    1. Introduction

GPS (Global PositioningSystem) is a system ofsatellite navigation whichallows determination of

every globe position withhelp from signals receivedfrom satellites. Themeasurement accuracy

    with such a system variesbetween 30 meters(military) and 150 meters(commercial).

    2. Operating principles

The satellitescontinuously broadcastsignals that containinformation about their

position, the status andthe exact time. Knowingthese information,we candetermine the distance

and we can calculate theposition of the objectusing the trilaterationmethod.

    3. Disturbance

Interference with radio broadcasts on UHF

Plants VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range) and

    DME (Distance Measuring Equipment)

May lose satellite position on curves

    Elements of structure

    Electromagnetic and atmospheric disturbance

    4. Augmentation

    systems

    Basic GPS gearevolved through the

    next systems:

    -ABAS (Aircraft Based

    Augmentation System)-SBAS (Satellite Based

    Augmentation System)

    -GBAS (Ground Based

    AugmentationSystem).

    5. Differential Global

Positioning System (DGPS) For improving the

    accuracy in

    determining the

    position an improved

    GPS system namedDGPS has been

    developed. The

    information received

    from two or more

    receptors are

    compared every

    moment with precise

    data from a station.

    6. European Geostationary Navigation

    Overlay Service (EGNOS)

EGNOS is the first project in

the GNSS field of Europebeing the precursor of

    GALILEO.

Being composed from 3geostationary satellitesand a network of 3 fixedstations positioned onground, EGNOS fulfillshis purpose bybroadcastinginformation that

contain the sent GPSsignals accuracy andconfidence.

    Advantages offered by EGNOS

    Safety improvement during flight operations.

Minimizing the operational cost by eliminating theneed for auxiliary navigational gear in airports.

It allows the aircraft to land in hard weatherconditions

It reduces the fuel consumption and the CO2emissions

It increases the quality of horizontal and verticalguiding of the aircraft

    Free service provided

    7. Advantages of satellite navigation

    in aviation

Continuous and accurate positioning in every

    flight stage

    Free service provided

Increases the safety level during specific flight

    operations

    Reduces the fuel consumption

    Better route planning

    Continuous monitoring of aircrafts
