Jimmy Buffet may have been “Wastin’ away again in Margaritaville,” but for the enthusiastic partiers at ABYC’s“Marcharitaville” that definitely wasn’t the case. They ate,

We are on the home stretch with the Basin and Yard construction! Please be sure to thank John Merchant, Ron Wood, Bob Bishop, Keith Dodson, Chuck Clay and Latham Bell for an incredible job. So far, we are on-budget and on-time and the results are

beautiful. It was not without a lot a sweat equity and an incredible amount of time and dedication!By the time we’re finished, we will have moved all the boats in the yard how many times? Fourtimes! Thank you to all the wonderful members that gave their time to move all the boats. I knowI experienced a few blisters from pushing Lasers and Lidos back and forth. But the results areworth the effort and we will all be ableto enjoy the new yard and new docks

for many years to come.At the Board meeting, we discussed the need to protect

the yard. The Board passed a new yard rule requiring use of clubapproved chocks for all the trailers in the big boat yard. Lido’s andother dinghy’s already use saw horses for their trailers. For railriders, please use saw horses, we will not allow trailers to be upon the new railing.

Many thanks for to the Rich Vaught and the Etchells andViper fleets for hosting the Manning Regatta. A big Pacific stormrolled through that weekend and created enormous waves in theharbor and off Seal Beach. PRO Chuck Tripp made the decisionto race all classes in the bay. And, as we watched from the seconddeck waves crashing into the jetty and onto the beach, we knewhe’d make the correct decision. The weather leg in the bay wasstretched as far as possible with the weather mark set near ourflag pole in the jetty. With no traffic (other than LBYCs Cat 37sracing in the Butler Cup), it made for a great course. We wereable to complete three races until the lightning and thunder beganand PROs called it a day.

Saturday night the end of the peninsula flooded. Seawater flooded over the muni parking lot and into our boat yardbut not into the club. Unfortunately, several houses near us were flooded, including the garage of our club bookkeeperJenny. (Jenny said she was lucky as most of her boxes were stored on a trailer so she didn’t have much damage.) Rick saidhe saw a fish trapped in water on Ocean Blvd. Steve and I found sea weed around the telephone pole by the electronicgate.

Sunday of Manning was the exact opposite. As the front had gone through, we didn’t have any wind. After severalhours of postponement, we were able to run two short races to complete the series! Great job Martyn Bookwalter andChuck Tripp!

Many thanks to the Multihull, Viper and 505 fleets for hosting the March General Membership Meeting. Fantasticprogram by Pete Melvin about the America’s Cup and the boat design of the huge AC75s. Also, they gave us a pre-view ofthe next AC designs. This was our first meeting with a guest chef. Chef Rick Hardsey cooked a great halibut meal. I’d reallylike your feedback over the next few months about the food. We are in a period of transition since Jesus’s retirement andwant to find the right fit for our club. The plan is to try a few new things in the kitchen over the next few months before wedecide what is best. So, please voice (or email) your opinion to me or other Board members. The BOD agreed thatmembers are allowed to volunteer to cook for any event. So, if you’re interested in showing off your cooking skills, we’dwelcome you back into the kitchen.

At the meeting, Jeff McDermaid, demonstrated the “new” Sou’Wester! We’re going high-tech and will be providingan on-line version of the Sou’Wester that has high resolution photographs and short videos. We will still be printing theSou’Wester but only a limited quantity for members who are unable to access the online version. Moving to the on-line hightech production is estimated to save the club over $8,000 a year. Jeff also announced that we will be printing the roster. Itwill be available for purchase through the office. PLEASE check the data listing in the on-line roster to be sure your phonenumbers and email addresses are correct. If you don’t know how to update it, please call Sheila in the office for assistance.

April 4 we are planning a special Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Basin. Ceremony will be at 1900 (7 PM). Similarto 1964 when the club was established in its current location, we are going to celebrate our new Basin and Yard bysplashing a little champagne! We will also be naming the new Junior rib (and perhaps splashing some champagne on hertoo) and re-dedicating the compass rose at its new location.

Looking ahead, Lido twilights begin April 3, CISA will be a the club from April 4 – 8, Easter Brunch April 20, SpringSpruce-Up April 26 and 27 and the Raft-Up Party May 2 , Opening Day/Club Championship May 3!

I was down at the club the other weekend, working on removing the storage box that we storeall of the tetrahedron marks in, in preparation for the repair and slurry seal in the parkinglot and east yard. One thing that I reflected on when I got home to take a shower to remove

all of the dust, termites and just plain old dirt, was how fortunate we are to have such a great clubto enjoy, along with all of the dedicated and hard working volunteers that make it so great.

It is truly amazing and inspiring how the volunteers come and pitch in to do whateverneeds to be done. I am the board liaison for the yard resurfacing project, and with all of the workrequired to get the yard cleaned up, it has really opened up my eyes to how many membersvolunteer for these projects. It is the “same old group” of dedicated ABYC members that bear theload. All I can say is that EVERYTIME I leave the club after doing something to improve ABYC

and it’s members it puts a smile on my face! This is going to be your first electronic Sou’wester! As Jeff explained at the membership meeting (if you missed it,

shame on you!) Jeff demonstrated how the new online Sou’wester is going to work…very cool! You can still get a hardcopy if you are unable to get it on line. If you have any questions on how to view the SW please call Jeff, he can walk youthrough the very simple process. Jeff, great job on the research and execution.

Guys, we are down to the final push to complete the yard parking lot and basin remodel. By the time you read thiswe will almost be complete. On april 9th and 10th we are scheduled to dense pack the yard for the last time. If we can getenough people down to help, we are hoping that we can get it completed on the 9th; if not we will finish up on the 10th. Thefinal slurry coat will be applied on the 11th, then we will move the boats back for the final time on April 13-15th. This will takea little longer as we will be taking our time not to damage the new asphalt and stripping.

Which brings up my next point. WE, all the members of ABYC have just spent a very large amount of money torepave the yard and parking lot to a condition that we have been waiting for a ling time. (Note; we were able to avoid amember assessment, as we were able to use Capital Funds that applied to our lease obligations!) Our goal now is tomaintain the yard in such a manner that it will serve us for many years in the future. This will take effort from every yardmember (or non-yard members), to keep their area clean and to follow the yard rules and bylaws that clearly outline whatis allowed and what is not.

We have also identified a load bearing wheel chock that will protect the asphaltfrom getting compromised from the weight of the front wheel on the heavier boats(Olson 30, E-22, C-25, Vipers, Tempest, C-20, etc..). As I mentioned at the lastmembership meeting, the Board of Directors has identified a wheel chock that hasbeen tested and approved that will be installed on heavier boats when they aremoved back into their permanent assigned spots. These chocks are very durableand will last a long time if they are properly cared for. Once the chock is installed, you will be invoiced for the amount of $15.00. The board felt that this was a positiveway to keep the yard looking good and uniform for years to come. If you need toreplace your wheel chock, you can get a replacement from the office and we willconveniently charge your account. This is a nominal cost in keeping our yard lookingthe best it can and to postpone expensive repairs in the future.

Spring Spruce up is coming up fast and we have identified the projects thatwe want to tackle this year. Please review the list and letme know if you are interested in helping on any of these projects. It is a great way to put a little “sweat equity” back into the club. Here are the projects that we are going to take on this year: paintthe inside perimeter wall and behind the vertical laser rack, re-setpaving stones on patio, manicure all flower beds and plants, cleantrophies, paint hand rail leading upstairs, paint outside of all of thecontainers in the east yard, deep clean and organize the racecontainer, remove old speaker wires from the outside of the club, remove old tint on bar sliding door, deep clean bar and servingfloor, deep clean whalers, re-wire outdoor paging system, cleanand oil Ken Hodges table on patio,, paint upper deck, and prepand varnish fly bridge trim on Patience. So, as you can see, wehave many diversified projects for EVERYONE so don’t forget tosign up!SAC has been doing an amazing job with all of the events that

have been going on around the club. Come on down and enjoythem all! Keep an eye on the website, new electronic SW and the

weekly reader so you don’t miss out. Even better, bring down someone that hasn’t been down to the club so you can showit off, who knows they may even want to join!

Remember ABYC is THE place to BE…Cheers,Chuck Clay

The Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) purchased for the ABYCJunior Program coaches is just about ready to hit thewater. Our RIB has been nicely refurbished, cleaned

and prepared by Eric Redmond. The formerly matte black outboard motor is now

painted sleek silver while the inflatable bladder portion ofthe hull is resplendent in new canvas chaps generouslyprovided by Jerry Thompson.

While we add the Junior RIB to our fleet, Kelly Whitlowhas been able to sell the derelict Whaler Four and trailer to make space in the boatyard.Once the yard repaving and boat moving projects are complete and Rick and Eric geta chance to breathe again, we can focus on getting all our whalers and Junior Programsailboats in Bristol condition for opening day.

The Junior Board & Fleet hosts this month’s General Meeting on Friday, April18, with speaker Willie McBride. Willie splits his time between coachingSouthern California’s elite junior 29er sailors, including our own Riley Gibbs,

and his own 49er campaign for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janiero. Willie wasborn into a sailing family in Santa Barbara and lived on a boat the first few years ofhis life. Willie currently serves as the Junior Director of the Santa Barbara Youth Sailing Foundation where he hashelped sailors achieve victories in the SCYYRA Ullman/Frost, Perry and SoCal Series. He graduated in 2012 from UCSBwith a degree in geographic remote sensing, which he has put to work in sailing by building an algorithm which used a fullyautomated process to extract draft stripes from a sail, and quantitatively evaluate sail shape. Come learn all there is toknow about 29er and 49er racing and Willie’s campaign with Dane Wilson for their quest for the gold in 2016 in Rio.

The Junior Fleet is busy with other upcoming events. All juniors are invited to help out with ABYC’s Easter Brunchon April 20. Younger juniors will help out at Spring Spruce Up, while the high schoolers travel to San Diego and SanFrancisco for the PCISA PCCs on April 26-27. Juniors also work Opening Day and will host a vintage bake sale at theLaser NAs in June. We like to see as many juniors as possible at these events, so if your junior hasn’t been down to theclub this winter, now is the time to join in and get ready for summer!

The Sail Recycling program continues. We just received a new batch of really great gear from Sea Bags of Maine, made from our very own recycled sails. These items are for sale in the ABYC boutique and at general meetings and otherevents. You may donate your old sails any time by simply dropping them off at the recycle bin in the Junior Room. Yourparents or spouse will thank you for finally getting rid of those old sails that are cluttering up the garage!

Wilson High School Wins Gaucho Regatta Sixty-two teams traveled to Santa Barbara the weekend of March 15-16 to compete in the Gaucho Regatta put on by UCSB and Santa Barbara Yacht club. The weekend proved to have beautiful summer like weather. Temperatures

were in the low 80’s and the breeze was 6-12 knots. The conditions proved to be just what the Wilson Sailing Team neededfor a win! After a huge learning curve at the Treasure Island Regatta with two team members skippering for the first time in aHS regatta, and competing in the Gold Division, the team rallied to win the Silver division at the Gaucho Regatta. Throughoutthis season, Wilson team members, practice two days a week and sometimes have a weekend practice. Sailors in LBUSDmust still carry a PE class through their sophomore year. This is very different from other school districts who allow sailing asPE credit. This means that some of Wilson’s sailors compete in other team sports for Wilson. Dividing practice time betweensports has been a challenge for the team. Schedules have been worked out, sailing practices are well attended and the teamis sailing fast. At the Gaucho Regatta, the Division A skipper was Sawyer Gibbs with me as his crew. We started off theweekend with a fifth and a second. Division B skipper, Jack Berg (LBYC), with crew Ryan Schack followed with a second anda first. The first round set the tone for the weekend. Team members Cameron Thompson, Alexis Hall and Kyle Cater rotatedin as crews throughout the weekend. Winning the silver division at the Gaucho Regatta boosted the team’s confidence levelgoing into the PCC’s. We qualified to compete in the Gold Division at the PCC’s in San Diego at the end of April. Uponreturning to school on Monday, we were congratulated during morning announcements at Wilson. Hopefully, winning theGaucho Regatta and being recognized on campus as a team sport will create more interest in sailing and the team at Wilson.

Wilson sailing team members are Sawyer and Riley Gibbs, Alan Peoples, Ryan Schack, Kyle Cater, CameronThompson, Alex Van Dyke, Trent Turigliatto, Gentry Bell and Alexis Hall.

Smooth sailing!Alan Peoples

February 22nd and 23rd the Poly High School Sailing Team took a road trip all the way to San Francisco for Golden BearRegatta. We sailed out of Treasure Island and we got to use brand new sails from PCISA, which was fantastic. Theconditions started off a bit light but both days the wind picked up as the day went on, which suited us just fine. We

scored, for the most part, consistently top ten. I crewed for Luke Van Lant in A Rotation, and Meredith Dobson crewed formy older sister Emily Golison in the B Rotation. Our ending result was first in the Silver Fleet, and we all had a great time.Golden Bear was definitely a success.

reportmembership

The ABYC Bucks membership drive ended on March 21. Congratulations to John Gresham, who was the winner in the drawing for the Bucks that was held at the last GeneralMembership meeting.

The discounted initiation fee of $500 for regular members remains in effect throughopening day. Take advantage of this great opportunity to bring in new members to a sparklingnew basin and yard. With the re-striping of the yard we will likely end up with a few more “railrider” spots available. A lot of new member inquiries ask about boat storage. If you know acandidate that wants to join a club and get a spot in the yard, bring them on down!

Ukulele classes continue to have a good turnout on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of themonth from 6:30 until 8:30p.m. The cost is $5.00 per session. Every lesson starts with basicbeginning instruction which means you can start as a new beginning player at any time.

New Member Orientation meetings continue under the direction of Commodore JenniferKuritz, and the next orientation is scheduled for Sunday, April 13th at 10:00 a.m. on thequarterdeck. We have had a lot of positive feedback from these meetings that give newmembers an opportunity to meet Club Officers, get an overview of club activities and receiveinformation about ABYC and how the club works.

The Board of Directors has approved the following new member applicants for posting:Joseph Barbeito, Regular , sponsor Will Vrooman; Robert (Rob) Lyddon, Regular, sponsor Steve Smith; John Horton,Junior, sponsor Steve Rosenberg; Julia Jaynes, Junior, sponsor Mark Golison; Joseph Hou, Junior, sponsor Kelli Clinton.

Congratulations to ABYC’s new Regular Members John McKenney, Stephen Mueller, Jamie Reid, and CameronPuckey, who were approved at the March board meeting. And to our new Junior members Michael Sabourin, D’amySteward, and Adam Rosales also approved for membership.

If you have a candidate for membership that would like a tour of the club or are ready to get started in the membershipapplication process, contact Membership Chairman Dana Bell at [email protected] or Cindy Heavrin [email protected].

After serving many years as Chief Judge for ABYC, Margaret, or Maggie as many have come to know her, has turnedover the reins of Chief Judge to Ron Wood.Margaret began as a Sailing Judge at ABYC some 15-20 years ago (my source was not entirely clear on exact

dates). She then qualified as an on-the-water Umpire, becoming the first female in this capacity on the West coast for anumber of years. Margaret became a fixture of Judging on the West coast for many events, including two straight years asChief Judge for the U.S. SAILING Women’s Championships in both San Diego and San Francisco. In addition to performingas Chief Judge for women’s events, she initiated a How to Become a Judge course at Newport Harbor Yacht Club.

Margaret’s efforts on behalf of racing sailors in Southern California have been recognized, as she has been honoredat our most recent 87th Commodore’s Installation Dinner with the Sidney T. Exley Trophy for her sailing accomplishments, race management excellence and outstanding contributions to yachting and sportsmanlike conduct. She is ABYC membernumber two and was one of the original members of ABYC. The Association of San Pedro Bay Yacht Clubs recognized heras 2011 Yachtswoman of the Year and the Southern California Yachting Association awarded her with the 2005 Peggy SlaterMemorial Trophy, for “outstanding contributions to the enhancement of women’s participation in sailing or individual achievementin the sport of sailing.”

Advancing her expertise, Margaret is currently a National Judge, which is a step above a Sailing Judge, which is“qualified to judge any local or regional event in the US”. A National Judge; however, “is qualified to judge a regatta of anysize anywhere in the US. To be certified as a National Judge, a Judge must have additional national and/or internationalexperience.”

Though Margaret has passed on the responsibilities of Chief Judge at ABYC, she very much wishes to continueparticipation on-shore as a Judge in our regattas at ABYC.

We owe a debt of gratitude to Maggie over these many years for her pursuit of knowledge and expertise regardingthe often changed and complex Racing Rules of Sailing as well as her unselfish volunteer efforts to guide us through numerousProtest Hearings at ABYC and elsewhere.

Laser and Radial Racing Clinic April 13th Following on our successful Laser Racing Clinic in January, Allie Blecher and the ABYC Laser Fleet are hosting another Laser and Laser Radial Race Clinic on Sunday April 13th.

This Clinic will emphasize coaching for adult Women and Men; beginner, advanced and expert Laserand Radial sailors.

The Clinic will begin at 8:30 AM at ABYC. Look for the Clinic flyer elsewhere in this issue of the Sou’Wester. Wedo ask all attendees to contribute $5.00 to offset the cost of running the whalers.Contact Allie at (562) 434.9955 ext. 22 or [email protected] to let us know you will be joining us.Lasers and Radials Compete in the Manning Regatta

The 2014 E. E. Manning Regatta was a mixed affair. The weather greeting sailors arriving Saturday morning wasdark and blustery while the small craft advisory banner flew from the Marine Department. The conditions and predictedconditions caused the Race Committee to keep all racers inside the more sheltered waters of Alamitos Bay.

This decision promised to make things interesting as we would be sharing the confined waters of the Bay with 31aggressively raced CFJ’s, 9 Sabots and 5 Lidos. The fleet of 9 Laser full rigs decided to pass on racing in the Bay andsailed out to practice their skills in the open waters of the Ocean. We Laser Radial racers lined up to race on a windward leeward course with the windward mark set in the channel adjacentto the ABYC flagpole. Radials were able to complete three races in quick succession in full hiking conditions and winddriven waves that even allowed a bit of surfing downwind.

As we waited for the start of a fourth race, we heard a thunderclap. I, having experienced numerous thunderstormssailing on Colorado lakes, headed for shore. As I reached the beach, I could see everyone else had the same idea, including the Race Committee that cancelled racing for the day.

On Sunday racing had to wait until about 2:00PM when a light breeze filled in enough for the Lasers and Radialsto have two races on the Ocean course while a trio of Radials from Dana Point YC were able to complete four races on theBay. Sawyer Gibbs was winner in the Radial fleet, while Vann Wilson was top ABYC finisher in the Laser fleet.Vann Wilson Wins the Jeff Adams Memorial Regatta

Kris Hublitz is the force behind resurgent Laser racing at Dana Point YC and along with his daughter Emily hasraced with us at ABYC. Recently Kris invited Laser and Radial racers to the Dana Point YC Jeff Adams Memorial Regatta.Kris even offered the use of a Laser to anyone interested in competing in the regatta. Well, Vann Wilson jumped on theopportunity and took Kris up on the offer to use his boat. A nice turn-out of 22 Lasers and Radials came to race and Iunderstand from Kris’ report, the breeze died half way through race one, but filled in nicely for four additional races.Congratulations on your victory Vann.Press Release from U.S. SAILING

The Press Release below from U.S. SAILING is helping us promote the International Laser Class AssociationNorth American Championship and U.S. Singlehanded Championship Men’s and Women’s Divisions at ABYC this comingJune 12-15.Taking a New Tack in Singlehanded Sailing

US Sailing is taking a new tack to some of its championships. For the first time, a US Sailing National Championshipwill be integrated as part of a larger class event. The 2014 Laser North Americans will be the host of the U.S. SinglehandedChampionship, and the top eligible male Laser and female Radial sailor will be named United States Singlehanded Champion. The regatta will be hosted by the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club on June 12-15 in Long Beach, Calif.

Athletes competing at the 2014 U.S. Singlehanded Championships will get a golden opportunity to race against atalented collection of the top Laser sailors in the world. With the growth of one-design sailing here in the U.S, and with evermore events in the sailing calendar, it became clear to US Sailing that the traditional qualifying series was limiting thenumber of sailors who could compete for the O’Day and Hanley Trophies. Our goal is to allow more people to have achance to compete for these historic championships. As the Laser class isone of the largest singlehanded classes in the world, identifying the topU.S. Singlehanded sailor through the North Americans is a natural fit.

Who is eligible to be named U.S. Singlehanded Champion? Sailorsmust be at least 17 years of age in the calendar year and current membersof US Sailing and the Laser class. All the sailors will be scored as one fleetwith the highest eligible male Laser sailor winning the O’Day Trophy andthe highest female Radial sailor winning the Hanley Trophy. KEEL BOAT FLEET ON WATCH

Sabotiers, the basin and boat ramp are operational just in time for spring and summer sailing. Our April Sabot Sunday is scheduled for April 13th. For those of us who have not been traveling for regattas it’s time to dust off that boat cover, wash the spiders out of their hiding places, and

go sailing.Remember to join INSA, the form can be found at: http://www.naples-sabot.org/, look under the tab “Membership”.

Also in April, SDYC has “Men’s Mayhem” on the 19th. Looking ahead, Sabot Sunday at ABYC will be on May 4th, and don’tforget the Memorial Day Regatta.

As always we are looking for help on the barge and in the whaler. We hope to see everyone in April and enjoy a dayof racing followed by happy hour and dinner at the club.

Jane McNaboe

Not too many years ago the standing Commodore came to our second Friday of the month Keel Boat Fleet meeting and informed the KB Fleet of a new social event for ABYC. The new event was, and is, called ‘Happy Hour’ which happens every Friday night. The Commodore assured the Fleet that our

meetings would continue as they normally would and the door to the bar plus the folding divider to the fireplaceroom would be in place. We would be able to have the table area and the dance floor area would be setup for

our traditional ‘pot luck dinners’. Well ‘Happy Hour’ has become very successful and yes our Fleet members enjoy the‘Happy Hour’ but our hold fast meeting dates were pre-empted by a subsequent Commodore for his ‘thank you party’. Theclosed door and the folding divider have both disappeared and we now share the tables with the H H celebrates. Heck, wealso enjoy the $5 gourmet repast as the ‘pot luck dinner’ has also disappeared, probably went with the Bar door and thefolding divider. As to holding a meeting, well not too bad normally, however the recent ‘swing dance class’ managed to beloud enough to keep any of the KB Fleet from hearing Joe Ridick so we folded our tent and left.

THE GOOD NEWS is our next KB Fleet meeting is on the patio, and in the ¼ deck, and will be our traditional bar bcue party. The date is May 9 and the Fleet will supply a green salad, a potato salad, chips and salsa plus plastic plates, cups, etc. Please bring something to bar b cue, (bar be cue tools provided), plus your libation. This meeting is always lotsof fun and we will talk about our plans for next fall. As this is the last meeting before our summer break lets hope for a greatturnout.

See you there, George

The sailing was a little light for a while there, but we made great use of our time. Cindy Heavrin, Kathy Reed, and Dana Bell, were extraordinary in spearheading our gatherings at ABYC. For example, they organized several Swing Dancing Lessons and a Valentine’s Day Themed Happy Hour, where we

played the “Not-So-Newly-Wed Game.” This is a huge effort to keep the ABYC Happy Hours alive in betweenGeneral Membership Meetings, and other club events. We’ve also acquired a couple of new members in our

spare time, and would like to welcome Chris Cranner & Family, along with Steven Mueller & Family.Fleet Six has experienced some recent success on and off the water. For example, Annual Harry Wood Memorial

Regatta was held out of Balboa Yacht Club on Sunday, March 23. It was a cool and breezy day in Newport Harbor, whichmade for great competition. Fleet Six ran away with the top two spots in the A-Fleet and first place in the B-Fleet. BruceGolison and Dina Corsi just edged out Kevin Thomas and Amanda Wayne in the four-race regatta, by a two-point margin.Adam and Nora Elshawhary took home first in the B-Fleet with 1-4-1-3 finishes. Congrats!

Let’s see, what else is going on? Oh, yes! Twilites! We are quite excited that Twilites have begun. The King of theBay, Honorable D. Martyn Bookwalter, will be out as our PRO for another season.
