Discover the Art of TanglingMany people find drawing and

other creative activities relaxing. Butthe Zentangle Method of drawing—created by artists Rick Roberts andMaria Thomas in 2004—is meant tobe a truly meditative experience.

The method involves drawingtangles, which are simple patternscreated by repeating basic shapessuch as lines, dots, circles and ovals. The patterns are abstract instead ofrecognizable shapes like stars, heartsor flowers.

Traditionally, a Zentangle drawingbegins with a 3.5-inch square, although you can draw Zentangle-inspired art on any size of paper.

Using a pencil, lightly draw aborder around the edge of yourpaper, followed by a “string”—arandom line or lines that overlapand create other shapes. Theseshapes are then used as spaces todraw tangles.

Tangles should be drawn withblack ink and on white paper tokeep the process as right-brainedas possible. Tangling—the act ofdrawing tangles—is not the sameas doodling, which is often done asyour mind wanders. Instead, theZentangle Method requires theartist to focus on each stroke at atime, not worrying about what thefinal drawing will look like.

The purpose of tangling is toempty the mind of concerns andconcentrate on your breathing andthe movement of the pen along thepaper. As a bonus, a finishedZentangle square, called a tile, canstand alone as a beautiful, uniquepiece of art, or it can be arrangedwith other tiles.

Mexican Food FavoritesWhether throwing a fiesta or

just having an everyday meal, many say “Olé!” to Mexican fare.Tempt your taste buds with some ofthese favorites.

Salsa. The Aztecs are credited withmixing chopped tomatoes, chilies andother ingredients to create earlyversions of this sauce that is servedas a condiment or with tortilla chips asan appetizer.

Tacos. Consuming more than4 billion a year, America is loco(“crazy”) for tacos! This crunchy orsoft folded tortilla staple—usually filledwith meat, cheese, lettuce andtomatoes—evolved from a variety ofrecipes brought to the U.S. byMexican immigrants beginning in theearly 20th century.

Enchiladas. Translating to“chili-filled,” the rolled tortilla of anenchilada is traditionally stuffed withmeat and cheese, then covered in aspicy red, green or cream sauce.

Tamales. The tamale dates backas far as 7,000 B.C., and wascreated as a portable food that couldbe prepared ahead of time. Thesepackets of savory or sweet fillingsinside cornmeal dough are wrappedin corn husks or banana leavesbefore steaming.

‘Start Your Engines!’This Memorial Day weekend will

bring high-octane thrills to race fans. The Indianapolis 500, called “TheGreatest Spectacle in Racing,” willcelebrate its 100th running at theIndianapolis Motor Speedway, inSpeedway, Ind.

The track was built in 1909, and thefirst race dates back to May 30, 1911.It was canceled several times duringboth world wars, so 2016 will be the100th time drivers will race the200 laps of the 2.5-mile oval course, which equals 500 miles.

The IndyCar race featuresopen-cockpit, open-wheeled,turbocharged cars, similar to FormulaOne automobiles.

It is the world’s largest single-daysporting event, with more than350,000 fans following the action fromthe speedway’s viewing stands andinfield, and millions more watching theevent’s live TV coverage.

Among the race’s many traditionsare the pre-race ceremonies thatfeature the singing of patriotic songs,a balloon release during a rendition of“Back Home Again in Indiana,” andthe famous command for the33 drivers to “Start your engines!”

The winner, who earns a prize of$2.5 million, famously chugs a bottleof milk in victory lane, and later kissesthe fabled Yard of Bricks that marksthe race’s start and finish line.
