Earn 2 units of credit for full participation in the week’s learning. Soar with daily student-led davenen! Sign up to lead or co-lead, and receive feedback on new approaches from ALEPH teachers. SPECIAL THIS YEAR § NEW CONTENT AND APPROACHES Many of the classes offered this summer reflect new content and new approaches to traditional texts developed by VAAD members and invited guests. § WEEKDAY DAVENEN Smicha Week is a place for experimentation. We invite you to use the daily davenen leadership as a spiritual laboratory. Lead from your growing edge. How are you called to guide a community in the davenen experience? We are asking you to think in terms of different modalities and approaches, whether using the matbeah as your architectural framework or building your own path to present an experience of the deep structure of that moment of communal prayer. Experiment with meditation… silence… chant in a contemplative or ecstatic container. Make the best use of this laboratory. Faculty will provide the following for inspiration and guidance: Recommended readings: a chapter or two on davenology Helpful guidance: a short, to-the-point cheat sheet outlining matbeah essentials. Mentoring: Student davenen coordinator will have a list of faculty who are available to mentor this summer’s weekday davenen leaders. Choose a mentor based upon the type of service you wish to lead. Mentoring, feedback, and evaluation will come solely from the mentors you choose to work with. § ALL-NEW BEIT MIDRASH The Smicha Week Task Force and VAAD are designing an all-new Beit Midrash program that will bring together students from all programs, to study concepts and texts introduced by our faculty and intended not for specific classes but for the entire summer student body.

MORNINGANDAFTERNOONCLASSESIMPORTANT!StudentsareencouragedtocheckinwiththeirDOSpriortoregisteringforcoursesatSmichaWeek.ApplicantsmayconsulttheVAADmember/directorofstudieswhoistheirmaincontactintheapplicationprocess.Theschedulewillinclude3hoursoflearninginthemorningand3hoursintheafternoon,MondaytoFriday.Eachclassmeetsforatotalof15hoursandincludespre-retreatpreparation.TherewillbeNOpost-SWassignments(thatdeterminecredit-earning)beyondthe15hours.Studentsearn1unitofcreditperclass.Additionally,RabbiStevenSilvernwillofferanearly-morningstudyonceagain.Participationinthisstudygroupmayearnone-thirdcredit,withpermissionfromyourDOS,for5hoursofstudy(full-weekparticipationofonehoureveryday).EARLYMORNINGMISHNAYOTRabbiStevenSilvernAnhourbeforet’fillahthepiouspreparedtopray.Oneofthetraditionalmethodsofpreparationforshacharitwasthelearningofmishnayot.Wewillcontinuethistraditionbylearningtogetherforthehourbeforeshacharit(6amMountainTime).Thisyear’sportionwillbeChapter2ofMasechetShabbat,BaMehMadlikin.Ourmethodwillconsistof:
