    SPARKY’S PLUG

    EDITOR’S NOTE

As autumn approaches we can look in our rear view mirrors and see all that summer fun (and not-so fun) disappearing down the road

into our collective memories. Seems to have been a lot of wet riding … I now keep rain gear in the bags at all times.

In June my wife and I visited the UK to spend time with relatives and see some sights. We visited Warwick Castle, Nottingham Cas-

tle, Canterbury Cathedral, Canterbury Castle and Sissinghurst Castle. While in the vicinity of the Birmingham area I managed to pay

a visit to the British National Motorcycle Museum at Solihull. Talk about a kid in a candy store … it was totally awesome. On Pages

14-17 are some photos of the many unique (all British) machines there.

I would like to remind our members that there is a FREE Wanted/For Sale space in this newsletter to advertise bikes, machines,

tools, etc. so by all means take advantage of this by emailing details to me. It helps to send a picture of anything you want to sell.

Once again many thanks to all the folks who helped out for this issue of Re-Cycle with photos and info! Note: The extra pages in the electronic version contain more photos from club events and also feature other events such as Blind

Lizard, Bearded Lady and Victoria Volkfest.

It seems just a short time since I was complaining about the cold weather and wishing for warm dry riding. And now the hot summer

weather is mostly behind us and we are into my favorite riding season. Nothing can top a cool morning ride with a stop for a cup of

coffee somewhere. Even my old bikes like it as they seem to run better as the weather cools down. The Viking Chapter has some

great events scheduled this fall and I encourage you to try to attend as many as you can. All too soon we’ll, once again, be complain-

ing about the weather and looking forward to spring.

One of my favorite winter events is the International Motorcycle Show at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The 2015 show is

scheduled for February 6th, 7th, and 8th. I would like to have bikes in the show that have not been displayed before or bikes that have

not been shown for a while. So, button up your latest restoration project or new addition to your collection and plan on bringing it to

the show. I’ll be contacting you as the date gets closer so be ready.

I also encourage you to attend the next general meeting at Fury Motorcycles. This is the meeting where we elect officers to fill va-

cancies left by officers whose term has ended. The open positions are Vice President, Secretary, and (2) Board of Director positions.

If you have ever thought it would be fun and interesting to help guide the club here is your opportunity to do so. It’s not too late for

you to get on the ballot. It’s fun and interesting and a great way to contribute your talents, ideas, and opinions to your club.

So, while the warm summer weather is on the wane there is still plenty of great riding weather ahead and lots of club activities to

participate in. Come join us or we just might make up our own story as to why you weren’t there.

    CLUB NEWS

As far as numbers, turnout, vendors and show machines, this year took the cake. A

very successful and enjoyable event was once again done in concert with the local

VJMC Twin Cities chapter. A big tip of the helmet goes to those folks who did the

lion’s share of the organizing, setup and teardown. (Special kudos to Sean O’Neil)

Also the volunteers, without whom the event just wouldn’t happen.

Our national AMCA president, Richard Spagnolli, attended in person and ad-

dressed the gathered faithful at our Friday night banquet, where he was very com-

plimentary of our efforts and our co-operation with the VJMC to make the event

such a success. He also presented an award to Trudi Johnson-Richards on the occa-

sion of her retirement as Vice-President of the national AMCA and her years of

    service. Congrats and thankyou Trudi!

And then of course there are the motorcycles themselves, around which

this whole event revolves. A great selection of American, British, Ger-

man, Italian and other European machines were lined up next to a stun-

ning array of Japanese machines. AMCA and VJMC members again

combined to put on a display that turned out to be a strong draw for mo-

torbike enthusiasts everywhere. This year the Rockers Ton-Up Club

had a corner of the barn staked out with some of their own machines.

Volunteers at the entrance gates and the member sign-up/T-shirt table

did a bang up job. This year’s T-shirts (nice design BTW) sold out

quickly which means we gotta have more next year.

    Trudi & Richard

The banquet being moved to Friday night seemed to work

well and was very tasty … the highlight being a speech

from our AMCA national president Richard Spagnolli.

The swap meet was one of the biggest ever with lots of

transactions in the paddock. Sure enough the rain paid its

Saturday afternoon visit but not before lots of activity had

gone down. The Tech Talks once again provided a great

forum for some of our more experienced members to in-

struct and respond to questions of a gearhead nature.

Prize winning bikes were Dave Moot’s 1969 Royal En-

field Interceptor (People’s Choice) and Gary Kloss’s

1970 Moto Guzzi V7 (Chrome wrench awarded by the

    VJMC)

Second Annual Ride & Rally, Money Creek Campground, July 11 thru 13, 2014 by Doug Nelson

The word for this year’s event was WET, biblical perhaps. The Friday ride is the President’s Ride and when I awoke in the morning

I could hear the down pouring rain. The ride was scheduled out of Prescott at 10 AM. Ron Spargo, being the president that he is,

felt obligated to be there for the President’s ride. This year we set the record for the fewest number of riders. While it may be tied in

the future, it will never be broken. Diane and I waited out the rain and went to Prescott at around noon. By then the skies had

cleared and we rode straight down to Money Creek, first on 35 until Nelson and back to 61 in Wabasha.. Diane rode her 1200 Sport-

ster and I rode the 67 Guzzi.

At the campground we were met by Curt and Maggie Block with their

granddaughter Emma. Curt rode an older Indian to the campground. Brats

were grilled on a nice charcoal grill. On Saturday morning there was a plan

to head into Rushford for breakfast. Nice breakfast and then a ride to the

top of the bluff overlooking Rushford. Simply an amazing vista to behold.

After that we attempted to ride west to Lanesboro. The further we rode the

darker the skies became ... it quickly became clear that the ride heading

west now was high tailing it east. We made it back to the campground just

before the skies opened up. The campground had provided a 20x40 foot

tent for us right next to where we camped and what a godsend this turned

out to be. We were able to set under the tent with bikes protected and just

watch it rain. And rain it did.

    What … Me Worry?!?

    CLUB NEWS

Later on that afternoon, here come two more bikes, Dena and Ivar Natins.

Impressive to say the least. Great test for the rain gear and new bikes in an

absolute downpour. A bit later, Sean O’Neil and Mark Jilk joined the group.

Kathy and Roger Rimnac drove over in their truck from a near by camp-

    ground.

Chicken and fresh sweet corn were grilled for the Saturday evening feed.

The evening was spent telling extremely tall tales around the campfire.

Sunday morning and camp was broken and the bikes packed up. We headed

into Lanesboro to a very fun train car dinner. Incredible breakfast was had by

all. From there it was ride back home.

We all felt a bit sorry for those who did not make the event. Next year will

already be the third annual, please make a mental note to circle it on the cal-

endar. It will always be the next weekend after the Fourth of July weekend.

The 74th Sturgis Rally Ride, August 2014

Once again the Viking Chapter faithful ventured forth to the

world’s largest annual gathering of two wheel machines.

The club’s first mission was to deliver a check for $1210 to the

township of Wessington Springs SD for their tornado relief

fund. This town has been the site of the Viking Chapter stop-

over on the way to Sturgis and this was our way of showing

appreciation for their hospitality and helping them to rebuild.

This donation consisted of $500 from our club funds with the

remainder contributed by members. Viking Chapter members

presented our check to the town Sheriff (see pic at right).

Spectacular scenery (human and terrain) and the weather mostly

co-operative. The bad boys, Ivar (speeding ticket) and Paul

(towed bike) had to pay for some of their fun! (See their mug-

    shots on page 11)

Chaska BBQ Picnic & General Meeting, August 17, 2014

Honda Gold Wing; Ivar Natins, 2010 Kawasaki Concourse

This is usually our best attended general meeting of the year. Gee

could it be all that yummy food?!?!. Besides everyone socializing

and catching up on club gossip, probably the most important as-

pect is the nomination of new club officers for the coming year.

This year’s open positions and nominees are: Kerry Rassmussen

for Vice-President, Diane Nelson for Secretary and Mark Jilk &

Tim O’Keeffe for Directors. Voting will take place at the Septem-

ber General Meeting to be held at Fury Motors in So St Paul (see

    calendar on Page 2).

This year the picnic location was moved to Lion’s Park, which

worked out really well. Special thanks to Tom & Cheryl Whittles,

Doug & Diane Nelson, Jerry & Trudi Richards, Roger & Kathi

Rimnac for their work to get our plates and bellies full.

Perfect days with perfect eye-candy …. we need more of these! Quite a few Viking Chapter members in attendance.

The annual Father’s Day Blind Lizard Rally and the Bearded Lady Motorcycle Freakshow probably feature the broadest array and

most eccentric two wheel collections in the Twin Cities.

    VICTORIA VOLKFEST RIDE-IN BIKE SHOW - 15 August 2014

Really decent Viking Chapter turnout this year for the annual Volkfest. Kudos to the organizers for lining us up outside an out-

standing micro-brewery! It was great to see all the attention being paid to the bikes by enthusiasts from eight to eighty. We were

also lucky to have on display the Indian “Wall of Death” cycle, a modified version of their thrilling new Indian Scout.

    NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM, SOLIHULL, U.K. - 18 June 2014

This museum occupies an eight acre site near the city of Birmingham and holds the world’s largest collection of British motorcycles.

In September 2003 a massive fire destroyed 380 machines in their collection. 150 of these were restored while others were pur-

chased and restored to boast a collection of over 850 machines today, most of which (as you can see from the photos) are in pristine

condition. Most of the work is done by volunteers and retirees.

One of the most valuable motorcycles in the world is the

Brough Superior Golden Dream, which is the only example

of George Brough's show model for the 1938 Olympia

show. Handbuilt by Brough and Freddie Dixon, the Golden

Dream has two pairs of horizontally opposed cylinders, one

above the other, with two longitudinal crankshafts to give

vibration free running. The two crankshafts shafts are

geared together, with one driving the rear wheel and the

other driving the oil pump and magdyno. Two Brough

Dream Fours were built but World War II stopped develop-

ment. The second Brough Dream has a black and chrome

finish and is in private ownership.
