Come, My Celia - Benjamin Jonson

Come, my Celia, let us proveWhile we may the sports of love;

Time will not be ours forever,He at length our good will sever.

Spend not then his gifts in vain;Suns that set may rise again,But if once we lose this light,'Tis with us perpetual night.

Why should we defer our joys?Fame and rumour are but toys.

Cannot we delude the eyesOf a few poor household spies?

Or his easier ears beguile,So removed by our wile?

'Tis no sin love's fruits to steal; But the sweet theft to reveal,

To be taken, to be seen,These have crimes accounted been.

A. Sense of word

The prove of sport love and benefitted time to enjoy their togetherness.

B. Paraphrase

Lets play celia

We have to play love togetherness

Time is limited for our love

Time provides the opportunity for us

Don’t spend the time with no action

Then sun will set and rise next day

If we leave this light time

There is no light just night across us

Why should be cancel this love moment?

Popularity and rumour are something doesn’t matter

we can deceive the truth

And lie by whisperring

There is no sin, where loves fruit to steal

And the falsehood must be revealed, taken, seen and noted

Stanza 1

Page 2: analysis and interpretation of poetry "Come, My Celia - Benjamin Jonson"

The speaker play a love with his girlfriend to prove their play love in their limited time. So

the speaker want to spend the time with his girlfriend.

Stanza 2

The speaker feel that time is limited. The speaker think that if chances not to benefitted it

wasted away. The speaker is afraid if the sun will set and rise next day, the speaker can’t

enjoy like the same day yesterday.

Stanza 3

The speaker think that should they cancel this love moment? There are popularity and

gossip is a little annoyance. They need to deceive the annoyance and lie then they play

of love.

Stanza 4

The speaker think that there is no sin for their love. Because fruit to steal. And the

falsehood must be revealed, taken, seen and noted.

C. Interpretation

1. sport of love (stanza 1 line 2) is a playing love. The speaker think Time will not be ours

forever, the speaker wants Celia to prove the game of love. The speaker and Celia agree

that their time is limited. They are united by time.

2. Good will server (line 4, stanza 1) good will sever is chance to play sport love. from the

poem if we fasten upon this phrase with the sentence previously above, it means that the

best opportunity which come in into the speaker’s time to play sport love with his

girlfriend.

3. His light (line 3, stanza 2) it describes time which come at the time when they may

sports of love. And the time when they play sport of love.

4. Fame and Rumour are but toys (line 2, stanza 3) “Fame and Rumour” as their

worked , because may be they work as a familiar public figure. So the speaker thinks that

fame and rumour as a little annoyance when they play love.

5. Household spies (line 4, stanza 3) looking from the previous “Fame and rumour are but

toys.Cannot we delude the eyes Of a few poor household spies?”, i interpret that the

speaker seen famous people. And this is a rumour about people who disagree and agree

by their love. And from this it consider with previous line thet with fame and rumour they

can play sport of love.

6. Love is fruit to steal (line 1, stanza 4) from this poem, I interpret this as that love is an

obligation which have to be possessed of the speaker and his girlfriend Celia, although it

is got by stealing. And it has high sensation in play of love by stealing.

7. To be taken, to be seen, These have crimes accounted been (stanza 4 Line 3,4) its

literate with previous lines that love by stealing should be told to other people not hide in

rumour and fame.
