Beirut & Baalbek, LebanonSaturday, Sunday & Monday, April 16, 17 & 18. Fly by private jet to Beirut, and explore this cosmopolitan city, once known as the “Paris of the Middle East.” Visit the National Museum, which houses one of the world’s best collections of Phoenician art. Walk along the Corniche, the city’s seaside promenade, and view Pigeon Rocks, huge formations which stand like sentinels off the Mediterranean coast. Discover the historic city center, meticulously reconstructed after it was mostly destroyed during the civil war of the 1970s. The next day, venture outside the city to Lebanese Tripoli, built on a rocky promontory on the Mediterranean. Visit the Citadel of Raymond de Saint-Gilles, a massive Crusader fortress built in 1101, and meander through the narrow alleyways of the old city, passing colorful mosques, hammams, and souks, where jewelers, tailors, and coppersmiths continue to work as they have done for centuries. Explore the ancient city of Byblos, believed to have been inhabited for over 7,000 years. It was the scribes of Byblos who developed an alphabetic phonetic script, the precursor of our modern alphabet. Visit the castle and church built by the Crusaders, the Egyptian temples, the Phoenician Royal Necropolis, and the Roman Amphitheater.

On Monday, enjoy a scenic drive through the Bekaa Valley, a pastoral landscape of wheat fields and vineyards, to Baalbek, counted among the best preserved wonders of the ancient world. Built on an extravagant scale that outshone anything in Rome, the town was a center of pilgrimage well into the Christian era. Explore the temples of Jupiter, Venus, and Mercury, and view the remarkable Great Court and the Hexagonal Forecourt. Continue to Chateau Ksara, a Jesuit vineyard and Lebanon’s oldest winery. Taste its dry red wine, and explore its fascinating natural cellar, the Ksara Caves, where thousands of prized vintages are stored and allowed to age gracefully. Four Seasons Hotel, Beirut

We arrive in the early morning to see this spectacular site at sunrise. Wander through the Temple of Bel, Triumphal Arch, Great Colonnade, and amphitheater, and view ancient friezes and mosaics up close in the Palmyra Museum.
