Her tireless work ethic, focus, and desire to be better than good has fueled

her two decades in the spotlight.

He has been named Best Jazz Guitarist Of The Year by the readers and critics of Guitar Player and was presented with Guitar Player magazine’s Certified Legend Award in 2012. Paul Gilbert (San Diego Session)From platinum albums and number one chart success as a founding member of MR. BIG, to frightening the guitar community with new levels of ferocious picking technique with shred-pioneers RACER X, to exploring punk, pop, classical, blues, jazz, and progressive instrumental styles in his solo career, Paul Gilbert has recorded a massive amount of stunning guitar music, all while circling the globe to play sold-out arenas. He is perhaps best known for his versatility and speed, which helped him be named as one of the “Top 10 Shredders Of All Time”.Years as a columnist for Guitar Player and

Premier Guitar magazines, along with giving countless clinics and private lessons have given Paul deep experience in the art of communicating music to all levels of guitarists. Paul’s groundbreaking “Intense Rock” videos and DVDs have inspired legions of guitarists to improve their accuracy, speed, and phrasing. Paul has also toured with Joe Satriani’s G3 and played with legendary drummer Mike Portnoy. Whether he’s playing to 10,000 fans or jamming one-on-one with a student, Paul is living his childhood dream of taking the sounds in his head and bringing them into reality – on the electric guitar.

Muriel Anderson (Vancouver)One of the world’s foremost fingerstyle guitarists and harp-guitarists, Muriel Anderson is the first woman to have won the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship. She has recorded over a dozen CDs and performs in the US, Europe, and the Far East. Muriel is host of the renowned Muriel Anderson’s ALL STAR GUITAR NIGHT® and founder of the MUSIC FOR LIFE ALLIANCE charity. Her facility across the genres of folk, classical, jazz, bluegrass and international music is revered by guitarists worldwide. Her unique approach to the instrument virtually transforms the guitar into a lyrical choir, then a marching band, then a Japanese koto, then a Bluegrass

band, one minute launching into a Beatles’ tune and the next, Rodrigo’s Concerto de Aranjuez. Touring in the USA and internationally year round, she continually amazes audiences with her technique and endears them with her sense of humor.

Stuart Hamm (San Diego Session)Through his innovative work as a solo artist and his contributions as a sideman to the likes of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Eric Johnson, Stuart Hamm has firmly established himself as one of the most influential electric bassists of the past half century. Extending the non-traditional function of the electric bass previously revolutionized by Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke, Stuart helped to reshape the contemporary concept of the bass guitar as an unaccompanied instrument with the utilization of polyphonic, two-handed tapping, slapping and popping techniques, chords, and harmonics. Stuart has received an extensive list of accolades such as being voted “Best Jazz Bassist” two years in a row and “Best Rock Bassist” three years in a row by Guitar Player Magazine, becoming the only bassist to win the award in both genres and at the same time.

Dave Langguth (Toronto - Session 1)Dave attended the Berklee College of Music, studying with Victor Mendoza, John Ramsey, Skip Hadden and Ed Kaspick, and in 1993 following his studies, he moved to Halifax and broke into the scene with such artists as: Dutch Mason, Brett Ryan and Wayne Nicholson. Five years later, Dave found himself living in Toronto performing with the likes of: Sass Jordan, Alannah Myles, The Kings, Rik Emmett and Grammy award-winning pop star: Nelly Furtado. While being on the road with Nelly, Dave has also performed with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland.

He has had numerous television appearances worldwide, including Jay Leno, David Letterman, Regis & Kelly, Much Music, MTV, The View, Carson Daly, Extra and Concert for Diana and was featured at the Montreal Drum Festival. Stand Alone Rock Guitarist (Toronto – Session 1) with special guest Gary HoeyThis seminar will give you the tools to create your own style. Influences are important in a player but learning to cut your own path will give you longevity and get you noticed amongst your peers and listeners. Learning TABS off the internet is a great way to learn your favourite tunes and increase your technique and knowledge of playing guitar but do you stand out in a crowd or are you a carbon copy player of your favourite bands? Topics include creating your own guitar lines and phrases by thinking outside of the box and breaking stale practice routines of scales and chords, being able to move

freely around the guitar when chording and creating riffs, user friendly theory that can be applied right away, fretboard visualization, and target notes. Techniques such as legato, tapping, economy, alternate, and sweep picking will also be covered. There will be lots of in class jamming and plenty of examples that you can take home and practice. The great Gary Hoey will visit and work with this class!

All That Jazz (Toronto – Session 2)with Rob Bulger and special guest Mike SternYour jazz playing will soar to new heights with this course which will cover guide tones, drop 2 and 3 voicings(chords) and also deal with voice leading the aforementioned voicings. The technical details of scales and modes (major, natural minor, harmonic and melodic minor and the modes and harmony derived from these scales) will be covered along with the rhythmic aspect of comping, aspects of phrasing, and how to play motivically. Improvisation will be high on the agenda and we will spend time on how to develop an improvisation, how to “tell a story”. Tunes from the standard jazz repertoire will be used as vehicles for all concepts taught. This course will also feature a visit from jazz legend, Mike Stern!

Deep Blues (Toronto -Session 2) with Dennis McCumber and special guest Duke RobillardAre you looking to up your blues game? Whether you are looking to develop a deeper understanding of the traditional blues grooves or to create your own, this will be the course for you. We’ll not only be looking at different progressions of the 8, 12 and 16 bar blues, but we’ll also be deepening our chord vocabulary. We’ll shuffle, swing and even funk out. If you are looking to take a step out of that standard blues box, you’ve come to the right place! We’ll look at how to expand our knowledge of the pentatonic scale and it’s different positions as well as explore the use of modes and arpeggios to

outline the changes. This will be a week filled with knowledge that will take you a year to digest. Blues legend Duke Robillard will be a guest in this course!

The class will

examine advanced fingerstyle and flat picking, vocal accompaniment, altered guitar tunings, two-handed rhythmic tapping, harmonics, specialized right hand techniques (eg. tapping harmonics), stylistic genre, scales and arpeggios, ensemble play, and applied music theory. From the legendary stylings of Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanuel to the modern acoustic stylings of Andy McKee this course will teach you ways to bring the acoustic guitar to the forefront as a solo and accompanying instrument. The incomparable Muriel Anderson will visit this class!

Rock Improvisation Target Practice (Vancouver Session)with Jon Finn and special guest Andy TimmonsWhen you tell a story, you don’t think about how to spell the words. You just tell the story. You do this because you know the words well enough that you don’t have to think about it. Knowing your scales, keys, arpeggios and music theory is important if you want your solos to achieve a certain level of sophistication. But too often, knowing these isn’t enough. Many guitarists give up and take the “I play what I feel” approach which is fine until you start playing nothing but wrong notes when the chord progressions start to get challenging. Rock Improvisation Target Practice is a method developed by Jon Finn, which focuses on picking a note to “aim” for within a phrase. This allows the player to think more about conveying the feeling, and “telling the story.” In the course, Jon will present several chord progressions and suggest Target Note solutions, uses of scales and arpeggios and a variety of technical and artistic concepts. This course is meant for the intermediate to advanced player. Music reading ability is preferred but not required. Students in this course will enjoy a visit from rock great Andy Timmons.

Guitar Workshop Plus is a program designed for aspiring musicians of all ages to promote the growth and development of musical knowledge and skills. Our

program is unique in that we cater our instruction to the student’s personal style, level of experience, and musical goals. We create a healthy, non-competitive, and supportive environment in which to learn. Each day consists of morning and afternoon classes that involve a hands-on approach, late afternoon clinics, ensemble performances, and evening concerts. Students will also enjoy visits from world-class guest artists and have many performance opportunities. DVD recordings of the student performances are available after the sessions. The complete immersion in music allows students to walk away with enough material and musical ideas to last until next year.

Whether you just started playing recently and want to get started in the right direction, or you’ve been playing professionally and want to further develop your craft, you will find what you’re looking for at Guitar Workshop Plus.

Currently, instruction is provided for guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and vocals. Students can elect to study one class OR seminar each session. The guitar program is extensive and unique in that students elect to study the style that they enjoy most. Guitar styles include rock, blues, jazz, acoustic, classical, country and a guitar course for the absolute beginner. We also offer comprehensive bass, drums, keyboard, vocal and songwriting classes covering various styles, theory, performance, and technique.

Each course combines hands-on technique with musicianship skills such as theory, ear training, rhythm studies, etc. In addition, most of these classes include a one-hour per day rhythm section class in which students are given the opportunity to play with the faculty rhythm section and apply the skills and knowledge they are acquiring in class.

ClassesClasses are offered for varying skill levels ranging from beginner to advanced. On the first day of the session, all students are evaluated to ensure that they are placed in the appropriate class level thereby maximizing their learning potential. Class sizes are small to promote individualized attention for each student as well as to facilitate ensemble arrangements.

SeminarsSeminars are courses which concentrate on specific topics and will sometimes feature guest instructors. Generally, seminars are designed for the intermediate to advanced player although some may be open to all levels. Students are evaluated to ensure that they are at an appropriate level for the course. Seminar students meet with the instructor all day and, because there is

no restriction to class size, do not take part in rhythm section classes. Faculty led ensembles for seminars depend upon class size and format.

ClinicsIn addition, all students may attend clinics. Each day, two or three clinics are offered covering topics such as improvisation, songwriting, vocals, scales and modes, building technique, slide, percussion, practice methods and more. Students are welcome to sign up for these clinics on campus.

Our AdministrationOur administration has been responsible for organizing and directing summer music programs across North America for the past fifteen years. Founded by Brian Murray, a Toronto area guitarist/performer/educator, the Guitar Workshop Plus administration and faculty have developed a loyal student base due to the positive experience, excellent curriculum, professional faculty, visiting guest artists, and the opportunity to meet other people who share the same musical interests.

Our FacultyOur faculty is carefully selected and comprised of professional musicians and instructors with extensive experience teaching in workshops, private settings, and post-secondary institutions. These talented educators have considerable recording backgrounds, perform around the world, author instructional books and write columns for music magazines.

Our students come from diverse backgrounds including young-aspiring musicians, adult hobbyists, high school and post-secondary students pursuing music careers, semi-professional and professional musicians.
