AUSD – Minutes – Meeting of May 1, 2014
Board/Superintendent Comments:
José Luis Pérez ~ “A lot of good things happened in this meeting and a lot of
good things will happen in the future. When I ask questions, it is not with malice,
it is because I don’t understand the information, it is not out of distrust. I want to
thank the Superintendent and I appreciate the direction we are going and the
way you are leading the District. Thank you very much.”
Carolyn M. Wilson ~ Mrs. Wilson stated that this District has amazing students
as reflected in the recognitions held tonight. It is amazing to see what our
students are accomplishing despite any difficulties they are experiencing. Mrs.
Wilson was very proud to learn tonight that Loren Newton, an Alvord student
has the highest GPA in the county!
Greg Kraft ~ Absent
Ben Johnson ~ Mr. Johnson stated that he attended the funeral services for
Marisa Serrato and he was touched by the poems her sister read at the service.
Mr. Johnson announced that today is a Day of Prayer. Mr. Johnson also
announced that Friday, May 9th is Board Member Action Day which is a special
opportunity for Board Members to join with CSBA to promote the Governance
First legislative agenda. On May 9th governance teams from across the State will
meet with the Assembly and Senate representatives in their local district offices.
CSBA is scheduling these meetings.
Art Kaspereen, Jr. ~ Mr. Kaspereen stated that since he has been on the Board
of Education he feels younger because going out to school sites and interacting
with students rejuvenates you. “Every day I cannot wait to go to work.” Mr.
Kaspereen stated that the talent show at Norte Vista High School was
outstanding and to see the talents our students have is amazing and exciting. Mr.
Kaspereen stated that he wishes sites would coordinate their events so that the
Board can be supportive; however, when events are scheduled on the same day
or night or on Board Meeting nights, it makes it very difficult to be in
attendance.
Dr. Salazar ~ Dr. Salazar participated in a student forum at Norte Vista High
School and a large part of their comments related to the Strategic Plan is that
they felt the committee created for strategic planning was unified and signifies
to them that we plan to implement this plan on a long term basis. Dr. Salazar
enjoyed his dialogue with the students. Dr. Salazar attended the Parent
University Graduation at Terrace Elementary School. Dr. Salazar asked the
Board to mark their calendars for Friday, May 16, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. to
celebrate Day of the Teacher at Stokoe Elementary School. Dr. Salazar is also
working on a District wide meeting for all staff to be held during the summer at
the Riverside Convention Center. There will be more information in the near
future on this event.
The meeting adjourned to Closed Session at 9:30 p.m. with action expected
