COURSE DESCRIPTIONAn Overview of Perioperative Medicine 2012 has been a very successful collaboration of Mayo Clinic and Jefferson Medical College. This merger of two of the nation’s most comprehensive perioperative courses features a collaborative faculty of multi-specialty experts in perioperative medicine from both Mayo Clinic and Jefferson Medical College.
This course is intended to update general internists, internist-sub specialists, family medicine anesthesiologists, surgeons, and other health care providers on perioperative assessment and management. This course will focus on the practical, clinical side of preoperative assessment and postoperative management.
COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVESUpon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:• Apply a systematic approach to guide
preoperative assessment.• Recommend appropriate perioperative
cardiac testing using the current ACC / AHA guidelines and risk calculators.
• Manage anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents in the perioperative setting.
• Discuss the management of the new oral anticoagulants in the perioperative setting.
• Assess risk factors for postoperative pulmonary complications and recommend measures most effective in reducing perioperative pulmonary risk.
• Select appropriate prophylactic regimens for deep venous thrombosis in the perioperative setting based on patient risk and current guidelines.
• Recommend the appropriate continuation and discontinuation of medications and nutraceuticals in the perioperative setting.
• Assess the patient with chronic liver disease for surgery.
• Manage chronic kidney disease in the perioperative setting.
• Recognize and manage postoperative delirium.
• Identify risks and benefits of perioperative blood transfusion.

DATE AND LOCATIONAn Overview of Perioperative Medicine 2012 will be held October 24-27, 2012 at the Swissotel Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. Course headquarters will be located in the Grand Ballroom. Registration will begin on Wednesday, October 24 at 6:00 a.m.
CREDIT College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, designates this live activity for a maximum of 23 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
AAFPApplication for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending.
Other Health Care ProfessionalsA record of attendance will be provided to other health care professionals for requesting credits in accordance with state nursing boards, specialty societies, or other professional associations.

The registration fee includes tuition, an electronic version of the course syllabus, continental breakfasts, and break refreshments. Although it is not Mayo School of CPD policy to limit the number of registrants for a course, conference room facilities may necessitate closing of enrollment; therefore, early registration is advised. An email confirmation will be sent upon receipt of payment and completed registration form. Please present the confirmation letter when checking in at the meeting registration desk.
CANCELLATION POLICYIf you cancel your participation in this course, your registration fee, less a $75 administrative fee, will be refunded when written notification is received by Mayo School of CPD before October 10, 2012 (fax#: 507-284-0532). No refunds will be made after October 10, 2012.
Mayo School of CPD reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course due to unforeseen circumstances. In the unlikely event Mayo School of CPD must cancel or postpone this course, Mayo School of CPD will refund the registration fee, but is not responsible for any related costs, charges, or expenses to participants, including fees assessed by airline/travel/lodging agencies.
LODGING ACCOMMODATIONSGuest rooms have been reserved for attendees and their guests with special course rates at the Swissotel. In order to receive the special rate, reservations must be made before the room block is filled or before October 1, 2012, whichever comes first.
Reservations will be taken following this date based on space and rate availability. Hotel reservations for the event can be made by individual attendees directly at 888-73-SWISS. Please identify yourself as a participant of Mayo Clinic’s An Overview of Perioperative Medicine course when making your reservation.
