Blessed are those who play for the 1 st football or netball team, For they will be popular. Blessed are those who achieve grade 8 at their musical instrument, For they will be known as talented. Blessed are those who complete the Duke of Edinburgh award, For they will be called ‘a well-rounded individual.’ It’s exam period for many young people at school, college or university at the moment, and for many it’s a really stressful and nervous time. There is such a lot of pressure to achieve and be a successful person. But what if you fail? What if you don’t get the grades? Is that game over? In POD (14-18s Bible Study) this week, we were looking at the Beatitudes from Matthew 5:1-12, and at a time of stress and pressure to perform and succeed, these verses are wonderful news! Where our culture says your life will only be good if you are enormously talented, academically brilliant and thoroughly well rounded, Jesus says: 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled”. Jesus turns everything upside down. Instead of being self-sufficient and high achieving, the people who will gain everything are those who recognise that they are failures and spiritually bankrupt before God, those who mourn their sin and who long to be right with God. The only person who has ever lived God’s way perfectly is Jesus, and he invites us to believe in him, to be united to him and so to inherit everything that he has earned. Baptisms Today We welcome to the 9.30am service of Baptism today: Lauren Whiddett and William Nicholls. We also welcome their parents, their family and family friends. We do assure them all of our support and prayers.

From Stuart Burrell: Thanks and an Update— ‘I signed up to a clinical trial in August 2011, whilst it kept me feeling well it did not work, after a short break, a new trial treatment was started in May 2012. I am still on this, it is working, keeping me generally very well and my condition remains stable. This is my medical situation. Without the power of prayer and communication with God and Jesus, I feel sure I would not be in this fortunate position. Annie Hance gave me, on behalf of the church family a prayer card ‘In Quietness and Trust in Your strength’; this I refer to quite frequently, it is beautifully worded. Many thanks for all your prayers, Stuart Burrell’

Men Aloud Our Men Aloud breakfast is NEXT Saturday 26 January at 8.30am. We will be at the Bent Arms and our focus for the morning will be an interview with Keith Ward. It would be good to see a good number there, if you haven't come before why not think about coming along this time.

This would also be a good event to invite a non-Christian friend to. Full breakfast £7. Tea/Coffee and Toast £2. Look out for the sign up sheet at the back of the church TODAY or sign up via email: ([email protected]) Steve Hagger

OMF Prayer Meeting Come and join in mission prayer at the OMF Prayer Meeting NEXT Sunday 27 January, at

5.30pm in the Tiger Lounge.

The meeting includes prayer for mission partners Hans-Ueli and Wendy Gerster and Ian and Anne-Marie Prescott and families. Audrey Caisley

This week’s mission partners’ focus is on: Five Talents

Five Talents are the Anglican microfinance charity working in marginalised communities of the world. Our supporters invest in enterprising individuals through business training, village savings and small loans. This hand-up rather than a hand-out is creating jobs and transforms lives among the poor in twelve countries. Please give thanks for: Richard and Elaine’s successful training courses at

Kabale, Uganda, in October The record total of 50,000 members worldwide The request for two directors of Five Talents in Kenya

to share their good practice on savings based micro finance

For the tremendous response to the Big Give appeal where their target of £50,000 was met to enable the launch of two community banks in Kenya

Please pray: For the launch of two new community banks in Kenya

following the success of the two pilots, now that funding is in place

For the work that all the branches are presently doing to understand the social impact of Five Talents so that work can be targeted to achieve an even better impact, especially now that the next three year plans are being produced Please go to All Saints’ website - Five Talents as well

as: ‘fivetalents.org.uk’ for more information.

volunteers), ensuring staff are security checked and aware of safety, keeping a register of children, upkeep of crèche materials/

toys. This is a salaried role and hours are term time only. It would suit an individual who enjoys pre-school children, is happy to welcome new

Mums and children into church groups, and is willing to work with the volunteers to keep arrangements and rotas up to date.

If you are interested in applying, or would like further information please contact: Katie Spensley (01444 414923)
