11:15 Service: “What Feeds Us” Jack Gaede

It is no coincidence that many of our media metaphors have food and diet imagery. We talk about what news we consume. Many of our apps have a news feed. We talk about binge viewing. Many of us are very conscious about our diet and our food intake, but I’m wondering what it would look like for us to be as equally conscious of our media intake. Many people talk about the merits of a cleanse or a detox, but what

does that look like in our current media landscape?

Apr. 15 11:15 Service: “What Wondrous Love” Rev. Kendyl Gibbons

Part of our stated mission as a church is to build a caring community; what does that look like in practice? How can we learn to be more present for one another in times of need, in ways that are actually helpful and life-giving? What does our culture attempt to teach us, and what else might we need to learn? We will share joys and concerns, and the choir will sing.

11:15 Service: “Feast of Fools” Rev. Kendyl Gibbons

With Easter, the holiday of resurrection and spring, falling on April Fool’s Day, this seems like a appropriate time to consider the character of the Holy Fool, who claims the freedom to speak truth to power in the guise of humor, and to defy the expectations of polite society in the service of what is authentically sacred. How is this role part of our religious tradition, and how does it manifest in today’s world? The choir will sing, and the children will enjoy their traditional Easter Egg hunt.

10:00 Forum: “Coming of Age, Millennials in a Multi Generation World” Linda Johnson, Camilla Huet-Derrossett

As a social worker, Linda Johnson has had experience working with all age groups and typically lived in a multi-generational household. Camilla Huet-Derrossett is an Economist and will be discussing the trends that we are seeing with the millennials.

10:00 Forum: “Jackson County Today” Frank White Jr.

Jackson County, Mo. includes 18 cities and towns and over 650,000 people. As the County moves for-ward, what are some changes we can expect in the jail, Combat, the courts, and other services the County provides? Jackson County Exec., Frank White, Jr. will update us of the current status of Jackson County and where he hopes to lead.

10:00 Forum: “Energy Consciousness in the Kansas City Schools” Jensen Adams

How and why Kansas City Public Schools are championing the effort for environmentally sustainable schools. Jensen Adams manages the KCPS Office of Energy and Sustainability, and is a mayoral appoin-tee to the Kansas City, Missouri Environmental Management Commission.

Forum & Sunday Services continues, BLUU...

10:00 Forum: “Can We Talk about Zionism?” Jaime Jackson The current chokehold on public discussion harms us all. Jamie Jackson is an active supporter of Citizens for Justice in the Middle East, Unitarian Universalists for Justice in the Middle East, and Jewish Voice for Peace--all working for peaceful and just resolution of the Palestine-Israel conflict. Ms. Jackson is a native of Kansas City and member of All Souls.

Apr. 22 11:15 Service: “Redder Apples” Rev. Kendyl Gibbons

We celebrate Earth Day by honoring our planet -- cradle, homestead, prop-master, and sepulcher of humanity’s dramas. While science lays our superstitions about the forces of nature to rest, our appreciation for the earth’s delicate balances and feedback loops must grow, or we risk extinction like other species before us. In the soil of humility, our best wisdom is found. We will share a ritual blessing of dust and ashes.

10:00 Forum: “Black Lives of Unitarian Universalism” Rev. Mykal Slack Instead of the 10 A.M. All Souls Forum this date, we will offer our space for a Black Lives of Unitarian Universalism program specifically for people of color. All Souls Forum regulars, and more, are invited to attend the special, public Black Lives of UU worship service at 11:15. We will return to our regular schedule on the May 6th.

11:15 Service: “RECLAIM: Black Lives of UU Revival” Rev. Osagyefo Sekou We are proud to be the host congregation for the first weekend-long revival, RECLAIM, hosted by Black Lives of Unitarian Universalism. And we are excited to have Rev. Osagyefo Sekou, noted activist, public theologian and musician out of St. Louis, join us as our guest minister this Sunday. His messages in word and song offer a realness and a vision for a better world that is much needed in these times. Please join us and our special guests for this amazing service. In order to create safe spaces as part of our hospitality, at certain times during the weekend, some areas of the building will be designated for people of color only.

W hen I was a seminary student, I spent nine months serving as a hospital chaplain. In that capacity I

came into contact with a very wide variety of expectations about the role of chaplain, and the role of clergy in general. I was especially eager to understand what non-Protestants thought their spiritual

leaders were supposed to do for them, and one of the questions that chaplains were encouraged to ask

when we first met with a patient was whether they had a faith community, and if so, should we notify someone

there that their parishioner was in the hospital? I still remember the astonishing range of answers that I could

get to this question in a single day, even from different patients in the same tradition. I particularly recall one

Jewish patient who replied, with some annoyance, that his Rabbi “had better things to do than run around to hospitals,” and would never expect to see the Rabbi, no matter what his health situation. Later the same

afternoon, I met another Jewish patient who said that a visit from the Rabbi was the one thing that made his stay

in the hospital bearable. I’m pretty sure they were not talking about the same Rabbi, but it made me realize that you really can’t assume

everyone means the same thing when they talk about ‘pastoral care’. I also met folks who were terrified to see the priest walk in, because it

could only mean that they were much more gravely ill than they had previously thought, and perhaps dying -- some of them were even not so

glad to see me! And I encountered patients who would have been surprised if their ‘preacher’ even knew they were there, but looked forward to a visit and prayers every day with one of the church deacons. Not to mention those who wanted no contact with any religious representative,

including myself as chaplain. It was an eye-opening experience in many ways.

With so many of our UU members coming from widely divergent faith backgrounds, including no church at all, our understandings of what

pastoral care means in our churches are quite varied, and All Souls is no different. For some people, pastoral care is what happens when the minister meets with a family to plan a memorial service, or with a couple to plan a wedding. For some, it is a formal counseling practice, with

private sessions in the minister’s office. For others, pastoral care means routine visits to all members’ homes, whether they have invited the

minister or not, while still others would extend such visits only to shut ins, or those who are permanently ill or incapacitated, which makes some

of those so visited feel insulted. Some people regard any call, card or visit from any fellow member to be pastoral outreach on behalf of the

church; for others, only attention from the pastors amounts to pastoral care. Some folks believe that most important pastoral care happens

informally, with a listening ear in the hallway after a meeting, or a phone call when they miss church; others don’t want to feel that the minister,

or the church, is ‘tracking’ them.

With all of these implicit expectations floating around, I think it is helpful to be as clear as we possibly can be when we talk about the kinds of

pastoral care that All Souls offers, or would like to offer. I would like to share two clear statements of my own perspective on this aspect of

ministry, and then invite us all into a conversation about how we understand it here in our church. First, I am not a personal therapist, and long

term counseling is not something I am prepared to offer. I can help any member, couple, or family, do some preparation for consulting a pro-

fessional therapist, so that you can make good use of that time, and present your issues effectively, but I can’t and don’t undertake that work

myself. I can be helpful to people who are moving in a healthy way through normal life passages, or who are wrestling with specifically theologi-

cal questions, but other mental health challenges are beyond my scope. That said, I am happy to offer whatever pastoral attention members of

this congregation ask me for on their own behalf. I don’t read minds, and I’m wary of second or third hand communication, in this as in any oth-

er context, but if you tell me you want my attention, it is yours. At the same time, our mission is to build a caring community, which means that other people need to participate in the satisfaction of making these kinds of connections also.

Following the service on April 15, the Caring Connections Team and I are sponsoring a Church Chat, so that anyone who has ideas or questions

about the subject of pastoral care can help us to understand better what we want it to mean for this congregation. We would like to know what good pastoral care looks like to you, how you think we should notify the church of our needs, and what kind of responses would work for you. I

expect that there will be much diversity in our thoughts, but I also hope that some common threads will emerge, that can guide our

team. Please save the date, and join us!

April 22, 11:15 Sunday Service

All Families Are Invited

In celebration of Earth Day, all of our children and youth will receive flowering plants on Earth Day, April 22. The flowers are made possible through the generosity of Rae Kemp, who set up a fund to provide springtime flowers for our children every year. The flowers remind us to celebrate the growth of new life and the wonderful diversity of nature. Let us also celebrate the beauty and diversity of our children and youth at All Souls. They are our renewal of life and our hope for the future of our mother earth.

It’s officially spring and that means spring cleaning time. Why not get a jump start by cleaning out your pantry and

putting those unused cans in the

The 7th principle of Unitarian Universalism:

"Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part" That's everything. And the key word is "interdependent." From microbes to redwoods to ladybugs to sea plants growing in seeming darkness, from bacteria to spinach to elephants, all of the things with life---life interacting to promote the continuance of life. We can be a killer species, blithely killing everything we touch. We can also make the conscious choice to do what we can to promote the living interdependent web, functioning for the life that is the ecosystem. That life is the interdependent web. The new All Souls composter, plus instruction about how to use it best for our ecological situation, is Green Sanctuary's April offering to All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church.

It is gift of respect to the interdependent web of life.

More Social Responsibility Board News…

We're beginning the planning for voter registration drives this month. What are the rules, who can register people, and how do we coordinate with other activists? Watch for specific information on posters and in the Flicker and Sunday announcements. We need voters at the polls whenever there's an election no matter how "insignificant." Local school dis-trict boards choose curricula and superintendents, and spend our tax money. City councils, in KC or Liberty, make deci-sions for you. Be part of the movement to get out the vote by starting with registration. Save Saturday April 21 for the 150th anniversary project, Planting Independence, clearing the yards and gardens of peo-ple with disabilities. The Whole Person, CLICK HERE an independent living center at 3710 Main, will provide the address of a person who needs help. We provide the rakes, clippers, and bags. plus of course the strong bodies! Our goal is at least two crews to help homeowners stay in their houses. We'll have posters on the SRB bulletin board, and a signup sheet. This is a great way to celebrate Earth Day.

Planting Independence--One Yard at a Time

All Souls members are invited to do cleanup and trimming in the yards of people receiving services from The Whole Person. People with disabilities often need help with yard maintenance, from raking leaves to cutting vines. We've been asked to find two or three crews, who'll provide their own tools if the consumer doesn't have them. The date is April 21, the day before Earth Day, a great way to celebrate. Posters will be on bulletin boards, with a sign-up sheet on the Social Justice bulletin board next to Conover. Or contact [email protected] to sign up, individually or as a crew.

It’s time to talk about landscaping! Our new elevator will soon be finished and
