A message from the Principal

A reminder to all students in Years 3 – 6 who are not involved in PSSA to ensure that your permission note is returned so that you can walk to Waites Park for sport tomorrow. We are utilising Waites Park, which is a short walk away down David St, so that we have more space for organised games. This will provide more opportunities for our students to develop skills in a sport of interest to them over a number of weeks.

On Friday 1 November, Sussan Ley, Federal Member for Farrer is visiting the school to officially open the new greenspace. Students are able to use this beautiful space for quiet activities and relaxation now and we look forward to the official opening. Now that Term 4 is here and the weather is warming up, all students and staff are expected to wear a school hat for all outdoor activities. The annexe front area has been opened up to provide more shaded and quiet areas for student interaction and recreation.

A huge thank you to Fiona, Lysa and the other volunteers who have made the beneficial bug garden a reality. A message from the Principal (continued)

The SRE providers for non-denominational Christian (Albury Christian Ministers Fellowship) are coordinating a one off SRE assembly in Week 3 for all students 3 – 6 who would like to attend. Currently, non-denominational SRE is not offered for this age group at Albury PS. A permission note has been sent home this week. The SRE assembly will be during current SRE/Ethics time. If you would like your child to attend, please complete the permission note and return it to school by Monday, 28 October.

All NSW Department of Education schools are on Inclosed Lands. The legislation is clear about principals restricting vehicles, including those belonging to parents/carers, from entering schools and staff car parks, following a number of deaths and near misses in schools around the state. It is very disappointing to have to report that a small number of parents/carers who access the OOSH service, are still ignoring the repeated requests from both the school and OOSH to not use the staff car park. Please refrain from entering the staff carpark (either on foot or in a vehicle) to drop off or pick up students BEFORE 4:30pm each day during the school term.

Please assist us to keep all students safe.

When you are next in town, head to MAMA to check out the artworks of our talented students in 5/6LS in the Nginhagu 'belonging to this place' exhibition! Nginhagu is the culmination of the 'HOME' Aboriginal language and art program, a collaboration between five local primary schools, the NSW Department of Education, MAMA and the Art Gallery of NSW. Well done 5/6LS and Mrs Power!

Twenty parents joined us at school on Tuesday night for a parent information session on Cybersafety with Senior Constable Tanya Thompson from NSW Police. Tanya shared some powerful cautionary tales and vital tips. Most importantly, she left us with the key take-home message that, as parents, we need to set firm boundaries to keep our children safe online, just as we do in every other facet of their lives. If you missed the session or would like more information, visit www.thinkuknow.org.au or the Office of the eSafety Commissioner, www.esafety.gov.au. Tanya has kindly agreed to come back next term to present a similar session for those who missed it this week. Cybersafty top tips can also be found on the schools website under “Notes for Parents”.

Tomorrow, Friday 25 October is World Teachers day. Held annually since 1994, World Teachers day commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the status of teachers. This Recommendation sets the benchmark for the rights and responsibilities of teachers for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment and teaching and learning conditions. In 2019, World Teachers day will celebrate teachers with the theme, “Young teachers: The future of the profession”. The day provides the occasion to celebrate the teaching profession worldwide, to take stock of achievements and to address some of the issues central for attracting and retaining the brightest minds and young talents in the profession.

Tomorrow, Friday, is also Grandparents day at Albury PS. Grandparents are invited to join us at school from 12:00 – 1:10pm and possibly even stay for recess to share a snack with the children. Please remember to bring a hat as some activities will be outside. Tea, coffee, scones and Anzac biscuits will be available in the gym for our visitors, not the students.

This year Albury Public School has created a staff team to support the Relay for Life. We are encouraging students who would like to participate to join us for the school lap at 11am on Saturday at Alexandra Park. All students will need to be supervised by an adult as there won’t be any teacher supervision provided during this time. We will meet under the Albury Public School Tent just before the lap at 10:45am. Fleur Curry will be the parent contact for the day. If you have any questions, please contact her on 0408 204 434.

Administration News

The student leader election process commences next week. Year 5 students aspiring to be Student Councillors will receive more information about leadership opportunities for 2020 this week. Year 5 students will be asked to nominate for student councillor on Monday 28 October and Tuesday 29 October, their nomination needs to be supported by two peers from either Year 5 or 6. The Principal, Deputy Principal and Stage 3 Assistant Principal will consider all nominations carefully. Nominating does not automatically secure a position as a candidate for Student Council. Candidates will then prepare a small poster about themselves and a 1 minute speech to present to Year 3, 4 and 5 in Week 4. Voting takes place for students in Years 3, 4 and 5 on Monday of week 5. If a student is absent, they will forego the opportunity to vote. All staff teaching, support and administrative, are eligible to cast a vote. Student and staff votes carry equal weighting.

Following student councillor elections, Year 5 students will then have the opportunity to nominate for sports house leader positions. Students nominating will need to have their nomination supported by one peer from Year 5 or 6. The Principal, Deputy Principal and Sports Coordinator will consider all nominations carefully. Nominating does not automatically secure a position as a candidate for House Leader. Candidates will prepare a 1 minute speech to their sports house during a sport meeting. Voting takes place for students in Years 3, 4 and 5 in house meetings. If a student is absent, they will forego the opportunity to vote.

Candidates for student councillor and house leader will be notified, if successful, by the Principal or delegate and names will be put in the school newsletter. Student leaders will also be formally announced at Presentation Day where they will receive their badges.

Quote of the week: “A teacher should inspire a child to reach academic success. A parent should inspire their child to use that success in a way that influences positive change in the world”. Anon

ROAD SAFETY

The roads surrounding the school are very busy and this is certainly evident before school and after

school. Unfortunately there have been some very unsafe practices exhibited by parents collecting their

children.

** PLEASE do not double park and let your children out of the car

** PLEASE do not park on the other side of the road and call your children across

the road.

** PLEASE do not park in the bus zones

** PLEASE set a great example to your children by crossing with the green lights

at traffic lights, if you need to cross the road.

Parking rangers will be around our school at some peak times.

Grandparents Day

Grandparents and visitors are invited to participate in Albury Public School’s Grandparents Day tomorrow, Friday 25 October at 12.00pm to 1.10pm. We hope that you can join us in the celebration of Grandparents and the wonderful contributions these people make in our lives and in the lives of our children. Stage based activities have been planned so that everyone can join in whether they have a special person visiting or not.

Kindergarten will be starting in the hall singing a selection of songs old and new. They will then return to their classrooms (located in the West) to create artworks with their grandparents and visitors.

Year 1 will be creating a memory page either with or about their grandparents or visitor., then visit the Book Corner to share stories, or play card games. This will take place in the Manor downstairs classrooms.

Year 2 will be interviewing and drawing portraits of/with their grandparents and visitors, then play card games. This will take place in the Manor Quad underneath the trees.

Year 3 and 4 will play old fashioned games: chess, knuckles, marbles, quoits, elastics, pickup sticks, or bocce, or conducting an interview with their grandparents and visitors. This will take place out the front of the manor and in the VC room.

Year 5 and 6 will start with their grandparents making paper planes in their classrooms and will move outside to the COLA and the block to measure how far they can fly them.

Grandparents and visitors are also invited to enjoy a cup of tea, coffee and refreshments from 12.00 to 1.00pm in the Gym. The refreshments are strictly for the grandparents only, NOT the students.

We look forward to seeing you there. All visitors are to sign in at the office and from there will be directed to the

appropriate area.

Owls in the Garden

We are very lucky at Albury Public School to have Mrs Power at our school.

Mrs Power helped us in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program.

She made two mobiles to scare away the crows and wild birds that were

eating our newly planted fresh produce in the SAKGP garden .

The Owls were made out of material found in the Creation Space. She cut out

round bodies and filled them with raffia and made

silver foil wings painted with acrylic paint. The nose

was raffia covered with plaster and painted yellow

and the eyes are CD discs, great to reflect the sun.

The beautiful Owls were created by Mrs Power to scare away the crows so they don’t eat our produce in the gar-

den . Alyssa Lambert 3/4CH

We love the owls and we all should thank Mrs

Power for making them.

We have been able to hang them up to keep the crows and

wild birds out of our garden.
