DGT ?? TM ??

Acquis Communitaire The Acquis Communautaire is the entire body of European

legislation, including all the treaties, regulations and directives adopted by the European Union (EU) and the rulings of the European Court of Justice …. Since each new country joining the EU is required to accept the whole Acquis Communautaire, this body of legislation is translated into 22 official languages. As a result, the Acquis now exists as parallel texts in the following 22 languages: Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, German, Greek, Finnish, French, Hungarian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovene, Spanish and Swedish. For the 23rd official EU language, Irish, the Acquis is not translated on a regular basis.

Many translation memory programs use their own Translation Memory file formats

TMX – Translation Memory eXchange Developed in 1998. Current version 1.4b Open (XML) Standard for the exchange of

translation memory data. Developed by LISA - Localization Industry

Standards Association (declared insolvent on 28 February 2011). Who looks after this????

Similar standards exist e.g. TBX for Terminology

SDL Trados Studio 2009 We need something to import into. We make a TM (.sdltm file). We import the .tmx file into it.

Wordfast Classic – We choose Open Translation Memory and

select the .tmx file Wordfast opens it and changes it into a .txt

file i.e. a Wordfast TM directly. (Merging)

Page 15: An introduction to: Translation Memory Software Wordfast Classic 6

Select Home View, Click on New Translation Memory. Give a name Use Location to choose Folder Choose the language pair you want. Click Finish

Page 16: An introduction to: Translation Memory Software Wordfast Classic 6

Make sure this empty Translation Memory is selected in Translation Memory View (if you have several TMs open)

Click on File – then Import Click on Add Files Go to the folder where the .tmx file is

located and open it Click on Next, Next, accept defaults and then Finish Trados Studio will process away….

Page 17: An introduction to: Translation Memory Software Wordfast Classic 6

LANGUAGE + CONTENT (+ CREATIVITY IN SEARCHING)= WOR(L)DS IN ACTION

DATA + ANALYSIS = INFORMATION

Page 26: An introduction to: Translation Memory Software Wordfast Classic 6

Translators are used to looking for glossaries TM tool translators also used to the concept

of aligning… But…. We are increasingly going to use more and

more sources of DATA Including TMs supplied by …??? TAUS?? Corpora e.g. www.linguee.com down the line. MT via the TM tool

Page 27: An introduction to: Translation Memory Software Wordfast Classic 6

We will start with our own translation experience – our intuition and our personal TM production.

We will increasingly use other trusted data e.g. external TMs.

We will use MT as a help just as we use other sources of help.

We will use other tools and websites. Interesting if the TM programs will stay ahead

or are rendered redundant by “cloud” data.
