All Abilities. Limitless Possibilities.
2019 Community Impact Report
…And Counting
CELEBRATING 100 YEARS
Dear Friends of Easterseals,
2019 was an exciting year for Easterseals as we celebrated the 100th anniversary of our national organization! While the Easterseals mission has expanded over the last century, one thing that will never change is how we make a difference in the lives of the people we serve. We will continue to champion the most effective ways to make a profound, positive difference in the lives of those who need it most.
Here at Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore, we provided direct care to 7,286 individuals last year. More than 26,000 individuals sought out Easterseals for information, referral and educational training. More than 95% of Easterseals’ revenue went directly to support the services for the people we serve.
HERE ARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR THAT YOUR SUPPORT MADE POSSIBLE:
• In April, we celebrated the 100th Anniversary by cutting the ribbon on an expanded center for our Salisbury Children’s Therapy Services. Last year, we served more than 500 children in this location alone, and anticipate serving even more thanks to the expansion.
• Volleyball Challenge Ambassadors, Jackie and Isaiah, raised awareness and helped raise nearly $300,000 at the 2019 Easterseals/CAI Volleyball Challenge. Our Title Sponsor, CAI, returned for the 15th year!
• Meeting an urgent need in the community, we launched a new Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy program for children under the age of three who have autism. This therapy can be life-changing in the daily life of the child and the family.
• Our Adult Day Care and Memory Care programs continued to grow – a sign of the growing need by caregivers of loved ones with dementia and early onset Alzheimer’s.
“The people who make the biggest difference in the world are the people who make small
ones each and every day.” -Robert Clancy
2
• Children’s Therapy Services, serving our youngest clients ages birth to three, increased by 49%, indicating a growing demand for treatment of children at a younger age to improve their long term success in life.
• The annual Walk With Me Delmarva continued to break fundraising records, raising over $58,000.
• Our Annual Dinner celebrated 100 years as a national organization. We also honored Rotary District 7630 with the Drex Jones
Volunteer award for their incredible partnership and dedication to our local affiliate.
• Total operating revenue last year was $56,842,336. Underfunded services totaled $4,795,293, which is why additional support through foundation grants and corporate and individual donors is so critical to Easterseals’ ability to serve individuals and families who need our services.
Easterseals isn’t just about the legacy that is behind us – as rich as that is. We honor our legacy but always with an eye on the future. With your support, we are strategically positioned to meet the ever-growing needs of the community. Thank you for helping to ensure that Easterseals can continue to be a vital resource for people living with disabilities, seniors, caregivers and families.
Sincerely,
Kenan J. Sklenar President/CEO

Easterseals has been a trusted provider of children’s therapy
in the Delmarva region for over 70 years. We specialize
in treating children ages birth through eighteen
years with a variety of challenges including
developmental delay, Autism Spectrum
Disorders, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy,
Speech-Language Delay, feeding and
swallowing difficulties, and many others.
Intervention services are provided in the
child’s home, as mandated by federal
requirements for children under three (3)
years old served under the Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act.
This year, Easterseals launched a new initiative
to address the growing need for early therapy
services for children diagnosed with autism. These
children will receive Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy as part of a comprehensive team approach, which may also
include Speech Language Pathology, Occupational and Physical Therapy, and Early Childhood Special
Education services. This intensive ABA Therapy will include parent education, support and training.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy services help increase language and communication skills;
improve attention, focus, social skills, memory, and academics by focusing on teaching new skills.
Family education and support is also a critical component when working with very young children.
Studies show, when ABA therapy starts before the age of two, the therapy is even more successful.
Easterseals is grateful for the preliminary funding to launch this initiative being provided by the
Longwood Foundation, Welfare Foundation, Bank of America Neighborhood Builder, Discover Bank,
and the Laffey McHugh Foundation.
Easterseals is first in the State of Delaware to offer this therapy at such an early age! Starting treatment through ABA therapy at this very young age will lead to major successes in the
future of the children and families we serve.

The unemployment rate for individuals with disabilities is
more than double that of non-disabled workers. Many
people with disabilities want to work, but have not
been able to secure jobs because of accessibility
and attitudinal barriers.
Easterseals workforce development
services provide an individualized approach
to assisting persons with intellectual
disabilities, including autism, to help them
find their dream job. To do that, the
Easterseals Supported Employment program
assists individuals who want to secure and/or
maintain employment by providing support
services, like job coaching and training, that
optimize their abilities to secure steady and secure
employment.
After conducting an assessment of the person’s interests, skills and
knowledge that would be applicable to the workplace, Easterseals matches people and jobs so that
participants work for community employers at competitive wages. On-going supports of the employees
are maintained to increase individual success.
Last year alone, Easterseals worked with more than sixty-five various local businesses such as Grotto
Pizza, Capital One, CAI, Johnny Janosik Furniture, Willey Farms, Giant Food Stores, Safeway, Indian
River School District and many others, to support more than ninety people like Mikayla, pictured above,
in good jobs throughout the community.
Contact us if your business is looking for some dependable, hardworking employees!

Over the next decade, over 71 million Americans will be 65 years of
age and older. With the increasing numbers of older persons
and persons with lifelong disabilities living longer, we will
see a broader demand for home and community-based
services. These services will help manage activities
of daily living that may be limited because of
acute or chronic conditions, and will keep people
integrated in their communities.
In Delaware, the need for adult day care is
greater than ever before, especially when caring
for a spouse or elderly parent going through
the stages of Alzheimer’s disease or some other
form of dementia. It can be challenging and often
overwhelming.
To meet that growing need, the Easterseals Adult Day Care
Program in Georgetown and New Castle provides a center-based day
care for adults with all forms of dementia, and, in particular, persons with early and mid-stage
Alzheimer’s. Providing caregivers with peace of mind and the knowledge that their loved-one is
receiving quality care and attention, in a safe and secure environment.
Last year alone, nearly 200 seniors throughout the State of Delaware were served by the program.
The Memory Care Program, partially funded by the Delaware Division of Services for Aging and Adults
with Physical Disabilities, includes modifications such as secured doors and special program areas
designed to better serve our families. While their loved one is being cared for by a staff consisting of
a full-time nurse, activity coordinators and persons who provide meals, caregivers can experience a
day of relief to catch up on sleep, shopping or other activities.
The Easterseals Memory Care program is only one of the many necessary services available through
Easterseals to meet the needs of aging citizens and their families.

From our beginnings when our founder, Edgar Allen,
worked to ensure services and supports were
available to children with disabilities and
throughout our 100-year history, Easterseals
has a legacy of championing issues to break
down barriers for people with disabilities.
Nationally, we have been a leading voice for
key disability rights laws like the Americans
with Disabilities Act, and the Rehabilitation
Act, and for protecting Medicaid-funded
services crucial to the families we serve.
Locally, most recently, Easterseals has worked
with our disability community to urge passage of the
Michael McNesby Full Funding for Adults with Intellectual/
Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) Act, a groundbreaking piece of legislation
committing Delaware to fully fund adult services so the direct care staff can earn a livable wage.
Current State funding of I/DD services only supports a $9.50 wage for direct care staff – far below what
is required to attract and train the quality workforce needed
to do these demanding jobs. While progress has been made
in funding thanks to the strong advocacy of our supporters
and families, more work is to be done to make sure the
funding gap can be closed.

Little Isaiah (shown above with his therapist, Jen Twining) stole the show as his mom, Latoya
Romeus (below), shared how Easterseals has given her a positive vision for her
son’s future.
We honored Rotary District 7630 for their dedication to Easterseals, especially Camp Fairlee. A former camper and counselor at Camp Fairlee, Kathy McCool (pictured on the left with the Past Rotary District Governor Pete Booker, and Easterseals
Board Member and Past Rotary
District Governor Roger Harrell),
shared how Camp helped shape her life.

It was an inspiring evening!
The 2019 Easterseals/CAI Volleyball Challenge raised nearly $300,000 with the support of
approximately 200 volunteers, generous corporate sponsors like our title sponsor, CAI, and countless supporters who played volleyball.
Our Volleyball Challenge ambassador families, Jackie, and her husband Jack,
(shown on left) and Isaiah, and his mom Latoya, (right) brought our mission to life
through their stories.
Our Walk With Me Delmarva event surpassed its goal once again this year,
raising more than $58,000 to support local services at Easterseals.
Thanks to Community Support!
