LVEMP II – KENYA ROOF WATER HARVESTING PROGRAMME HELPS ALDAI GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL SOLVE THE SCHOOL ’S WATER PROBLEMS.

LVEMP II Kenya has undertaken Roof water harvesting in 20 Government institutions, the exercise has been completed and functional. This includes complete guttering of the roof surface area and installation of 10 thousand liters capacity plastic tanks in each of the 20 institutions. The Project has plans to add more institutions in the beneficiary list. Aldai Girls Secondary School is one of the institutions that have benefited from the programme. Currently water is a source of life at Aldai Girls Secondary School which is located in Ibanja sub location, Kaptumo North location, Nandi County.

According to Aldai Girls Principal Madam Perez Siele, the School witnessed cute water shortages particularly during dry spell and students and teachers would waste a lot of learning time in search of water. She added that due to such scenario, the experienced a lot of water borne related diseases and students would trek long distances to fetch water. She noted that the girls would consequently miss valuable lessons either fetching water for their use or hospitalized for treatment. She went on to say that the school’s locality experiences dry spell of 4 months annually between the months of December and April and the only source of water was the unprotected spring located approximately one kilometer from the school compound. This spring served both the students and the local community which led to the uncontrolled interaction between the local community and the girl students thus leading to indiscipline social behavior with inherent consequences.

Madam Perez said that funding from LVEMP II – Kenya has greatly helped the School solve its water woes adding that the conflict between students and the community on water is now drastically minimized. The Principal narrated that, through LVEMP II - Kenya support, they have been able to construct 180m3 underground masonry tank, undertaken guttered the School’s roofs for harvesting rain water, elevated two plastic water tanks of ten liters capacity each and installed a water pump; through LVEMP II – Kenya support worth Ksh 3.3M.

It is noteworthy that since the implementation of this project, the school community has been able to source water within the school compound, the health of the students has improved because no cases of water borne diseases have been reported, no much electricity cost is incurred by the school in pumping water from the river and the conflict between the school and the community has reduced. The run-offs from the roofs that used to be a problem with the School’s neighbours due to flooding contributing to soil erosion is no more now. She added that when the underground tank is full, the overflow has been piped and benefits the adjacent Aldai Primary School hence no wastages. Madam Perez Siele said that the entire Aldai Girls fraternities are grateful to LVEMP II Kenya for their support and urged the Project to consider other deserving cases. The School has since attracted several visitors who come to learn more and witness the School’s success story of roof water harvesting programme courtesy of LVEMP II - Kenya.
