Oklahoma losing in Allen Fieldhouse. Dedric Lawson had 13 points and 15 rebounds Wednesday night and the fifth-ranked Jayhawks began pursuit of their 15th consec- utive Big 12 title by holding off the No. 23 Sooners 70-63. Devon Dotson added 16 points and fellow freshman Quentin Grimes had 14 for the Jayhawks (12-1, 1-0), who survived a nervy final minute to win their 18th straight against Oklahoma in the Phog. “We don’t want any games to slip away from us,” Grimes said, “especially at home.” The last time the Jayhawks lost their initial Big 12 game was Jan. 8, 1991 against Oklahoma. The Sooners (11-2, 0-1) nearly turned the trick again Wednesday night, rallying just about every time Kansas went on a run. And when Charlie Moore missed two free throws in the final min- ute, Aaron Calixte’s off-bal- ance runner drew them to within 67-63 with 31 sec- onds to go. Hunt poured in 41 points and dished out a game-high five assists Wednesday night as the Moundbuilders opened 2019 with an 81-68 pounding of host Bethel in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Association action. Hunt finished 16 of 27 from the floor, including 4 of 8 from 3-point range in his third game this season eclipsing the 40-point mark. He also grabbed six rebounds and a team-high three steals. The Moundbuilders (13-1, 9-1 KCAC) spot- ted Bethel the first five points of the game and trailed by six until Hunt’s first trey, at the 17-minute mark of the first half. Hunt’s person- al 5-0 run stayed until Andrew Hamm gave Southwestern the lead off a feed from Hunt with 16:16 left in the half. The teams traded the lead seven times until Hunt scored off a feed from Hamm for a 21-20 advantage with 9:27 left in the first half. Another slow start hampered the Lady Builders, who fell 77-70 in KCAC play. Though the Lady Builders (3-12, 2-8 KCAC) went to the foul line 28 times, they only sank 16 of them. In stark contrast, the Lady Threshers (11-4, 6-4) trotted to the line 51 times, scoring 31 of their points off of freebies. The teams com- bined for 67 fouls and six players fouled out, three on each team. Bethel scored the first six points of the game as the Lady Builders started 0 of 4 with five turnovers in the first 3 1/2 minutes. Southwestern was just 1-of-10 shooting in the first quarter with seven turnovers. Bethel led 32-22 at halftime, then went on a 10-0 run to start the second half. Rylee Barnes buried a 3-pointer to stop the run, but the Lady Builders still trailed by 10, 48-38, entering the fourth quarter. Southwestern quickly cut the deficit to six on back-to-back bas- kets by Barnes and Jazmyne Laskey. Ashley Carrillo put back her own miss to make it a four-point game, 50-46, with 7:06 remaining. London Futch had a chance to cut it to one when she was fouled on a basket with 6:13 remaining, but missed the and-1. Laskey finally pulled the Lady Builders even with a pair of free throws at the 4:47 mark, but Karlie Schroeder converted a three-point play and Bethel never trailed again. Wednesday was a feast night for the Longhorns, who gorged themselves to the tune of 14 3-pointers in pushing past short-handed Kansas State in the second half for a 67-47 victory. The Wildcats were without Kamau Stokes, who averages 11.1 points per game. Stokes missed much last season with a broken ankle, and he rein- jured the it during a morn- ing shooting session and did not dress for the game. The Wildcats already were without Dean Wade, who is recovering for a foot inju- ry. Kace Febres hit 8 of 10 shots from the field, including 7 of 9 from 3-point range, and scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half for the Longhorns (9-4, 1-0 Big 12), who won for the fourth time in their past five games. Kerwin Roach II added 10 points in the winning effort. “Our guys did a really good job of keep- ing a winning mindset,” Texas coach Shaka Smart said. “We talked about that before this game because Kansas State always does a very good job of making it hard on you.” The Wildcats (10-3) have struggled offen- sively, averaging 67 points per game coming into conference play, and losing Stokes fur- ther hampered their ability to score. “I think we could’ve done a little bit better even without (Stokes and Wade) in there,” Barry Brown said. “Just get the ball moving side to side, I think motion worked a little bit for a stretch.” Makol Mawien had 12 points and was the lone Kansas State scorer to reach double fig- ures. “We talked about getting it to (Mawien),” K-State coach Bruce Weber said. “He strug- gled a little bit early in the game and maybe tried too much.” It was a good night for Texas from the 3-point line, shooting 64 percent and going 14 of 27, with five of those coming in the final five minutes.
