The American Battle Monuments Con血ussion (ABMC) maintains the American overseas

commemorative cemeteries and memorials. Nine of these cemeteries honor those who served and gave

their lives during World War I. Sixty-four American veterans on the DC War Memorial are buried or

listed on the Tal>lets of the Missing in ei如t of these cemeteries. All but one of the cemeteries were

designed紬d bu組t by血e AMBC.

The most recently acquired cemetery is that of the Lafayette Escadrille Memorial Cemetery in Mames-

la{oquette near Paris, France. In 20 17 the AMBC assumed responsibility for this cemetery that also

honors the Lafayette Flying Corps. It is a tribute to those Americans who flew with the French before

the United States joined the World War. As stated by the AMBC, `The Lafayette Escadrille Memorial

and Cemetery commemorates the birth of American combat aviation and serves as a symbol ofFranco-

American comradeship during World War I." This is the final resting place for one of the men whose

name is etched onto the DC World War Memorial.

Lt. Benjamin Stuart Walcott (1 896-19 1 7), a member of the Lafayette Flying Cops, us killed on

December 12, 1917 the on a combat patrol mission He had applied for transfer to the U.S. A正

Service and his commission had just arrived He us posthumously awarded the Croix de Guerre.

More information on this Memorial can be found in the paper on The Eme腹ence of American Air

Power in World War I q3ates, 2017) available on the AOI web site (aoidc.org). More infomation on

the AMBC and their overseas memorials can be found on the AMBC web site (wanbc.gov).

The seven other cemeteries are listed below along with the names of those veterans listed on the DC

War Memorial who are buried in them or listed on the Tholets of the Mssing..
