The Amrita Center for International Programs (ACIP) is the central point for international academic relations at Amrita University. It is responsible for the coordination and administration of international educational and research activities and initiatives for the University. The Center focuses on enhancing education and research by bringing together students, teachers, and academicians from around the world to create an opportunity for the rich and diverse exchange of knowledge and ideas. ACIP has established and continues to establish strong collaborative initiatives with many institutions around the globe and facilitates extensive faculty and student exchanges as well as cross-continental research projects. Furthermore, the Center frequently engages international experts from these institutions via online lectures and short courses. So far, Amrita has welcomed over 500 international distinguished guest lecturers and adjunct faculty.

The Amrita Center for Interna-tional Programs (ACIP) is the central point for international academic rela-tions at Amrita University. The Center focuses on enhancing education and research by bringing together stu-dents, teachers, and academicians from around the world to create an opportunity for the rich and diverse exchange of knowledge and ideas.

ACIP has established and contin-ues to establish strong collaborative initiatives with many institutions in the U.S., Europe, Australia, and Japan,

many of which have been classified as world-leading. The Center frequently engages international experts from these institutions via online lectures and short courses.

Currently, ACIP offers sev-eral exchange programs, semes-ter study abroad opportunities, and dual degree programs for students with excellent academic credentials. There are also twinning programs in the fields of engineering and busi-ness with universities in the U.S. and Europe. In addition, ACIP encourages

and coordinates joint co-guiding of PhD students and joint research pro-jects with universities around the world.

Under the leadership of our Chancellor, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, we at ACIP forge alliances that better enable us to embrace both scientific knowledge and spiritual wisdom, for both are required to meet the current challenges of our global society. Amrita is one of India’s premiere teaching and research institutions and has been ranked in the “Ivy League” of Indian Universities by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It is accredited with the highest grade of ‘A’ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and is increasingly being recognized internationally as an institute of repute. Founded by the world renowned humanitarian, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, the multi-campus University was established to provide rigorous academic instruction in an ambience rooted in India’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

Amrita has 15 schools across 5 campuses and offers 150+ degree programs, in a variety of disciplines, such as Engineering, Business, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Ayurveda (ancient

Indian study of medicine), Biotechnology, Arts and Sciences, Education, Communication/Journalism, and Social Work, at the UG, PG, and Doctoral levels. Amrita has approximately 18,000 students and 1,750 faculty members, 600 of which are PhD/DM holders. The University also has a staff to student ratio of 1:10, one of the best in the country, especially among private universities.

The University puts a great deal of emphasis on research and the development of innovative technology, specializing in areas such as Haptics, Cyber Security, Nanotechnology and Energy, Health Sciences, Molecular and Nano-Medicine, Biotechnology and Life Sciences, Wireless Networks and Applications, Computer Science and Engineering, and Learning Technologies.

RESEARCHCENTERS

Amrita University is committed to conducting meaningful research that focuses on the upliftment of humanity. The University also has strong collaborations with several international institutions and organizations that have led to globally recognized achievements in research. Currently, Amrita conducts research in the following fields: Wireless Networks and Applications, Computer Science and Engineering, Biotechnology and Life Sciences, Molecular and Nano-Medicine, Energy and Nanotechnology, Learning Technologies, and Health Sciences.

Amrita Center for Wireless Networks and Applications (Amrita WNA)

The Center focuses on the emerging fields of Wireless Networks, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), Wireless Communication, 3G, 4G, and LTE Technologies. Current specialization areas include Disaster Management, Energy Solutions, Healthcare, Environmental Monitoring, and Education. Amrita WNA successful completed the Indo–European WINSOC Project and is recognized worldwide for its deployment of the first ever wireless network system for predicting landslides. The Government of India will deploy the system in all landslide prone areas in the near future.

Amrita Center for Computational Engineering and Networking (Amrita CEN)

The Center focuses on research in the areas of Software Defined Radio (SDR), Computational Drug Designing, and Wavelet Theory. CEN is also involved in the areas of Computational Linguistics, Natural Language Processing, and Speech Translation. A massive transla-tion project is currently underway to develop tools to translate web content from English to Indian languages. Funded by the Ministry of IT and conducted in conjunc-tion with Leiden University (Netherlands), the initiative will enable every child in India to access information in his or her own mother tongue.

Amrita - Agilent Analytical Research Center

The School of Biotechnology has joined hands with Agilent Technologies (Germany) to set up an analytical research lab with the vision to promote and encourage the development of science education and scientific research in India. The Center is currently home to the latest state-of-the-art detection systems such as uHPLC chromatographic separation, UVVIS (Ultraviolet to Visible Spectroscopy), ELSD (Evaporation Light Scattering), LC/MS (Mass Spectrometry), and ESI (Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry). In addition, the Center also has an ultra-fast, online-UVVIS spectrometer. The Center provides its

instrumentation capabilities and expertise to in-house researchers to solve diverse research problems such as the identification and characterization of natural prod-ucts, metabolic intermediates, and proteome analysis related to various disease indications.

Amrita Multi Modal Applications Using Computer Human Interaction (AMMACHI Labs)

The Center focuses on technological innovation in the field of computer-human interaction in order to develop applications designed to improve the qual-ity of life for socially and economically marginalized people and communities. Combining multimedia, vir-tual reality, and the emerging technology of haptics, AMMACHI Labs focuses on providing effective and life-changing vocational training and value based edu-cation. The main projects of AMMACHI Labs include:

• SAVE: Vocational education and skill development.

• Empowering Women: Vocational and life enrichment education including micro-financing.

• MoVE: Education for rural and semi-urban populations via mobile classrooms.

• Disaster Risk Reduction: Disaster management, emer . -gency response, and rehabilitation training.

Amrita Center for Cyber Security Systems and Networks (ACSSN)

The mission of the Center is to promote a part-nership between industry, academia, and the govern-ment to foster innovative research and education in the area of Cyber Security. Key research areas include: Network Security, Cloud Computing, Cryptography, Wireless Security, Intrusion Detection via Early Warning Frameworks, and Internet of Things (IoT). Currently, ACSSN works closely with several government depart-ments, research organizations and multi-national firms on collaborative research and technology development.

Amrita Center for Biomedical Engineering Research (AMBE)

AMBE is committed to design and develop low cost, reliable biomedical devices and implants. The Center was the first in India to develop an efficient, but highly cost effective, insulin pump that matches and/or surpasses its current international counterparts. The pump was developed for the precise, personalized, and continuous delivery of insulin, inconspicuously, for the control and management of diabetes. The design of the Amrita Automated Insulin Pump was recently awarded a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Amrita Center for Nanoscience (ACNS)

India’s first NanobioCenter, ACNS, is recognized as a leader in in the areas of Nanotechnology and Solar Cell research. The Center is also home to the Nano Solar Center of Excellence, which focuses on developing new nano-materials for applications in cancer, diagnostics and therapy, new delivery systems, sensors, and photovolta-ics. ACNS is also a pioneer in the development of natural tissue and organs without the use of synthetic implants or donors. The Center has received support from the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum and will soon establish an International Center for Electrochemical Nanoprocessing. The Center will be set-up in collabora-tion with the University of California, Riverside and the State University of New York at Binghamton.

Amrita Wind Energy Center (AWEC)

AWEC is the first of its kind in India and was brought to fruition via a memorandum of understand-ing between Amrita University, Center for Wind Energy Technology and the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA). A Wind Power Laboratory is cur-rently being developed with the help of IWTMA and will include facilities such as small turbine testing, wind elec-tric generator schemes, wind speed and weather moni-toring recording systems, software for wind resource

assessment, and wind power analysis on electric power grids. Currently, research is being conducted in the area of Energy Management on Smart Grids using Embedded Systems, in collaboration with KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden).

Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Center (AIMS)

AIMS is dedicated to establishing a center of excel-lence in healthcare by engaging in preventive medi-cine, medical education, and research in the areas of Health Science, Molecular, and Nano-Medicine. The super-speciality hospital, with an adjacent medical col-lege, continues to provide outstanding and affordable - in many cases free - medical care, regardless of one’s social or economic background. This medical science and research center harbours many high quality facili-ties including a patented, fully computerized, and net-worked Hospital Information System (HIS), a fully digital radiology department, a NABL accredited clinical labo-ratory, and a 24/7 telemedicine network set up by the Amrita Center for Digital Health; a network that enables patients in remote areas to receive medical care instan-taneously from specialists at AIMS and other hospitals. AIMS is known for offering comprehensive healthcare solutions comparable to the best hospitals in the world.

Amrita Virtual Interactive E-Learning World (A-VIEW)

An initiative of the Amrita E-Learning Research Lab, A-VIEW aims to empower individuals via digital oppor-tunities for distance education and social collaboration. It is an internet based, virtual, knowledge - sharing plat-form that uses various communication modules such as audio/video, whiteboard collaboration, document shar-ing, and text chat to enable teachers to collaborate with students from different locations across countries and institutions. A-VIEW has advanced modules that allow the in-depth sharing of information and content that can either be displayed on a single screen or on multiple screens, simultaneously. More than 2,000 universities in India are currently using A-VIEW free of cost.

Virtual Amrita Laboratories Universalizing Education (VALUE)

The VALUE Initiative is a project dedicated to devel-oping virtual labs in the fields of Science and Engineering. These media-rich, online learning tools allow users to conduct physical laboratory experiments in a computer-simulated environment. The aim of VALUE is to pro-vide free and easy access to high quality educational resources to students across India, regardless if they are studying in rural areas or come from economically chal-lenged backgrounds. In addition to conducting actual experiments, the virtual labs include features such as illustrated theory notes, animations, modelling, interac-tive quizzes, workbooks, and video lectures.

Amrita Center for Research in Advanced Technologies for Education (Amrita CREATE)

CREATE applies innovative digital solutions to pro-vide accessible and affordable educational technologies for the benefit of society. It has built a simulation lab for STEM skills (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to foster educational experiences using 2D and 3D simulations. CREATE pioneered the devel-opment and deployment of an Intelligent Tutoring and Adaptive Assessment program in over 45 Indian schools in rural and small city neighbourhoods. Research is currently being conducted on Innovative Pedagogy, Architectural Frameworks, and Modelling Approaches for the Diffusion of Personalized Learning.

Amrita Technology and Business Incubator (Amrita TBI)

Amrita TBI is a joint venture between Amrita University and the National Science and Technology Development Board, Government of India. The Center is one of only 40 TBIs in India that focuses on encourag-ing entrepreneurial activities among students in an aca-demic setting. Amrita TBI fosters and helps incubatees

work on intellectually stimulating and socially responsi-ble projects which will generate an effective and posi-tive impact in society. One new initiative of Amrita TBI is the Amrita TIDE Innovation Awards offered to stu-dents who pioneer bright ideas. The program provides mentorship and resources towards building prototypes and services to market these products. Amrita TBI also provides start-up funding through partners such as the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), the Technology Development Board (DST), and the Technology Incubation and Development of Entrepreneurs, Government of India.

Amrita Sustainability Initiative (Amrita and Deakin University, Australia)

The Sustainability Initiative is set up between the Amrita School of Business and the Center for Sustainable and Responsible Organizations (CSARO) in DeakinUnivesity (Australia), to conduct management research in India with a focus on Corporate and Social Responsibility. Key research areas include setting up a database of the top 500 sustainable businesses in India in order to better understand and promote long-term responsible organizational behaviour; develop-ing research collaborations with eligible international partners from the government, industry, and the com-munity; encouraging research by MBA students by providing funding for CSR related projects; and organ-izing conferences and seminars to promote sustainable practices.

TECHNOLOGY FOR HUMANITY TECH TRANSFER & PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

AMRITA PULSE

This low-cost, low-power, wearable device provides real-time mon-itoring of a patient’s ECG without the need to visit a hospital. It also sends crisis alerts to a patient’s doctor, via mobile phones, enabling emergency medical service response teams to act quickly.

FLEXIBLE POLYMER WAFER

This flexible drug loaded wafer can be placed directly in the tumor bed after the tumor has been removed, thereby preventing its recurrence and killing any residual tumor tissue that may have remained after surgery.

AMRITA PERSONAL SAFETY DEVICE

This device is especially designed for women, children, and the dif-ferently abled to help them connect to and alert authorities and their loved ones. APSD has the ability to record conversations and can immediately communicate messages to multiple destinations.

HEART TISSUE PATCH

This patch assimilates with the normal heart tissue around the scar eventually healing the dead tissue. Furthermore, the patch placed on the tissue synchronizes with and simulates the patient’s heartbeat.

NANO MEDICINE TO FIGHT DRUG-RESISTANT LEUKEMIA

This recently discovered medicine dramatically improves the treat-ment of drug-resistant CML as it is designed to be directly absorbed into the cancer cells circulating in the patient’s bloodstream.

This tablet aims to assist those living in rural areas to achieve 100% literacy and to decrease dropout rates in schools.

AMRITA PORTABLE SUPER CHARGER

By harnessing the power of solar energy, this portable innovation has the ability to charge any device within a short amount of time. It runs on a low-cost solar panel and does not require any external batteries.

MULTIMEDIA BASED THEFT MONITORING SYSTEM

This downloadable app allows one to send live audio and video streams of the incident, send SMS alerts to family and friends, and send details of where the theft is taking place via google maps.

GESTURE-BASED WHEELCHAIR

This invention allows differently abled people to control and direct their wheelchairs by simple hand gestures. This is especially useful for those who currently use wheelchairs but who do not have enough strength in their upper bodies to move themselves.

MY SANGAM (EDUCATIONAL PORTAL)

This educational portal provides learning tutorials to rural women through a computerised vocational learning experience. The portal utilizes cutting-edge haptics technology and aims to increase the number of skilled workers among women living in rural communities.

Amrita was conferred with the status of “University” by the Government of India on January 13th, 2003. In 2009, Amrita was given an ‘A’ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for all its campuses and programs and was ranked in the “Ivy league of Indian Universities” along with institutions as the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai.

BioQuest 2013

The first International Conference on Biotechnology for Innovative Applications was hosted by the Amrita School of Biotechnology on August 10 through August 14 at the Amritapuri campus. The conference focused on the ways in which research areas such as translational medicine, nanotechnology, neuroscience, genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, and bioengineering could contribute to alleviating human suffering and improving standards of living. The conference served as an ideal platform for distinguished experts from diverse areas of biotechnology to discuss and deliberate on established as well as emerging platforms and strategies.

International Conference on Sustainable Development and Governance: Building Commerce and Communi-ties

Jointly hosted by Amrita, Ettimadai Campus, and Deakin University (Australia) from December 14-17, 2013, the conference served as a platform for lead-ers and academics from around the world to consider management and governance solutions for the water, energy, and waste management crisis facing communi-ties and industry across the world.

International Conference on Women in Computing

This conference highlighted pioneering and cutting edge research by women in computing, social issues of relevance to women in computing, a platform to encour-age collaboration globally between researchers and suc-cessful professionals, and opportunities for role mod-eling and mentorship to encourage young women to enter the field of computing. The conference was organ-ized at the Ettimadai campus from January 9-11, 2013.

SecurIT 2012

Amrita hosted the first international conference of Security for the Internet of Things (SecurIT) at the

AMRITA CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS 38 .

Amritapuri campus, in August 2012. The conference highlighted pioneering and cutting edge research by women in computing, social issues of relevance to women in computing, a platform to encourage col-laboration globally between researchers and successful professionals, and opportunities for role modeling and mentorship to encourage young women to enter the field of computing.

ICTEE-2012

The International Conference on Technology Enhanced Education focused on developing educational technology for the benefit of society. The conference also investigated the role of innovation in the ever-increasing sustainable applications of technology in education. The ICTEE was hosted at Amritapuri campus in January 2012.

Nanobio-2012

The 2nd International Conference on Nanotechnology, hosted at the Kochi Campus in February 2012, focused on topics such as regenerative medicine, cancer nanotechnology, drug delivery, and molecular medicine. There were active discussions of new and emerging ideas and a brainstorming session regarding the emphasis of future research.

IGPI-2012

The 3rd annual Indian Global Psychiatric Initiative was convened at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences at the Kochi Campus in January 2012. The conference discussed the latest treatment modalities and research studies in areas related to mental healthcare and cov-ered topics such as psychiatric services and mental health delivery, community care, neurobiology and pharmacological treatment of schizophrenia, strategies and challenges in the treatment of depression, autism, and psychiatric diagnosis and classification.

The high-profile International Conference on Wireless Technologies for Humanitarian Relief was hosted at the Amritapuri Campus in December 2011. The conference attracted educators, researchers, tech-nologists, and students to share their knowledge and expertise in teaching and learning in order to stimulate high quality research work in wireless and related tech-nologies.The conference also focused on the importance and relevance in providing humanitarian relief.

ICCTSD-2011

The International Conference on Communication Technology and System Design was hosted at the Coimbatore Campus in December 2011. ICCTSD 2011 presented design methodologies, techniques, and experimental results on emerging electronics, circuits, and various topics on systems. It focused on cutting edge research, development, and applications of communica-tions and electronics technologies. The conference also stressed the importance of continuing and accelerating the momentum of research in the areas of electronics and telecommunication.

ICSTSD-2011

The International Conference on Society, Technology & Sustainable Development was organized by the Department of Social Work, Amritapuri Campus, and School of Social Work, the University at Buffalo, State University of New York on June 2011. The confer-ence focused on the crucial interfaces and dynamics of sustainable development with respect to indigenous practices and technology and explored the opportuni-ties and challenges in addressing sustainability through the integration of indigenous culture with present day policies, practices, and technology.
