Amiodarone advantageous in angina An increase in the ischaemic threshold occurred
when low-dose amiodarone was added to conventional antianginal medication, in a study of 63 patients with limiting angina pectoris. These patients had a history of persistent angina, despite double or triple combination antianginal medication, consisting of ~-blockers, calcium antagonists and long-acting nitrates.
The addition of amiodarone to these antianginal agents also resulted in a reduction in the rate-pressure product and ST segment depression, plus a significant increase in exercise tolerance, when compared with placebo. In addition, patients noted a mild reduction of anginal symptoms.
Amiodarone was well tolerated during this short-term study, although researchers recommended that careful follow-up should be made if this agent is given.
