This November brings about a brand new event in Amish Country. While thousands already travel to the Heartland during the fall months, thousands more will be making the journey from all across

the U.S. to witness or even participate in the first ever Amish Country Half Marathon and 5k race. While I am not a runner myself, I set out on a drive to survey the

potential racetrack. After traveling the trail I am still pretty confident that I will not be becoming a runner anytime soon. For those dedicated runners out there planning on participating, you have a challenge ahead of you and I have a great respect for your dedication. In this months issue of the Amish Heartland you will read about how

preparations are coming along for the marathon. For those of you planning on getting in your holiday shopping in the Heartland, consider checking out Amish Country Peddler, which carries every style of Crocs shoes for everyone in your family, and Homespun Treasures which specializes in primitive household wares and gifts. If you’re looking to purchase holiday furniture, stop by Jake’s

Handcrafted Oak in Holmesville. You will not be disappointed by the scenic drive along the way and the quality furniture the store has to offer. The holiday Christmas Open House will be taking place the second

weekend in Berlin and includes most of the shops that make up the large town. Get the most out of your weekend and plan to stay at Cricket Hill Cabins. The cabins will become your quiet home away from home as you spend your weekend touring the Heartland. This month is proving to be a very busy one in the Heartland. If you are

planning on traveling there this month, be sure to check out the calendar of events. Many stores will be hosting their holiday open houses, which means plenty of discounts coming your way. On November 10, Gospel Book Store will host Holmes County’s largest book signing. Bring your favorite Amish books and meet some of your favorite authors. With the holidays fast approaching, spend some time with your friends

and family by taking them to Amish Country. Spend the day shopping or taking in the countryside and just be thankful that you have them in your lives.

Plenty To Do and See in the Heartland!

Specializing in unique, customized furniture, Jake’s Handcrafted Oak strives to provide your home with pieces that you will love. If you can’t find exactly what you are looking for, Jake’s will work with you to design the piece of your dreams and create a memorable experience. Jake’s also strives to promote the local craftsmen in the community by showcasing their furniture within the store.

Jake’s Handcrafted got its start in 1996. “I had worked at a feed mill previously,” said Jake Chupp, owner, “and I decided I wanted to do something closer to home.” A friend of Chupp’s was in the furniture business and suggested he get into it as well. Now fifteen years later, Chupp has created a store well known amongst the locals. Jake’s Handcrafted is located just

eight short miles north of Millersburg. Customers can soak up the beautiful countryside along the

winding back roads of Holmesville as they make their way to the small furniture store. As you enter the store, you find yourself stepping into a true authentic, Amish atmosphere, as the smell of kerosene lamps fill the small

shop. Chupp commented that some shoppers find it to be a unique shopping experience.

Don’t let the name of the small shop deceive you. Jake’s carries eight different hardwoods from hickory and maple to cherry and of course oak, with up to 14 different finishes and stains. High tech finishes and varnishes are used on all furniture pieces making them resistant to everyday household spills and making for an easy clean up.Jake’s provides furniture for every

room in your household. Dining and living room pieces and bedroom sets of all styles are available. Chupp finds it hard to keep up with the popular trends in the furniture business as he enjoys a more traditional style. Everyone seems to be drifting toward the more modern and contemporary styles explained Chupp. At Jake’s, Chupp is always looking to

improve his furniture line. Along with keeping up with the modernization of his furniture line, Chupp’s biggest selling point is his ability to customize furniture pieces to match his customers needs. “We make custom pieces to work for each individual person,” said Chupp. Alongside his wife, Chupp will design furniture pieces that are unique to their store.“Being small like this you can be more

of a one-on-one business,” said Chupp. Making friends with his customer base has helped him to improve the quality of the furniture he carries. He enjoys meeting new people and maintaining

relationships with returning customers and creating custom pieces that will mean more to his customers. Chupp keeps a positive relationship

with his community. “We get as much furniture as we can from the builders at the local church.” Chupp strives to patronize the local artisans within his own community and maintain respect among his neighbors. Jake’s Handcrafted Oak is located

on 8239 Township Road 562 in Holmesville. For more information call 888-388-5650 and find out how Chupp can help you create a unique piece for your home.

was bought by the Schlabach family in 1995 offering even more accessories and a wider line of furniture. Tim Schlabach decided to join the family business once Amish Country Peddler became a part of it.Schlabach said his biggest success has

been that the business continues to grow and be successful. Schlabach has found that running such a successful business does pose its challenges and has proven to be a lot of work. But all that hard work has been very rewarding for him. What Schlabach enjoys most about

his job is that each day is different from the last. “I’m not doing the same thing over and over.” Schlabach also enjoys meeting new people and getting to know the regulars. Just like many of the businesses in the

area, the fall months are the busiest months for the stores. This November, as the heart of Amish Country gears up for the holidays, Amish Country Peddler and Homespun Treasures will be participating in their biggest event of the year. The Christmas Open House will take place November 8, 9 and 10 with discounts on all goods starting at 20 percent off November 8 and 10 percent off November 9 and 10.Special discounts and events take

place all throughout the year and can be found on their website and Facebook page. Amish Country Peddler and

HAVE A TRADITIONAL THANKSGIVINGThanksgiving is a time to be thankful

for the family you have, the friends you have made and all the wonderful memories that accompany them all. As you welcome guests into your home for the holidays, create an atmosphere for them that is both warm and inviting. The best way to make guests feel

welcome in your home is to have an entry way that is most inviting. Try a traditional, rustic or primitive approach when making your arrangements. Natural elements and warm tones like burnished wood and tarnished silver with hints of gold can create that warm, welcome feel.Continue the warm and inviting theme

throughout your home by choosing furniture pieces with rich dark stains and finishes. Choose traditional pieces that will remind your guests of the wonderful traditions the holidays bring each year.Choose furniture that is durable and

will outlast the holiday gatherings. Wear and tear during the holidays seems to be higher than everyday wear and tear. Choose sturdy hardwoods and stain resistant varnishes that make clean up a cinch. For some family gatherings, there is

always the potential for small children to be running around. Not only is this another reason to choose more durable and stain resistant furniture but also a reason to consider family friendly items. Avoid glass coffee tables and dining room tables with sharp edges.

Consider the size of your holiday gathering. Be mindful that the table you are purchasing is large enough to accommodate your party size. Consider tables with expandable sides or a small child’s seating area.To get the full holiday experience,

finish off your new look by adding fall floral arrangements and small gourd centerpieces. Choose fall themed table clothes and seat cushions. Ad touches of fall to all pieces throughout your home and make a traditional Thansgiving experience your guests will remember.

On November 24, runners from across the country will embark on a marathon unlike any other. The Amish Country Half Marathon and 5k Race will take runners on winding country roads through the beautiful Amish countryside. Eli Hochstettler, owner of Gospel Book Store and President of the Berlin Merchants, expressed his excitement in finding the listing for the marathon in Runner’s World Magazine, the world’s leading running magazine.

As a part of the Subway challenge series, Mark Fowler, marketing manager for Zinck’s Inn in Berlin, said this race will most surely be a challenge. Amish country is known for its winding roads and rather steep hillsides. Runners will face their steepest climb from mile marker nine through mile marker 13 as they climb a 482 foot slope. Fowler has been pleasantly surprised

with how smoothly preparations for the race have been coming together.

“So far 232 people have signed up from 14 different states,” said Fowler, at the October 16 meeting of the Main Street Merchants. Not only do these states include Ohio and Pennsylvania, but also Florida, California, New York, Maine, and Rhode Island to name a few. Fowler expects to have well over 500 runners registered by the day of the race.As the race draws nearer, the entry

fee for the race has slowly been increasing. Fowler has noticed that

with each price hike he receives a significant number of sign-ups and most of them have fallen on a Sunday. The entry fees began at $20 and will increase up to $75 for runners who wish to sign up on race day. All sign-ups are done online at www.runinamishcountry.com. Proceeds from the race will benefit the

Berlin Main Street Merchants with 50 percent of the earnings being donated to the East Holmes Fire Department.Recently, Fowler received news that

the Amish Country Marathon will be the only marathon taking place in the Mid-west at this time. “It is a big event because it is the only half marathon in the Mid-west, in November,” said Fowler. Running clubs have been in contact with Fowler looking for a fall marathon and have been directed his way. Runners will meet at Zink’s Inn on

Friday, Nov. 23 to pick up their racing packets and meet with sponsors during the expo from noon to 4 p.m. At 9 a.m., Saturday morning, runners will take their marks at the starting line on Township Highway 367 and it’s all up hill and down from there. “I think the one thing Holmes County

has been able to prove is that when we do an event we do it right,” said Fowler during an earlier interview with Amish Heartland. “Our area will benefit from this. I also think this will help us reach a new demographic. We have been looking for a way to bring the younger generations to Holmes County; this will give them a chance to see what mom and dad have been talking

about...that we are a destination.”Fowler reported at a recent meeting

with the Berlin Merchants that of all the 200 plus runners, 55 males and 19 women fall into that targeted demographic of under 40 years of age. While this is slightly disappointing for Fowler, he still has hopes this will change as the majority of runners are said to sign up on the day of the race. “Those people looking for the Amish

will be running right through them,” said Fowler. He explained as he was setting out mile markers for the race, he was approached by an Amish man who was excited for the race to take place. “They will most likely be lining the streets.” Runners will get the full Amish experience as they pass farms and schools along the path. Some of the schools will serve as water stations or break stations throughout the race.“Nobody ran a race where they

have outhouses or stopped at a one-room school house for water stops,” said Hochstettler. “We have a lot going for us.”

Nestled quietly amongst the trees off a back country road between Millersburg and Berlin, you’ll find Cricket Hill Cabins. The beautiful countryside and tranquil environment makes for the perfect retreat for you and a loved one. Martha Kline and her husband

purchased the cabins in 2004 and have kept them going strong for eight years now. Three cabins are tucked quietly in the woods with their names reflecting the nature that surrounds them; Apple Blossom Cabin, Grapevine Cabin and Wild Rose Cabin. “Peace and quiet at its finest” reads the slogan, which is exactly what keeps the guests coming back year after year. “I just love playing house here,” said

a guest staying in one of the cabins. A home away from home, Cricket Hill has all the amenities necessary to make your stay in Amish Country an enjoyable one. Some of these amenities include: a secluded, private setting in the woods, a loft with a

queen size bed that looks out over the beautifully decorated living area, a mini kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave and cooktop, and a full bath and shower. A Jacuzzi for two makes for an intimate get away and each cabin has been newly furnished with a back porch and outdoor hot tub.“The hot tubs are probably are

biggest selling point,” said Kline. “The winter months are the most beautiful [at the cabins.] People can sit outdoors in the hot tub and watch the snowfall.” Picture yourself enjoying the view with a nice glass of wine and you have set the scene for the perfect romantic getaway. While Cricket Hill promotes the use of

their cabins for couple retreats, Kline says they also entertain a returning group of women who love to get away for a weekend of shopping. All the cabins are one room cabins but have a pull out couch and guests can bring air mattresses if they like, explained Kline. A girls weekend out is just another

option available at Cricket Hill. Along with the beautiful surrounding

woods, the cabin grounds houses a small pond complete with a fountain to accomodate the feeling of serenity and peacefulness. Fishing is available to guests on a catch and release policy or the pond can simply be just another venue of relaxation and enjoying the company of a companion. A small fenced in pasture near the

office of the cabins is home to a couple of grazing steers. Kline says the guests enjoy the animals and especially enjoy the company of their small Brittany Spaniel appropriately name Brittany. Kline says, Brittany loves to greet the guests and playfully race them back to their cabins after returning from a long day on the town. Customizable packages are available
