American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain MedicineChecklist for Managing Local Anesthetic Systemic Toxicity:
2012 VersionJoseph M. Neal, MD,* Michael F. Mulroy, MD,* and Guy L. Weinberg, MDÞ
Abstract: In 2010, the American Society of Regional Anesthesiaand Pain Medicine (ASRA) issued a practice advisory on local anes-thetic systemic toxicity (LAST). The executive summary of this workcontained a document that was intended to serve as a checklist for themanagement of LAST. Based on testing the checklist during a simu-lated episode of LAST, ASRA has issued an updated version thatshould replace the previous 2010 version. Electronic copies of theASRAChecklist, suitable for lamination and inclusion in a local anesthetictoxicity kit, are available from the ASRAWeb site (www.asra.com).

I n 2010, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia andPain Medicine (ASRA) issued its practice advisory on local
anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST).1 The practice advisoryincluded a checklist that was intended to guide the managementof LAST events. This issue of Regional Anesthesia and PainMedicine contains a study that used simulation to test the ef-fectiveness and usability of the ASRA Checklist.2 Based on the
results of that study, the 2010 version of the ASRAChecklist hasbeen modified to correct the checklist’s visual prominencedefects.
The revised ASRAChecklist is appended. Electronic copiesof the checklist can be obtained free of charge from the ASRAWeb site (www.asra.com) and are suitable for inclusion in a localanesthetic toxicity kit.
Authors who reference the ASRA practice advisory onLAST and/or the ASRA Checklist are reminded to cite thiscurrent version of the checklist along with the original practiceadvisory1 when appropriate.
