humanity, and their creative and expressive qualities help shape a child’s mind in ways that other disciplines simply cannot.

Second, music reinforces what students learn in other disciplines. Mathematical concepts are reinforced through rhythm and form. Scientific principles are reinforced through study of the acoustical properties of instruments, pitch, and ensemble. Language skills are reinforced in the vast vocabulary utilized daily by musicians. Historical and multi-cultural understanding is reinforced through the study of composers and the performance of a varied repertoire. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are developed regularly through practice and performance.

Third, social skills and citizenship are taught through participation in an ensemble. Responsibility, independence, and cooperation are traits that band students must master in order to be successful. Band students also learn the importance of setting goals, developing a plan of action, and working hard to achieve those goals.

3 Band and RCMMS Ensembles

InstrumentsEach student is expected to furnish his/her own instrument by purchasing or renting from one of the area music stores. The school has a few of the larger instruments that will be assigned to individuals in 7 th or 8th grade, and in some cases late 6th grade. Students using a school-owned instrument must fill out an instrument loan form and are responsible for the care of that instrument and any damages that occur. We strongly recommend that any instrument not covered under a

rental insurance plan be placed on a home-owners insurance policy. Please place an identification tag on the instrument, complete with name, address, and phone number. Parents should keep the instrument brand name and serial number on file at home as well.

Jazz BandOur jazz band is an extra-curricular activity offered in second semester. The band is open to saxophonists, trumpet and trombone players, guitarists, bass players, pianists, and percussionists. Interested students should speak with Ms. Torres about membership. Details about the attendance policy, rehearsal days and times, and rehearsal procedures will be sent home after auditions. The band will use First Place for Jazz as the books, along with supplementary pieces of music.

Marching Band / Pep BandThe pep band is designed to promote school spirit and enthusiasm in sports events and community events. The marching band is designed to perform at community parades and public performances. See the Tentative Calendar of Events for more information. Students who participate in these events may need to purchase a flip folder and music lyre for their instrument. Please see Ms. Torres for more details.

Musical Pit OrchestraThis ensemble performs with the musicals at RCMMS. Traditionally, the musicals take place in the spring. This group usually meets prior and after school for performances. Please see Ms. Torres for more details.

Private InstructionPrivate lessons, while not a requirement for all instruments, are strongly encouraged for students of all ability levels. As a student improves, a greater collection of literature becomes available to him/her and will enable him/her to excel, which in turn improves the band. With the aid of private instruction, students also find greater opportunity through experiences like all-county, all-district, and all-state band. A list of local private instructors is available in the band room or on the Wake County Bands website - http://www.wakecountybands.com

How to PracticeDaily practice time is essential for student success in band. All band students should spend a minimum of 20 minutes each day in individual practice. Daily practice time is homework for band. The guidelines below will help to organize your practice time. Remember, practice time is to be spent practicing, not watching the clock.

Practice in the same place each day. Be sure there are no distractions. Begin with long tones. Concentrate on producing a pleasing sound. Think about your breathing. Produce a steady

and controlled air stream. You should love your sound. It is yours and no one else's. No two musicians have the same tone. Always make sure that your tone is clear and beautiful.

Spend time on scales. Play them slowly at first and then work for speed. Work from your method book each day. Try to stay several lines ahead of the class. Work for accuracy and be sure to play everything on the page.

Practice in front of a mirror to check your embouchure, hand position, and posture. Practice your music. Work on the parts that you cannot play. Practice them slowly at first and then increase the

speed. Work one measure at a time for difficult parts. Once you are able to play a measure five times without mistakes then you can increase the tempo. The same goes for the entire exercise.

Pay careful attention to details such as: correct notes and fingerings, rhythms, key signatures and accidentals, signs and symbols, dynamics and articulations.

End by playing something just for fun. Swab woodwinds thoroughly and remove the reed, wipe it dry and return it to its case, empty water from brasses

and return instrument safely to case.

hours, please contact the band office phone number. On occasion, e-mails will not go through. It is not the director’s intention to ignore any parent, student, guardian inquiry.

Each student will document if they prefer to receive hard copies of materials. Only the students who document this in the beginning weeks of school will receive hard copies. All other persons should use the web-site and e-mail to receive the information. Please help us be green by opting for the digital information.

The best form of communication is E-MAIL: [email protected] Band Room Phone Number: (919) 460-3504, ext. 21500 RCMMS Band Webpage: www.reedycreekmsband.org RCMMS Webpage: http://reedycreekms.wcpss.net Parents/Guardian E-mails provided in the information sheet (to be handed back to Ms. Torres) will be used for a

group e-mail through WCPSS, individual communication, and group information.

Policies and ProceduresInstrument StorageStudents are expected to take their instruments home daily in order to practice. During the school day, students may store their instruments in a personal storage space in the band room. Students must adhere to the following stipulations while using these spaces (referred to below as lockers).

1. Only band students are allowed in the band room and instrument storage rooms.2. Lockers are to be used for storage of band instruments and other band-related materials only. Other school or

personal property should be kept in school lockers, which are assigned by the student’s homeroom teacher.3. It is recommended that small items be kept in the student’s backpack.4. Students are to use only the specific locker assigned to them.5. Students are not to write on lockers, put stickers on lockers, or otherwise vandalize them in any way.6. Trading or switching lockers may only occur with the permission of the student’s director.7. Instrument cases should be left under the student’s chair during class.8. Band students are expected to use a combination lock to secure their instrument in the band locker. The

combination should be given to Ms. Torres. 9. All band students must complete a WCPSS Personal Property Waiver.

Music and EquipmentAll members of the band program should show the utmost respect for school-owned property that is provided for individual use. This includes music, instruments, percussion equipment, music stands, etc. Students are held financially responsible for the damage or loss of any school property that has been assigned to them. Large items such as instruments require checkout through an official WCPSS instrument loan form.

8

Bus OvercrowdingSome buses are crowded due to the growing student population here at Reedy Creek. Bus drivers may request that students leave larger instruments at school. If this occurs, students should be polite, follow their instructions, and see Ms.

Page 9: Angela Torres, Director - reedycreekmsband.org€¦  · Web viewJazz Band. Marching Band/Pep Band. ... Practice them slowly at first and then increase the speed. ... improvised solo,

Torres the next day. These situations will be handled on an individual basis with the administration.

ConductBand Room Expectations:

1. I will respect others and all equipment2. I will be on time with a good attitude3. I will be prepared4. I will give my best effort5. I will make the best sound possible6. I will follow all procedures

Band Room Procedures:These procedures are designed to create a positive learning environment where students are able to learn and feel safe. Students who are unable to follow these basic rules and instructions can find themselves in silent lunch, In School Suspension, parent conferences, administrative conferences, or even lose the privilege of being a member of the band.

1. Upon arrival at school in the morning, students with instruments should report to the band room for proper instrument storage. Then students are to report to their grade level location. Please note, being late for putting your instrument in your locker is not an excuse and will cause for an unexcused tardy with your first period teacher.

2. Students must be in their assigned seats with instrument and all materials within two minutes after the official start time of class. These additional two minutes are to allow wind players to assemble instruments and percussionists to set up. They are not for socializing. Students must be in the band room by the tardy time.

3. Daily instructions and rehearsal order will be on the board. Students are expected to prepare accordingly. Materials will be checked daily.

4. Students can warm up if this privilege has been given to the class. Otherwise, assemble your instrument quickly and quietly. When Ms. Torres raises her hand, you should as well and immediately stop what you’re doing, and give her your undivided attention. Students are allowed to play only under the teacher’s direction for the duration of the class.

5. Students are to remain silent during rehearsal. If they wish to ask or answer a question, raising a hand is the appropriate way to signal the teacher.

6. Students are to remain engaged and participate actively during class. Work for other classes is not allowed during band class.

7. Students are not to have food, drink, candy, or gum in the classroom, except under special circumstances specified by the director. Clear water bottles with plain, non-flavored drinking water are acceptable.

8. Respect the property of others.a. Students should never touch or otherwise tamper with another student’s instrument, accessories, case, or other band

materials.b. Student must respect the room equipment. The music stands are not to be used as desks, written on, leaned on,

spun, or otherwise mistreated. The stands are designed for music and a pencil only. Violations will be treated as vandalism.

c. Percussion instruments are for percussionists only. Non-percussionists are not allowed to touch or move these instruments without specific permission from a director. This policy includes the piano and drum set.

9. Instruments must be stored on the proper shelves or cubicles, not on the floor (unless specified by the director).10. Percussionists should cover the timpani and mallet instruments and put away all accessories before being dismissed.11. Students are responsible for cleaning up their section area at the end of each band rehearsal. 12. Please remember, all WCPSS and RCMMS rules apply, including the unauthorized use of electronic devices. Such

equipment must be turned off and out of sight upon arrival to school. Any equipment will be turned into the front office.13. Students are not to enter the band office without permission from the Ms. Torres. 14. At the end of the school day, students may get their band instruments. Please do not ask your last period teacher to

leave early. If there is a problem with you getting your instrument and making your bus on time, please see Ms. Torres and arrangements can be made to help.

15. Students who will be late to their next period class due to a band related issue will be given a pass. Students are not allowed to use band as an excuse for tardiness. The only students excused will be ones with a pass from Ms. Torres.

16. If students need help, information sheet, extra music, etc. they should fill out the BAND HELP form and place this in the appropriate grade level box.

17. Trash such as old reeds, reed cases, paper, etc., must be put into a garbage can.

9

Band Room Procedures (Continued):

18. If a student must use the restroom, please raise your hand and ask the director. Please remember, restroom breaks

Page 10: Angela Torres, Director - reedycreekmsband.org€¦  · Web viewJazz Band. Marching Band/Pep Band. ... Practice them slowly at first and then increase the speed. ... improvised solo,

(during class) are for emergencies only. Students should wait to use the restroom between classroom changes, if at all possible. If a child has a medical condition that requires them to have access to the restroom at any time, please notify the director through e-mail or in writing. Students will need to sign-out when they leave the classroom. Due to logistics and safety, only one student may use the restroom at a time. Students should refrain from leaving the classroom the first and final ten minutes of class, due to transition logistics with the Healthful Living classes. Since students are allowed to bring water, in clear water bottles, it is expected that using the water fountain should be reserved for class transitions. Again, if a child has medical condition that requires them to have access to the water fountain at any time, please notify the director through e-mail or in writing.

19. At the conclusion of class you will have a responsibility in addition to packing up and storing your instrument properly. This is to maintain our shared space. Your responsibility will be assigned by Ms. Torres.

20. Students should use the appropriate door to enter/exit the band room. The doors are clearly marked ENTER or IN and EXIT or OUT.

Behavior Consequences Responsibility to the group is essential to the RCMMS Band program. An individual's behavior and performance have a major impact on the other members of the Band. Students are expected to exhibit their best behavior at all times. Occasionally, we have visitors in our classes and many people will see our concerts and festival performances. One incident of poor behavior can ruin the public's good impression of our band program and our school. Consequences for behavioral infractions will be handled on an individual basis and are based on a continuum ranging in severity. The consequence(s) will depend on the severity and frequency. Steps in the continuum may be skipped based on severity.

Verbal Warning Pack-up and complete Alternate Assignment or Placement in Alternate Classroom Conference with Student Parent Contact Parent Conference Administrative Teacher Assigned Lunch Detention Teacher Assigned After School Detention Administrative Discipline Referral

Horseplay of any kind in the band room or instrument storage room will not be tolerated. These rooms are filled with instruments and equipment, which can easily be damaged. Most importantly, students can be seriously injured. Any such infraction will result in, at minimum, an immediate telephone call to parents.

AttendanceBand members are expected to be present and prompt for all rehearsals and performance functions. The band’s policy on excused absences parallels that of the school and applies to performances as well as daily class meetings. Absences shall be excused only in the following circumstances:

1. Illness or injury2. Isolation ordered by the NC Board of Health3. Death in the family4. Medical or dental appointment*5. Court appointment*6. Religious observance*7. Other pre-approved educational opportunities*

In order for an absence to be excused, parent documentation is required. For items marked with an asterisk (*), parent documentation must be submitted in advance.

10GradingAn essential and inherent component of the instrumental music curriculum is student performance. Therefore, a substantial portion of the student’s grade in band is determined by participation in performance activities, either individually or with the group. There are

Page 11: Angela Torres, Director - reedycreekmsband.org€¦  · Web viewJazz Band. Marching Band/Pep Band. ... Practice them slowly at first and then increase the speed. ... improvised solo,

other factors in determining a student’s grade as well, and the specific formula used to calculate the grade varies according to the grade level. Below are examples of the various ways a student earns his grade in band. Each grade level is assigned a bin to turn in papers, assignments, practice records, help forms, etc. Students should turn in all papers into the child’s appropriate grade bin. Please don’t put papers on Ms. Torres’s desk or hand papers to Ms. Torres. They will get lost.

Classroom MusicianshipStudents should arrive on time, bring the necessary materials for class, participate actively, and conduct themselves according to all class rules and procedures. A student who cannot play his instrument because it is being repaired or because of an injury must bring a signed note from a parent in order to be excused from playing during class. A cold or headache is not excused. If the student is well enough to attend school, they are expected to play their instrument in band.

Students will also receive a daily materials check grade. Students who are absent during that day will be exempt from the participation/materials check. Students will receive points for EACH for the following: working instrument (50 points), instrument accessories and pencil (20 points), and music/band folder and method book (30 points). The total points for an equipment check are 100 points. If a student is unable to have their instrument for class, a note must be supplied by the parent/guardian.

Another 100 points is for classroom musicianship and involves the student being an active participant in class. This includes, correct conduct, good/positive attitude, following classroom procedures/expectations, etc.

HomeworkOn occasion, students will be given a homework assignment. Typically, this includes returning a paper, writing a journal entry, writing a piece of music, etc. Most of the homework will come from home practice on the student’s individual instrument. The late policy on homework is a school-wide policy. This may be found in the student handbook. Please see the RCMMS late policy.

Home Practice6th , 7th , and 8th graders are required to document their home practice according to guidelines given by the director. Students are expected to practice 20 minutes per day at home. This will be assessed with announced playing tests, pop quizzes or assigned pass offs.

Projects and Written AssignmentsOccasionally there are non-playing activities that serve to reinforce instruction in the areas of performance, music history, or music theory.

Tests, Quizzes and Pass-offsPlaying and written tests are given to assess each student’s comprehension of material covered in class. Playing tests may be done in front of the class or on a recording device, according to the director’s instructions. Students have the opportunity to retake any playing test on their own time before or after school. It is my philosophy, students should try until they are happy with their final performance. Please remember, playing tests must be complete by the end of the Nine Weeks. Playing tests not completed by that point, will turn into a zero.Quizzes will be most often unannounced. They will only be given on material that they have had adequate time to prepare in their required at home practice. Pass-offs will be assigned if needed. They are completed when the student plays the selection without error. They will have opportunity to pass off during class, before school or after school.

11

ConcertsBand is a performing arts elective and attendance at concerts is mandatory. Concert grades are based on performance, appropriate attire and demonstration of proper concert etiquette. Concert dates are listed in the calendar.

Page 12: Angela Torres, Director - reedycreekmsband.org€¦  · Web viewJazz Band. Marching Band/Pep Band. ... Practice them slowly at first and then increase the speed. ... improvised solo,

If a child is unable to participate in a performance, a make-up assignment will be supplied. Please remember, make-up assignments are reserved for students with excused absences. Any conflicts should be notified to the director, ASAP. Conflicts will be dealt with on an individual basis. Non-emergency conflicts given with less than 2 weeks notice will not be excused.

Typically, the make-up assignment is a 3 - 4 page paper, typed, double spaced about a particular subject. The paper will be graded based on content, writing mechanics, etc. The grade on the paper will act as the replacement grade for the performance.

The individual student’s grade will be determined using the following percentage scale:1. Classroom Musicianship (Minor Grades) – 40%2. Home Practice (Homework Grades) – 10%3. Projects, Written Assignments, Tests, Concerts (Major Grades) – 50%

Performance ProbationAny band member may be placed on performance probation as a result of excessive absences, excessive behavior problems, or lack of student preparation on the concert music. A student placed on performance probation will not be allowed to perform until the probation has been lifted by the director. An alternate assignment will be given to replace the missed performance grade.

Concert Etiquette1. Listen attentively. Give your full focus to the music being performed.2. Refrain from talking, tapping, or making other distracting sounds or movements.3. Refrain from chewing, eating, or drinking.4. Remain seated until the performance is over.5. Turn off cell phones or other electronic devices.6. Applaud only when appropriate and only in a way that will encourage the performer(s).7. Be open-minded and receptive to different styles of music.

Travel Policies1. A completed and signed WCPSS field trip permission form is required of each student participating in any

trip taken by the RCMMS Band.2. A full itinerary will be issued to each student prior to any trip. It is the student’s responsibility to share this

information with his parents.3. While on trips, students are to follow all applicable school and band policies.4. Students who are riding with their parents instead of with the full group should submit a signed note to the

director prior to the trip.5. Band members will sit in assigned seats and are expected to cooperate during all roll checks. Students

will load and unload vehicles only upon the director’s instruction.6. Students will be held financially responsible for any damages to bus property.7. All school bus safety rules must be observed while on charter buses as well.8. Students and parents should arrange transportation home from the band room in advance.9. Electronic items such as cell phones, tablets, video games, etc. are considered personal property.

Neither the band director nor the school are responsible for theft, damage, or loss of such items. The band director reserves the right to restrict the use of such items when necessary. These items may be used only with headphones.

Lost and FoundThe band room/percussion room will have a lost and found. Any band related items found in the band room will be placed in the lost and found area. Students should try to get their belongings from the lost and found on the next school day. Any personal item will be turned into the closest school lost and found (usually by the weight room). Any electronic devices or “expenses items” found will be turned into the front office. The lost and found will be cleaned out at the end of every week and most items will be thrown away.

MoneyOn occasion, students will need to hand in money for band expenditures (reeds, valve oil, t-shirt, trip, method book, etc.). DO NOT put money in the grade level bins. It will get lost. Ms. Torres will announce in class when money is to be turned in on the appropriate day. Ms. Torres will allow time, during class, for students to turn in money and receive a receipt

according to WCPSS policy. All students/parents who turn in money will receive a receipt from Ms. Torres.

The appropriate way for students to turn in money is in an envelope marked as such…Student’s NameStudent’s Grade LevelWhat The Money Is For (Band T-shirt Money, for example)The amount enclosed

High School Band InformationMs. Torres will try to provide as much information, as possible, about high school band for 8 th grade band students. Since most of our students will be attending Cary High School, a large majority of the information will be about The Cary High School Band. The RCMMS Band and CHS Band have a strong collaborative relationship; however, parents and students are encouraged to gain information about high school band from its current director, Mr. Matthew Minick and their band website (www.caryband.org). Ms. Torres provides strong informational support up to the first “spring practice” for the Cary High School Band. At that time, parents and students should plan to get information/policies from the Cary High School Band Director.

If your child is planning to attend another school, besides Cary High School, please let me know. I will try to get as much information as possible from their director. Please note, all of our collaborative efforts in performances, meetings, etc. will be with The Cary High School Band since most of our students will be participating in that program.

Power SchoolRCMMS uses Power School for students and parents to check their grades in each academic class, including band. For clarification on the program, students and parents should ask the child’s Home Room Teacher.

Band grades will be updated, at least, once every two weeks. Normally, grades are updated on Fridays of each week.

BYODThis year, RCMMS is a BYOD campus (Bring Your Own Device). Band students are expected to follow the school-wide policies that govern this initiative. Some band lessons will be BYOD. Typically, the students will be notified ahead of time. The band room should be considered a RED ZONE, unless instructed by Ms. Torres on specific days.

Final Director’s Statement

On occasion, school policies, band policies, school board policies will change. Any changes necessary will be decided by the director. Please know the director is able to change any policy to better fit the band program at RCMMS. All changes will be notified to parents and students ASAP. Thank you for your cooperation, as we necessarily adjust for the best of the students in the RCMMS Band Program.
