Analysis two - the opening sequence of a Horror   Scream 1996 Chosen film: Scream 1996 Scream is a 1996 American horror film,  Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Drew Barrymore, and David Arquette. The film was released on December 20, 1996; leading a story of the character,  Sidney Prescott (Campbell), a high school student in the fictional town of Woodsboro, who becomes the target of a mysterious killer known as Ghostface. Location/setting: The film begins with high school student Casey Becker , who receives a flirtatious phone call from an unknown person, asking her "What's your favourite scary movie?" The situation manages to escalate out of control as the caller transforms in to an atrocious character, changing personas threatening her life. He then discloses that her boyfriend  Steve is being held hostage. After not managing to answer a question correctly about horror films, Steve is murdered. When Casey refuses to cooperate with the caller, she is attacked and murdered by a masked killer, and her body is hanged from a tree. The location set portraying the beginning of the sequence is involved to specifically show the audience that the main actress is alone in the house, leaving unanswered questions for the audience, such as ‘what will happen next?’ Codes and conventions representing the Horror genre: Similar to the analysis of ‘The Ring’, codes and conventions are presented to represent this film as a horror specifically. This horror also leaves the audience questioning ‘who is that on the phone?’ ‘how do they know her?’. In addition, when watching a horror we expect to receive action that pops up unexpectedly on the screen involving blood and people at home are able to relate to this especially as there are glass windows in the house. The themes presented within this film are tension, conflict, blood etc alongside trying to create a verisimilitude, believable world being produced for the audience to relate to. The scene is introduced with an establishing shot as well as slow paste panning. This is shown to illustrate that many supernatural occurrences will take place i n the house later that night as well as showing the house to be more scary and suspicious. Whilst showing this shot, there is a swing which is moving in the middle of the set, which can show that someone has just been there or there is a person watching the protagonist in this case, leading to the phone call.
