Formation of the placenta
Branches of the stem villi are continuously showered with welloxygenated maternal blood that circulate through the intervillous space. The free (terminal) villi form the placental membrane barrier separating the fetal and maternal circulation that form the main exchange barrier of material between mother and fetus.
