NOTES FROM GARY’S GARAGE
EDITOR’S NOTE
Hi everyone! I‘ve been a club member for a good number of years, but had a busy schedule and haven‘t felt that I had
opportunity to contribute the time that a volunteer position would require. However, the position of newsletter editor al-
lows me to contribute that time at odd hours of my choosing, and I‘ve found it something I enjoy. So I hope to be the
Viking chapter editor for some time to come.
I‘ve been a professional entertainer for the last 40 years in various capacities, and I do minimal full-time in a music store
in Forest Lake for benefits. In between the gigs and the day to day job, I tune and repair pianos, and I‘m also the news-
letter editor for the local Piano Technician‘s Guild. Hence the lack of time. Currently I perform with a Dueling Piano act
―River Rats‖ and have been enjoying playing at the piano bar at the new Nye‘s here and again.
I turned 60 at the end of January; this makes me one of the younger old men in the club. My interest in antique motorcy-
cles started with a ‗76 CB550F that someone traded to me for a broken chain saw. As I was a single man at the time, I
promptly parked in in my living room and started to work on it. Later, I purchased a mid-60‘s Vespa from a club mem-
ber and was talking to one of my girlfriend‘s co-workers about it (Tim O‘Keefe) who recognized the bike because he
was also a club member—and I was in.
Later on I talked a guitar player friend into joining; he had an old BMW R60 and I told him he would like the people and
personalities in the club. With his straightforward and friendly demeanor, Tim Gadban was a perfect fit and became a
true asset to the club. Although he is relinquishing his role as editor, he will continue in many capacities, including help-
ing me transition into this role. So that‘s gone full circle.
I spent most of last year unable to ride because of an injured hand and am looking forward to a much better season this
year. I‘ll try to make it to as many events as I can, take as many pictures, and write stuff. But I‘ll need your help—often
my schedule interferes, so if you have a contribution, photos, a short article, or you just can tell me something that will
help, make it known. I‘ll put it all together into a semi-coherent newsletter. Deal?
I just returned from two weeks in Costa Rica where I warmed up a bit and got my battery recharged. I was sur-
prised by how many 125-150cc dirt bikes I saw there, mostly Honda and Yamaha (very few road bikes). Con-
sidering that most roads are gravel/dirt except for a few main highways I guess that dirt/trail bikes would be
the obvious choice. Honda and Yamaha must sell a ton of those down there. A lot of ATVS running around
also. One thing I noticed is nearly everyone on a MC or ATV was wearing a day glow reflective strap across
their torso. I don‘t know that it improved their visibility during the day, but at night it helped a lot. A neat easy
-to-use idea I thought. Anyway with all those bikes running around on those curvy roads I really started to get
the bug, so come on summer... I‘m ready!
Returning from my vacation I was brought down to reality very quickly when getting my truck at the Park-n-
Fly lot. It was buried under about a foot of snow. Now, I‘m from Minnesota and I have a long handled snow
brush in the cab all winter, so no problem I thought. But remember I just flew in from a 90 degree climate with
a pair of strap on sandals and a thin pair of socks on my feet. Needless to say I did the minimum I needed to
get on the road and finished the job the next day. I know, I know, I can hear it now, poor baby, came back
from a tropical vacation and got his tootsies cold and wet. I know it‘s a tough job, but somebody‘s got to do it.
The sun is already feeling a little more powerful and my driveway is now clear of ice, this means show season
is approaching. Donnie Smith show is Mar. 24-25, volunteers will be needed to man our booth and we may
need a few more bikes for display. Of course its time to be thinking of and preparing for our spring show at
the state fair grounds too. As many bikes and volunteers as possible will be needed for that, so start planning
and preparing now.
I hope the snow melts fast, and I see you on the road soon!

Memorial Rifle Squad
Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery
15550 Highway 115
Little Falls, Minnesota 56345
To Whom It May Concern,
Enclosed you will find a check for $75.00 to the Memorial Rifle Squad. This memorial is in honor of my father Kenneth
Delmer James, who was buried at Camp Ripley on April 26,2017. The services provided by the Memorial Rifle Squad
were greatly appreciated.
My husband and I recently participated in a fall motorcycle swap meet sponsored by the Viking Chapter of the Antique
Motorcycle Club. I decided to make cookies and bars to have available for participants and requested donations for these
items to the Memorial Rifle Squad. (See endorsed flyer) I received $66.61 from Viking Chapter club members as dona-
tions and have rounded that amount up to $75.00. I hope this donation will help other families of veterans to have posi-
tive experiences such as mine, at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.
Sincerely,
Marcia Engvall

Ms Engvall:
Thank you ever so much for the 575.00 donation. As stated in my earlier letter to you, outlining the workings
of the Memorial Rifle Squad (MRS), the men are a very dedicated group and feel very honored to be partici-
pating in the daily burials at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery (MSVC) at Little Falls.
Each and every Veteran buried there is very special to all of the members of the MRS. The money will be used
to purchase any additional supplies or equipment needed to conduct memorial services for the deceased veter-
ans.
Again I thank you and the Viking chapter club members for your donation.
Sincerely,
Terry J Schwab, Adjunct/Finance Officer

There were around
7000 bike given away

Free Bikes 4 Kidz
Mission & Purpose
Free Bikes 4 Kidz is a
non-profit organization
geared toward helping
all kids ride into a hap-
pier, healthier childhood
by providing bikes to
those most in need. The
public donates gently
used bikes, we organize
thousands of volunteers
to clean and refurbish
them, and then we give
them away to kids in
need.
Every year 25 million
bikes are sold in the
US. One-third of those
bikes are 20‖ wheel-
size, or smaller. Since
kids grow like weeds,
over 8 million bikes
are virtually outgrown
each year. Endless
supply. Sustainability.

Subject Thank from FB4K
Dear David,
We just wanted to extend a
heartfelt thank you to you
and your group from Vi-
king chapter Antique Mo-
torcycle Club for volun-
teering with us this season.
Your help in getting bikes
cleaned up and ready to
ride was amazing.
We had a banner year this
year and we could not
have done it without you!
We collected just over
9,000 bikes and gave away
almost 7,000. That means
almost 7,000 kids got
bikes here in the Twin Cit-
ies and for many of them it
was their first bike. We are
so grateful for your sup-
port in our mission to get
more kids on bikes!
Thank so much and we
hope to see you next year!

TRIUMPH Motorcycles 2018 Product Release “Back in Black” Party November 30th 2017
Roger and I were lucky enough to nab a ticket to this
V.I.P. event. It was held at the MODIST Brewery in
Minneapolis on November 30th. Free beer and food
made for a very enjoyable evening! Oh yeah, about
the bikes. The event featured the latest premium, high
-performance Triumph motorcycles – including the
yet-to- be-released Triumph Speedmaster and Bobber
Black. These have not even hit the showroom floors
yet. Each new motorcycle was cloaked in a black cov-
ering, thus enhancing the suspense. One by one, each
was unveiled, to ―oohs and aahs‖ from the crowd. We
sat on them and kicked a few tires. There was even a
―burn out‖ done by one of the hosts. The fact that Tri-
umph did not make an appearance at this year‘s IMS
Show made it even more special!

The general meeting at Leo‘s South was not very well attended, but Leo‘s had really stepped up and had
twelve pizzas waiting for us! So the running joke was that everyone had their own pizza. Whatsamatta, since
when do we snub FREE PIZZA? (To be fair, the website still listed the meeting at St. Paul Indian, but I‘d be
interested to know if anyone actually went there by accident….!
