Dear Colleagues,
As the Stephen Jarislowsky Chair in the Cultural and Economic Transformation at Memorial University
of Newfoundland, it is my great pleasure to invite you to attend Two Keynote Speeches on Productivity,
Innovation & Entrepreneurship – the Role of Immigration and Workforce Diversity to be held at
Memorial University on November 25, 2019.
The event provides an opportunity to share knowledge on existing work done in this field, explore
and better understand immigrants’ productivity, innovation and entrepreneurship capabilities and
identify ways to facilitate the continuous development and utilization of immigrants’ talent to
enhance their positive contribution to the economy in NL and Canada as a whole. The event will
also provide a great opportunity to network with experienced researchers and practitioners in this
field.
Two Keynote Speeches will be presented by Dr. Jennifer Hunt and Dr. Arthur Sweetman.
Dr. Jennifer Hunt is the James Cullen Chair in Economics and Professor of Economics at Rutgers
University. From 2013-2015, she served as the first Chief Economist of the U.S. Department of
Labor under the Obama Administration, then as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Microeconomic
Analysis at the U.S. Department of the Treasury. She is an associate editor of the Journal of Labour
Economics and also a co-editor of the Journal of Human Resources.
Dr. Arthur Sweetman is the Ontario Research Chair in Health Human Resources and a Professor
in the Economics Department at McMaster University. His recent research involves various
economic issues regarding immigration, education, unemployment insurance, unions, and other
