Welcome to the 2014 AABC (Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches) Senior All-Star Game! On behalf of our association, I would like to congratulate the 48 athletes and the eight coaches who have been selected to play in and coach these games. This is the fourth year in a row we have put on this great event. We are sincerely grateful to our sponsors and the coaches who have volunteered their time to make this game an event we can all be proud of.

Our association has the honor and distinction of promoting the game of basketball, the student-athletes, and the coaches in the great state of Alaska. Through this All-Star Game, we help complete part of our mission, and that is to honor and recognize players and coaches for their achievements and accomplishments in Alaska.

If you have the opportunity, please take some time and check out our web-site (www.alaskaabc.com) and see the direction our association is heading and has completed throughout the past five years. We also hope you will support the businesses that support us. Once again, we especially would like to thank Conoco Phillips; without their sponsorship, it would be very difficult to put on an event like this.

I would like to welcome and congratulate each of the players for their years of hard work and dedication. This Senior All-Star Game is only the beginning of many accomplishments to come. I wish you all luck in your future endeavors.

In addition to promoting the great sport of basketball, the AABC also supports local charities through Coaches for Compassion. Each year, we raise money and donate to a charitable organization that helps Alaskans in need. This year, we raised money on behalf of the American Cancer Society, Alaska branch, which is near and dear to my heart as my close friend and assistant battled through this horrible disease this past year. We hope that others will join us in this important cause.

Thank you to those who have supported othersin need.

As a 6-foot-1 center in the 1A girls class, Nianiella Dorvall could probably easily dominate the basketball and the scoring column. But there’s more to the game of the Nikolaevsk stand-out, her head coach Bea Klaich said recently.

“She’s an incredible team player. She could be dominating. She could be a one-dimensional player, but she’s an incredible team player,” Klaich said.

But Klaich is not the coach who understands Dorvall’s talents. The Nikolaevsk senior has been named the Alaska Roof Coat-ings/AABC 1A Girls State Player of the Year.

Klaich used the Los Angeles Lakers big man Pau Gasol as a way to describe Dorvall’s talents. Klaich said she’s not just a big athlete a coach sticks inside the paint.

“She’s got great post moves, great finesse. She can easily hit 15, 18-footers,” Klaich said. “She’s difficult to guard.”

Dorvall is averaging a double-double for Klaich’s squad, which just recently won a Peninsula Conference title. The se-nior is averaging 12.8 points and just about 10 rebounds per game. But that’s not all Dorvall can do. She has also has 64 assists, 47 steals and 41 blocks in 22 games.

“She’s been double and triple-teamed all season,” Klaich said. “She’s a great passer. When she’s double-teamed, it opens up the guards.”

A player with a different mentality, but with her talents, could easily hold on to the basketball and finish with the 20 or 30 points in a game.

“If she wanted to, she could,” Klaich said. “She’s very unself-ish. In 1A basketball size really makes a difference. Size can be very imposing.”

Klaich joked that she sometimes wishes Dorvall a little more

selfish sometimes, but continued to praise Dorvall’s character.

“She’s the nicest girl. She’s very kind, not mean spirited,” Klaich said.

Klaich has been coaching Dorvall since she was a third-grader and Dorvall has been a part of her high school team since she was an eighth-grader. Klaich said ASAA began allowing 1A programs to use eighth-graders when Dorvall hit the eighth grade.

“It wasn’t for that, we wouldn’t have had a team that year. We had three eighth-graders that year,” Klaich said.

Dorvall started as an eighth-grader, and has been a staple of the program ever since.

Klaich said Dorvall also excels in the classroom. The senior maintains a 4.0 grade point average and plans to pursue a ca-reer in medicine.

When Drew Carlos earned 2A player of the year honors toward the end of her junior sea-son, the Dillingham standout was certainly flattered. Carlos was the first Wolverine in school history to win the prize. As she moved into her senior year, repeating as the top player wasn’t at the top of the priority list.

It was business as usual for Carlos. She, once again, led Dillingham to the state tour-nament. And along the way, Carlos joined a select group of Alaska athletes

Carlos has been named the Alaska Roof Coatings/AABC 2A Girls State Player of the Year for the 2013-14 season. Carlos is the first player since Skagway’s Rose Frack-er (2008 and 2009) to be named the top 2A girls player in back-to-back years. She is only the third 2A girls player to earn the award multiple times.

“It’s a great honor. I think she’ll be tickled, but that wasn’t her goal coming into the sea-son, or even during the season,” said Sean Carlos, Dillingham’s head coach and Drew’s dad.

Sean Carlos said there were no expectations of repeating.

“Two times, that’s a hard one. It’s a tough thing to repeat in my opinion,” Sean Carlos said. “There’s so many players out there. Being out remote you don’t get the exposure that some kids on the road system do.”

Drew Carlos averages about 20 points per game for a Dillingham squad that recently won the Southwest Conference title earned its spot on the 2A state bracket. Sean Carlos said Drew has the potential to score 30 on any given night, but understands the big pic-ture, success as a team.

“She doesn’t care if she’s scoring 30, or if she’s scoring 20 and someone else is scor-ing the other 10,” Sean Carlos said. “She’s a good team player. When she scores 10 or 20, she’s going to create offense. Somebody is going to score.”

Dillingham can use the 5-foot-9 senior all over the floor. When Drew posts up, she’s a good rebounder, Sean said. She’s also a very good three-point shooter, who can handle the ball and see the court well.

“She does exceptionally well on the open floor,” Sean Carlos said. “She’s pretty ver-satile.”

This is Carlos’ second season at Dilling-ham. Last year she helped the Wolverines advanced to the 2A state title game. Craig edged Dillingham 31-29.

Before the Carlos family moved to Dilling-ham prior to her junior year, Drew Carlos helped lead Togiak to the state tournament as a sophomore.

ANCHORAGE — Dallas Dickerson has stood out during her four years with the Anchorage Christian School varsity team. But her time with the Lions started well before she entered the ninth grade.

Dickerson’s connection with the program dates back as early as the fifth grade. Now a senior Dickerson is among the most prolific scorers in the state at any level, and has been named the Alaska Roof Coatings/AABC 3A Girls Player of the Year.

“She was kind of on the radar as a fifth-grader,” ACS head coach Darrin Powers said recently. “In a spring league, we didn’t have enough players. She played as a fifth-grader on (junior varsity). A fifth-grader, she was the best player.”

Today, the point guard, who can also play shooting guard, is within reach of the 2,000-point mark for her career, a milestone most shooters can only dream of. Dickerson enters the 2014 3A girls state tournament with 1,949 career points, leaving her 51 away from the 2,000-point mark.

During the regular season, Dickerson averaged 22.2 points per game. She kept on that pace with 22.6 points per game during the Southcentral Conference Cham-pionships in Cordova, en route to leading her team to the conference crown. Powers said Dickerson’s ability to score against the team’s toughest competition of the season is impressive. Dickerson netted 26 points against Kodiak, the top 4A team in the state. She finished with 27 against Colony, a 4A state tournament qualifier. Her season-high of 29 came against 4A Chugiak.

“Whatever we need, that’s what she’s going to give us. She’s always been that way,” Powers said.

Powers, Dickerson’s head coach throughout her four-year career, said the senior can score in a variety of

ways. She’s good in transition, Powers said, and has a knack for finding high-percentage shots.

“She’s so good in the open floor,” Powers said.Dickerson came off the bench in her first career game, Powers said, and scored 17. She’s been a starter at ACS ever since.

Powers said Dickerson also does much of her work in three quarters. The Lions have been successful enough to rest standouts during the final period.

“She does all of this in basically three quarters,” Powers said.

Powers also praised Dickerson’s efforts off the court. Dickerson maintains a 3.85 grade point average, and is a regular volunteer in community organizations.

When Amy Fogle’s Kodiak Bears squad won the 2001 state title, she had a lightning fast point guard, Geoffrey Agmata, who helped lead the Bears to the 4A boys championship.

Fogle is now the head coach of the Kodiak girls squad. And it’s not until now that Fogle has run across another point guard who displays that type of speed and skill.

This year, as Fogle has watched senior point guard Jerica Nelson lead the undefeated Bears into the state tournament, Fogle can’t help but compare her to Agmata.

“I’ve had one other great point guard,” Fogle said, in reference to Agmata. “He just did some amazing things. I’ve been watching a little film on him. (Jer-ica is) just so similar to Geoffrey. Unfortunate for him, he didn’t have much size. She doesn’t either, but it doesn’t affect her as much in the girls game. The quickness is just amazing.”

The 5-foot-4 Nelson is one of five players who have been named to the first team of the Alaska Roof Coatings/AABC 4A Girls All-State Basketball Team. The Kodiak senior joins West Anchorage’s Chanel Bookert, West Valley’s Ruthy Hebard, Di-mond’s Tara Thompson and Kodiak teammate Han-nah Wandersee on the first team. Bookert is the 2014

player of the year, finishing just ahead of Nelson in the voting.

Nelson recently helped lead Kodiak to its first North-ern Lights Conference title since 1985. Entering the tournament, Nelson was averaging 11 points, four assists, four steals and two rebounds per game. But Nelson’s impact on the court goes far beyond the statistics.

“She’s just a true point guard,” said Fogle, who was named the 2014 coach of the year. “Her quickness is just amazing. She plays defense. She can get inside and play with the big ones. She can get outside and hit a jump shot. She’s been a total pleasure to coach all year.”

Klawock head coach Doug Edenshaw de-scribes Tyrus Morgan as a humble kid. The Klawock senior has humility, but that doesn’t mean he’s not prone to shine.

Morgan dazzled Chieftains fans on the team’s senior night with a dozen slam dunks. He posted a triple-double that night, finishing with 30 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists. It was a nice farewell to the home fans for a small forward who has been a staple in the Klawock School program since he was an eighth-grader. But his work on the court is far from done. Edenshaw sees Morgan as a legitimate college basketball prospect. Alas-ka coaches see him as the best player at the 1A level. Morgan has been named the Alaska Roof Coatings/AABC 1A Player of the Year.Morgan, the centerpiece of Klawock’s 2013 1A title winning team, may be the best player in 1A, but Edenshaw believes Morgan could hold his own at any level in the state.

“I’ve seen a lot of 4A players, some players who have been at the tournament in Ket-chikan,” Edenshaw said, referring to the annual Clark Cochran Classic. “He’s got a lot more talent than some of the 4A players I’ve seen. We’re fortunate to have him down here.”

The 6-foot-4 small forward is averaging 24 points, 14 rebounds and six assists a game this season.

“He’s got a great work ethic and it’s amazing to see this young man work so hard to get to

the level he’s at,” Edenshaw said.

Edenshaw said Morgan can make an impact in a variety of ways.

“He’s just an all-around player. He’s got eyeballs that go everywhere. He sees every-thing and makes the right moves on defense,” Edenshaw said.

On the other side of the floor, Edenshaw said Morgan can hurt opponents in different ways.“He can finish around the bucket. He can shoot outside,” Edenshaw said.

Morgan finished as the runner-up for the player of the year award last season. This is the second straight year that Morgan has been named first-team all-state.

Theodore Naneng is among the top players in the deepest pool of talent Alaska 3A basketball fans have seen in years. But when it comes to scoring on the basketball court, the Bethel se-nior has entered a league of his own.

In late February, during a win over Kotzebue, Naneng scored the 1,500th point of his high school career.

“I don’t know if there is another boy in the state right now who has scored that many points in their career,” Bethel head coach Dave Cronk said recently. “It’s a huge accomplishment.”

Naneng is one of five players selected to the first team of the Alaska Roof Coatings/AABC 3A Boys All-State Basketball Squad. Naneng is joined by Monroe Catholic’s Scooter By-num, Anchorage Christian’s Calvin Hoffman, Nome’s Tyle Eide and Monroe’s David Stepo-vich on the first team. Bynum, Monroe’s all-around talent, finished just ahead of Naneng in the voting, and was named the Alaska Roof Coatings/AABC 3A Boys Player of the Year. Longtime Grace Christian head coach Chuck Boerger, who will hang up his whistle and re-tire from coaching after the state tournament, was named the 3A coach of the year.

Before Naneng was officially tabbed as a first-team all-state player, the Bethel senior was putting his stamp on school history. Cronk said

he believes nobody has ever scored more while wearing a Warrior uniform.

“I asked our (activities director Billy Strick-land). He’s been here forever. He couldn’t re-call that ever happening before,” Cronk said of a Bethel player hitting the 1,500-point mile-stone. “He’s a four-year starter for us. He’s been a big part of our program for four years, a big part of the success we’ve had.”

Naneng recently led the Warriors to their sec-ond conference title. He was also named most valuable player in his conference.

Cronk said Naneng lines up at the small for-ward position, but plays like a guard.

“We don’t have any real big kids. We run about four guards and one kind-of big guy,” Cronk said.

But regardless of position, Cronk said the 6-foot-1 Naneng will do whatever the team needs him to do.

Naneng scored 27 points to help Bethel beat Nome in the conference title game recently.

“He comes up big when we need him to,” Cronk said. “We get him the ball in the middle, he makes things happen. We can’t get him in the middle, he pops out and gets the ball on the perimeter. He scores inside and out, defends well and rebounds well.”

As the son of the basketball coach, Gage Ivanoff has spent his life on the hardwood. Long before Ivanoff reached the high school level, he stood side-by-side with his father, as his dad’s, “little assistant.”

Ivanoff has evolved into one of the top players and leading scorers of the 2A class. The Unalakleet standout is one of five players named to the first team of the Alaska Roof Coatings/AABC 2A Boys All-State Basketball Team.

But there was a time in which Ivanoff was forced to put his basketball career on hold. While on a trip to Reno, Nev., with family, Ivanoff suffered serious injuries as a spectator of a plane crash during the Reno Air Races, Sept. 16, 2011.

According to news reports, a North American P-51D Mustang named The Galloping Ghost, a plane flown by pilot James Leeward, crashed into the crowd. The pilot and 10 spectators died. Ivanoff was one of 69 injured, Ivanoff’s father, Steve Iva-noff said recently.

“We were going crazy wondering what happened,” Steve Ivanoff recalled of the incident. Steve was home in Alaska, while Gage made the trip with relatives.

“Six hours of not knowing how he was,” Steve said. “It was crazy.”

Gage, watching from the box seats during the air show, was struck by debris from the crash. He was hospitalized with a scarred kidney and bruised lung.

“He was really fortunate to have left the crash,” Iva-noff said of his son, who was 15 at the time.

The recovery slowed his progress. Gage spent mul-tiple days in the hospital, and it took time to recover from his injuries.

But Gage is back on the floor. He’s among the top scorers at the 2A level, averaging about 20 points per game. He also helped his team advance to the 2A state tournament.

“We had to back off, but we’re making up for lost time now,” Steve said.

Steve said Gage has developed into a player who scores in a variety of ways. He’s a quality shoot-er, and at 6-foot-2, Unalakleet can use Gage in the paint as well. Steve said Gage has, “good hops,” and dunks the ball with ease.

Unalakleet has played a demanding schedule, Steve said. The team has played 4A schools such as Ko-diak and Soldotna, and 3A programs like Bethel, Nome and Kotzebue.

“The big schools, they’re focused on him, “ Steve said of Game.

Despite all the attention from opposing defense, Gage continues to have success, Steve said. Gage also leads the team in rebounds and blocked shots.

Last season, he was named all-tournament after helping lead his team to a fourth-place finish in the 2A state tournament.

Serious injuries suffered as a plane crash spectator have not slowed Unalakleet standout

Colony senior Damien Fulp is making his third straight trip with the Knights to the state tournament in Anchorage. But even though this is the final weekend of Fulp’s high school career, this won’t be the last time Anchorage fans see the 6-foot-1 standout guard. Next year, Fulp will be wearing a different shade of green as a member of the UAA men’s bas-ketball team.

The UAA-recruit is one of five players select-ed to the first team of the Alaska Roof Coat-ings/AABC All-State Basketball Team. Fulp joins Service’s Reece Robinson, West Val-ley’s Travon Brackett, East’s Desmond John-son and West’s Deandre Wilson on the first team. Robinson is the Alaska Roof Coatings/AABC All-State Basketball 4A Boys Player of the Year, edging Fulp for the honor.

As Fulp was preparing for the start of his se-nior season, he was finalizing his plans for the next level of basketball, inking his National Letter of Intent to play for the Seawolves in November of 2013.

Colony head coach Tom Berg said it was a great move for Fulp and great addition for the Seawolves. When looking at the positives and negatives, Berg said Fulp really couldn’t find much, if anything at all, that was negative.

“When we sat down and looked, there weren’t many cons,” Berg said recently. “We sat down, and said, what’s good about it? Style of play, excitement for the new arena, the op-

portunity to play right away, the opportunity to train without having to worry about flying down to get someplace. In the spring, when they’re having their workouts, he can get into Anchorage and really get after it.”

Fulp was recently named the Northern Lights Conference Player of the Year for the second straight season. Fulp is averaging just about a dozen points for the Knights, the 2014 NLC runner-up. He’s also among team leaders in assists and steals, and is viewed as a top three-point threat in the conference.
