separated from Hyderabad by the HussainSagar Lake. Hyderabad is known for itsunique culture- the aromatic biryani, thelilting tongue called Dakkani or Hyderabadi,the rich legacy of the Nizams and the stunning Charminar. The region isalso famous for its diamond mines thatproduced some of the world’s most covetedrocks- the Kohinoor, the Regent Diamond,the Hope and the Orloff. In the last twodecades, Hyderabad-Secunderabad has grown into a hub of informationtechnology, and is sometimes given thesobriquet ‘Cyberabad’.

The city is also home to the Telugu filmindustry (predictably called Tollywood), thethird largest in the country. Hyderabadis areproud of their city, of the colourful storiesbehind its splendid palaces, of the Nizamswith their many wives and as manyeccentricities. They love to sip Irani chai atsmall joints in the shops around Charminar.They love the larger-than-life Tollywoodstars, who exhort them to buy cola from gigantic hoardings, and who routinelystep out of sprawling mansions in theupmarket Jubilee Hills or Banjara Hills to addhistrionics to the political scene. Also, thecity has developed to become a hub for theIT sector along with the pharmaceutical andBPO processes making it a busy commercialcity. The wide range of precious and semi-precious stones and pearls and intricate artand handicraft make Hyderabad one of themost sought after destinations among the

tourists. To top it all, it is the home to one ofthe very popular attractions in the country,Charminar.

Hyderabad is one city that still holds itsbeautiful old world charm along with themodern day elegance. Remember thesensuous ‘Ooh La La’ song from ‘The DirtyPicture”; it was shot in the Ramoji Film Cityof Hyderabad. ‘Hero Hiralal’, starringNaseeruddin Shah and Sanjana Kapoor hada few scenes shot at the Golconda Fort,Hussain Sagar, and the iconic Charminar.Some other popular movies that were shotin Hyderabad are Bobby Jasoos, Wanted,Daawat-E-Ishq, and Bewafaa.

Vacation in Hyderabad is always a one-of-a-kind experience but this is doubled up if youhappen to visit during any of the festivalsand events. Festivals like the DeccanFestival, International Kite Festival, LumbiniFestival and Ugadi Festival. On top of allthese festivals and events unique to the state, festivals like Holi, Deepavali, Id-Ul-Fitr, Christmas are also celebrated withequal gusto and pomp. 3 Tirupati

Tirupati (Thirupathi) boasts of being thelocation of one of the most affluent templesof India, the Venkateswara Swamy Templededicated to Lord Venkateshwara. Locatedon Tirumala Hills seventh peak,Venkatachala, this magnificent temple ofLord Venkateshwara or 'the Lord of TheSeven Hills' is sheltered. This temple is amajor pilgrimage site of India. ForVaishnavites, there is no place in theuniverse equal to Tirumala in Tirupati(Thirupathi), the place Lord Vishnu chose asan alternative to Vaikuntha, his heavenlyhome. According to a Puranic legend, anangry Lakshmi once left Vishnu. Unable tofind her, the grief-struck lord withdrew to ananthill in this hill. He later married herincarnation but 'Lakshmi' having left him,had no money for the wedding and had toborrow from Kuber. Devotees makingofferings at Tirumala in this holy city ofTirupati believe they are helping the lordrepay it. This holy city of Tirupati is home tomany other temples and monuments witharchitectural brilliance that attracts touristsfrom in and around. Other temples inTirupati (Thirupathi) such as VarahaswamiTemple located on the banks of SwamiPushkarni and Anjaneyaswami temple,which is a majestic temple built by theMahant dynasty are also a must visit. Otherthan the temples, the beautiful city ofTirupati has much more to offer. Do visit thefamous Sri Venkateswara National Park,which is a biosphere reserve and a nationalpark.

All the major hindu festivals like Ugadi,Sankranti, Ganesh Chaturthi, Deepawali andKartik Purnima are celebrated with greatsplendour in this holy city of Tirupati. Ifvisiting this city during the months ofSeptember and October, do not forget totake part in the nine day festival - SriVenkateswara Brahmotsavams, which iscelebrated every year. Those with a sweettooth must try the mouth-watering TirupatiLaddu, which is the speciality of this region.

4 Nellore

Known as "Vikrama Simhapuri" till the 13thcentury and later renamed as Nellore, todaythe city has a prominent position in AndhraPradesh. This city, located on the banks ofPenna River, is known for its agriculturalprosperity. Recently it has also developedwith regard to its educational institutionsand trade and commerce. The place is hometo the famous Ranganatha Temple thatdraws devotees from far and wide intoNellore.

5 Rajahmundry

The cultural Capital of Andhra Pradesh,Rajahmundry is the birthplace of poetNannayya, the first poet of Telugu.
