LINCOLN CENTER FESTIVAL 2017 AN EVENING WITH CARLINHOS BROWN

About Carlinhos Brown

Born in the Candeal neighborhood inSalvador, Bahia, Antonio Carlos Santos deFreitas—who changed his name as ateenager to Carlinhos Brown—is synony-mous with the Bahian sound, a mix of Afro-Brazilian percussion with a touch of reggae.Brown is a singer, musician, producer, com-poser, arranger, cultural agitator, and a coachon the popular Brazilian TV shows The VoiceBrasil and The Voice Brasil Kids. Brown pre-viously appeared at Lincoln Center Festival, along with his groups Timbalada andLactomia, as part of the multi-evening seriesBrazil: Beyond Bossa in 2003.

Although his first drums were empty waterbottles, Brown soon launched an interna-tional career that has spanned decades.During the 1980s, he toured with CaetanoVeloso as a percussionist. It was on Veloso’s1989 album Estrangeiro that Brown had hisfirst hit, “Meia-Lua Inteira.”

At the end of the 1980s, Brown broughttogether dozens of percussionists to formthe still-popular group Timbalada. In 2002 hecollaborated with Marisa Monte and ArnaldoAntunes on the album Tribalistas. He has writ-ten number one hits for himself and majorBrazilian artists: Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa,Marisa Monte, Nando Reis, Cassia Eller,Herbert Vianna, and even the heavy metalband Sepultura have recorded his songs.

Brown’s first solo album Alfagamabetizado(1996) was followed by Omelete Man(1999), Bahia do Mundo, Mito e Verdade(2001), and Carlinhos Brown é CarlitoMarrón (2003), which won the 2004 LatinGrammy Award for Best Portuguese Lan -guage Contemporary Pop Album. Othersolo releases include Candyall Beat (2004),A Gente Ainda Não Sonhou (2007), Can -dombless (2006), Adobró and Diminuto(2010), Mixturada Brasileira (2012), Marabô

and Vibraaasil Beats Celebration (2014),Sarau du Brown—Ritual Beat System (2015),and Artefireaccua–Incinerando Inferno (2016).

Brown’s songs have also reached the bigscreen. In 2011 he was nominated for anAcademy Award for Best Original Song for“Real in Rio,” co-written with Sergio Mendesfor Carlos Saldanha’s hit animation featureRio. The sequel Rio 2 (2014) included moreBrown compositions. Other films with hismusic include Navalha na Carne (1997),Dance with Me (1998), Xuxa e os Duendes(2001), O Casamento de Louise (2002),Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey (2002), Dona Flore Seus Dois Maridos (2003), O Casamentode Romeu e Julieta (2005), Cidade Baixa(2005), Ó Paí, Ó (2007), Fast Five (2011),and Capitães de Areia (2011).

Brown’s music has a close relationship withhis social activism. His musical groups, beginning with Timbalada, have aimed toprovide education for youth in need, espe-cially in the Candeal neighborhood wherehe planned the urbanization project “TáRebocado,” for which he was honored bythe United Nations. Spanish film directorFernando Trueba’s 2004 documentary ElMilagro de Candeal explores how Brownsuccessfully uses music as a communitydevelopment tool in his hometown.

Along with his music and activism, CarlinhosBrown also expresses himself through thevisual arts. The first official exhibition of hispaintings was Olhar Que Ouve (Eyes ThatListen), presented in 2013 at the CaixaCultural Brasília and the Palácio do Planalto(Brazilian Government’s Official Office).
