The Transition Year Programme was introduced in 1973 and is now running in 75% of all post-primary schools. This means that:
vApproximately half of all students sitting the Leaving Certificate have participated in a Transition Year Programme.
v These students have spent six years in second level education.
v Transition year is a one year programme between Junior and Senior Cycle.
v It is designed to act as a bridge between the two, facilitating the smooth transition from
the more dependent learning of Junior Cert. to the more independent, self-directed learning required for Senior Cycle.
v 2001 ESRI Report showed that students that did TY achieved on average 45 extra points in the LC.
vRepeat students only gain by an average of 5 points.
