We will adventure into the world of dinosaurs during the Jurassic period! We will use our discoveries and create paintings, sculptures, and 3D Art.

Students will have the opportunity to design and name their own dinosaur, as well as creating their own dinosaur fossil. We will learn how to dig for dinosaur bones and map the area of a dig as well. We will explore how paleontologists work on dig sights around the world. Next we will make dinosaur egg nests and design texture collages re-creating dinosaurskin and defense plates. By collaborating with classmates we will create a 3D dinosaur scene using mixed media materials and writing a story about the 3D scene.

We will learn about size scales of the dinosaurs and compare them to animals that live today. We will construct our own sketchbooks for students to design their ideas.

Have you ever wished you could go back in time? Perhaps you've been told there is no such thing as a time machine, but there is! Historians and archaeologists time travel every day by studying the stories and artifacts left behind by peoplefrom different times and places. In this class, we will use geography, teamwork and a little imagination to design and construct a classroom Time Machine. Then we will use stories and artifacts to discover what it was like to be a child growing up in three very different times and places. First, our classroom time machine will whisk us to the year 150 B.C.E to the lost city of Muziris in southern India, an important center for trade in the ancient world.

Second, we will sail through the fjords of Norway with Vikings in the year 922 C.E. and find out why their boats are shapedlike dragons. Finally, we will travel to the U.S. state of New Mexico to visit Taos Pueblo in the year 1680 C.E. where rebellion against the Spanish conquistadors is brewing! In each place and time we visit, we will focus on exploring the daily lives of the children who lived there. What was important for children to learn, and why? Were there differencesbetween the lives of boys and girls? What kinds of homes did children live in? What did they wear and eat? What did they do for fun? Join us for Time Machine: A New Adventure!

Evolutionary Developmental BiologyGrades 9 through 11Jul 17, 2016-Jul 22, 2016

How do embryos develop from single cells into the wide variety of organisms we see either living or in fossilized form? What are the evolutionary consequences of changes in embryonic development? Questions like these are the foundation of the field of evolutionary developmental biology, also known as “evo devo.” The answers lie in where and when certain genes are turned on or off during development. These differences in genetic instructions determine how a human cell knows to take on the characteristics of a human and not a chimp or a mouse or a fly.

In this class, we’ll examine the evolutionary relationships of organisms and how changes to their gene expression can lead to changes in their development. We’ll look at how different kinds of embryos develop, when developing embryos start to look like the organism they will become, and we’ll have the opportunity to examine embryos of organisms like fish and frogs that are often used as model organisms in scientific research. We will also explore how changes in bodystructures can lead to evolutionary advantages for some organisms while becoming disadvantages for others.

Finally, we’ll visit research labs where scientists are currently working on some of these questions, learn about someof the exciting research occurring in the field of evolutionary developmental biology, and see how scientific researchersapproach these evo devo questions in their daily research.

Generally, when people think about developmental psychology, some basic questions come to mind: when do infantslearn to reach, crawl, and walk? when do children learn their first words? when do children learn to read? These questions, although interesting, all focus on what happens at different ages. But as you will learn in this course, developmental science is not just about children—it’s about how human behavior changes over time. Thus, the main questions developmental scientists ask revolve around the word “how”: how do infants learn to reach? how do children learn theirfirst words? how do children learn to read?

The goal of this course is to give you an appreciation for developmental psychology as a science of change. We will focus on development from birth through adolescence (although development is across the lifespan!). We will cover the main theories that try to explain how a child develops motor, language, and other cognitive skills. We will read a few short supplementary readings, observe videos of developmental milestones, discuss and assess experiments in developmental science.

In-class exercises will give you an appreciation for how science is conducted by stepping back from the “facts” to explore current research methods. Lastly, we will focus on how the research impacts the real world (such as education, parenting recommendations) and how research is communicated to the public.
