From the Alum PresidentDear Clovia Sisters,It has been a banner year for Clovia with many exciting things happening for the alums and girls. I would like to extend a special thank you to each of you for all you have done to make it all possible. When I think of Clovia alums, I like to think of each of you as the extra special ingredient in a recipe. Just as the different ingredients in a recipe blend together to make something delicious, each of your contributions blend together to continue the strong bonds of friendship and memories that Clovia provides. Just as each ingredient plays its special role to make the recipe a success, so it is with each of you. All of you bring special talents and gifts to the alumni association to make it the success it continues to be. It has been exciting to see the involvement of alums from across the United States. Even though it may not be possible for many members to travel to Manhattan to help with house functions such as the move-in day reception, hospitality weekend barbeque for potential new members or clearing out the kitchen for the remodeling, they have contributed by providing funds for the renovation and by paying the annual $25 sponsorship which supports the activities. Another example of that involvement is the donations of kitchen items through the gift registries. That is just a short list of all the activities that the alums have been involved in this year. No matter how far you live from Manhattan, or if you are young or old, your involvement is important and valued. Thank you for continuing to pay the $25 annual sponsorship (see page 4). This allows us to continue to support the ongoing activities which are included in this report.Much has happened this past year that we can be proud of as Clovia Alums. A highlight of the year was the announcement of the renovation work on the kitchen that is being completed this summer. We extend a special thank you to Ann Kock and Kelli Cox for co-chairing the campaign and the other alums serving on the committee with them. And a special thank you to all of you who supported the project with contributions. Even with this success, the need for support is ongoing. We look forward to continuing the improvements and providing regular maintenance to the house with a fund established for that purpose. We are proud of an amazing past and a promising future as a home away from home for former 4-H girls attending Kansas State University. Clovia has a rich heritage of members who have accomplished much as leaders in their chosen fields, and for creating bonds of life-long friendships.

Alpha Alums currently serving two-year terms as national officers are: President – Bernadette Trieb and Secretary – Carolyn Olson. They will complete their terms following the 2014 Clovia National Meeting. We appreciate their willingness to serve in this capacity. Each year we look for alums interested in filling national offices. Please consider this opportunity and let me or another board member know if you’re interested. The 2014 annual meeting will be hosted by the Beta Chapter in St. Paul, MN, on April 5. Information concerning the meeting will be sent through the Clovia listserve. It would be great to have as many Alpha Alums attend as possible. We have many talented and dedicated alums serving on the board. They are always more than willing to share their time and talents for the good of Clovia. The current board members are Diane Taylor, Brenda Miesner, Nancy Rezac, Bernadette Trieb, Gail Eyestone, Jana Patton, Beth Stuewe, DeAnn Hauser, Sara Roberts, Janet Elliott, Heather Mentzer and me. Jana Patton, Beth Stuewe and Gail Eyestone continue in the role of alum advisors. One of the three alum advisors attends the Wednesday evening dinners and meetings and is available for other functions. This requires an extensive time commitment and we really appreciate the leadership they provide to the girls. Alums assisted the alum advisors with sponsoring one snack during finals week each semester. The alums provided fruit pizzas for the spring semester final-week study break, and last December the girls were treated with cookies they got to decorate themselves. A good time was enjoyed by all participating. The alum board organized a new officer orientation/training, which was held Feb. 17 at the home of Gail Eyestone. Alum board members volunteered to work with officers and mentor them throughout their terms of office. Pizza was provided and Nancy Rezac, alum board member, developed a fun and informative activity to provide discussion on how to be an effective leader in Clovia. Each alum board member present told who they were accountable to on a daily basis. The Clovia Alums once again provided assistance during move-in day. The alums had the opportunity to meet the girls and their families and provided refreshments to all attending. The alums always look forward to hosting a dinner at Vista Drive-In for the Clovia Active Chapter Officers during move-in activities. Several board members attended this year and we enjoyed getting to know the officers for the 2013-2014 school year.

The alums hosted the annual Scholarship Dinner on Jan. 27 at the Little Apple Brewery. Forty-seven girls qualified to attend by achieving a 3.3 or higher GPA in either or both the spring and fall 2012 semesters. We are proud of the high academic achievements of the girls. Good work!

Parent/alum relations continue to be a priority. An alum board member has met with the Clovia Parent’s Association Officers, and alum board members attended the Clovia Parent Club Fall meeting. . As you can see, it has been a full year of activities. Please feel free to contact me at anytime if you have questions or concerns concerning the Clovia Alumni Chapter. I would love to hear from you. Thanks to all of you for being a part of our special sisterhood and for your dedication to carrying the Clovia tradition onward. I feel honored to serve as President of an organization with outstanding members who share a passion for Clovia. Sincerely,Ann SparkeAlpha of Clovia Alumni Board President

A group of Clovia alums (and spouses) prepared a Wednesday night dinner at the Clovia house on April 24. Pictured above are Judy Wagner, Karolyn and Ron Tacha, Becky Shaw Swartz, Diane Taylor, Linda Obermueller Maguire, Doris Merrill, and Ann and J.R. Sparke. The activity was organized by Karolyn Tacha. It was so much fun and brought back many wonderful memories we are planning to do it again on September 25 in the new kitchen. Watch for more information on the Clovia listserve.

President’s Message, continued

Dessert pizza provided by alums again treated the girls at the study break last spring.

Congratulations Clovia Alumnae! You’ve done it again. Yes, we have met and exceeded our campaign goal. The goal was to raise $500,000 as part of the 4-H Foundations’ Growing Kansas Leaders campaign. As of August 12 we have raised $660,974 in donations and pledges, including deferred gifts and estate planning. If you have made a pledge don’t forget to fulfill it; we are counting on it.For this campaign we needed to completely renovate the bathrooms and the kitchen, which had not been done since the house opened in 1967. Both projects have been accomplished! The bathrooms were completed last summer and the kitchen this summer. With that said, we want to celebrate our accomplishment and recognize all donors. Tentatively, this celebration is being planned for spring 2014 at the annual Senior Event where we induct our new alumnae. Usually, this is planned for the last weekend in April or first weekend in May. Look for details of the date, time and place in the coming months and keep these dates open to be Manhattan to celebrate with your sisters who have also given so generously! If you have given more than $500 to this campaign, you will be honored with your name on a plaque to be displayed at the house. The levels of giving that will be recognized on the plaques are as follows: Talisman, $10,000 and above; Coral, $9,999 - $5,000, Green $4,999 - $1,000 and White, $999 - $500. The plaque will be displayed with the other donor plaque and be up for viewing in the spring.Thank you again for a job well done. It is a pleasure to be able to ask and receive! Campaign Donors, continued THANKS TO ALL By Nancy Rezac, Treasurer Thank you to all those who were Clovia financial sponsors this year. Your $25 sponsorships and other donations have allowed the alum board to do a lot for Clovia. Not only was the kitchen worn out, but so were many of the contents. We asked the ladies at the house for a needs and wish list then appropriated much of our treasury to replacing and adding those items. The gift registry idea worked well as many alums and Clovia parents purchased everything on the list. We have received a lot of cooperation on every front from those near and far. We were able to sell the old kitchen appliances and shelves and the $1,300 proceeds were contributed to the renovation project. House President Audrey Gritten said about the new kitchen items: "I am so excited to see all of the improvements to the kitchen, especially, all of the new utensils and equipment. It is going to be so nice to have new pans, spatulas and other items. We are so thankful for all of the work that our alums and the 4-H Foundation have done to make this happen. Thanks!" In addition to the kitchen project we've had wonderful donations for every special event we have had with the house members. The next fiscal year will begin October 1. Your $25 sponsorships for 2013-2014 should be sent to Nancy Rezac between October 1 and January 1, 2014, so we can plan next year's budget. You also can pay online at www.alphaofcloviaalumni.org and click on Pay Annual Dues. Online sponsorships are $27. Be aware that a percentage is taken out by PayPal for its services, so if you donate a large amount online, Clovia will not receive all of your donation. Send your annual sponsorship contributions to: Nancy Rezac, P. O. Box 142, St. Marys, KS 66536 Send the following update form with your payment:

This past year in Clovia has been one of the best years of my college experience. We welcomed in 27 new members and 35 old members, giving us a full house. When we moved in we were all so excited to see the beautiful bathrooms that the 4-H Foundation and our Alums worked so hard to have renovated for us. Many girls commented that it was nice to be able to use a sink without it falling off of the wall, and other girls were excited about not having to call out "flushing" and "turning on" while using the bathrooms. Throughout the year we had several opportunities to get involved on and off of campus. A few activities included: volunteering at Manhattan's Triathalon, K-State's Homecoming (we received first place in the parade with our Homecoming partners), Turkey Trot and having one of our members participate in the Miss K-State Competition where she received second runner up. At semester we lost a few old members, but were able to welcome in three new sisters. Even this summer brought quite a bit of Clover activity. Several of our alums and members were able to attend Wilma Cook Creed's Celebration of Life dance that her family hosted in her honor. The celebration seemed to be a huge success. Two Clovers and I were able to trek 19.5 hours to Virginia to help Jessie Dean Thackrey celebrate her 100th birthday. It was truly amazing to meet one of the women that made our sisterhood possible. She sends all of her love back and said that she is looking forward to the next 100 years. I am really looking forward to see what this year has in store for us. We welcomed 18 new members this August and returned 44 old members to once again fill the house to maximum capacity. Along with all of our members we will also be welcoming back our housemother, Mom Alma, who will be there to offer her guidance and a variety of other wonderful skills; some of our favorites include her cooking and her gardening. All of us are suckers for her banana bread! We are all so looking forward to the new kitchen. Once again, it would not be possible for us to have such a beautiful house with these great updates without the support of our Alumni and the 4- H Foundation. So much has been accomplished in the last three years that I have been a member of Clovia, and I can only imagine what is in store for us in these next years! Clover love, Audrey Gritten

Make plans to attend the 2014 Clovia National Meeting in St. Paul, MN, April 5.

Who’s Who of Clovia

Clovia Who’s Who Award winners at the National Meeting: (left to right) Carmelita Goossen, Alpha Alum; Audrey Gritten, Alpha Active; Samantha Stephens, Beta Active; and Jancey Hall, Alpha Active.

Lana Clawson and Carmelita Goossen received the Alpha Alumnae Chapter recognition for Who’s Who in Clovia at the 2013 national meeting held in Manhattan. If you know of Clovia Alums who have accomplished much through their careers and service to their communities and the organization, please contact Ann Sparke with your suggestions.

On April 27, eleven girls – Tori Berndt, Bailey Bohn, Jade Comstock, Mary Hauser, Jancey Hall, Jessica Knickerbocker, Matti Kuykendall, Katie Price, Cassandra Mohrmann Row, Michelle Stork and Laura Unruh – were initiated and welcomed into the Clovia Alumni Association at a Senior Event hosted by the Clovia Alums at the Columbian Theatre in Wamego. The event replaced Senior Breakfast in an attempt to make the scheduling more convenient for the girls to attend. Thank you to the committee for organizing a fun and meaningful event complete with great food and a fun Clovia Trivia Jeopardy game.

Pictured are new alumni Bailey Bohn, Jade Comstock, Michelle Stork, Matti Kuykendall, Torey Berndt, Cassandra Row, Mary Hauser, Laura Unruh, Katie Price and Jancey Hall.

The photo above shows a group of alums who assisted with the Hospitality Weekend Cookout at Pottawatomie State Lake on April 13. Assisting were Laura Boroughs, Katie Hancock, Janet & Norm Elliott, and Ann & J.R. Sparke. Hospitality Weekend provides prospective members the opportunity to become familiar with college life at Clovia and to interview for membership into Clovia. This year there were 33 applicants for 18 available openings.
