An Unforgettable Kiwi Experience
by Derek Lee of 4T
The 2-week study tour in Auckland, New Zealand last August was a trip I will never
to forget. We had a great time. I’m glad I joined this trip organized by our school.
Apart from attending English lessons and different kinds of lessons with our buddies,
we had wonderful excursions. We went to a shopping mall in Botany Town Centre,
the Auckland Zoo, the Auckland Museum, Rotorua and Murawai beach.
On the first week, most of the time, we had English lessons in a local Kiwi school and
even got a chance to join in the mainstream lessons. During the weekend, we went to
Rotorua, which is a city located in the southern part of North Island. On the second
week, we had more outings and we went to a museum, a zoo, and a honey centre.
The Rotorua trip was the most unforgettable. I could play different kinds of games
and visit many beautiful tourist spots. I enjoyed the luge, which is like a cart on which
you sit and slide down the mountain. It was very
exciting. Also, the view of Rainbow Spring was
really nice, the water was so clear and the air
was fresh. The visit to the Redwood Forest was
awesome. I have never seen such tall trees in my
life! Apart from these, I enjoyed the Maori
concert very much. In that concert, I learnt more
about the history and culture of the Maoris.
I think this trip is an excellent experience for us because we can improve our spoken
English, and most important for me is we get to experience the culture and the
lifestyle of the Kiwis in New Zealand. Firstly, through this programme, our spoken
English should improve, as English was used as our everyday language. Also, we had
many English lessons throughout this programme and we learnt a lot of new
vocabulary. Secondly, my horizons were broadened as I experienced the culture and
lifestyle there. In New Zealand, the cadence is very relaxing, but in Hong Kong, you
can have a relaxing cadence only when you
are retired. Also, the environment is nice, the
air is fresh, and the houses are spacious.
New Zealand is a wonderful place if you
want to have a laid back lifestyle, compared
to Hong Kong, and it is definitely one of the
best places to enjoy nature’s beauty and
improve your English.
