ALL LEARNING IS DOUBLE CODED
•EMOTIONALLY
•COGNITIVELY
ALL EMOTION IS ABOUT….
•SAFETY OR BELONGING
EMOTIONS ARE THE MOTIVATOR FOR LEARNING
• What motivates you to teach?
love learning like students like the challenge like the summers off need money need the schedule for my personal life social connections love it when students “get it”
LEARNING THINGS YOU DON’T WANT TO LEARN
•What have you had to learn in the last year that you did not want to learn?
STUDENTS ARE NO DIFFERENT
MOTIVATORS INCLUDE:
• - A RELATIONSHIP (BELONGING) • - A FUTURE STORY • - KNOWING WHY (MEANING) • - PERSONAL VALUE OR CONNECTION • - RUNNING FROM SOMETHING OR TOWARD SOMETHING • - FEARS • - COMPETITION (MALES MORE THAN FEMALES) • - CHALLENGE/RIGOR/MASTERY - HATE/REVENGE
FUTURE STORY
•“If you don’t write your own story, someone else will.” Regina Lewis
Video Betti Souter Aha! Process Consultant Author of The R Rules
TEACHING WHY
• INCREASES LEARNING BY 30%
• GIVES MEANING
• PROVIDES RELEVANCE
MAKING PERSONAL CONNECTIONS
• MAKES IT RELEVANT
• ATTACHES THE LEARNING TO EMOTION WHICH IS THEN REMEMBERED LONGER
CHALLENGE/MASTERY/RIGOR
• MASTERY GOALS ARE MUCH MORE POWERFUL THAN PREFORMANCE OR SOCIAL GOALS.
• CHALLENGE/MASTERY/RIGOR INVOLVES FAILURE.
• FAILURE MUST BE REFRAMED AS “ONE MORE THING THAT YOU LEARNED.”
• ACHIEVEMENT OF MASTERY GOALS TAKES TIME – 10 YEARS TO BECOME AN EXPERT. (GLADWELL)
Self-efficacy is a
person’s belief in his
or her ability to succeed in
a particular situation.
Students with a strong sense of efficacy are more likely to
• challenge themselves with difficult tasks • be intrinsically motivated • put forth a high degree of effort in order to
meet their commitments, • attribute failure to things which are in their
control, rather than blaming external factors • recover quickly from setbacks, and • achieve their personal goals.
Teachers need self efficacy, too
"Schools in which staff members collectively judge themselves capable of promoting academic success imbue their schools with a positive atmosphere for development that promotes academic attainments regardless of whether they serve predominantly advantaged or disadvantaged students"(Bandura, 1994).
Anxiety Hopelessness Shame Boredom Anger Acceptance (I accept that this has happened.) Putting into perspective (Worse things could happen.) Positive refocusing, (I’ll think about something happy instead of
what happened.) Positive reappraisal (I can learn something from this.) Refocus on planning steps to take (I have a plan).
MALES PROCESS EMOTIONS DIFFERENTLY
• FEMALE BRAINS
• MALE BRAINS

LIFE INVOLVES CHANGE
•CHANGE CREATES EMOTION AND MOTIVATES US – BOTH POSITIVELY AND NEGATIVELY.

If the transition was self-initiated, abrupt, or done by someone else, then the emotional issues will be different. Often if the separations come frequently, the emotional issues do not get processed but rather accumulate.
IF THE CHANGE WAS SOMETHING WE DID, THE
EMOTIONAL IMPACT IS LESS.
IF THE CHANGE IS SOMETHING SOMEONE DID TO US, THEN THE CHANGE IS MUCH HARDER EMOTIONALLY.
AUTONOMY (NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH INDEPENDENCE) IS A KEY MOTIVATOR.
