3Dear friends,

It is always a great pleasure for me to present to you the various activities conducted by the Alliance Française in Kathmandu in the pedagogical & cultural fields. As you will discover, this new issue of Alliance Baza{a}r is full of projects, initiatives taken by our institution and our partners. While temperature and humidity rise with the monsoon, our events for the two coming months will be refreshing for your mind.

So, we propose the book launch of Manjushree Thapa's new book, "The country is yours", which contains the work of 49 Nepali writers and poets of the post 1990 era writing in the Nepali language as well as in regional mother tongues. What a privilege for us to be involved in contemporary Nepali literature and to welcome Manjushree Thapa in our garden.

The focus of media attention and the Nepali cinematographic field, after its selection at the Cannes and Ahmedabad festivals: Deepak Rauniyar's movie, "Threshold". If you expect a traditional screening on that occasion, you are wrong… I heard that Kutumba's musicians would be around…

Stay tuned to the International Art exhibitions organized by the Siddhartha Art Gallery. You could see international artists, from France as well, with the works of Anne Lelong & Karl Knapp.

Of course come and join us in our French courses at Alliance, in a friendly environment to learn and to open up to the intercultural dialogue. Since the last 2 sessions, we recorded more than 400 students per session which confirms that the need for French continues to develop in Nepal.

This issue is also the opportunity for me to say goodbye to the exceptional AFK team and its network of partners. After these 2 years, I feel glad and proud to hand over the AFK direction to my colleague Elise Tassin.

Elise will start as the new Director from beginning of September, and I thank you in advance for the great welcome I know you will offer her.

Finally, I would like to thank each of you for your constant support, your generosity and your efforts that gave us the possibility to offer all these cultural and pedagogical activities, with or without fireworks!

With all my best regards and of course, Bijaya Dashami tatha Dipawali ko hardik mangalmaya Subhakamana !

{Event}

The Alliance Française in Kathmandu is very pleased to invite you, presenting you our house of image and sound for a special evening.

Come & discover "short film with live music" / Movie-ConcertWith the screening of Threshold (Chaukaith)

Short film by Deepak Rauniyar and Kutumba playing live soundtrack

You probably have already seen some Kutumba's concert, and you have heard about Deepak Rauniyar's films. But have you already seen a movie in which the music is play on live, during the screening, just next to you ? Well, this is the perfect occasion to enjoy at the same time : cinema and live music !

An evening which will be marked by the meeting between 2 art forms and the exchange between people. More than just an artistic performance, you will also have the chance to:- attend this movie-concert;- mingle with the artists and have an open discussion with Deepak Rauniyar about his movie;- enjoy a Kutumba's concert to conclude this evening.

Threshold (Chaukaith) - A Deepak Rauniyar film'Threshold' reflects a changing Nepal after the peace process where everyone is asking each other how the state can be restructured. The film raises the same question, but in a more intimate and domestic context - one in which a woman searches for her identity and a life outside the confines of the family home. Threshold was selected at the Cannes (France) and awarded Special Jury Prize in Ahmedabad (India) festivals in 2009 and was awarded 3rd best film during the KIMFF 2008. Congrats !

Kutumba - research, preservation and celebration of the diversity in Nepali music as they find themselves negotiating an identity that struggles not only with hormones but national politics as well as global cultures packaged attractively by television and other media, Kutumba feels now is a good time to reach out to young Nepalis and encourage them to find respect through the energy and beauty of our unique music art forms. They just released their new album, the fourth one, called "Mithila", a special dedication to the Janakpur city.

Feel free to come !

Whoever wishes to learn French and whatever the reason (professional, pleasure ...), come to the Alliance française to study in a friendly atmosphere.

Enjoy understanding and speaking this beautiful and useful language. Our teachers will help you to progress from the basis to the the advanced levels through various activities in lively classes.

At the Alliance Française in Kathmandu, we have chosen a rhythm of 50 hours per session, in order to settle a step by step learning pace of the required skills and knowledge. There are 14 levels, following the program of the three Connexions French books.

We also use the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages to describe the level and progress of our students in accordance with a largely used and recognized scale of language proficiencies. According to the six levels of proficiency defined by the Council of Europe, students are then able to reach level A1 (Breakthrough level) after three sessions, A2 (Survival level) after 6 or 7 sessions, and B1 (the first stage of Independent User) after 12 sessions.

You can start the classes from any point: if you are not a beginner, you will just have to take a test before admission to check which level matches your proficiency.

13 {Le Bistrot}

Literally "Le Bistrot" refers to the zinc of the surface you have a drink on; figuratively it’s the counter (comptoir), the bar, the establishment itself.

"The Bistrot" has the purpose of mending the relationships between human beings and the environment, valorizing the territory to offer a menu that brings together taste and conscious choice.

So, if you are looking for diversity and atmosphere, as Arletty said in the classic movie "Hotel du Nord", for a place to feel at ease, well here you are: stone’s throw from the top of the world, "Le Bistrot" of the Alliance Française in Kathmandu (led by Ingrid Chiron) proposes you a creative and refined food with a perfect combination of freshness and delicacy.

"Le Bistrot" is proving to be the ideal place to relax, to have a chat with friends, to meet people and to do this so French experience of “la table”.

And if you don't have time to stay for the lunch, just come to relax for a moment with a delicious ice-tea or to enjoy a table soccer game with your friends!
