‘Mbombela, this is for you!’Arnold and Michelle Germishuys, and Nathan Billingham. Albert van Putten and Hennie Viljoen.
It promised to be the book launch of the year, and it certainly did not disappoint when hundreds of supporters, family members and friends i lled Buffalo Court at Riverside Mall to hear Tracy Todd speak about her newly published memoir. Some people had travelled from as far as Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand.
Guests enjoyed a glass of wine and snacks, along with the opportunity to mingle with Comrades legend, Bruce Fordyce, who wrote the foreword for the book, well-known Afrikaans singer, Mathys Roets, and the woman of the hour herself.
Brave Lotus Flower Rides the Dragon is the inspiring, engaging, yet deeply personal story of Tracy’s life since the horrii c car accident which left her paralysed from the neck down.
It is also the story of those who stood by her side over the last
19 years; her caregivers, friends, and the supportive Lowveld community.
The book was crowdfunded on the website, thundafund.com, where over one hundred people raised the R112 550 to get the memoir published.
“This community, each and every one of you, Brave Lotus Flower Rides the Dragon is for you,” Tracy said to the crowd.
She thanked her “dream team” of organisers for all their help in transforming Buffalo Court into a professional book launch venue.
“Let us remember, we are in a shopping mall,” she said with a smile.
She also praised Ron Olivier, who designed the cover of her memoir.
“For me, it’s an amazing thing to have a person in a wheelchair on the front cover of the book,” Tracy said.
Attendees were also treated to animated and heartfelt talks by Fordyce, Tracy’s physiotherapist Melanie Harding, Ari Seirlis of the QuadPara Association of South Africa, and publisher Tracey McDonald.
The launch really hit a high note when crooner, and Tracy’s close friend, Roets took to the stage, performing crowd favourites such as the late Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah.
A paralysis/spinal awareness drive was also held in Buffalo Court over the weekend, where
visitors to the mall and able-bodied members of the public were encouraged to take part in a wheelchair race to see what being in a wheelchair was all about.
It highlighted, in turn, the lack of facilities for physically-disabled people in the Lowveld region.

Shooting of i reworksis prohibited by law
Fireworks are not allowed to be discharged in the City of Mbombela.
MBOMBELA - Fireworks are not allowed to be discharged in the municipal area. The regular shooting of so-called “shop-goods i reworks” available over the counter, leaves pet owners with their hands in their hair.
Ms Celia Sutton, from the SPCA, explained that not only the noise, but also the l ash of the explosions terrii ed dogs.
“They get so scared, they just run. They don’t know where they are going, they just try to get away from it.” As a result, dogs get lost and injured.
Mr Johan von Weidts, from the Mbombela Fire and Rescue Services, coni rmed that municipal by-laws prohibited it. New by-laws have been drafted for the now-amalgamated City of Mbombela, which is expected to be approved by the council this year. However, old and new by-laws unequivocally forbid it. “The main concern is the risk it poses to the well-being of people and animals, as well as the destruction of property,” he said.
The other is the disruption of animal management and noise. “It disrupts people’s general being,” he added. “They can’t go away and leave their pets at home, and the choice not to have to contend with the noise is taken away from the general public.”
To allow for special celebrations, it is permitted on the following three days of celebration: New Year’s Eve (18:00 to 01:00), Chinese New Year (18:00 to 22:00) and Diwali (18:00 to 22:00).
For i rework displays at events, permission is needed from SAPS and the City of Mbombela Fire Department. The police have to approve what explosives may be used. For an event, a pyrotechnician has
to apply for permission to the SAPS, and the date, time and place must be specii ed. The event organiser is also required to take steps to raise public awareness thereof.
“Without warning, people are left vulnerable,” Von Weidts explained. Permission enables the i re department to place a i re engine at the scene.
The SAPS regulates the licensed sale of i reworks, which are still dangerous. There are 27 licensed traders in Mbombela, and 57 in the entire Lowveld. Retailers must adhere to strict requirements in terms of their property.
The SAPS routinely coni scate goods from anyone who does not comply. The police and i re department agree that, despite their best efforts to control the use of i reworks, the biggest problem is its uncontrolled use by the general public.
The municipality has challenges policing the by-law at the moment, and the SAPS are tasked with enforcing it.
A police ofi cer can i ne a transgressor with a J534 on the spot, should he catch someone in the act, or have a witness statement to that effect. No child under 16 may use i reworks either, unless under adult supervision.
Transgressors face stiff i nes and even imprisonment, and as Von Weidts points out, “Ignorance is not an excuse”.
He added that so-called Chinese lanterns were prohibited too, given the i re danger they pose to surrounding plantations as their landing cannot be secured. “If just fewer people shoot shop-goods i reworks, that will already make a substantial difference,” Von Weidts concluded. To report the shooting of i reworks, phone the SAPS on 076-731-6431.

Annual bazaar a grand success

The sun beat down mercilessly on the stallholders at the annual Westergloed NG church bazaar on Saturday morning. Everything from pancakes and knitted teddies, to the Laevelders Country and Boereorkes came together to sell their wares and revel in the Lowveld sunshine. The band itself was a huge success, the earthy and warm tones of the lead vocalist bringing old country classics to life.
Much fun was had by all, and after perusing the outside area, crunchy candy l oss in hand despite the protestations of my teeth, it was time for a lengthy chat with the always-delightful Karin from Pro-Life and a very jolly fellow with windswept and unruly white locks, who wanted to convince me that his
products were the best in the west.
After the warmth of the summer sunshine, it was time to enter the cooler hall, and discover what other goodies were on offer. This proved to be an interesting turn of events. An enclosed room housed a glass-blower, her bright, hard l ame belying the delicate tiny creatures she produced, from mice with curling tails to beads in a variety of swirling colours.
Afri Orchards were in the i nest form, their beautiful blooms delicately curving, colours which defy you to imagine anything similar made by human hands, impeccably formed faces, framed by l awless lacy tendrils. After an excellent turnout, both customers and stallholders alike had to agree, the day was a roaring success.

the mySchoolmyVillagemyPlanet programme aids schools to raise funds by simply encouraging all the families of the school to sign up and receive a mySchool card. Each time they shop at the various local and national partners, a percentage of their purchases go back to the school or charity they support. “the funds are well-received by the school on a monthly basis and are used wisely by all schools that are benefi ciaries in various ways, from replenishing books for the library, building additional sports fi elds, or running feeding schemes,” said ms Liz Robbertse, community organiser for this programme. A mySchool drive was held throughout curro on February 24. the class that returned the most mySchool applications were rewarded with pizzas from Panarotti’s. Pizza Pete and mr Rhino of Panarotti’s ilanga mall handed out the meals. the children in the foundation phase grasped this challenge with the utmost enthusiasm, and were crowned the winners. Should you wish to sign up and support your children’s school, simply contact Liz on 083-284-9280 or [email protected]. to read more about this programme visit www.myschool.co.za.

So is die Protestante-leer in Suid-
Afrika gevestig.

Ms Bremley Smith, Ms Lynette Rossouw and Mr Tobias Mahlangu assist members of the public with irearm licence applications at the local police station.
Existing and prospective irearm owners who want to apply for or renew their irearm licences can do so at the Nelspruit Police Station.
Nelspruit Post has compiled this step-by-step instruction guide.
If you have never applied for a irearm licence before, you should know:
The process starts at a irearm training centre, and not at the police station.
The application process has two phases. Phase one establishes whether the applicant is competent to own and operate a gun. It takes 90 days.
Phase two is the irearm-licence application. This also takes 90 days.
The two phases cannot be done at the same time.
Phase 1: Get your competency certiicateStep 1: Go to your nearest irearm training
centre.Step 2: Choose whether you want to
operate a handgun, shotgun or rile. The application for each type of gun is done and paid for separately.
Step 3: Pass the relevant course for the gun you seek to operate.
Step 4: Receive your training certiicate. The certiicate for a handgun is valid for ive years. Certiicates relating to shotguns or riles remain valid for 10 years.
Once expired, the holder of a certiicate must approach a training centre to obtain a new one.
Only after step 4 does the applicant approach the police station with his
competency certiicate.Step 5: Visit the SAPS to apply for a
competency certiicate.Take the following with you:• Two copies of your identity document• Two colour passport photos• A copy of your training certiicate in (4)
with your training results• R70
A complete guide to obtaining a irearm licence
• Two testimonials• A competency application form.Step 6: The police interview your friends
and/or family to ascertain whether you are competent to own a irearm.
Step 7: The police register your application and takes it to the provincial police headquarters in Ferreira Street. This happens within seven days. Within
two weeks, it is transported to the Central Firearms Register.
The applicant’s background and criminal record are studied to ascertain whether he should be allowed to operate a gun.
A panel approves or denies applications based on what has been placed before it.
The process must be completed within 90 days. This was the rationale behind section 24 of the Firearms Control Act, which requires that a licence holder must renew his within 90 days before it expires.
Phase two: The irearm licenceStep 1: Obtain a competency certiicate
from the police as explained above.Step 2: Go back to your nearest police
station.Take the following with you:• Two copies of your identity document• Two colour passport photos• A copy of your training certiicate in (4)
with your training results• R140• Two testimonials• A irearm licence application form.Step 3: The police register this application
and take it to the provincial headquarters in Ferreira Street. This takes a week.
Within two weeks, it is transported to the Central Firearms Register.
Your application should be approved or denied in 90 days.

Marathon icon calls on local parkrunner
Last week Friday a legend visited Penryn Prep during chapel time. Bruce Fordyce, a nine-time Comrades Marathon winner and international icon made an appearance at the school. He told the children some of his stories, and presented a 100th Parkrun Halls Nelspruit shirt to one of the school’s pupils. Nathan de Klerk (11) is the youngest parkrunner to complete 100 parkruns.
“We would like to congratulate our own hero, Nathan, and thank Mr Fordyce for coming. We are so proud,” said Ms Gill Smythe, marketing liaison of Penryn.
