conjunction with the

opening of Knowledge

Convention 2008 at the

I n t e r n a t i o n a l

Convention Centre in

Berakas.

During the launching,

His Majesty took the

opportunity to have a

look at the website and

also the interactive

educational tool called

the Smart Board

Interactive Whiteboard

which was part of the

exhibition at UNISSA

booth. With the

launching of the

website, the university

hopes to be on a par

with other national

and internat ional

h igher educat ion

institutions.

The website provides

easier access to

information related to

the administration,

faculties, current and

future programmes

and courses offered by

the university. It will

also act as a guide for

visitors on the daily

operations of the

university, application

p r o c e d u r e s a n d

day-to-day life of

s tudents in the

Ahlan wa sahlan to the new and improved edition of Al-

Mishkah, issue number 4.

First and foremost, we would like to take the opportunity to

congratulate and introduce the newly appointed Editorial

Committee Members of UNISSA’s newsletter Al-Mishkah, for

the academic session 2008/2009.

The freshly enhanced newsletter is a compilation of news and

articles that highlight the activities that UNISSA has been

actively involved in for the period of May to August 2008,

which are written in three languages – Arabic, English and

Malay. Also featured as the new look of Al-Mishkah is the three

new headings that indicate the nature of an article selected and

included in this newsletter.

The highlight feature of this issue is the launching of UNISSA’s

website by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah

Muizzaddin Waddaulah the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of

Brunei Darussalam, as well as UNISSA’s involvement in the

‘Knowledge Convention’ which was held nationwide in July

2008.

lectures held in conjunction

with His Majesty's 62nd

birthday celebrations.

Thousands gathered at the

event to attend a

special lecture by Associate

Professor Dr Sharifah

Hayaati binti Syed Ismail,

who spoke on the important

role that families play in

building a nation of zikir.

Associate Professor Dr

Hayaati raised the issue of

how a family can find real

happiness through the good

graces of Allah, especially

the relationships between

husband and wife and parent

and child. She described a

zikir family as one that

always remembers Allah

and His teachings and

affirmed that the true value

of the theme does not lie in

the mere act of zikir but how

it is integrated into our lives

and instilled in us from

birth. According to Hayaati,

a zikir family is only a

manifestation of our love for

Allah and our

family.

Later, Her Majesty, Her

Royal Highness Pengiran

Isteri and other members of

the royal family toured the

exhibition, which showcased

Islamic artifacts,

calligraphic works of art and

photos of artifacts belonging

to Prophet Muhammad

(PBUH) in

appreciation of the Islamic

civilization and its culture.

They also toured the Raja and

Zikir Gallery, which

displayed photos and

personal belongings related

to His Majesty's work as an

Islamic leader.

UNISSA OFFICERS VISIT I-CENTRE

On 27 May 2008, fifteen officers

from UNISSA made a visit to the

Innovation Centre or better known as

“iCentre” in Anggerek Desa. The

delegation, which was led by the

Deputy Rector of UNISSA, Dr Hj

Mohd Yusop bin Hj Awg Damit, was

there to learn about its facilities and

how to collaborate with it in

research and development.

Part of the visit was a briefing by Hui

Kwok Leong, the director of iCentre,

in which he stated that the centre

provides comprehensive and effective

incubation programmes and facilitates

ICT start-ups. It is also focused on

building incubates to pursue industry

business opportunities.

OFFICIAL CEREMONY FOR STUDENTS

REGISTRATION AND ORIENTATION

An official ceremony for the

registration and orientation of

UNISSA’s second intake of 129

students was held at Lecture Theatre,

Chancellor Hall, Universiti Brunei

Darussalam on 2 August 2008 in the

afternoon. Present as the guest of

honour was Pg Dato Seri Setia Dr

Haji Mohammad bin Pg Haji Abdul

Rahman, the Deputy Minister of

Education cum Rector of UNISSA.

In his speech, he said that Sultan

Sharif Ali Islamic University is a

university that is dynamic and

progressive. There is a need to bring

on changes, take initiative and be

proactive for the benefit of the race,

religion, king and nation.

He later urged the students to

improve their academic performance,

respect others and abide by the rules

and regulations of the university. He

also advised them to contribute

towards the society and participate in

academic, religious as well as

non-religious activities in addition to

boost the reputation of the university

through academic achievements.

He also took the opportunity to

announce the university’s plan to

publish two books in conjunction

with the country’s silver jubilee

independence day. He also urged the

students to make contribution to the

books as this may uplift the

university’s reputation not only in the

sultanate, but also at international

level.

The Rector also expressed his hope to

see the students to develop active,

far-sighted and dynamic way of

thinking.

PRE-SESSION COURSE CLOSING CEREMONY

A ceremony was held on 5 July 2008

to mark the closing of the UNISSA

pre-session course which was

conducted for students who would be

enrolling in UNISSA in August 2008.

The event took place at Lecture

Theatre at the Chancellor Hall,

Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

Present as the guest of honour was

Dr Hj Mohd Yusop bin Hj Awg

Damit, the Deputy Rector of

UNISSA. Among the highlights of

the ceremony were a speech by the

guest of honour, a speech by the

student representative, a tausyeh

performance and also a play by the

pre-session course students.

Following that, the guest of honour

presented certificates of participation

to all the students who passed the

course. Later, Dr Hjh Masnon bte Hj

Ibrahim, the Assistant Rector of

UNISSA, also presented prizes to the

best students in the pre-session

course as well as to the course

facilitators.

The course, which was conducted for

three months from April until June

2008, was organized by the Centre

for Promotion of Knowledge and

Languages, UNISSA, with the

objective to polish and strengthen the

students’ proficiency in English and

Arabic.

ORIENTATION PROGRAMMES FOR NEW STUDENTS

On 4 August 2008, the second batch of UNISSA students started their first academic session at the university. The new intake totaled up to 144 postgraduate and undergraduate students. Prior to their enrolment, a few activities and programmes had been organized such as Leadership course, Silaturrahim

morning run and motivation talk for their orientation. The orientation programmes were preceded by a briefing session which was held on Tuesday, 22

July 2008 at Mitsubishi Hall, Central Lecture Theatre, Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

In the session, Pg Haji Saiful Bahrin bin Pg Haji Kula, Dean of Student Affairs, UNISSA briefed the students on the details of their enrolment day so that they could make early preparations.

He also informed them about the programmes and activities that they had to attend throughout the orientation which would be held for three days from 31 July to 2

August 2008.

REGISTRATION DAY & MOTIVATIONAL TALKS

After two days of outdoor activities, it was time for the registration of the new students and to begin their new academic life at the university. The registration took place on 2 August 2008 in the mornig at Lecture Theatre, Chancellor Hall, Universiti Brunei Darussalam. After the registration, all the students attended a motivational talk which was given by a special guest motivator from Malaysia, Dr Danial bin Zainal Abidin.

Later, it was followed by another motivational talk given by a representative from Brunei’s Narcotics Control Bureau.

SESI TAKLIMAT PERKHIDMATAN PERPUSTAKAAN

Pada 6hb. Mei 2008, satu sesi taklimat

perkhidmatan perpustakaan telah

diadakan bagi pelajar-pelajar Kursus

Pra-Sesi Bahasa Arab dan Bahasa

Inggeris sesi 2008 bertempat di

Dewan Serbaguna Universiti Brunei

Darussalam.

Taklimat yang disampaikan oleh

beberapa orang pegawai perpustakaan

Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD)

dihasratkan sebagai pendedahan awal

kepada bakal mahasiswa mahasiswi

tentang perkhidmatan perpustakaan

sebelum masuk ke dalam dunia

akademik dan penyelidikan.

Sesi taklimat kemudiannya diikuti

dengan sesi lawatan sebagai langkah

membiasakan pelajar dengan ruang

On 9 June 2008, the first batch of

UNISSA students attended a course

on developing leadership at Bukit

Shahbandar Recreational Park in

Jerudong. The outdoor excursion was

jointly organized by UNISSA

Students Affairs Section and

Outward Bound Brunei Darussalam

(OBBD).

The course was divided into mornig

and afternoon sessions where the

students had the opportunity to learn

the theory and practical skills of first

aid including cardiopulmonary

resuscitation (CPR) as well as

participate in team building

activities and communication games.

Pg Hj Saiful Bahrin bin Pg Hj Kula,

the Dean of Students’ Affairs, said

that such activities were not only

aimed to equip those students with

additional knowledge and new

experience, but also to boost their

self-esteem and confidence as well as

increase their integrity and

leadership.

UNISSA STUDENTS VISIT YSHHB

On 17 July 2008, fifty-five undergraduate students of UNISSA went on a study

visit to Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) in Bandar Seri

Begawan.

The visit was one of the activities organized by the university’s Student Affairs

Section and led by the Dean, Pg Haji Saiful Bahrin bin Pg Haji Kula.

During the visit, the public relations officer of YSHHB, Dk Hazami binti Pg

Haji Ahmad, gave the students a briefing on the history of YSHHB and the

purposes of its establishment, among which is to provide community services

and help people locally as well as internationally. In addition to that, they were

also briefed on job opportunities that are available at the institution.

A DAY AT THE OGDC

The Student Affairs Committee of UNISSA once again organized a study visit

for its students on 19 July 2008. This time, a group of fifty-two undergraduate

students went to visit the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre Brunei (OGDC) in

Seria.

The group was led by Pg Hj Saiful Bahrin bin Pg Hj Kula, UNISSA Dean of

Students Affairs, and also accompanied by a few UNISSA officers and lecturers.

The objective of the visit was to equip the students with knowledge and

understanding of the oil and gas industry in the country.

The exhibition supervisor of OGDC, Albert Chang Yew En, greeted the students

upon their arrival and later gave them a briefing on the history of the OGDC.

Following that, they were taken to see the exhibition which was divided into

several sections namely the Formation, Exploration, Transportation, Energy and

many others.

Majlis Ilmu kali kelima ini membawa

tema “Menghayati Negara Zikir” .

Pada tahun ini, Universiti Islam Sultan

Sharif Ali (UNISSA) diberi kepercayaan

selaku Ahli Jawatankuasa bahagian sesi

ceramah termasuk Ceramah Khas,

Majlis Ilmu 2008. Selain itu, UNISSA

juga ikut serta dalam Pameran Majlis

Ilmu yang bertempat di Pusat

Persidangan Antarabangsa, Berakas . Di

d a l a m p a m e r a n t e r s e b u t ,

berkesempatan untuk melihat dengan

lebih dekat lagi galeri UNISSA yang

mempamirkan alat bantu mengajar

alat bantu tersebut bertujuan untuk

memberi pengajaran secara berkesan

dan sekaligus memberi pendedahan

kepada kemahiran IT dalam sistem

pendidikan secara menyeluruh.

On 31 July 2008, the first day of orientation for

the new students began with leadership course

which took place at Bukit Shahbandar

Recreational Park in Jerudong. It was jointly

organized by UNISSA Students Affairs

Committee and Outward Bound Brunei

Darussalam (OBBD).

According to Pg Haji Saiful Bahrin bin Pg Haji

Kula, UNISSA Dean of Students Affairs, the

objective of the course was to teach the

students to be more confident and boost their

self-esteem as well as to increase their integrity

and leadership.

Apart from that, the course also equipped them

with new experience and knowledge that they

would not get in classroom.

During the course, the new students

participated in various activities including

team-building and communication games.

Besides, they were also taught the theory and

practical skills of first aid.

BRIEFING SESSION ON ARMY & POLICE CADET PROGRAMME

On 9 August 2008, a briefing session on

army and police cadet programme was

conducted for undergraduate UNISSA

students. It was held at the Male Hostel

Hall, Universiti Brunei Darussalam. The

objective was to give the students

information about the uniformed cadet

programme which is included in their

co-curriculum activities.

Dr Hj Mohd Yusop bin Hj Awg Damit,

Deputy Rector, UNISSA, was the guest of

honour. In his remarks, he stated that the

objective of UNISSA is not only to produce

graduates who are excellent intellectually,

physically, emotionally and spiritually, but

also to produce syumul or well-rounded

graduates. Thus, UNISSA introduces the

co-curriculum course to the undergraduates

in order to realize the university’s

objectives.

He also advised the students to be serious in

any activity that they participate in. Apart

from that, he also stressed the importance of

wearing appropriate attire which cover their

aurat during the activities and advised them

to uphold their name, religion and

university.

He also expressed his gratitude to the

Royal Brunei Army Force (RBAF) and

Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) for

giving the opportunities to the students to

join the cadet programme which would be

the platform for them to empower

themselves and learn to be more

disciplined.

The session proceeded with a briefing on

police cadet programme which was given

by Inspector Zainal Abidin bin Hj Ibrahim

from the RBPF and later followed by a

briefing on army cadet programme by

Major Idris bin OKMB Hj Othman from

the RBAF. The students were also given

opportunity to ask questions regarding the

programmes.

At the end of the session, the guest of

honour was taken to see an exhibition of

some equipment and gadgets including

arms used by the RBAF and RBPF.

US SPECIAL ENVOY TO THE OIC VISITS UNISSA

On 18 August 2008, UNISSA

received a visit from Mr Sada

Cumber, the US Special Envoy to the

O r g a n i z a t i o n o f I s l a m i c

C o n f e r e n c e ( O I C ) . H e w a s

accompanied by Mr John W

McIntyre, the Deputy Chief of

Mission at US Embassy in Brunei

Darussalam.

They were welcomed by Dr Hj Mohd

Yusop bin Hj Awg Damit, the Deputy

Rector of UNISSA, Dr Hjh Masnon

b i n t i H j I b r a h i m , t h e

Assistant Rector of UNISSA, and other

UNISSA officers.

During the visit, he learnt about the

courses available at the Islamic

university and later encouraged

UNISSA to open its doors to

students from OIC countries. He also

said that he would recommend the OIC

Secretariat in Jeddah to offer

scholarships for students to enroll in

UNISSA.

Focus is also being given to the activities that the lecturers, students and non-academic

members took part during the long semester break, such as visits to Yayasan Sultan Haji

Hassanal Bolkiah and OGDC, attending motivational talks and leadership courses; and

involving in spiritual and religious activities such as Isra’ Mi’raj celebration and cleaning

campaign.

Another highlight is also on UNISSA receiving exclusive visit from the US Special Envoy to

the OIC and representatives from Universiti Malaya, which helps to strengthen the ties

between these two universities.

You will also notice a new page that has been introduced to welcome the newly appointed

academic and non-academic staff that have joined the UNISSA community as well as warm

farewell wishes to those who have left UNISSA, leaving behind a thousand memories, life-

worthy knowledge and a lifetime of friendship.
