JOURNEY OF THE MAGI
A cold coming we had of it,
Just the worst time of the year
For a journey, and such a long
journey:
The ways deep and the weather
sharp,
The very dead of winter.'
And the camels galled, sorefooted,
refractory,
Lying down in the melting snow.
There were times we regretted
The summer palaces on slopes, the
terraces,
And the silken girls bringing sherbet.
Then the camel men cursing and
grumbling
and running away, and wanting their
liquor and women,
And the night-fires going out, and the
lack of shelters,
And the cities hostile and the towns
unfriendly
And the villages dirty and charging
high prices:
A hard time we had of it.
At the end we preferred to travel all
night,
Sleeping in snatches,
With the voices singing in our ears,
saying
That this was all folly.
Then at dawn we came down to a
temperate valley,
Wet, below the snow line, smelling of
vegetation;
With a running stream and a water-
mill beating the darkness,
And three trees on the low sky,
And an old white horse galloped away
in the meadow.
Then we came to a tavern with vine-
leaves over the lintel,
Six hands at an open door dicing for
pieces of silver,
And feet kicking the empty wine-
skins.
But there was no information, and so
we continued
And arriving at evening, not a
moment too soon
Finding the place; it was (you might
say) satisfactory.
All this was a long time ago, I
remember,
And I would do it again, but set down
This set down
This: were we led all that way for
Birth or Death? There was a Birth,
certainly
We had evidence and no doubt. I had
seen birth and death,
But had thought they were different;
this Birth was
Hard and bitter agony for us, like
Death, our death.
We returned to our places, these
Kingdoms,
But no longer at ease here, in the old
dispensation,
With an alien people clutching
their gods.
I should be glad of another
death.
T.S. Elliot’s brilliant poem of a life
journey from wild passions of youth
into truth and spirit; of passing
things; of the “satisfaction” Christ
paid to the Father for us from his
Cross; of how the ‘old white horse’ of
eternal death and separation is
chased away; and of how the Magi’s
eyes might have opened when Christ
became their lens into God and all
reality round them.
In Christ,

Epiphany/Manifestation/Revealing
Today we celebrate the Feast of The Epiphany. It’s nickname being “Little Christmas,” the day the three Wise Men from the East fol-lowed the star which led them to the stable in Bethlehem where Jesus Our Savior was born.
Today we will hear the ever popular Christ-mas Carol “We Three Kings.” In a musical sense the first part of this melody, through chords, and harmony recreate the caravan crossing the de-sert in search of the Christ Child. The second part of this famous carol musically praises the light of the star. It is safe to say that by God’s light manifesting itself through the star, the kings were led to Jesus.
In the same token, we can equate the light of the star to our ability as human beings to love each other. Through the love we give others, we manifest our Christian spirit, which leads others to Christ. The sum of this equation simply says Christ manifests himself through us by giving love and receiving love in return. AROUND THE DIOCESE January 14 (for 15 weeks) – CONTACT (24 hour

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION INFORMATION 732-295-3630 x 35
“God is so great that he can become small. God is so powerful that he can make himself vulnerable and come to us as a defenseless child, so that we can love him.” – Pope Bene-dict XVI
Faith at Home: Let’s take an example from the Wise Men who came searching for Jesus. Look for Him in the events and people you meet this week. Keep a journal of where you met Jesus this week and share when you gather for a meal next weekend.
“Dive into God’s Word” VBS: Get ready to cele-brate the Word of God with an ocean theme this summer at St. Martha’s! The eight-day VBS will be held on June 27, 28, 29, 30, July 5, 6, 7, 8. More information coming soon. Make plans to join us!
Check out our parish website (saintmartha.net) for religious education information and upcom-ing events.
Traveling Mary: Our most holy Mother Mary has made the rounds of the homes of our third graders again this year. For a few weeks, we will be sharing some of the reflections and prayers that our children have written about Mary’s visit.
Alyssa F wrote: “Mary, you are a kind wom-an. Thank you for visiting with our family. I learned how to pray the rosary beads.”

Meetings: Sunday 5-7 pm downstairs
Happy New Year and may 2016 bring many blessings to all of you!
Thanks to all that came out to the Chelsea Assisted Living Facility in Brick on the Sunday be-fore Christmas for caroling. Several of our youth joined our traditional choir and our harvest folk choir to sing to the residents. Even Father Dave joined us with his harmonica! After about a half hour of singing, we all joined the residents in en-joying hot chocolate, cookies, and conversa-tion. It was great to experience many genera-tions connecting with one another!
A reminder to our 8th graders that your re-ports on the saint you have chosen for your Confirmation name is due this week.
Our youth will be joining our Respect Life ministry on the bus trip to Washington, DC on Friday, January 22 for the annual March for Life. Seats are limited, so please let me know as soon as possible if you would like to go. Thanks to our Respect Life ministry, the bus fee will be waived for our youth.
The first high school Youth Ministry meeting of the new year will be next Sunday, January 10. All are welcome, whether you’ve never at-tended or haven’t attended in a while. Getting involved would be a great new year’s resolu-tion.
Please keep in mind I am here to serve all our youth in many ways. Even if you can’t at-tend our meetings or activities, I am available by appointment if you have questions about your faith or need advice or someone to talk to about any concerns. Please call or email me at any time.
