AMC’s “The Walking Dead”: Season 1 Recap and Spoilers – E03
December 14, 2010
This article is about AMC’s “The Walking Dead” Season 1 Episode 3 and is Part 3 of 6 articles.
Episode 3 of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” continues as Rick Grimes and the other survivors
continue to their camp from the department store. Meanwhile, Merle Dixon was left stranded on the
roof; handcuffed to a pipe. The group arrives at the camp where, finally, Rick is reunited with his wife
and son. Personally, this is the moment I have been waiting for in this show. The illustrations in the
comic series can only portray so much emotion, and I was very curious to see how this would act out on
screen. I thought the scene could not have been better. When first seeing his father, Carl looked as
though he was going to vomit with excitement. Rick, firmly embracing his son, fell to the ground with
tears of joy when he first saw him. However, Lori looked terrified as though she had just seen a ghost.
Later in the episode, it is explained that she did in fact feel as though she was looking at the walking
corpse of her husband. Shane, Rick’s partner and best friend, had told Lori that Rick was dead and there
was nothing that could be done to save him. This, however, will be discussed later with the explanation
of the episode’s title, “Tell it to the Frogs.”
After being reunited with his family in the post-apocalyptic world, Rick sits down with the group
of survivors in front of the camp fire and they all catch up on what has been happening around them.
Still embracing his pre-apocalyptic job, Rick wore his police uniform. The group also discusses the loss of
Merle and debate about whose responsibility it would be to tell Merle’s brother, Daryl Dixon, played by
Norman Reedus, what had happened to Merle. After the camp fire, the survivors retired to their
sleeping quarters, some tents and an RV, and rested up for the next day.
When Rick awoke, he received his first glance into the new society the survivors had created for
themselves. They all worked together to accomplish a common goal; to survive. Each had designated
chores: someone would watch the children while others did laundry, hunted for food, gathered fire
wood, secured the area from walkers, and other duties. Rick saw that together, they functionedsuccessfully as a small, societal unit. All of a sudden, Rick heard a scream from the children a short ways
into the woods. Rick, Shane, and Glenn ran into the woods, following the screams. When they found
what they had been looking for, the group was both disgusted and horrified. Knelt over a freshly killed
dear was a walker, eating the animal’s entrails and failing to notice it was surrounded. Rather than
announcing their presence to all of the other walkers in the area with a gunshot, the group elected to
bludgeon the walker, until Dale, played by Jeffrey DeMunn, decapitated it with a blow from his axe. As it
turns out, the deer was being tracked by Merle’s brother Daryl.
I was very excited to see this scene’s transition from the comic series to the screen. When I first
saw this scene in the comic book, it really stood out in my mind as a key event in the show. In the comic,
however, the deer was not actually tracked by Daryl (Daryl was not an original character in the original
“The Walking Dead” comic series). In spite of this, I thought the scene was just as amazing in the show as
it was in the comic book. It really built tension in the episode by showing that even though the group of
survivors was on the outskirts of the city, hidden away from the masses of walkers; they were not
entirely safe from the reach of all of them. Also, I thought the fact that the walker in the comic could kill
the deer by himself showed how powerful a lone, undead walker could be.
After their encounter with the walker in the forest, the group had no choice but to tell Daryl
what had happened to his brother Merle. Daryl did not take it well, put up a fight, and had to be

restrained by Rick and Shane. Feeling guilty and responsible for leaving Merle on the roof of the
department store, T-Dog tells Daryl what happened and how he was responsible for dropping the key.
“Well, pick it up.” Daryl shot back. I thought this was one of the best lines in the episode. Watching T-
Dog trip and drop the key down the drain was a very tense experience as a member of the audience.
This situation seems simply explained by T-Dog’s choice of words; “I dropped the key.” When Daryl tries
to reflect on the events, he sees no reason to leave his brother on the roof, and demonstrates his failure
of understanding of the situation by his simple, yet powerful line. After explaining the situation to Daryl,
Rick’s guilt gets the best of him. He decides he would return to the city for guns that he abandoned upon
his first entry into the city, and save Merle from the roof while he was there. Although empathizing with
the concern of his wife that he would not return, he decided it would be best if he, Glenn, and Daryl
enter the city to complete the mission. Rick, Glenn, and Daryl load up the truck and head to the city to
rescue Merle and get the guns.
After the group left, the rest of the survivors continued about their routine at the camp,
although worried about the group’s journey. To ease his tensions and get some time with Carl, Shane
decided to take Carl to the lake where they would hunt for frogs. In Rick’s absence, Shane had been
growing closer and closer to Carl and Lori, seeing them as his own family. With Rick’s return, Shane had
lost the family he had been caring for, and now felt alone. Lori noticed Shane with Carl in the lake andwalked over to intervene. Telling Carl to go elsewhere so Shane and Lori could talk, Lori told Shane that
she did not want to have anything to do with him now that her husband had returned. No longer would
they be having a relationship, and no longer would Shane be spending time with Carl. Feeling hurt and
angry, Shane could do nothing about the situation, and began to feel resentful of his friend Rick. Soon
after the confrontation, Shane oversaw a man who was physically abusing his wife. Exploding with rage
about the prior confrontation with Lori, Shane unleashed all of his aggression on the man. After Shane
lost his composure and overreacted in the form of aggression, it was clear to everyone in the group that
the stress of the situation was getting to him.
Meanwhile, back in the city, Rick, Glenn, T-Dog, and Daryl have elected to return to the
department store to search for Merle before they retrieve the guns that Rick had left behind before. They arrived at the door to the roof; still chained shut with no sign of walkers on the other side. With a
bolt cutter, they remove the lock and chain. Rick, Daryl, T-Dog, and Glenn hurried to the pipe where
they had left Merle handcuffed. Where Merle was sitting remained a puddle of blood, a severed hand,
and a hacksaw underneath the dangling handcuffs.
