and welcome to the Christmas/New Year edition.

Have you done all your Christmas shopping yet? I always like to be organised well in advance, which is a far cry from my younger days when everything was very much last minute! We are lucky to live in an area with an abundance of local shops, restaurants and salons – all offering a delightful array of gift ideas and vouchers. If you can support local businesses whenever possible, in turn you’ll be contributing to the strength of our local economy.

As we near the end of another year, I’d like to pass on my thanks to you for continuing to read this little magazine and once again a massive “thank you” to my fabulous team of distributors & distribution coordinators who work so hard (in all weather conditions) to ensure you receive your regular copy of All Things Local.

The regular Prize Crossword is in its normal spot on page 6. Many thanks to the newly-opened Ravello Italian Fine Dining Restaurant for providing a 2 course Sunday Lunch for 2 people.

I’ll see you all again next year and wish you all a happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year!

Bye for now.

PC Tips from your ‘Local’ Computer Tutor

Nuisance Phone Calls

Recently I had a call asking if I wanted to stop Nuisance Phone Calls. You can imagine my answer was YES! I assumed it was going to be the Telephone Preference Service although I had already registered our number with them. It wasn’t from them and as we say ‘never assume’. It was a company telling me I could pay for the service; with the mention of money I knew it had to be a scam. My clients are finding the same types of calls referring to their computers, saying they can help if they have any problems.

My advice is, if you haven’t called them for help do not allow them access into your computer remotely nor to your credit card details.

Andrew Newton, Solicitor in Shacklocks LLP’s Medical Negligence Team, discusses how Shacklocks can help if you feel let down by medical professionals who have treated you or a loved one.

Many of us will need medical treatment of some kind during our lifetime and when we do, we place our trust in the medical professionals responsible for our care. On most occasions everything will go well, but if you or a loved one have suffered as a result of poor care from doctors, hospital staff, or other healthcare professionals you may have grounds for a claim for medical negligence.

The first step

In most cases, the first step is to make a complaint under the appropriate complaints procedure. You will no doubt have many questions about the treatment received and the complaint process can often be a chance to have those questions answered.

What happens during the complaint process can be fundamental to later pursuing a claim and so we recommend obtaining advice at the earliest opportunity. We can help at this very first stage to ensure that your claim gets off to the strongest start.

What happens next?

In order to pursue a claim for medical negligence

there must be evidence that the care received fell below that which could reasonably be expected and that you have suffered as a result. In some cases, the professionals involved in your care may admit this during the course of the complaints process, but in most cases it will be necessary to obtain an expert opinion from an independent medical professional, which we will arrange.

If the independent expert is supportive of your case, we will proceed to fight the case on your behalf, in most cases on a ‘no win no fee’ basis, with a view to obtaining compensation for your pain and suffering and for any financial loss you have incurred, such as lost earnings. If you still require further treatment at that stage, we can often also help to arrange that for you, getting you back on the road to recovery as quickly as possible.

Andrew Newton, medical negligence Solicitor at Shacklocks said “There are strict time limits for pursuing a claim and so it is important to seek advice quickly and from a specialist medical negligence solicitor. You can rest assured that our Medical Negligence Team has the knowledge and expertise to guide you through the claim process.”

If you are concerned about medical treatment you have received, or you feel that a loved one was let down by a medical professional, contact Andrew Newton, Solicitor and accredited Senior Litigator member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers for a free initial consultation on 01773 822333 or email [email protected]

Legal Matters: Let down by a medical professional? We’re here to help…

[knowledge+application]

www.shacklocks.co.uk

BUSINESS & PROFESSIONALLegal Matters Shacklocks Solicitors

In each edition legal advisors from Shacklocks deal with important legal topics. This month Marion Vesey (pictured) invites us to think about making a decision that will benefit future generations.

Making a Will is a serious business. It is a time which gives many people cause to stop and think about how they want to be remembered when they are gone.

Many people are attracted by the idea of doing something to help others less fortunate than themselves after they pass away, particularly if their family are adequately provided for or if they have no close family. Whilst some still like the idea of supporting major national charities, there are many who prefer to benefit more local causes or causes close to their heart, possibly where they have had a personal involvement or received support during their lifetime.

Something that our team will discuss with clients in this situation is the idea of setting up their own charitable trust which can continue to provide support for charitable causes of their choosing long after they have passed away. Creating your own charity means that your trustees can provide support to those who need help most. There can be a great sense of satisfaction in knowing that your trustees will carry out your wishes after you have gone and that your name will be associated with such good deeds even after you are no longer around.

At Shacklocks we have set up a number of charitable trusts over the 150 years or so we have been in business and we still look after those trusts today. One of the charitable trusts we look after, for example, was established by a will in the 1940’s to provide accommodation for elderly residents.

70 years later the trust is still providing that accommodation.

Another of the trusts we look after was set up by a client who wanted to help people with particular medical conditions. Her kindness has enabled her trustees to provide financial support to a gifted young musician who has experienced a number of health issues that have interfered with her education, to enable that child to be educated in the most appropriate environment.

A Charitable Trust can be set up either during your lifetime with savings and investments built up already, or alternatively through a specially prepared Will that will only take effect following your death and will therefore not deprive you of capital or income during your lifetime.

Our team at Shacklocks have a particular speciality in preparing arrangements of this kind and also of acting as professional trustees to enable wishes to be fulfilled and instructions to be followed.

If you are thinking of supporting charities through your Will or during your lifetime with a lump sum, why not talk to us about the different ways in which we can help you benefit those good causes, and how to make the most of the tax rules that enable a charitable cause to benefit.

Call us at Shacklocks to talk about how we can help you to help your favourite local causes.

Telephone Shacklocks on 0845 602 2344 or email me at [email protected].

Business & Professional

As another year ends we can reflect on the past and consider our future. Time stands still for no man, especially for the Chancellor, George Osborne. 2014 has been a landmark year for pension reform with significant changes that will affect us all.The Budget in March delivered a positively shocking change to how we may use our pension funds, effectively unlocking retirement funds to be drawn in whichever shape you want.

Prior to the revelations, historically in Britain we retired and bought a form of annuity with our pension fund. Once the annuity was purchased, that was that. The rate and type of annuity you bought was a binding decision and that annuity would pay a lifetime income until you passed away.

Osborne delivered the news that pension investors in investment-linked schemes could, with effect from April 2015, draw the funds down from their pension fund without ever committing to buying an annuity, even as a lump sum. The key was offering levels of flexibility not seen previously in the pension environment. Talk of taking your pension fund and treating yourself to a new Lamborghini at retirement littered the newspapers, but then the dust settled. The industry and public reflected.

Drawing the pension in such extravagant ways needed to be considered more closely. Typically, only the first 25% of the fund was tax free. The remaining 75% would be taxable at your highest rate of income tax. For some, 45% of their pot could be lost through paying tax to the ‘generous’ Mr Osborne.

Money Matters:A Year of Change

But what if you had bought the Lamborghini? Could you continue to afford the petrol to run it? The new flexibility means that ensuring the pension fund does not run dry before you pass this mortal coil could prove a very tricky budgeting and balancing act. More than ever, you will need to monitor the fund as you drawdown your retirement income. So perhaps an annuity may still be attractive as they guarantee not to run out before you do!

Then in October, Osborne announced another highly attractive bombshell meaning the tax payable upon death for pension funds already in drawdown was to be abolished (currently 55% income tax). Pension drawdown as a retirement option looked even more attractive as it would enable people to pass on their unused pension funds to family members if they passed away prior to aged 75.

And so, to 2015. Choosing the right option at retirement with your hard-earned pension fund looks even more important than ever. Something to think about as you enjoy Christmas, and thoughts for the New Year!

A pair of hybrid chickens, Sweet Pea (Rhode Island/Maran) and Pepperami (Rhode Island/Plymouth Rock), hardly qualifies as a flock. Even so, two eggs a day, almost every day, soon leads to an eggcess. And, while neighbours sometimes buy a box of four, and other times we swap them or give them away (eggs, not neighbours), our ethos is to try and make use of whatever we have.

Unfortunately, unlike Anne, I have always been a fussy eater (the sort of child who made mealtimes an endurance test for everyone). I’ll gladly eat an egg boiled, fried (preferably hard, not runny) or poached (preferably in a tent in Norfolk). Omelettes, though, leave me cold, as do soufflés. While just the thought of an egg custard makes me want to gag - well done, school dinners, circa 1978.

Clearly, a little inventiveness* was called for. Many homemade cakes are suitable for freezing, and who isn’t partial to a piece of farmhouse or carrot cake. And it’s a great way to use up surplus carrots.

Mayonnaise proved to be so easy that even I could do it, with just egg yolk, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and water. Take a tip from me though - make sure it is salt and not white pepper. Anyhow, once I had mayonnaise under my belt, literally, somehow, my ambitions grew.

Remember when egg shampoo was all the rage? Well, no need to shell out when you’ve eggs to spare - just add olive oil and water (note to self: find a way to grow own olives). You too can have that silky sheen in no time - it helps if you still have plenty of hair. Do note that rinsing with water that’s too hot will cook the egg and render you fascinating to passing horses.

When we ran out of mundane career choices for an egg, Anne brought out the big guns - in the form of a battered Home Management guide she’d rescued from a car boot sale. Egg whites will bring a shine back to leather and, apparently, stiffened egg whites can tackle greasy marks on leather furniture. Not that we have any to practice on.

Anne was all for trying an eggy face pack - on me. I wasn’t too sure how well that would work with a beard though.

Eggshells are very useful in the garden, as a good source of calcium. They can either be ground up and put in the chickens’ grit, or added to the compost bin for the soil. I’m also reliably informed that eggshells are a great defence

against slugs and snails, but our molluscs must have developed superpowers.

I tried valiantly to muster support for a village egg-rolling event, but it proved only marginally less popular than my unseasonal painted egg hunt. In the end, I painted a few faces on the shells and stuck them on the garden fence, as an anti-killjoy device. The jackdaws didn’t quite know what to make of them, but the killjoys were kept at bay. Next time we have a surplus, Anne wants to try making Scotch eggs.

By the time you read this, the days will be both shorter and colder. On days like these, I like to go out a bit later when the streets are aired and be home before dark.

That being so, something a bit shorter might be called for. Chesterfield is the destination but as usual, it’s all about getting there. As always, bus pass holders travel free. I will cover tickets for paying passengers toward the end to show where savings can be made.

We start then with our old friend Trent Barton’s ‘The Sixes’ from Belper Bus Station to Derby Bus Station. These are every quarter of an hour starting on the hour.

Our next bus is Trent Barton’s ‘Black Cat’ from Bay 4. This leaves on the half hour and will take you via Ilkeston, Heanor, and Sutton-in-Ashfield to Mansfield. Arrival there should be an hour and fifty minutes later. It is a longish journey but I think passengers will be surprised at the attractive scenery found along the way.

Mansfield Bus Station is only just over a year old and in my view is one of the better ones built in recent years. You might decide to take a break in Mansfield. It is only a few minutes’ walk into the town centre.

The next bus is Stagecoach’s ‘Pronto’ service to Chesterfield. This is a joint service with Trent Barton and leaves from Bay L every half hour starting on the hour. Fifty minutes later and you will be in Chesterfield. The stop is at the top of the coach station and it is only a short walk across the road, up the escalator, into the town centre.

The return to Ripley is on the ‘Red Arrow’, which leaves Chesterfield at 20 past and ten to the hour from stand B14. (If you went into town, you walked past it). Cross the road at the Ripley stop and The Sixes will take you back to Belper at 3 and 33 minutes past the hour.

Ticketing: A Trent Barton Zig Zag ticket will cover The Sixes, the Black Cat and Red Arrow. Pronto requires a separate ticket.

People who might be interested in the buses used are invited to try my transport blog on http://railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

Days out with DennisGo by Bus? Why Not??

Readers might remember my previous article on this topic which appeared in All Things Local earlier this year.

I explained that I was involved with a petition to ‘persuade’ the politicians to come clean and tell us what their intentions are before next year’s General Election rather than after. I invited readers to contact me to add their names to the petition. A number of you did so, contributing several hundreds to my total of 1,100 and to the national total of 152,347.

It was decided to present the petition before the start of the Party Political Conference season when the various parties would be formulating their policies before next year’s General Election. On September the 10th, West Midlands Councillor Richard Worrall accompanied by Wirral South MP Alison McGovern and Walsall North MP David Winnick, plus other delegates, presented the petition at No. 10 Downing Street.

Many thanks to all of you who supported me, but the petition goes on. If you can help raise more signatures, contact me on 01773 747665 or email [email protected].

Glancing at the map of Africa, it’s easy to miss the Gambia. Tucked on the bulge of the western coast, it is the smallest country on the mainland, barely 30 miles across at its widest point, stretching along the lower section of the Gambia river. This mere ribbon of land is surrounded by Senegal on three sides but claims a fine coastal strip where the river meets the Atlantic ocean.

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of independence for one of Africa’s most stable states, no longer part of the Commonwealth but still using English as its official language, at least for the time being. Add the promise of winter sun, just six hours away and no jetlag, and it’s no wonder the Gambia has proved popular with British tourists.

Imagine soft tingling sands, swaying palms, warm waters, a cool sea breeze sweeping the shore, the perfect picture postcard whether one opts for quiet beaches or the popular Senegambia strip with its fruit stalls, thatched restaurants and savvy ‘bumsters’ selling African beads, wood carvings, sea shells and cashew nuts. It’s friendly, colourful and most exciting when a small fleet of dug-out canoes

appears on the horizon, riding the crest of the waves, and everyone rushes down to the beach to help pull in the fishing nets. There’s much bargaining and sorting out on the sand, red snapper, bonga, cat fish, calamari and more, before the men head for home with whatever is left for the family’s supper.

Broad sands cover much of the shore, secluded coves hide here and there, framed by rocks and cliffs, and when the sun sets all red and gold over the ocean, myriad tropical birds twitter in the trees. It’s a magical moment.

But there is more to the Gambia than sand and sea. Banjul, the capital, has a lively market brimming with fancy footwear, frilly clothes, batik, knobbly tomatoes and bags of ice cold water. Tailors compete for business, babies bob on their mother’s back and tourists climb up to the balcony for a bird’s eye view of the nearby streets. Meanwhile, others seek out the Gambia’s UNESCO heritage, from Kunta Kinteh island and related sites, highlighting European encounters and the slave trade, to the stone circles of Senegambia, a vast cross-border area with a sacred landscape dating back 1500 years.

As for nature lovers, the Gambia is a dream. You may not find the ‘Big Five’ of eastern or southern Africa but this tiny country manages seven nature reserves and national parks, home to monitors and crocodiles, endangered monkeys, pretty butterflies such as the dark blue pansy or citrus swallowtail, and 576 species of birds, in wetlands, forest and along the shore. Highlights include watching the sun rise over the mangrove when nothing disturbs the peace but the gentle paddle of traditional canoes.

A bird calls, a kingfisher dives in a flash of colour and soon the dawn chorus rises all around, parakeets, sunbirds, sanderlings, drongos, black egrets and many more. A golden light spreads across the creek, oyster shells glisten on the mangrove roots and the canoes drift in silence in this quiet country basking on the banks of its namesake river. According to legend, Gambia means ‘place of the king’, a glorious name for the smallest nation on the African mainland.

It’s that time of year again! Christmas is well and truly upon us and along with it, the overwhelming consideration of what to get for whom. Now, I know that every year some media poll will spill out endless festive facts and figures on how much we are spending and how every year the expectation on the quantity of gifts goes up. Inevitably someone will pipe up with, ‘It was never this bad in my day’. I was inclined to agree, until I got to thinking where this increasingly monstrous need to give more and more began. I think actually it began ‘back in the day’.

You only have to look at the much favoured carol, ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’. By my calculations the person cited in the song gave 78

gifts (79 for anyone including the pear tree) to his true love. I doubt anyone has the need, let alone the room, for that many gifts. I’d be quite fine with the 5 gold rings and may even push to housing 2 turtle doves in the festive spirit, but I’d draw the line at 10 leaping Lords and nobody’s got the patience for 12 drummers drumming no matter how many mulled wines you’ve had!

So really, whenever this idea began that we have to show our loved ones how much they mean to us by giving bigger and better presents every year, it needs to stop. Give the one thing that truly is priceless – your time. It will be appreciated far more than 6 geese-a-laying, I can tell you! Merry Christmas.

Tucked away in The Courtyard, opposite Belper’s Market Place, is an absolute gem of a boutique for anyone who loves clothing and accessories. Lynda Piggott opened The White Island Boutique a year ago, fuelled by her own passion for clothes. “I’ve got a place in Ibiza, and I loved the fabulous clothing that I could get out there. I often received compliments on items I had bought, so I began bringing things back. I loved finding and buying beautiful pieces so much that I started to think about opening a shop and at the same time the Courtyard premises became available. That was a year ago, and I’ve never looked back!”

Although Lynda has no previous retail experience, she has an obvious natural flare. The shop may be small but it’s beautifully laid out with eye catching garments displayed with complementary accessories at every turn. “I like to give the shop my personal touch!” she explains. Lynda is happy for customers to browse or try on as many items as they like. “I’m never pushy; I’d much rather customers spent a while looking and trying things on. When they find the perfect item that makes them look and feel great it’s really special.”

Lynda only stocks one or two of each item, and with new deliveries every week there’s always something new to see.

“I have regular customers who come from miles around because they love the unique style that I offer; you can pick up something really individual for a fraction of designer prices. Often people try things they would never have thought of before and fall in love with them! It’s all about finding what’s right for you.”

The clothing and accessories in The White Island Boutique come from Ibiza, Italy and Paris and offer excellent value for money as well as unmistakable European style. They combine beautiful fabrics, stylish finishes and incredible attention to detail. “They’re really show-stopping clothes” says Lynda.

New winter ranges are now in stock, with beautiful furs and faux furs, bright winter colours, and stunning accessories including sterling silver jewellery from local designer ‘Ripple’ as well as eye-catching costume jewellery that will really make a statement during the party season.

The shop is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays so pop in to browse the truly unique range. One visit and you’ll be hooked!

I was delighted to host an Over 55s Fair in October at St Peter’s Church in Derby City centre. It was extremely well attended and I hope that those who visited found the Fair useful.

I was keen to host this event as I am often contacted by people in this age group who are seeking advice on different matters but who are unsure how to get in touch with these organisations. I therefore decided that it would be useful to provide information on a range of matters all under one roof.

There were twenty organisations exhibiting, including the University of the 3rd Age, Willows Sports Centre, Nordic Walking, Derby Quad, Derbyshire Active and Deda who were offering information on hobbies, interests and being active. Derbyshire Fire and Rescue provided advice on safety in the home and the Icare group offered information on meals on wheels and brought along sample meals for people to try.

There was also advice on Alzheimer’s, beating bowel cancer and the Silver Star Diabetes Mobile Unit came along and undertook free diabetic testing.

Over the last few months, many of you have been in touch with me regarding the Amber Valley Borough Council’s decision to include areas of land for development on Kedleston Road and two areas of land in Belper, Bullsmoor and Derwent Street, in their Core Strategy. Fortunately, the Council did not approve two additional sites that had been proposed,

Cherry House Farm and Pottery Farm in Belper. It should be noted, however, that this does not prevent a developer submitting a planning application and if this was the case, and you wished to object, you would need to make a representation to Amber Valley Borough Council at the appropriate time. The amended Core Strategy document identifying Bullsmoor, Derwent Street and Kedleston Road will be submitted to the Inspector in February for final approval when you will again have the opportunity to make a representation if you wish. The Kedleston Voice action group have been working hard to prevent the Kedleston Road development from going ahead and local groups such as Protect Belper, Transition Belper and the Belper Civic Forum have also been campaigning hard, together with local residents, against these developments. I would like to emphasise that, whilst I appreciate there is a need for additional housing, I feel that brownfield sites should be developed wherever possible so that we can retain our beautiful countryside. I therefore intend to write to the Secretary of State to ask him to ‘call-in’ any planning applications that are submitted and I will continue to offer my full support to local residents on this matter.

Finally, do not forget to keep an eye on my website for further events in the future www.paulinelatham.co.uk or please email me if you would like to sign up to my newsletter [email protected]. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas.

More than 100,000 people in the UK have Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a currently incurable disease that affects the central nervous system. MS is complex, and has many symptoms. Most people won’t experience them all, certainly not at the same time. Symptoms might include fatigue, vision problems and difficulties with walking, but MS is different for everyone. The Multiple Sclerosis Society fights to improve treatment and care to help people with MS take control of their lives and funds research to help beat MS for good.

The Derby and District Multiple Sclerosis Activity Centre, located on Jubilee Business Park in Derby, is one of six drop-in activity centres in the UK and is therefore essential in efforts to help fight Multiple Sclerosis. The purpose-built centre offers specialist exercise classes, physiotherapy, nursing, counselling and more. Many people find that some of the complementary therapies offered, such as reflexology, Reiki and massage help with reducing pain, improving sleep and well-being. The centre has recently undergone a refurbishment, courtesy of Derby College Students. As part of the National Citizen Service,

The Derby & District Multiple Sclerosis Activity Centre

students raised a remarkable total of £1,660.12 before decorating the centre to create a warm and welcoming environment. The centre now provides a comforting setting for both sufferers of MS and carers alike, with an aim to show that life with MS can still be enjoyable. Everyone is invited to go along and visit the centre for a drink and a chat with no appointment required! As part of its fundraising efforts, members of the Derby Society have this year been involved in a sponsored bike ride from North to South Derbyshire, a Grease themed film night at the QUAD and more recently a sponsored Firewalk where some members walked 20ft over hot coals to raise money! The centre always welcomes new volunteers and ideas, so please contact them if you would like to get involved. The “MS Tent on Tour” was running throughout summer 2014, with a pop up tent making an appearance at Oakwood Gala and Elvaston Steam Fair. This is something the centre will continue into 2015 as they inform local people about how the centre can help. The centre welcomes people from all ages and the variety of treatments has been adapted to suit all ranges of mobility. They really want to keep a smile on visitors’ faces and provide support to ensure that no one feels alone.

The Derby Centre is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 10am – 4pm. For more information or to book a Physio or therapy slot call 01332 611810 or email [email protected]. Alternatively, just pop in during opening hours for a chat. The address is Lilian Prime House, 7 Enterprise Way, Jubilee Business Park (off Stores Road), Derby, DE21 4BB. There will always be someone to greet you when you arrive.

Doing nothing sometimes seems very difficult for me. My head is busy buzzing with ideas or I am persistently planning what to do next.Recently, however, I was forced into a state of doing nothing. Having been inspired to begin an ‘amazing new project’ I opened up my trusty laptop ready to start and… nothing happened.

No comforting whirring as the computer cogs sprang to life, no helpful prompting to enter a password, just a blank screen. It refused to respond and did absolutely nothing. Not even a blinking light. I was given no option as to my course of action. I abandoned my plans and did nothing instead.

I had imagined that in a situation like this I would feel a surge of sadness, panic or maybe even anger, especially after all those times I’d wisely said to myself, “I really must remember to back up the computer,” then promptly ignored it. In fact – surprisingly – I felt an enormous sense of liberation!

I was free to do nothing.

After asking my computer geek friends whether it would ever come back as a laptop zombie I was stumped. I admit my computer knowledge is pretty limited. I’m not one for technology and people who have seen my ancient mobile phone will attest to this. By the way, a fifteen year old mobile is not old fashioned, it’s retro!

Knowing that it was impossible for me to achieve what I wanted to do ‘right now’ removed any stress. I would be unable to complete the ‘most perfect and amazing thing’ I had ever envisioned. However, the laptop had spoken (actually not even beeped) and this was absolutely fine. It was a message from the Universe that I didn’t need to be hectically trying to achieve the unattainable. Perhaps now is a time for doing nothing and I’m perfectly relaxed about that.

America has a National Nothing Day on January 16th. I’d be happy to adopt it as a national holiday. We could forget our to-do lists, deadlines and plans and have a day of relaxation and time to ‘be’ instead. We all have those days where we are busy working the whole day through and when we sit down at the end of it, feel like we have achieved absolutely nothing. If we start at nothing and achieve nothing by the end,

isn’t it better to cut out all that rushing around in the middle and be nicely rested as a result?

We have too many ‘something’ days. I’m having a ‘nothing’ day instead.

So although I didn’t see any lights in my laptop I did see the light of inspiration. In a flash I saw that all those unfinished – ‘I’ll get round to it someday’ - projects may have vanished into the computer ether forever. But it doesn’t matter in the big scheme of things really. In fact, I can’t remember what was on there anyway!

I’m far too busy having a day of wholeheartedly doing nothing and letting any cares melt away. If you feel like having a day of nothing perhaps you should consider using a bit of busy time to back up your computer first...

Food, Drink & Entertainment

I read a story in the Daily Mail yesterday.

Now, this could be an article on why reading the Daily Mail is something you should never do, but we don’t have six billion years to kill.

Instead I’d like to talk to you about my industry, the music industry, and the fact that people like to complain about it being ‘unfair’. The Daily Mail journalist had been granted exclusive access to the X Factor auditions - like a high-waisted Willy Wonka, Simon Cowell had finally opened up the wrought-iron gates of his Popstar Factory (although of course in this case he was the only creepy orange midget in sight).

The journalist described watching the many thousands of wide-eyed hopefuls being herded like cattle into a massive aircraft hangar where they were prodded unceremoniously into anonymous audition pods to perform for invisible TV producer underlings only to be mostly rejected outright, some after waiting twelve

hours for their moment. Only those who were extremely good-looking or plain mental made it through.

Know what I think of that? Big bloody whoop. I mean, heaven forfend you should have to spend slightly longer than an average working day queuing up for your chance to hop nimbly into literally the most coveted career on the planet. Your feet hurt? Deal with it. I know doctors who work 36 hours straight sewing people’s legs back on with barely a break for a sandwich, and they don’t expect a medal for it.

And yes, I know that should you make it through the demoralising selection process the odds of actually striking gold on the other side are still eye-wateringly small, but hey, if you don’t like small odds, you need to get out of the music industry.

Something else that hacks me off about these people is that they act as if going on a talent show is the only way in which you can ‘be a singer’. Well, if you’re stuck for ideas, here’s one - go out and sing. That’s all you have to do. Go out and sing, and keep on singing because you love it and because it’s brilliant, not because it means you might one day meet Kim Kardashian. For the love of Moses, you don’t have to be standing in front of Cheryl Cole and a bloated crowd of WKD-fuelled imbeciles baying for either your blood or the inevitable appearance of a button-nosed orphan with the voice of angel in order to be a musician. We live in a gloriously connected digital world where it’s never been easier to create and perform music, so next time you’re standing in front of the mirror with a hairbrush complaining that Cowell hasn’t turned you into the new Leona yet, question whether you really want it, or whether all you actually want is to be pictured in Hello magazine sitting on a throne kissing a poodle. A young musician recently asked me how my band played Wembley Stadium, and I replied: ‘Go home, pick up your guitar, work hard for ten years and maybe you’ll get lucky’. I didn’t mean it to be cynical; quite the opposite in fact. It’s an insane lottery, is music, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Surreal Panther is a Steel Panther tribute band that has taken the local area’s Glam Rock scene by storm. I’ve personally seen these guys perform a few times, and it’s quite an experience.

Being a fan of Steel Panther myself I had my reservations as to how well they could pull off the original band’s eccentric characteristics, but I was completely blown away by their electric performance, and controversial on-stage persona. Not only are they fantastic musicians, but they’re also all really great down-to-earth lads too. I caught up with three of the four band members, Jamie, Ben and Lee, to see what it’s really like to be in a tribute band.

How did forming a Steel Panther tribute band first come about?Ben: We all decided the Spice Girls tribute wasn’t going to work.Jamie: I was lying in bed one morning and thinking, I know a few guys who could pull this off as a tribute. It was audacious, but I’m glad we gave it a try!Lee: Jamie Fowkes is the man to blame; this is his love child!

How many times have you seen Steel Panther live, and have you ever met them?Ben: Seen them live 3 or 4 times. We once got the pleasure of meeting them at Rock City in Nottingham. It goes without saying, myself and Jamie were quite shy!Jamie: I win this one, I’ve seen them 9 times! It was an honour to meet them all, even if we could only smuggle me and Ben backstage that one time!Lee: I’ve seen them maybe 5 or 6 times now. I haven’t really met them yet, but we could also say they haven’t met us...

How do you all know each other?Ben: We all grew up in the same hostel. Lee might be my uncle...Jamie: I’ve known these guys for some years. Ben and I go back to our teenage years, in fact I still probably owe him money...Lee: Many years of playing with each other, and other local bands.

What do you all do when you’re not making music together?Ben: No comment.Jamie: We don’t so much call it making music as having fun; that seems to be the running theme of what we do on or off stage. We’re just four mates who are lucky enough to work well together like that.Lee: Make love.

What is the best part of being in a band?Ben: The best part of being in the band is the amount of fans we please! And also the amount of fans that please us too.Jamie: It’s license to have fun. It’s not a job, it’s just what you wanna do. We get to go on stage, have a few beers and see

Music Scene:Surreal Panther

people’s faces when we blast out the lyrics.Lee: Cause it’s too boring as a solo act!

Are there any perks to being a tribute band?Ben: There are a few perks to being in a tribute band! But none that spring to mind. Next question!Jamie: Yeah, we tend to get the same love and admiration at a show that the real band would get, it’s like the fans are already fans of ours before we even strike a note which is great. It makes it a whole lot easier when everyone in the room knows what you’re all about.Lee: The perks to being in this tribute is we are Steel Panther and there are no others, plus we wear wigs, tight leggings and make up – every man’s dream, right?

Anything else you would like to add?Ben: Keep safe and keep rocking!Jamie: Learn to play music kids, you won’t get to make money having this much fun doing anything else!Lee: I would like to add that we’ll all make millions by end of next year!

Food, Drink & Entertainment

Roasting the turkey in a ’tent’ of buttered foil will keep it moist and succulent. Always allow time for the cooked bird to rest in a warm place before carving.

Serves 8-10Ready in approx 4 ½ hours, plus resting time

Ingredients:100g butter1 tbsp olive oil1 leek, trimmed and chopped2 shallots, peeled and finely chopped75g ready to eat dried apricots, finely chopped150g fresh white breadcrumbs100g cooked chestnuts, finely chopped2 tbsp fresh thyme leaves5.4kg oven-ready turkey, giblets removed16 cocktail sausages 4 rashers smoked streaky baconFresh herbs, to garnish

Method:Heat half the butter and the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the leek and shallots for 6-7 minutes until softened. Remove from the heat and stir in the apricots, breadcrumbs, chestnuts and half the thyme leaves. Season

well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and leave to cool.

Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/gas 5. Line a large roasting tin with buttered foil. Use about one third of the stuffing mix to stuff the neck end of the turkey (press the rest of the stuffing in a shallow ovenproof

dish to cook separately). Weigh the stuffed turkey and calculate the cooking time - allow 20 minutes per 450g plus 20 minutes. Place the turkey in the lined roasting tin and smear all over the skin with the remaining butter. Sprinkle over the rest of the thyme leaves and season.

Cover the turkey with a tent of buttered foil and roast in the preheated oven for the calculated cooking time, basting occasionally. Uncover the turkey for the last

45 minutes until the skin is golden and the juices run clear when a skewer is inserted into the thickest part of one thigh. If the juices still run slightly pink return the turkey to the oven for a further 15-20 minutes then check again.

Leave the turkey, loosely covered with foil, in a warm place to rest for at least 20 minutes. Stretch the bacon rashers with the back of a knife and cut each rasher in

half. Wrap the short rashers around the cocktail sausages, securing with a cocktail stick. Place in baking tray and cook in the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden and cooked through. Drizzle a couple of spoonfuls of juices from the turkey over the stuffing in the dish and cook in the oven at the same time as the bacon-wrapped sausages for 20 minutes.

Serve the turkey on a large warmed platter with the bacon-wrapped sausages and garnished with fresh herbs. Serve the extra stuffing separately along

with all the usual festive vegetables.

For a quick gravy, simmer the roast turkey juices with a splash of red wine and a couple of spoonfuls of redcurrant jelly.

I find it hard to believe that a whole year has passed since I last sat down to write an article for the Christmas edition of the magazine, but pass it most certainly has.It has been an eventful year for our family in many ways. We had a very proud day in February when we were present to see my elder son pass out as a Royal Marines Commando. August brought another highlight in the shape of Jewels and I finally becoming man and wife after a very long time together and having both sons as witnesses at our wedding. Unfortunately, my Dad was in hospital and too ill to attend the ceremony. Two days later our Royal Marine left these shores for duty abroad.

What has this got to do with feet? Well, on Christmas Day, the very greatest gift will be the presence of two pairs of feet under our lunch table. One belonging to my Dad, recently returned from hospital, and the other recently returned from foreign shores.

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and that the feet under your table bring you great pleasure no matter how far they have travelled to be there. Merry Christmas to you all!

Walk Area: Ashbourne Distance: 5.25 Miles Start Point: Mapleton Lane Cycle HireOS Map: Explorer OL24 White Peak Area 1:25000Map Ref: SK 175 469 Parking: Pay and Display Tea Shops: One Duration: 2 Hours 50 Minutes

A fairly easy five and a quarter mile walk from Ashbourne out to Mapleton and then a stroll through Okeover Park before heading south across farmland to Upper Mayfield then down to Hanging Bridge across the River Dove. From Mayfield there is a stretch of field walking followed by a section along the road back into Ashbourne and St Oswald’s Church, before finishing off the walk with a trip through the former railway tunnel under the town back (complete with automated sound effects) to return to the walk’s start point.

The Walk

From the car-park on Mapleton Lane, walk north along the Tissington Trail past the refreshment kiosk and cycle hire, go down the dip across the stream then up through the gates ahead. Once at the far side of the dip, look for a footpath off to the left with a flight of steps down to a wooden step stile. Cross the stile and walk up the hill ahead to another step stile. Cross this stile too, then continue forward to take the path to the right of a five bar gate between the

hedgerow and a fenced-off paddock. On reaching a driveway, carry on in the same direction, this time between a caravan/camping site and the hedgerow. At the end of the hedgerow the path arrives at a rather rickety stock gate. Cross the field heading slightly right to a gated squeeze stile between two trees on the far side. Walk down the next field with the hedge to the right and pass through a farm vehicle gap where the hedge shifts a tractors width to the left; it’s a bit muddy here but stone blocks have been provided to allow easy passage over the mud. Turn right and walk across the top of the field to a well-worn step stile, then do the same again to reach another well used step stile with dog slide. Follow the path down across the next field, heading slightly to the left towards the rear of the buildings in the distance. On reaching the far side exit the field through a stock gate and through the churchyard down to the road.

Here there are two choices, turn left and take the path on the opposite side of the road across the adjacent field towards Okeover bridge, or turn right and take the lane on the left opposite the pub down to the bridge. There is a tradition here of people jumping from the bridge into the river on New Year’s Day then, cold and wet, running across the field to the pub! However you arrive at the bridge, cross it and enter into Staffordshire on the far side of the river. The map now suggests taking a stile to the left to enter Okeover Park, but having seen the size and state of the metal construction that is the stile I decided to walk a little further up the lane and cross the cattle grid into the park. Walk along the road through the parkland with views of Okeover Hall off to the right. Okeover Hall is the family seat of the Okeover family who have been in residence on the site since the reign of William Rufus (William II 1056-1100).

Leave the parkland across another cattle grid then continue up the country lane to a signposted footpath on the right along a rough driveway. At the point where the drive splits, bear right then head across the grass to another five-bar gate on the far side to the left of the house ahead. Go through the gate, then turn immediately to the left and walk across the bottom of this field and the next to arrive at a wooden step stile. On reaching the stile there were hares boxing in the next field, but on my arrival they disappeared into the field margins. Keeping the hedgerow to the left, cross the next two fields to arrive at another wooden step stile. Walk across the next field to the far side then head right into a sunken lane. At the top of the sunken lane, take the stile on the left beside some rusting metal farm gates then follow the narrower track up to join the A52 above Mayfield.

Cross the road – traffic is quite fast on this stretch so take care – then head right up the hill and turn left into Hollow Lane. At the top of Hollow Lane turn left and walk to a point where the lane divides; take the lane to the left (‘No Entry’ signs) and walk along its length down to the road junction next to Hanging Bridge.

Cross the bridge to return to Derbyshire then take the footpath immediately before the Royal Oak public house, walk up through the pub car park and

exit through a stock gate into a field. Walk up the fields until a way-marked gap in a fence is reached. Along the way look out for a WWII gun emplacement cut into the far bank of the river. Pass through the gap and up onto the embankment of the flood defences; turn right and walk along the top of the bank to a stile. Cross the rather dodgy stile and continue along the embankment until it reaches a pair of stiles either side of a farm track. Pass over these stiles then along the field edge to a stock gate onto the driveway up to the Severn Trent water reclamation works. Turn right and walk down the driveway past the allotments and the churchyard to exit at a road traffic island on the outskirts of Ashbourne. On reaching the road, turn left and walk along the road into Ashbourne for around half a mile until you arrive at St Oswald’s Church. Enter the churchyard then take the path to the right to pass to the rear of some old houses. At the bollards turn left and walk down to the Ashbourne Pigeon Flying Club’s clubhouse (1800-2000), then turn left again to pass in front of the Leisure Centre. Follow the road into the car park in front of the Station Hotel; this car park was once a busy train station and goods yard. Unusually, this station was not a victim of the ‘Beeching Axe’, but ceased passenger services for economic reasons in the summer of 1954. From the car park, walk past the Station Hotel and take the former track bed over Henmoor Brook, then on under the road bridge to reach the entrance to the Ashbourne Tunnel. The tunnel was reopened to foot traffic on June 21st 2000 as part of the National Cycle Route Network and an extension to the Tissington Trail. Walk through the tunnel below the centre of Ashbourne, listening out for the automated sound effects as you go. Exit the tunnel into the car-park off Mapleton Lane near the cycle hire centre to end the walk.

Hanging Bridge, Mayfield

On December 7th 1745, the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie passed on its retreat from Derby and terrorised the local population. Legend has it that many of the Scottish rebels were caught, tried for their misdeeds, and hung from gibbets erected on the old bridge. Although the bridge was widened in 1937, the old packhorse bridge can still be seen below the newer bridge.

Health, Beauty & Fitness

Alex Robinson has recently introduced a new ‘extreme fitness’ programme, and her clients have been seeing amazing results! The programme, which has been running since June, is a 10-day quick kick start to your fitness regime, using a ‘secret’ social media group which provides daily advice on diet and exercise.

The straight-forward programme slots easily into even the busiest of lives and runs on a monthly basis. By following the easy 10-day plan her groups have achieved the following astonishing results:

June: 8 people lost a total of 62.5 inches, 70lbs in weightJuly: 7 people lost a total of 92 inches, 50lbs in weightAugust: 6 people lost a total of 42 inches, 55lbs weightSept: 9 people lost a total of 83 inches, 68lbs in weight

The results speak for themselves! One group member commented “If someone had told me I could lose a stone in less than 2 weeks, I wouldn’t have believed them...

Alex RobinsonPersonal Trainer – ‘Extreme Fitness’

and then I tried Alex’s 10 day programme and it works! It mixes a healthy (but strict) diet with fitness videos to really help boost weight andinch loss. It has opened my eyes to a whole new way of eating; a regime I intend to follow and integrate into my everyday life. Now the 10 day extreme programme is over, I can still have my nights out but Alex has taught me how to plan for those and how to compensate for my moments of weakness! Working as part of a group like this is extremely motivational and Alex’s on-going support is brilliant. It’s astounding what a difference 10 days can make!”

The cost of the 10-day course plus two weeks of follow-up support is £25, and all you will need is access to the internet via a mobile, tablet or computer. All of theexercises that Alex provides are body-weight exercises that can easily be done at home. Each month’s programme is limited to 12 members with places allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis so, if you’re looking to get in shape ahead of the Christmas party season and want a great kick-start to a new you, contact Alex on 07817 337861 or email [email protected].

Most people spend all their lives dreaming of owning a sports car – but for a lucky few that dream can sometimes become a reality.

After years spent gazing longingly at every Ferrari and Porsche that drives by, finally strolling into a dealership to shell out on one for yourself can be a life-changing event.

But when you’ve spent years scrimping and saving to own one, when the time comes to choose which one to put your money down on, the decision can be rather tricky to make. Here we’ve tried to help by picking the top five you might want to consider.

Ferrari 458 ItaliaPrice: From £178,526If it’s a Ferrari you’re after there really is only one you should be considering – and that’s this, the 458 Italia. Not only does it have looks that can kill from 100 paces, but it has an incredible 4.5-litre 562bhp V8 engine, a top speed of 202mph and can hit 60mph in a brain-melting 3.2 seconds. There’s no wonder many consider this to be the motoring nirvana.

Porsche 911Price: From £73,509Practicality isn’tgenerally high up on the agenda when buying a sports car, but with four seats in a Porsche 911 you might just be able to convince your better half that it’s the perfect family car. Ok, who are we kidding, that’s never going to happen, better then to focus on the fabulous flat-six engines and incredible handling. The 911 has been the definitive go-to sports car for generations and the latest “991” model is no different. Well worth a look.

Jaguar F-Type CoupePrice: From £85,000It took three decades for Jaguar to finally build a successor to its legendary E-Type – but the wait was worth it. The F-Type, which comes in soft-top and coupe guises, is not only stunning, but brilliant to drive too. There are three versions available: V6, V6S and V8S. We’d opt for the latter which combines a glorious exhaust note with stonking performance from the 542bhp 5.0-litre V8.

Lotus Exige SPrice: From £54,235Let’s forget luxury for a minute and just go for something a little bit bonkers and a lot of fun. The Lotus Exige S covers all that. It doesn’t have leather, in fact you’re lucky to get a radio, but this is not a performance car to be snubbed. It has a mid-engine 3.5-litre V6 engine that will propel the wild-looking machine to 60mph in just 3.8 seconds and is guaranteed to put a smile on anyone’s face. Just don’t expect to be comfortable.

Toyota GT86Price: From £25,110Yes, we’ve lined up a Toyota against supercar glitterati, but before you scoff, hear us out. The GT86 may not have the kudos of a Ferrari, but if you’re looking for sports car thrills on a budget it’s worth considering. Starting at just £25,000 you get a huge amount of car for your money like the entertaining 2.0-litre Boxer D-4S engine, smart styling and seat-of-your-pants driving thrills. Homes & Gardens

I love giving presents, whether that gift is a thing of beauty or something totally practical. With gardening as one of the nation’s top pastimes, here are a few ideas for things which I am sure most green fingered friends would be delighted to receive.

If you know a newish gardener then the basic tools are always well received, especially if you choose good quality, sturdy ones. So think fork, spade and rake – yes, they are difficult to wrap but worth the effort.

For anyone gripped by the Grow Your Own bug you could give one of my ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood ‘ gift cards – they choose the veg they want to grow and I send them out, at the right time for planting and accompanied by weekly advice and tips emails….it couldn’t be simpler! Find out more at www.pippagreenwood.com

Weeding is always an issue so a hoe is useful or for smaller spaces (such as in between plants, in gravel, between paving, or to tackle weeds within planters) try the hand held red-handled weeders – I think they’re indispensable.

A few packets of vegetable seeds are always appreciated and most garden centres already have a good varietyin stock. If you want to spend a bit more, a heated propagator makes a fantastic gift. With tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and many of the fancier ornamentals needing to be sown soon, it’ll be a gift put to use straight away.

Gardening gloves too are something we can always have more of.

Some of the gauntlet style gloves are perfect if you have to tackle a pruning job on a thorny plant or one with really rough or sharp leaves. Alternatively, there are many lower-priced types available with gripping pads on the fingers or with leather toughened strips across the knuckles. Classic greens, ravishing reds or funky florals, gloves are definitely not boring.

Birds in the garden not only help to keep pest numbers down, but they also add charm which everybody appreciates. A peanut feeder, nest box or perhaps even a bird table will attract them in and there are many designs available from modern to rustic.

For the ‘other half’ who is less inclined to help with the tough jobs in the garden, admit defeat and give them a garden lounger or even a hammock.

As container gardening continues to rise in popularity, another idea is to give a few gorgeous looking containers - either empty for the friend or relative to decide what to put in it themselves, or make them into a complete gift by planting them up with a selection of plants and under planting them with bulbs which you know will bring extra delight next year.

Finally, houseplants such as poinsettias, cyclamen, indoor azaleas and jasmines are perfect for providing bright colour indoors at this time of year. But remember when you buy any indoor plant during cold weather, it is essential that you protect it thoroughly on the journey from the shop to your car and from your car into your house as even a tiny exposure to cold drafts and low temperatures can cause damage.

By Pippa Greenwood

Visit www.pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardening-related gifts including stylish ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ gift cards, Pippa’s favourite weeding tool, signed books and lots of useful garden items for your friends & family…or for yourself!

“I’ll lock up while you get the first round in”, Trevor told Barry, scratching his beard.

“Aren’t we changing out of our work clothes?” Barry said.

“Not tonight”. This was his Christmas Eve ritual, the pub regulars expected it. Once Santa and his elf arrived at the bar everyone knew Christmas had finally arrived.

Trevor had been the Santa at the precinct grotto for years. The kids he’d once bounced on his knee now brought their own kids to tell Santa what a good little boy or girl they’d been.

“Busy year”, Trevor said, “there’s only one present left, we were cutting that a bit fine”.

“What’ll happen to it?” Barry asked. He was new to the elf game, slightly scatter-brained, but good with crowd management Trevor thought.

“It’ll go in storage until next year”. The grotto was no more than a shed decorated with tinsel, but for the last ten days over-excited kids had been queuing out the door.

“Off you trot now, mine’s a pint”, Trevor said switching off the lights.

Left to himself, Trevor locked the door and dropped the key in his coat pocket. A job well done he thought. As he turned to go he felt something pulling on his coat.

“Excuse me Santa is the grotto still open?” a young lad said. He was just a scrap of a thing, Trevor nearly tripped over him.

“Sorry lad, we’ve shut up shop”. The boy’s bottom lip began to wobble.

“But I wanted to see Santa”. The boy whimpered. Just what I need, thought Trevor, a blubberer on Christmas Eve.

“Well, you’re seeing me now aren’t you?”. Trevor said and ruffled the boy’s hair.

“And get a present”, the boy added.

“Well you should’ve come earlier”, Trevor said gruffly. It was more than his job’s worth to let the lad into the grotto without his elf present; health and safety and all that.

“I did, but your elf said I had to pay and I didn’t have any money”, the boy said rubbing his eyes. Trevor softened. Poor kid.

“Listen lad, don’t cry”. He crouched down, “tell me, have you been a good boy this year?”

The boy nodded uncertainly. Trevor chuckled. He put his hand in his pocket and pulled out all his loose change.

“Here, find yourself something nice with this”. The boy held out his hand and grinned,

“Thanks Santa”.

Trevor stood up slowly, his old knees ached.

“Happy Christmas”. He waved, and headed towards the pub. There was a cheer from the regulars as he walked in. Barry was standing at the crowded bar looking sheepish.

“Where’s my pint?” Trevor said.

“I left my wallet at the grotto”, Barry said. “There’s no pockets in these tights”.

“We’d better nip back for it”, Trevor sighed, “I’ve got the key here”.

He dug his hand into his pocket, and knew straight away what he’d done. The pocket was empty.

“I’ve dropped a real clanger”. He groaned and bundled Barry out of the pub. The boss would have his guts for garters for this.

“Oh no!” Barry gasped as they reached the grotto. Trevor was afraid to look.

“You’ve left the key in the door”. Barry panted.

“Did I?” Trevor could breathe again, “Must have been distracted by that kid.” He scanned inside the shed as Barry retrieved his wallet from behind the inflatable Rudolph.

“No harm done”. He smiled, putting the key safely back in his pocket.

He was ready for that pint. It was lucky, he thought, that his elf hadn’t noticed the pile of small change where the last present used to be.

Clay Cross based carpet retailer T Nutt & Sons has recently been granted Which? Trusted Trader status. The Which? Trusted Trader scheme only awards this certification to the very best businesses, who maintain the highest professional standards.

Managing Director David Nutt said, “We are extremely proud of being Which? Trusted Traders. The award means that our business has been vetted rigorously and gained full endorsement. Although we have been trading for over 145 years, it is still rewarding to receive recognition for our on-going efforts. It is also further reassurance to our ever-growing band of loyal customers that we are still attaining the same level of excellence.” The vetting process for the award is exhaustive and entails a visit from a professionally-qualified assessor, who undertakes a thorough scrutiny of the business and its methods,

ethics and procedures. This involves a credit check and randomised customer reference checks, as well as an examination of the administrative processes, documentation and complaints procedures.

The Which? Trusted Trader scheme really is looking for the best craftsmen and businesses out there. The exacting assessment process, moderated reviews and a partnership with the well-respected and impartial Ombudsmen Services makes for a trader endorsement scheme you can be completely confident about.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Martyn Kemp feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Derby and Belper areas and Martyn is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

We’ve noticed over the years that homeowners want their extension finished and ready for the summer, or by Christmas - and you can understand why.

Unfortunately, however, most homeowners start to think about things a couple of months too late. We get calls in early January from customers wanting a summer completion when they really needed to start the ball rolling in November or December. Similarly we get calls in the height of summer when Easter is a better bet for a Christmas completion.

Here’s why:

1. Design lead in – even in these times any designer worth his salt has some work on his books. Be suspicious of someone who can start right away. At least two weeks lead in is reasonable

2. Survey and design time – Your designer needs to

Property Matters:Don’t Delay, Act Today!Things Always Take Longer Than You Think

make a measured survey of your house, then discuss your needs and wishes, draw up a design and amend it a couple of times until you’re happy with it. This can easily take two to three weeks.

3. Planning application – The finished design will often require planning permission. If it goes smoothly this can take up to eight weeks.

4. Production drawings – You should always wait for planning approval before proceeding with the more detailed technical drawings as these can be difficult and expensive to change should the planners require any amendments to the layout. These drawings can take another two weeks to produce.

5. Building Regulations approval and tendering – You can run these concurrently but they will both take more or less another three weeks.

6. Construction phase – depending on the size and complexity this can vary from 6 weeks to 6 months, but on average most extensions are built in ten to twelve weeks.

Giving you a total of between six and seven months from start to finish!

So don’t delay! If you’re planning on an extension that is going to require planning approval, give us a call today in readiness for completion in the summer months. Contact Jon on 07768 523901 or email [email protected].

We’ve got Christmas all wrapped up this year, with a set of books designed to have every aspect of the holiday covered. If all else fails though, there’s always the option of packing it all in and doing a runner…and we’ve thought of that as well.

The Tree: The Giving Tree by Shel SilversteinWhat better kind of spruce this festive season than ‘The Giving Tree’. Loved by children and adults alike, this is a story about a little boy who grows up under the branches of a tree, and continues to take and take throughout his years into adulthood. If you don’t cry when you read this then quite frankly, you must have a heart of stone. It’s such a simple and touching story about our capacity to love and it’s perfect for some fireside snuggling up with whoever you have staying with you this Christmas.

The Gift: The Gift by Cecelia AhernIf you ever thought there weren’t enough hours in the day then meet Lou Suffern, a man who constantly needs to be in two places at once and who is struggling to keep up. He finds it impossible to really ‘be’ in the present, whether it’s at work or at home with his family. One day he meets a homeless man called Gabe and, taking pity on him, sorts him out with a job in the post room. But there’s something not quite right about Gabe. He always appears to be in more than one place at once. It’s a bit ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ for modern times, and goes to prove that as we suspected, time really could be the greatest gift of all.

The Food: Great British Bake Off: Christmas by Lizzie Kamenetzky‘Stuff your face with plates of blinis, fah-lah-lah-lah lah’ or however it goes! Christmas simply can’t go wrong with Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry helping

you along your merry way. There are master class recipes as well as contributions from all four previous winners and other memorable contestants. It’s packed with plenty of inspiration without causing you too much perspiration whilst slaving over a hot stove. It could be a present to yourself…or whoever you’ve talked into doing the cooking.

The Weather: Let it Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle Here are three touching and romantic stories that all stem from one incident, as a young girl decides to ditch the stranded train she was travelling on and heads out into the blizzard. The tales then take place over the following few days as the residents of Gracetown struggle to cope with the Christmas Eve storm. Written by some of today’s best-selling authors they are like three perfectly wrapped little stocking fillers.

The Family: A Proper Family Christmas by Chrissie ManbyWhenever someone tells you this is what they want, they mean the nostalgic Christmas card, cookie cutter image. They don’t mean the arguments, tears and recriminations that usually go hand in hand with the festive season. This is the story of two clashing families, brought together by the need to help the Buchanan’s seriously ill daughter, Izzy. The matriarch, Annabel, was adopted and so needs to find her own biological parents to see if Izzy can be saved. It sounds like a tear-jerker but it’s a warm and fuzzy one for Christmas.

The Escape Plan: Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth GilbertIf all else fails and you really can’t stand your in-laws, or even your husband for any amount of time past Boxing Day, then why not just escape from it all? At 3am, Elizabeth’s seemingly perfect life is keeping her up and making her depressed. So, she ups sticks and heads off in pursuit of happiness. Her travels take her to Italy, India and then on to Bali, finding food for her soul and her belly along the way. It’s the perfect antidote to all that forced happiness and fun.

Children & Education

They can make you worry beyond belief, and once they learn how to push your buttons they can also make you see red from time to time. However, one of the emotions I was not expecting to feel quite so much of was pride.

My kids make me proud every day. Now don’t get me wrong, they’re not child prodigies. They haven’t been moved up in school and taken A levels at the age of 9. It’s highly unlikely that either of them will ever win a Nobel Peace Prize. They’re never, ever going to win X Factor (I say that with confidence, as unfortunately they’ve both inherited my vocal ability and their Dad hasn’t contributed any more tuneful genes either). I’d be very, very surprised if one (or both) of them ran for Prime Minister, but they may go down in history for something, you never know. Only time will tell what mark they will choose to leave on the world, but that’s not the point. It’s not the scale of their achievements that makes me proud – in fact, it’s quite the opposite. When you become a parent, the tiniest little thing can fill you with more pride than you ever thought possible.

Their first tentative steps on their own. The first time they ask to go to the toilet. When you witness them being kind and considerate to another child. The second they walk on stage at any school performance, regardless of what happens when they open their mouths. A smile, a photograph, reciting a nursery rhyme unprompted... the simplest thing can make your heart swell.

Recently, my daughter was interviewed on Radio Derby. She wasn’t the star of the show, by any means, and she hadn’t been invited to speak because of her extensive knowledge on any particular subject. Rather, she just happened to be standing in the right place at the right time during a local event and she didn’t run away when she saw the reporter’s microphone. However, when her ‘interview’ (10 second clip) was played out on air the next morning I almost burst into tears! It was a ridiculous reaction that I was totally unprepared for, but I could not have been more proud if she’d just won an Oscar. That was my little girl, talking on the radio for all the world to hear (well, Derbyshire at least). She spoke spontaneously, clearly and coherently, and didn’t appear at all fazed by the microphone. I recorded the interview but have now been banned by my daughter from playing it to relatives or even mentioning it again.

While my daughter exudes confidence, my little boy is naturally less so. He gets anxious about things which I can completely relate to. As a Mum, my first instinct is always to give him a hug and protect him from whatever’s making him nervous but I realise I can’t do that forever – taking your Mum to a job interview so that she can hold your hand and give you a hug when it all gets too much just wouldn’t be right, so I have to hold back and watch. He was recently moved to a different group in swimming, and knowing his character I realised this change would be a big thing for him. Watching him take a deep breath, control his nerves and jump bravely into the pool again made me well up, and I really had to fight back the urge to rush in and cuddle him. Whatever my little ones do or achieve in their lifetime I know for a fact that I will be proudly watching nearby, holding back the tears, while they mutter “Pull yourself together Mum you’re, like, soooooo embarrassing!”

By Helen Young

The Diary of a Local MumBursting with Pride. Parenthood brings with it many emotions. The love you feel for your new little bundle when your child first makes its entrance into the world is overwhelming. As they grow they bring you joy, happiness and excitement.

LET US BRING THE DRAMA TO YOU

ARE YOU A SCHOOLLOOKING FOR A FRESH, DYNAMIC, FRIENDLY & FUN AFTER SCHOOL CLUB?

On a scale of 0 - 10 (where 0 is disastrous and 10 is fantastic) how would you rate the year?8 – I’m really pleased with so many aspects, in particular how many stepped up and got involved in making the school an even better place. It wouldn’t get a 10 as there are many things still to do!

Has anything surprised you about the school now that you’ve got to know it?How tremendous the muffins are. Never saw that one coming. On a serious note there were no real surprises – if anything I had really high expectations of the quality of relationships within the school and they proved even better than I expected.

Did you keep your New Year’s Resolutions? (Get fit, lose weight, work hard, enjoy yourself and be happy).I certainly enjoyed myself and am happy. I definitely worked hard too. As for getting fit and losing weight… that’s very difficult with the temptation of chocolate muffins and jam tarts!

The GCSE results were the best ever! Can you identify what was different this year?Determination and the belief that we had a vision and goal to achieve, then a tremendous amount of graft to get there. The students deserve so much praise and credit for making the difference.

We’ve had Ofsted in recently. What did they think of the school?I’m delighted for the school and very proud of what they said – they judged us as good in all areas, which on the current inspection framework is very difficult to get so we are really pleased. The part of the report that makes me smile the most is the quote that the school is ‘happy’.

Some people in Belper are still posting comments on Facebook about their belief in the school having a uniform. What are your views on this?At some point there will be a discussion on dress code and uniform. It is good practice to review all aspects of school life on a continuous basis so there will be discussions on plenty of different elements over time. The priority was getting the results up and having a successful Ofsted.

Do you watch any of the reality programmes about schools, such as ‘Educating Essex’ and ‘Too Tough to Teach’? Do you feel they are a true reflection of life in a secondary school?I dabble every now and again! Secondary schools are so different from each other so it is hard to compare them and say whether they are a true reflection. I worry sometimes that editing can distort how life is in schools and give the wrong impression.

Would you consider Belper School being the subject of such a programme? We were approached last year and I was asked if we would take part in an ‘Educating Belper’ programme! I thanked them profusely for enquiring but politely turned them down. We have done really well as a school in a short space of time but our improvements are fragile and very much green shoots; we need to build on this so as tempted as I was we need to keep the focus. School improvement is not a continuous upward trend and there will be bumps along the road. For now, we focus on the drive!

By Holly Pridmore from Belper, age 14

Holly’s ColumnMr Cooper A year ago I interviewed Mr Cooper who had just claimed the role of head teacher at Belper School. Now, a year later, I’ve returned to ask how him he feels the first year has gone.

Community

Show your appreciation for a fellow member of the community; it may be a friend, a family member or maybe someone you’ve come into contact with who provides a wonderful service or who works hard to make a difference. Let All Things Local surprise them with a fresh bouquet of flowers.

All Things Local has joined forces with Beverley Kennedy (pictured) from Floraline, Gregory’s Way in Belper, to offer readers the chance to show their appreciation for a fellow member of the community.

The recipient of this issue’s bouquet is Janine Pye of Belper, nominated by Bethan Woodfine also of Belper. Here’s what Bethan wrote:

“I would like to nominate Janine Pye, why? Well if anybody embodies the term “community spirit” it’s Janine. Despite having children she finds time to be actively involved in local activities and help run them.

Janine has been part of Pottery PSA for years helping Pottery School fund raise yearly. If that wasn’t enough she is also part of the Heage Windmillers and again fund raises for them and various other roles.

How do I know her? Well I am the manager of Ladybirds Pre-school. Janine has been involved in helping the pre-school to be the amazing nurturing setting it is. She comes to help all pre-school’s fund raising, she comes to help clean and sort equipment and she generally gets stuck in with whatever needs doing.

She is a very special lady and I thank you from all at Ladybirds Pre-School.” Bethan Woodfine

Nominate someone to receive the next bouquet. All you have to do is state, in no more than 100 words, who you are nominating. Include their address and the reasons why you are nominating them. You can nominate more than one person if they are living/working at the same address… and remember – flowers don’t just have to be for women!

The only rule is that the person receiving the flowers must live or work in Belper. Just write your nomination on a piece of paper and send to Friendship Blooms, All Things Local, 74 Woodhouse Road, Kilburn, Belper, Derbyshire DE56 0NA or e-mail your nomination to [email protected] putting ‘Friendship Blooms’ as the subject. Please include your full name, address and daytime telephone number on your nomination.

Closing date for nominations for the next issue is Friday 2 January 2015.

Oh new and shiny cake standYou’re great for all to seeSo tantalising and teasingWhen I get you out for tea

Victoria Sponge, Battenburg,Jam and clotted cream scones,Eccles cake and iced bunsBut never ice cream cones

Should I choose egg custard,Chocolate brownie or lemon tart,Those French fancies are so alluringThe desire of my heart

But STOP, it’s too much temptationSelf-control I must seekYou’re going back in the cupboardWell, at least until next week.

The Cosmos during December and January

Your Horoscope December 2014 and January 2015

A very happy New Year to you all!The first major planetary shift of 2015 sees Saturn, the planet of responsibility and discipline, in Sagittarius for the first time in 30 years. Having last transited this sign in 1985-87, Saturn will dip back into Scorpio from June 2015 to September 2015 and then stay permanently until December 2017. At its most positive we can expect to see a refocusing on love, tolerance and finding spiritual meaning, particularly in the areas of religion and belief systems. Education, governments, laws and our world views will all come to the forefront during the years ahead. Venus, the love planet, moves from down-to-earth Capricorn into unpredictable Aquarius on the 4th, bringing relationships and partnerships into focus. Mars gets emotional and dreamy in Pisces after the 12th; positive creative energy is available to all! The full moon is in Cancer on the 5th and the new moon is in Aquarius on the 20th.

ARIES: MARCH 21 - APRIL 20You’re making your plans to ensure a very successful 2015. The high point of your chart is full of exceptional planetary energy, urging you to forge ahead with your ideas. Personal development is also positively highlighted; there may be new options on the table. January: Saturn in far-reaching Sagittarius arrives at the point in your chart concerned with higher knowledge and education. This is an important year for Aries as renewed focus on top priority projects really gets underway. The full moon on the 20th brings innovative people your way.

TAURUS: APRIL 21 - MAY 21Your finances and assets are top priority for you this month with three planets occupying this important sector of your chart. The new moon in Capricorn on the 22nd entices you to take the opportunity to do something fresh and brand new, ultimately broadening your horizons. January: Energetic Mars is at the highpoint of your chart, confirming that this is another important phase for developing your career as new opportunities may advance your strengths. It’s a good time to make important decisions before Mars moves into Pisces on the 12th.

GEMINI: MAY 22 - JUNE 21Three planets occupy the relationship area of your chart, signalling a time to deal with any past issues that may be holding you back. The full moon on the 6th in your sign really does pave the way to letting go of any outmoded situations. Channel your energies into constructive possibilities. January: Serious Saturn is now in the relationship sector of your chart, and a close review will be necessary. Knowledge gained during 2014 will assist you in making important decisions. A short term goal also needs attention; for best results use the innovative new moon energy on the 20th.

CANCER: JUNE 22 - JULY 22 As an emotional Cancerian, you are ruled by the ebb and flow of the moon; December is a really powerful time for you. The Capricorn new moon on the 22nd brings exciting new opportunities your way and creative new beginnings now in force should definitely be followed up. January: The New Year starts with a potent full moonin your sign on the 5th. Optimism and positive thinking will make a vital difference to your current plans and help things to go your way. The full moon on the 20th highlights your finances; use your intuition to make the right decisions.

LEO: JULY 23 - AUGUST 23Creativity is high on your agenda this month as many of your new ideas and projects can now move forward and finally get underway. The Gemini full moon on the 6th is of particular relevance for you, highlighting your dealings with others and your talent for inspiring those around you. January: With four planets in the work sector of your chart, January will not be a party for fun loving Leo! Planning and restructuring is a strong focus for you this month. Your health is also a priority and with disciplined Saturn newly arrived in this area, a new wellbeing regime will be important.

VIRGO: AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 22Home and family life are in the spotlight this month; the full moon on the 6th may well bring events to a head. You may need to avoid rash decisions and the instinct to hurry certain projects. Things should settle down after the 17th as Mercury, your ruler, moves into level-headed Capricorn. January: Four planets in responsible Capricorn occupy the most creative part of your chart; this is definitely the month to get new projects up and running. Energetic Mars in Aquarius is also assisting with innovative and pioneering ideas. The new moon on the 20th is ideal for new beginnings.

In this edition of All Things Local, your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team would like to offer advice to residents for a crime-free Christmas and New Year.

Christmas is a busy time of year for everyone, even criminals, so officers are sharing their top security tips to help you and your family stay safe over the festive season. Enjoy a crime-free Christmas:

• Ensure that windows and doors are kept locked and that any valuables, including gifts, are kept out of sight; • When out shopping, carry your bag close to you with the clasp facing inwards. Keep it zipped up, and make sure your wallet or purse can’t be seen; • Ensure that any shopping bags are stored securely in the boot of the vehicle and not left on show to catch the eye of a passing criminal;• For added security, register your valuables for free on the secure website www.immobilise.com. This will help police to reunite you with your property should it be stolen and then recovered.

Upbeat Stay safe this New Year:

• Personal safety is paramount, so if you are heading out over Christmas and New Year, make sure you that have your keys, money and phone. Always let someone know what time you will be home and how you will be getting there;

• Don’t drink and drive. Drink or drug driving can be fatal. If you are going out for the evening, stick to soft drinks if you are driving. Nominate a designated driver who can get you all home safely;

• Know your alcohol limits. We want people to go out and have a safe and enjoyable evening. Anti-social behaviour, particularly related to alcohol, is one of our top priorities and we will be taking action against those who commit it.

Finally, we hope that you all have a happy and crime-free Christmas and New Year!

If you would like more advice or to contact your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team, call 101, the non-emergency number for Derbyshire police, or visit the website: www.derbyshire.police.uk.

Proposed canals and railways to join the Cromford Canal that were not always built. In the years following the opening of the canal, communities close but not connected to the canal could see the benefits in the reduced transport costs and hence the reduction in cost of coal and other goods. Therefore, wishing to benefit from these reductions, proposals were made to build railways and canals to join the Cromford Canal.

The Belper RailwayOn the 24th September 1801, Mr George Benson Strutt wrote to the Canal Company stating “This place and a populous neighbourhood want a permanent and effectual supply of coal, which might be obtained from the Cromford Canal if a railway was made from that canal to Belper” and he asked for the support of the Company for the proposal and also if they would consider a reduction in their tonnages (costs of carriage).

The Canal Committee replied on the 25th September 1801, asking for a plan of the railway, estimated cost, tolls to be charged and any other information deemed necessary. A further letter, dated the 7th October, acknowledged receipt of the plans of the intended railway to start from the canal at Bull Bridge to Blackbrook. The route of the railway, or stoneroad, would follow the line of the modern A610 to Ambergate, where it would cross the River Derwent and follow the line of the Derwent across the Wyver to Belper Bridge, crossing the A517, terminating at Plains Lane at Blackbrook. The Company also agreed on the reduction of tonnages.

On the 20th June 1802, Mr Strutt wrote to Mr Evans, secretary of the Canal Company, stating “railway plans are suspended but the plan is still very desirable.” There is no other record and the railway was never built.

The Bakewell to Cromford CanalAt a special General Assembly of the Cromford Canal Company on the 19th November 1802, it was resolved that the Company encourage the proposal to build a canal from Bakewell to the Cromford Canal. At this meeting, it was also resolved that there would be a reduction in tonnages for coal and all goods carried on the proposed canal from the Cromford Canal, if the proprietors of the Peak Forest Canal also agreed to such a reduction on their tonnages.

The canal would start at the Cromford Canal, where the later Lea Arm now runs, onward to Lea Bridge, turning westwards towards Cromford Bridge. From Cromford Bridge the canal would follow a line north of the Derwent to Matlock Bridge, roughly following the line of the A6, to Darley Dale and Rowsley. At Rowsley, the canal would cross the Derwent and follow north of the river Wye to Haddon Hall, where it was to be taken in a tunnel under

Local History: The Cromford Canal Company

the Hall, finally terminating at Bakewell. There are no further records and the canal was never built, probably due to the costs of this difficult engineering enterprise.

The Mansfield to Pinxton CanalIn February 1803, a letter was received from Mr Vickers of Mansfield to the Cromford Canal Company stating that at a public meeting in Mansfield, a resolution was passed to seek the assistance of the Cromford Canal Company in the building of a canal between the Cromford Canal at Pinxton and the town of Mansfield. In reply, the Company agreed in principle and would await further details.

No other record of the proposed canal appears to exist, but on the 31st May 1809, a proposal to construct a railway from Mansfield to Pinxton was received from a Mr Peter Hoad of Mansfield. The Company replied that they had no objections to the making of the railway but could give no assistance to the measure. The railway was completed in 1819 and much of it still exists today. To find out more about the Cromford Canal, its history, and plans for its restoration, go to The Friends of the Cromford Canal website: www.cromfordcanal.org.uk.
